- The Smith and Wesson Model 29 in .44 magnum, often referred to as the "most powerful handgun in the world", dominated '70s and '80s Hollywood, most often in its 8 3/8 inch barrel configuration. Made explosively popular by Clint Eastwood's "Dirty Harry" films, the Model 29 was the weapon of choice for lawmen and vigilantes, and their blued-steel frame, tough construction and brute strength were often a reflection of the characters who carried them. The Model 29's Hollywood throne was usurped in the late '80s and early '90s by the Magnum Research .50 Desert Eagle.
