NIKON D7500 Review - The most forgotten camera?

  • Is the D7500 the most forgotten camera of Nikon today?
    Or is this camera a hidden treasure?
    At first glance, the D7500 is just an update of the D7200. But the D7200 actually already had a successor, the D500.
    Is the D7500 now positioned lower than the D7200, or is it a step forward? And when is the D500 preferable?
    I explain this extensively in this Nikon D7500 review.

    Last week i was invited to a country wedding. The young couple could not afford a photographer. All i had in my truck was the 7500 paired with ff105mm macro. I asked if i could take pictures at no charge to them and they agreed. The images where stunning so much so that i recieved several inquiries for paid work. Always remember that a profesional photographer is not defined solely by their equipment skill, artistic ability, experience, and willingness to take the best shot possible in less than ideal conditions is by far more important in my opinion.

      Exactly, Photography is based on Light not the gear, If you watch some of these pro challenges the big youtubers put on the first thing the pro wants to follow is the light.. chase the light..

      @@DAVE_WHITE Absolutely true! I have a photo that I'm particularly fond of, which I took years ago with a Galaxy S2. Despite being a relatively basic camera by today's standards, the picture turned out remarkably well because I set it up with proper lighting using a flashlight. It looked almost like a shot taken with a DSLR, albeit with lower resolution. This experience taught me that it's not just the camera that determines the quality of a photo, but the person behind it.
      Having the right equipment is beneficial, but skill, artistic ability, experience, and the willingness to experiment and take chances are far more important. I still use my Nikon D5100 and currently shoot with a D3300, but I'm considering upgrading to the D7500. Everything I've seen about it suggests it's a fantastic camera, and I prefer to stick with DSLRs. They offer the reliability and control that are essential for capturing great shots, regardless of the circumstances.

    Thanks for this comprehensive review of the D7500. I recently purchased a D7500 for my niece. She is a budding photographer and has been using her D3500 for a while (and getting some great images). I wanted her to have a camera with controls that would be easier for her to get out of the automatic modes. I shot the D7200 for about 3 yrs and loved it. And the D500 for a couple of years. I felt the D7500 would be the ideal upgrade for her.

    I love my D7500 I bought it when I realised, after just 6 months or so, that I was rapidly outgrowing my D3500 Both are excellent machines though the D7500 makes the 3500 feel like a toy. I'd recommend the 7500 to anyone interested in getting started in digital photography who maybe has a little skill already say from previously using a more entry level camera, phone, or having maybe previously shot 35mm film It's cheaper than mirrorless and capable of producing just as good results

    Thanks for this well-considered video/review. I bought the D3400 Kit years ago and actually started losing my eyesight and had to put it away, in the last three years I have had surgery and can see better now, more than ever. So, I have put the D3400 through its paces. I have wanted to upgrade to either the D5600, D7500, or D500. After seeing this, I am more convinced that the D7500 is a good choice. When you consider you can get a new one with a nice lens for $1000.

    • @WimBals
      @WimBals  Рік тому +2

      First of all, let me say I'm glad you've got your sight back.
      I think the D7500 is the perfect middle ground between the D3400 and the D500.
      Overall, you will be able to achieve 95% of your goals over the D500. Unless you only shoot sports and action.
      The D500 cameras that come on the market second-hand also often come from (semi) professional use. As a result, these cameras are often not too aesthetically pleasing.
      In that respect, I would therefore rather opt for a new D7500, while it is still possible.

    I did the D-3100 / D-5600 and now within the past week, the D7500. Its an amazing camera, and I can see already how superior the camera is to the mid range D-5600 series. The view screen and the shutter reacts so much more professionally. With my 10-20mm Nikkor lens it feels as if there is a good deal more real estate to work with. I might have to swap between bodies to make a comparison. Great review.

    Thank you so much for a very useful view of this camera. I have just ordered a new one in Australia and you have had a very positive influence on having made the right choice for me. I was initially after more frames per second than my wonderful D5600 could supply. I looked at mirrorless and couldn't justify new lenses as and all up cost of changing over. Now I keep my much loved lenses and get advanced video and more benefits. I'm truly happy and inspired. My true love is macro but sports and wildlife are now more easily approached with the faster frame rate. Thank you so much. Steve.

    Very well done video! I pair mine with the Tamron 18-400mm lens for a truly one lens travel camera. I do like the built-in flash, especially for fill. The D500 does not have this feature. The 7500 also shoots 4k video and has mic and headphone inputs, and hdmi and usb out. I don't miss the 2nd card slot, but simply get a high quality, large, and fast card, even for 4k video. 20 megapixels is plenty of resolution, and actually does better in low light than denser chips. It's a bit heavier than some modern dslr's but also built like a tank. If the camera has a weak point, it's focusing on moving objects.

    Over the years I've had several Nikon cameras, from the days of film. I bought a 2nd hand 7500 a few years ago, and it does everything I want. From my 35mm up to the 200-500, the results are excellent. I'm not a professional, just an amateur with years of experience. As much as the new mirrorless or full frame Nikons appeal, I'm happy with my 7500.

    As a photographer using the Nikon D5100 and D3300, I have been considering upgrading to either the D7200 or the D7500, given their comparable prices in my region. After much deliberation, I am leaning towards the D7500, primarily because I find mirrorless cameras less appealing.
    Mirrorless cameras often suffer from lag and slower response times, which can be frustrating. Additionally, the AI-driven features in many modern mirrorless cameras can sometimes feel like they take control away from the photographer, causing further delays due to rendering times. In contrast, DSLRs like the D7500 offer more immediate feedback and greater reliability in various shooting conditions. Even smartphones, despite their advanced software, cannot match the quality of a DSLR's objective lens, which is crucial for capturing high-quality images.
    In summary, while mirrorless cameras are advancing, they still have a way to go in terms of performance and user control. The Nikon D7500 stands out as a robust and reliable choice for photographers who value quick response times and traditional DSLR advantages. This review by Wim Bals provides a thorough exploration of the D7500's features, helping photographers make an informed decision about their next camera purchase.

    Great review of this amazing camera. I have just bought this camera for my kit and am interested in its low light and high speed performance. Eight frames a second to 100 shots in Jpeg to the buffer (50RAW) is amazing. I am hoping to couple this camera with a DX 70-300mm AFP VR zoom for some great wildlife shots. If you are careful you can buy this camera at about 1/3 off its original price. This makes this camera a total bargain!!

I've captured images of dogs and horses running and playing, not always in the best lighting. This camera can produce gorgeous photos with plenty of detail. Once you learn what metering and focus settings work for you, you'll find the autofocus fast and accurate. I've shot images in the fog and rain, and the camera has been bounced around a bit. It is a solid piece of equipment that has served me well.

    Hello, I had a D7500 from 2017 to 2023. It was the best camera I ever had. I am very sad, that I sold it. The sensor is the same like in the Z50, ZFc, Z30 and the imagequality is the same too. That means, that the technique is still aktual, but the Nikon F-Lenses are better then the Z-DX-Lenses. I had 10 F-Lenses, but i used in 95% the Nikkor A-FS DX 16-80 F2.8-4. The D7500 with this Lens is an "universal gun" for fotographers. Please make not the same mistake i did. Never sell this faboulus camera. At this moment I have a ZF, but I had a Z6II and a ZFc. But i am not as happy with all these cameras as i was witch the D7500. Greetings. CH

      The prices are dropping fast of the used d7500’s. Maybe you can pick up one at some point.
      I have also the z50 and I find the 24mm F/1.7 dx and the 50-250mm dx really great lenses.
      Although you can mount the f-lenses on the z-mount by the ftz-adapter, the body-lens balance isn’t the same as mounted on a dedicated f-mount camera.

    I think that compared to the d500 there are some software bugs that Nikon does not acknowledge.
    For example, when the rear focus button is set to focus priority, the shutter button can be used to take a shot even if the subject is out of focus. Back focus priority only works well by default when the shutter button is pressed halfway.

    The problem with the D7500 is that it's purposefully mid-tier camera, and consumers and media have lost the ability to talk/discuss mid-tier anything. It's always about the flagships. So the D500 is still revered enough though it's sales dropped off after the first 3 years.; everyone who wanted one bought it up front or moved on to the D850, which has the same focus/exposure and same pixel density but higher resolution. Whereas the D7500 is still going, because it's a more reasonable package for your advanced amateur, smaller lighter and about 90% of the real world performance.

Tonight when leaving work I mentioned that I was going to go down the youtube rabbit hole of camera reviews over the weekend. She said I should just buy hers (I had no idea she had one to sell). Low and behold it's a Nikon D7500 and she had it in her office. I took a look at it, it's in great shape and she's only taken 600 photos with it. @Alsayid 12 днів тому

      @@WimBals So, the Z glass really is better/sharper than the DX lenses? One reason I am looking at a Z camera is to be able to use my three DX lenses, one of which is a fairly sharp 35mm prime. But, the DX lenses are noticeably better than this? This leaves me pondering. The cost of replacing that glass is still a consideration, though.

    • @WimBals
      @WimBals  11 днів тому

      I also used my 'old' f-mount glass with an FTZ adapter.
      The problem is that with this extra adapter extra length is added to the lens and is therefore no longer in balance with the light z-bodies.
      The newly developed lenses are significantly improved in terms of chromatic and longitudinal aberration, distortion, colors and sharpness.
      I am currently working on making a video about the 24mm f/1.7 DX z-lens. A fantastic light and cheap lens that easily beat the 35mm f/1.8 FX on a full frame (D610).
      I also have a review on my channel of the 50-250mm lens.
      In addition to Nikon glass there are also other manufacturers that release new lenses for Z cameras such as viltrox and Sigma.

    Can someone like me who is looking for first camera to buy in 2023, Can I choose DSLR/mirrorless?

    • @WimBals
      @WimBals  Рік тому

      If you only do photography then dslr is a cheaper choice.
      If you were also considering video, then mirrorless is the best choice.

    Secondo te il sistema af d7500 è realmente piu veloce della D810 ?

    • @WimBals
      @WimBals  Рік тому +1

      I personally find the D7500 faster in terms of AF than the D810. The D810 is more of a studio, portrait and landscape camera. While the D7500 reacts a little quicker when shooting action.

      @@WimBals Ho avuto la 810 ma dopo un anno l'ho dovuta vendere perchè inadatta a foto di azione ho preso una d4 usata e la situzione è miglorata incredibilmente, anche se ha la metà dei pixel i file D4 sono leggeri estremamente nitidi anche dovuto alla precisione af, sto usando anche la D750 che è un po' inferiore alla D4 anche i colori sono diversi , preferisco sempre la D4. Mi serve una aps-c per aumentare la focale e credo che la 7500 sia meglio della d7200 in af WB iso etc pero' manca il secondo slot e battery grip ....

      I myself have never had a problem without a second card slot.
      But if you still want that, and a battery grip, then I would look out for a D500. The AF is comparable to the D5.

    The D7500 isn't forgotten because of mirrorless. It's forgotten because it brought nothing special. It was just a scaled down D500 in a body that was introduced in the D7000. If the D7000 had a better AF system, the D7100 & D7200 would have been just as forgotten. It just shows that the changes have all been hyped by manufacturers to sell sell sell. And they'll do it all over again in mirrorless format, releasing the next best thing, making empty promises

    • @WimBals
      @WimBals  11 місяців тому +2

      The D7500 is actually a mixture of elements from the D500, D7200 and D5600.
      Nikon should have named this device a 'D6500'. After all, the step up from the D7200 is the D500.
      That does not mean that the D7500 isn’t a very good camera with which amazing results can be achieved.
      For example, the faster fps and the tiltable screen are an improvement over the D7200, which are important to me.
      Of course Nikon is a company that needs to make a profit, as a customer it is important not to fall for the trap of 'everything new is better'.
      That is why I sometimes use a D610 with which surprisingly good results can still be achieved.

      It has no such motor... No metering for the older lenses. The d7100 and 7200 had it but nikon decided against it in the d7500. Bad call...
