+SupaLexy (SupaNautica & MotoLexy) After the video I came right to the comments thinking the same thing. Especially the end when they were talking about transformers. Just a snobby "I played with dirt", and 'I didn't have a tv". I bet he has very little friends and the ones that can be around him are probably the same way. Maybe a hint of narcissism.
The posted comments are the only thing worthwhile about this whole project. Thankfully I zoomed through the video to see the finished product and was left scratching my head. Then laughed by butt off at the insightful comments of others who have more sense than the hotshots slobbering over this guy's work. My one unanswered question: If this was so much better than the "other one" these people kept mentioning, I wonder how bad IT was....
that's what I did, fast forwarded then proceeded to read the entertaining comments. lmbo! I see, we are all in agreement...WTH?! ...I'm still reading...rotf!
I agree with basically most of the commenters here...this guy is extremely arrogant. Over educated and entitled...I'm guessing this project ran a cost of around $1mil, while loads of other (unsponsored), better designers are affordably creating functional micro living spaces with shipping containers. It's not even aesthetically interesting! This was some serious masturbation...and to say that he doesn't know who the "Transformers" are because as a child he "played with dirt." Ugh. Not only self important, but pretentious, too.
When Kalkin finds out about Winnebagos, he's gonna cry. They can stay outside and come roofed, you don't need a crew of 25 and semi to move them, and they have lots of buttons. OOoooo, woo. Lots more time for playing with dirt.
Agree with those who stated, a complete waste of resources, by the way I missed seeing the 6 bedrooms, more looked like a bedroom, kitchen, dining, bathroom. All Plastic ??? Wow this was so innovative.
what a stupid idea. how much did it cost to build this with all the hydraulics etc. then you end up with a house with no roof. how is this remotely sustainable? how does this help house people when this probably cost double what a standard house would cost.
I love watching you guys, thinking, putting together your ideas, thoughts, and understanding, compromising. A unite, working with such passion, to create amazing spaces for the world. I know this is just the beginning of what could be. You can make paradise in the desert, with lots of palm trees. Everyone will have a beautiful house, with a garden in the back, to grow food. lol Sorry, my imagination is running wild with me today, again. Peace and love with compassion, and unity, for such an amazing world. I love you guys already. :-)
the first thing i noticed was that the people were drinking in little tea cups and i thought to myself "IN THE SOUTH, WE DON'T WANT NO TINY TEA CUPS!!!! WE WANT A GALLON OF LEMONADE OR SOME SWEET TEA ON A HOT SUMMER'S DAY!!!" now if you'll excuse me, i'll be chugging down an ice cold beverage
so you're saying that drinking tea causes obesity? last time i checked, junk food was the problem. WOW! the more you know. I'll be sure to think about how much of an idiot you are next time im chugging my ice cold beverage.
thank you. i always wanted to be made fun of on the internet. maybe this is what people call cyber bullying. GASP! oh no im so scared because you cant say that to my face and that you're just some guy mad about his own life that all you do is bring other people down to make his life seem better. well its been nice chatting with you, Rolaids. im going to be the good girl and walk away with a smile on my face :)
ilubmiself Ummm... you called him an idiot first.. and he's right about the sugar.. apparently about your weight as well since you came off with some "cyber bullying" crap
Chic industrial vision... 'playing with dirt' seems to have worked for you. Great work Adam Kalkin! Perfect for a giant house, the ultimate conversation for piece and functional living room with more seat cushioning.
This is on the same level as concept cars and way-out fashion design. It's merely a concept and not intended for practical everyday use. This kind of thinking outside of the box is what leads designers to adapt unusual concepts to the more practical side.
If you're super curious what the thing looks like, jump to the last 2 minutes. Then scratch your head and wonder... wth?? If you're trying to make sense, don't worry, so are the rest of us with more brains than money. I LOVE the idea of shipping container housing... this is not it.
I also do not understand the negativity surrounding the comments. This has great potential. IT's the first, but it WILL get better. imagine THIS as multi level. IMagine this as a solution for space expansion, then compression. Folks, It may seem bleak at the moment, but one way or another, in 50 to 100 years time, THIS could be the prototype of future homes. I cant see yet the evolution, but I know this is where its going to start.
Wow! Not only did he pack five rooms into a house the size of a sipping container but he also managed to fit in THREE cappuccino machines! The height of practicality. This would be perfect for anyone that had to liquidate their business assets and who defaulted on their home mortgage. Just have this thing shipped into that empty warehouse, press the button and problem solved!
+Pat Studer Yeah, I think this is supposed to be art or something. At least I doubt they mean for it to be functional. I mean, you couldn't stock it with anything since it would all fall onto the floor each time you folded it up or down. Just something rich people can have to show off with.
Here's the thing. Transformers are really very unpleasant places to live or work. Every time you want to change activities you have to reconfigure your space. It's so much more pleasant to just walk into the next room that is already set up for that task. Who wants to have to reconfigure their desk into a kitchen if they are working at their computer and decide they want a cup of coffee? Architecture should be about flow from one space to another, not about making the spaces be "active" in unnatural ways. And then there's the problem of living in shipping containers. Shipping containers are ugly. People should not have to put up with living in ugly spaces, nor should they be pigeon-holed into boxes like consumer goods. We're living beings and architecture should be about finding appropriately pleasant spaces for people to live and breathe and be inspired to greatness. Modern architects are often infatuated with designs that can be set up "anywhere". That's not good architecture. Good architecture is about relating a building to its environment: its landscape and its neighbor buildings and open spaces and its climate and its sun exposure. Designing without reference to anything outside your own little box isn't true architecture at all. It's at best merely interior design.
In my eyes it's not a waste of time or money. Everyone gets paid - job creation and security. Why does it have to be practical? It's design - design improves and is all around you. It's what's possible. Creative minds help make this world interesting and exciting along with people who can put the idea into fruition. Good all around to me!
So playing us... Does not know who "Transformers" are. Please, yea right!!!!. You probably had every color, every style in your toy box. Optimus Prime was the one who inspired this guys creativity. And Bumble Bee helped him fly from one idea to the next. The design was cute. I did not grasp for air. Just cute. Now let me go back to playing with my toys that I buried in the dirt.
time keeps racing and this world keeps falling apart. Maybe this is a way to help bring it together. MIGHT HAVE SOME VERY PRACTICLE USES IN THE FUTURE.thankyou for sharing.
I was thinking the same thing. That and how much I'd love to see Martha Stewart or F.F. Coppola live in one of these tiny things. All of this stuff is always good for the masses, but not for the elite. "Here, you live a minimalistic live in a micro house with no possessions and drive a tiny eco-friendly car, and we'll keep our Malibu mansions and servants and private jets and limos."
What? What was the point of this? does this help anyone do anything or buy something? This isn't a home! this has NO ROOF, it is NOT a shelter of any kind. At least it is a semi-mobile cafe. At most it is an art-installation. There is no new design concept here, at all! Sorry to sting you, but this is just a folly.
What's it's purpose ... It certainly is not a house, any group of 2nd year engineering students could build this. These folks are acting like it's something that has never been done. Most big RV's have more technology than this. Really pointless, the rich super elite are so gullible it's pathetic. Most of the comments here are much more entertaining than the video ...
I'm with most of the people here. This is NOT an engineering marvel or some sort of housing breakthrough. It's not practical, functional, attractive or even useful. What is it? To me it looks like a toy for a bunch of ignorant elitists to stare at in approval when even they don't know what they're looking at. What did it cost to build, like $1,000,000 of some poor investor's $ duped into believing it will corner the market? I'm still trying to figure out what this thing is supposed to be.
Yep its useless, ugly, conceptually retarded, impractical and a complete waste of money. Oh yeah that’s why they call it art. Hahaha No wonder Martha Stewart was there. lol
This is the most idiotic concept.. Unless your living in a Mall.. what the hell use is it.. and just how much privacy do you have? Total waist of 12 minutes
When your house is open like that, you wake up in the morning with nothing left, except the bed you slept on. Chances are, wet and soggy in a little rain. Burnt up under the summer sun.
I was impressed by their vision. I like their innovation, but when Adam Kalkin says he has no idea what the Transformers are he just showed me either has a bad sense of humor or he is out of touch with reality. I say this because they showed shots of Manhattan throughout the film. I'm pretty sure that he has (1) driven through there and (2) Paramount pictures actually advertised their movies there. Great project notheless. I don't see how it can be used on a mass scale. But great creativity.
Frankly, I don't care who was in the audience. What is the point of this? Why would you need all that for anything other than trying to impress celebrities at a show? There are people out there now, creating prefab homes for actual customers, the point being to build them in a controlled, efficient indoor environment, truck them to the site, then be able to put them together very quickly. Very smart, practical and money saving. This is none of these. This just come across as a very expensive gimmick.
" I didnt play . I pick up dirt ." Good pick up line with that reporter huh? ;) I'm sure when all the guests leave , you can close back that house for some private time . lol.
Interesting. At first I thought it was a cool concept until it opened up and there is no roof nor walls I between the spaces ! Was this intended to sit in a open loft space instead of a functional home outside ? If not I have a simpler more functional idea for a shipping container house
Hello, was very taken with the building process of this house. I particularly liked the white finish inside that the two guys in the video "painted". Do yo mind telling us a bit more about the white product? what is it and how does it work? Big thanks for the post
great concept but that's all its se is for is just a show home......very clever for the first ever push button home......look forward to seeing if they take it another step
Adam Kalkin is my spirit animal.
Here let me save you 12 minutes. It's not a home. Homes have a roof.
Thank you very much.
Exactly... its a non-moving, unfolding campsite... Best part is; you still have to pitch a tent, or buy a tarp...=D
Thanks but too late, I've wasted 12 minutes.
I'm glad I fast forward...
He has a personality that says.. I'm above you. I wonder if that's where all the thumbs down comes from
+SupaLexy (SupaNautica & MotoLexy) After the video I came right to the comments thinking the same thing. Especially the end when they were talking about transformers. Guaranteed he knew what transformers were...
The title The Emperors New Clothes comes to mind
Bobb Bob I have this book.
So true.

+Sasha Seyb You're just jealous of the woman at the end actually speaking to this man.
"I didn't play, I played with dirt" What an asshole. HAHA
right! so so cool... love the ingenuity!
12 minute video and the actual "house" is shown for 20 seconds. It's not even a house. That's a really expensive, pretentious patio set.
May be i'm missing something but i always thought a house had a roof and walls all around any rooms. You could certainly get back to nature in this.
When Kalkin finds out about Winnebagos, he's gonna cry. They can stay outside and come roofed, you don't need a crew of 25 and semi to move them, and they have lots of buttons. OOoooo, woo. Lots more time for playing with dirt.
Maybe the missing parts, roof, walls, doors, windows, shower, toilet and more... Come as options? lol
Agree with those who stated, a complete waste of resources, by the way I missed seeing the 6 bedrooms, more looked like a bedroom, kitchen, dining, bathroom. All Plastic ??? Wow this was so innovative.
It's time to change the concept of building houses, the future is here and my compliment to all those people making such wonderful work!!!!
the way he talks about architecture and describes his work you could tell he's brilliant.
thank you so much!!! xx
what a stupid idea. how much did it cost to build this with all the hydraulics etc. then you end up with a house with no roof. how is this remotely sustainable? how does this help house people when this probably cost double what a standard house would cost.

I think its the coolest thing I've seen in the housing concept for a while now!!!
Playing with dirt is probably where he developed his "charming" personality.

I'm pretty sure that's espresso. I'd like to see someone drink a gallon of espresso.
and thats why the south is clogged with obesity and heart issues.
so you're saying that drinking tea causes obesity? last time i checked, junk food was the problem. WOW! the more you know. I'll be sure to think about how much of an idiot you are next time im chugging my ice cold beverage.

A house? more like a fancy deployable picnic table and lounge.
If you're super curious what the thing looks like, jump to the last 2 minutes. Then scratch your head and wonder... wth?? If you're trying to make sense, don't worry, so are the rest of us with more brains than money. I LOVE the idea of shipping container housing... this is not it.
This is an awesome concept! Going completely green with these houses!
ha. ha. ha.... oooh tracy metro :) -- the lacquer is stunning - agreed.
Wow, what an amazing concept. On a side note, the CRT is not dead!
thanks!!

I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW NEGATIVE PEOPLE CAN BE! I THINK IT'S A STROKE OF GENIUS...KEEP IT UP!!!
Lol the designer... I'm always fascinated as to how people can carry themselves in such a way... I could benefit from some of his qualities...
ESPECTACULAR!!!
I think this is ideal for outdoor parties.
More like a "Million dollar art installation"
Ultimate example of the adage "it's not what you know. It's who you know."
waste of time and money
+Pat Studer Yeah, I think this is supposed to be art or something. At least I doubt they mean for it to be functional. I mean, you couldn't stock it with anything since it would all fall onto the floor each time you folded it up or down. Just something rich people can have to show off with.
Awesome design, the people that don't get it, just don't get it. Keep the open mind and free spirit flowing.
I want to see more of Rita 2:48. Poor Rita.
That's really cool!
Awesome!
This could potentially turn into a huge business. Imagine taking your home anywhere in this world.
Here's the thing. Transformers are really very unpleasant places to live or work. Every time you want to change activities you have to reconfigure your space. Здорово! Классная идея!
LOL. It's a full house, as long as you have a building big enough to open it up in.
In my eyes it's not a waste of time or money. Everyone gets paid - job creation and security. Why does it have to be practical? It's design - design improves and is all around you. It's what's possible. Creative minds help make this world interesting and exciting along with people who can put the idea into fruition. Good all around to me!

"Yeah, I played with dirt" Lol!
OK, that is 12 min of my life I will never get back.

What is the practical application for this?
Illy Coffee?
Wasting a ton of time & money.
Andrew Roby
There is no money and no time. He is having tons of fun:)
It's moveable.
Victor Houle and completely open to the elements
Great, a "house" without roof which for which you need a crane and a lorry to move it. Great, mankind is making huge leap forward.
For one. Its not a house at all. Two. Its ugly as hell. It looks useless. No roof. Just a big expensive ugly monster. Yuk!
you don't know your azz from a hole in the ground!
love that final comment "I played with dirt" I hear him that is so much me.
This house mixed with the ipad sistem... PERFECT!! jajaj

this is true... but this was meant to be an art installation :)
Idéia brilhante!
haha yes! i didnt see that at first... but now that you mention it...
I completely respond to folks who think (wait for it...) outside of the box. The shiny white lacquer is stunning.
Love watching the growth of this channel! Undoubtedly will be a success! Keep up the great work! ;O)-
What's it's purpose ... It certainly is not a house, any group of 2nd year engineering students could build this. These folks are acting like it's something that has never been done. Really good stuff. He reminds me a lot of William Massie and American House 08.

haha a perfect SPACEStv marriage
"I don't know what transformers is. I don't have a TV. I played with dirt!"
Yeah it shows hahaha :D
我非常喜歡這種設計概念
可以省下裝潢的 拆除 只要裝潢好
並且可以隨時移動,去趟活動宣傳分享的場合 也很環保!
To be great is to be misunderstood....Go!
I dont understand, where would u put it theres no roof and no walls around the whole thing anyone could get in ????
I agree... this was a waste of time, what a piece of pretentious crap! It's not even functional for anything!!!
Yep its useless, ugly, conceptually retarded, impractical and a complete waste of money. Oh yeah that’s why they call it art. Hahaha No wonder Martha Stewart was there. lol
GeorgeBonez Yup and will probably win the turner prize lol
Roof and the rest of the walls ?
***** As long as your new home is located inside another building its fantastic !!!
+1965ace And as long as you don't need to stock it with supplies, blankets, etc., that would all fall on the floor each time you folded it up.
+zzdfhgdhd lol😂😂
LMAO "he didn't play with Transformers he played with dirt at 10yrs old"
This is the most idiotic concept.. Unless your living in a Mall.. what the hell use is it.. and just how much privacy do you have? Total waist of 12 minutes
wuawua is house increible.....
A house has a roof, by the dictionary and legal definition, this is not a house. Thats like saying sandals are the same as rain boots.
When your house is open like that, you wake up in the morning with nothing left, except the bed you slept on.
Chances are, wet and soggy in a little rain.
Burnt up under the summer sun.
that was so fucking epic, did you see the way that box transformed into the biggest fail ever? haha
houses usually have roofs, and beds + couches are not made of fiberglass.
I'd say next time go with a roof instead of a gigantic espresso machine.
These need to be in Louisiana. So when a hurricane is coming, they have time to leave with all of their stuff. :)
Shipping containers are a great frontier for architecture, but this is extravagant, impractical and useless.
Erm..... Dude, wheres the roof?
Frankly, I don't care who was in the audience. What is the point of this? It's a prefab home cut apart, which yes, you could use to get such a home into a restricted space, but why the silly hydraulics? How much would something like that add to the cost? Why would you need all that for anything other than trying to impress celebrities at a show? There are people out there now, creating prefab homes for actual customers, the point being to build them in a controlled, efficient indoor environment, truck them to the site, then be able to put them together very quickly. Very smart, practical and money saving. This is none of these. This just come across as a very expensive gimmick.
" I didnt play . I pick up dirt ." Good pick up line with that reporter huh? ;) I'm sure when all the guests leave , you can close back that house for some private time . lol.
You've said it perfectly.
Fav part of the entire thing 11:12 XD LMAO I played with dirt XD
love the idea, as i have several locations and would like to order 3 of them
Wow, Benedict Cumberbatch building homes...Amazing.
Cool guy!!
how is this a house? A house implies there will be full walls, and a roof for your protection...the doesn't even have complete walls! Come on!
Is this supposed to be art or something practical?
I have a "Jayco" "Pop Up" trailer,...but at least it has a friggin roof! This is nice ...if he's promoting hydrolic's.
I didn't see anything about it that makes it livable.
great concept but that's all its se is for is just a show home......very clever for the first ever push button home......look forward to seeing if they take it another step
