Knipex: The O-slash is diameter, the marking is saying that it can handle up to 1.6mm diameter solid copper (Cu) leads and 1.0mm diameter solid steel (Fe) leads. That's 14 or higher AWG copper and 17 or higher AWG steel for single-stranded leads - more or likely much more if multi-stranded. Note that the blue fake ones you show from the 10-pack is rated for 0.040"/1.0mm diameter copper (again on the side), so they're much weaker than the Knipex and I'm not sure if that number is even real or just copied from the original, so it could be even weaker than that.

    • @adriansdigitalbasement
      @adriansdigitalbasement 7 днів тому +10

Thank you for the explanation! And I've been using the Knipex and they are SO MUCH better than the crap blue ones. I will definitely be sticking to name brand from now on...... too bad I bought the 10 pack but perhaps they can make good stocking stuffers for other people. :-) I have a feeling whatever is written on the blue ones is a total lie as well.

@@adriansdigitalbasement Or just as backup, they're so cheap you can have them everywhere at the same time. Yeah, the markings on the blue ones are probably just copied from whatever they cloned it from, so the difference is probably even larger. I mostly cut zip-ties with mine which they excel at thanks to the smaller jaws (until damaged trying to cut something more solid).

Adrian, sorry if this has been asked before.. have you ever considered the dummy battery replacement adapters for you camera? Then no more worries about charging for your fixed cameras. They just load in and leave a pigtail hanging out to plug into some usb/etc power source. I've used them on various canon/sony/panasonic cameras with no trouble. Enjoyed the video! VCFMW was awesome!

It would likely be a good idea for this Panasonic as I never use it away from the desk anymore.... It's a good camera in that is never overheats, but yeah the battery issue is becoming annoying now. The USB port is Micro USB and it slowly drains the battery even though my other camera, a Sony (also Micro USB) can run indefinitely over USB power and never drains the battery. I'll look into it, thanks!

My best friend had a ZX81 clone and we absolutely loved playing with the thing, warts and all. Typing in basic listings, changing things around to see what happened, making our own little programs was awesome. I do remember the 32K memory expansion being very finicky and the slightest touch would dislodge the connector and crash the system so that didn't get used much, but other than that, I only have fond memories of that thing. Granted, we were only around 7-8 years old at the time so it might not have taken much to impress us 😀

Thanks for the SID comparison. I'm glad all these replacement projects exist and are under active development but I absolutely prefer to use the real thing and will continue to as long as it remains viable to do so. Many modern .sid compositions seem to be for the 8580 and I can't help but wonder if more effort has been put into replicating the sound of that variant instead of the 6581.

    • @adriansdigitalbasement

Yeah it's quite likely more work has just gone into the 8580 -- I also think it's more consistent and potentially easier to emulate, but I might be wrong there. I do really enjoy being able to switch between either type though (with the emulators) so for now I left the SIDKick DAC in my ZIF machine, and jumped the pads so the DAC is fed right out though the computer's audio jack.

Thats 6581R4AR, not AR4, meaning 4th release (R4) with Advanced Resonance (AR?). That's why the distortion is more emphasised on "regular" 6581 and R3 was the most common one. I remember having a discussion with 'Jeff' in ircnet (I guess at least 10 years ago) about the distortion effect and he wished that there was even more distortion. Very happy with their product and their service. I've also had good luck with Knipex flush cutters. I have a few sets of Hakko as well. They are pretty good. The pin on one Hakko bent/stretched when I cut some brass screws that were way bigger than what the pliers should be used for, but the blades were undamaged. I bought a new set, but then put a hardened hex socket screw in and the broken and then repaired pair worked as well as a new set. So Hakko is on the "Nice List" as well. I bought a pair of Klein flush cutters and they were junk and the blade didn't align. Klein is supposed to be decent, but as far as I'm concerned they are on the "Naughty List"

One thing you seem to have missed is the fact that you can emulate dual SID with one board alone.
1:13:15 that's the suggested maximum wire diameter specs they are designed to cut. Given that it's German, those are either millimetres (0.063 inches for copper wires and 0.04 inches for iron wires) or AWG Metric (I believe it's called?, meaning 0.000031155in² cross-section for copper and0.000012167in² cross-section for iron, equivalent to AWS 34 for Cu and between AWG 38 to 39 for Fe).
1:17:03 if you go to his webpage instead of his GitHub, then to the Retro Computing section and click on TI-99/4A, it describes the TIPI as a "storage and network solution", so basically a Wi-Fi adapter and SSD in one.

The analog filters are the hardest part for people programming a synthesizer. That's why there was the most differentiation audible between those SID emulations. The pure waveforms are less difficult. Probably they need to analyze specific sounds when the filter is being engaged from the original SID and look about the harmonics. The ARM SID was the closest.

The Pippin was a game console that was a joint project between Apple and Bandai, the Japanese toy company. It was both a specific console and the name for the overall open multimedia platform, that Apple licensed to Bandai, the makers of the first and only console/device to feature the platform/OS. The Pippin console was based on Apple PPC hardware and the classic Mac OS system. It was intended to be both a game console and a multimedia device, sort of like the CD-I platform from Phillips and Sony.
It was all a complete failure. Apple had intended to license the technology to other companies but no one beyond Bandai Pippin showed interest and once it’s Pippin console failed, the final nail was in the coffin for the Pippin platform.

It was an incredible show. Sorry I wasn't able to talk with you, but I was tied to several tables, talking to many interesting & curious customers. It was busy. Next year, if you're looking for chip clips, we'll have some at our table, for a very reasonable price.
As always, I enjoy your content. Keep up the good work!

Hey Adrian xx Thanks again for a great video.. AArgh I so wish I could attend an event like the VCF you were at recently. That said, There are some great vintage computer, audio and HAM radio rallies and trade shows here in the U.K The C64 SID sounds will always sound good to my ears. You know why ? Because I had a Spectrum 🤣😆🤣 Also though, I guess although you tried the mqny different versions. the sound will never sound as good as it did back then x Love your show .x.

For music the originals do have a richer sound though.

The Swinsid certainly doesn't sound "right", pitch is off for starters sounding a little flat, but it sounds much richer than the SID Kick. The latter sounds band-limited and rather "rough". ARMSID IMHO sounds better than the SID Kick. ReSID sounds richer than SID Kick also but the filter action is quite different to the original.

A Brit here. Almost 60 now. Back in school days, kids would either love or hate Parma Violets. I see there is a wikipedia page now as well. Apparently Parma Violets flavoured cheese and cider have been made. Going back, it also says that lozenges flavoured with violets were made before 1620.

Generally for emulations using PWM if filter is not ideal, listening on speakers (by analog path) may do much difference.
I don't know it was noticable on speakers but about @30:00 in Ode to C64 on YT sounds have diffrent "timbre", but maybe it is only YT compression algorithm artifact

yeah that's a cross stitch. My mom does it. The color changes are litterally tieing it off in the back and then starting with new thread, but you can do all of one color and then switch. It's not like a printer. You can do each "pixel" in any order you please.

Also, I snitched an old pare of (cutical?) cutters from my wife and they worked perfectly. Just an idea I thought I'd throw out there. Oh, and I snitched the old cutters after getting new ones for her. I even got a smooch out of the deal!

It seems like the non ARM SID replacements all seem to lack the distortion of a real SID. It's really noticeable on the big DOOSH of the drum. I mean I have a later model C64 with the newer SID model, which would sound quite different to yours, but it still has that distinct distortion that every C64 I've ever used had.
I mean, still a great device, especially for the price, I'm just trying to give some constructive feedback in case the people doing the firmware are reading.

I remember using those disks. I had tons of them at my house back in the 80s. And lots of what is called Shareware programs. I ran a BBS on my computer in 1995. I even found a new friend when I connected to his BBS. While I was looking at his BBS, he did a chat mode with me, and he found out I lived close, and I met him at his house. He is still a very cool friend to me. And I still have a SCSI drive. I have an older computer I use and still have it running on that SCSI drive!

A quick on Amazon and that Knipex seems to go for $27. It may be worth it if it lasts and works really well, but I doubt you'll buy spares. Instead, the cheap ones will be your spares for when you can't find the good one or don't want to risk damaging it.

Hi Adrian I think the 2 products you wee sent working together with the dac and pwm give the most accurate sound of how it sounded when recorded from the original synths.
I think with the original commodore 64 sids remember were from. The early 1980s. So tthose original sid chips could not accurately reproduce the actaul original sounds.
And Adrian I have a, sound engineer like ear.
So I can hear all the sounds even from the original sid but with those 2 dac and pwm cards combined together I can hear all the sounds accurately and cleanly which is the intent.
And I am still recovering from a ruptured ear drum.
Hope that helps but the fact that those cards can so vividely and accurately capture and reproduce your original sounds so well and clear is huge progress.

You should really get dummy batteries for your cameras so they're just powered directly off USB. They'll run cooler, and if they're mounted in a fixed position on your bench you can just leave the dummy battery hooked up there. Pop in a real battery if you need to move the cameras elsewhere and use them on a tripod or something.

A sound spectrum analyzer would give all of your viewers a clear picture of what you are explaining during you sound sampling, don't you think? I have never had or used one, but I am sure that will give a clear picture. I guess an oscilloscope would do the same thing as well. I'm not sure, just throwing a couple things out there for some people that may not hear the differences. I hear them and may just get those chips to test my theory out. Keep up your great work, and thank you for what you do.

It was definitely a 'free for all' over in the free pile area. I brought down a couple boxes myself to contribute - I brought in the first box and when I remembered to check a short while later, I was satisfied the box had been well and truly pillaged except for one broken part. When I was about to leave, I brought in the remainder and people were already reaching over to stick their nose in the box before I had a chance to set it down. :)
