I played high school ball with a 3rd baseman that had freakishly big hands but insisted on an 11.5 inch glove. He taped his laces like that. He had to loosen the laces between the fingers so his hand would fit better but he hated the 'floppy' feeling in the fingertips. He started adding tape to make that feeling go away. He also said that adding 1/2 inch of tape between each finger gave him an extra 1.5 inches of spread at the fingertips. That extra half-ball of glove opening made it easier to field backhands and short hops more consistently (according to him anyway).
He is one of the most exciting prospects I’ve ever watched. He’s still really raw, but when he connects the barrel to the ball… he hits the ball as hard as anyone. Once he starts to learn how to hit for more contact, he’s going to be a force with a bat, defensively, he’s already a freak. Super excited to see how he plays out
I thought maybe it was to make small adjustments that can be done in a few seconds, during the game, and put off adjustment of the actual laces until after (or maybe never, if he was just adjusting for the conditions of that day).
O'Neil cruz has an arm, he has the power to throw and hit. He has amazing potential. Man has the hight to be using such a big glove in the infield. I wouldnt use it since im on the smaller size of hight but its nice that he has a comfortable glove that he can use.
The tape is there to keep the laces tight but to not have the spacing between each finger contract. Also makes it easier to keep tension if you tighten between each finger and tape as you go.
Ok from what I can gather being 6’6 playing baseball that’s smart to put the tape in between the fingers. For him it’s a natural feel of his hand being kinda open so now he has more control of the glove it’s literally apart of him
Always used an outfielder sized glove at SS and third base. Had a criss-cross open web too. The extra leather at the end of the fingers and the criss-cross web took more spin off of hard hit grounders and line drives. The ball didn't spin out of the glove the way I saw that happen with smaller gloves with closed webs. Accelerated spin on smoking hot grounders and line drives would spin them right out of small gloves and the ball would run right out of a closed web. Never had a problem getting the ball out of the pocket of the large glove either. Never found the supposed wisdom that it's easier to get the ball out of a small glove to be true.
Nah. It’s definitely true. My son started the season with his outfielder glove he got his freshman year and fumbled the ball multiple times. He said he felt like he couldn’t find the ball inside the glove. He’s 6’3 without shoes, big hands and 6’7 wingspan, so he has a 12.5 inch outfielders glove. Hes always been solid at 3rd and short but if you seen him field with the big glove you’d never know that was the case.

I use to use a outfielders glove on shortstop my whole career and it’s a difference in a good way. Catching bumpy grounders became way easier cause if you caught the ball in a bad way it was still forgiving and easier to field then using an infielders glove. Just break the glove in the way you see fit and it will come naturally.
@@SerendipityTrickShots it’s a little different when he’s batting around the mendoza line and has a sub .250 obp, he flat out is just not a good batter right now
The subtle flare and loose laces increase the size of the opening to his glove. The downside to loose laces in the fingers is that overtime the fingers can become flimsy - moving all around with little stability. By adding tape, it turns the laces in between the fingers into a support mechanism like rebar - keeping the fingers apart but now firm and stable. You can replace it as much as you’d like, but if you use the cloth bat tape, it will stay and serve its purpose for as long as needed. I do the same and learned it from a couple international big leaguers in the early 90s.
The one thing I haven't seen mentioned...He is 6'7, and that is a really long way to bend down to get a grounder, I imagine the extra length makes it easier for him to make contact with the ground.
I always did two in the pink, played SS in college, when i would get a BRAND NEW glove i would use straight up putting two in the pinkie was just more comfortable, and i used a 11 1/4
Speaking of short gloves and reach, I remember there was a time when I thought "Oh for sure the shortstop is just gonna make a diving play.", but then the ball was just out of reach of his glove, and I feel like if he was using a 12 or 12.25 inch glove, he would've snagged it.
Think he adds the tape to keep things tight like you mentioned, but without having to tighten the fingers lace so he has more "area" he can technically cover with the glove. Also since he has such large hands he probably likes it to feel looser at the base while still being tight on the fingertips.
My guess was that tape is good for adjustments during the game. You may fail to complete a tape adjustment, but you'll never be caught with your laces completely untied. Acting as a spacer to keep the fingers spread even with tight laces makes sense though.
Its made with a deep softball pocket and wide pattern for mens 12in softball, probably no palm or heal padding , Gloveworks makes my gloves that way when i order with extra long lacing to make tight fits

I played HS ball and a little adult league and I used to be a major glove head back in the day. 4:44 the tape makes a ton of sense to me. It’s like when a catcher tapes around the straps on their gear to hold it in place. If the laces can’t move, then the fit should realistically stay the same all the time, and not have a need for tightening as it wears.

Hey bro kinda of a dumb question but I’m getting the autism speaks glove and was wondering if I could use it in outfield even though it’s a infield glove
The video is neat but I have one criticism. For your safety, and there may be no bad bounces indoors, you should be wearing shoes with toes in them. I may be out of it because I’m 69 but I would never play ball with sandals on. I’ve had my big toenail ripped off and I had shoes on. Be careful man. Bad things happen unexpectedly.
I know this was a couple weeks ago at this point but one possible explanation for the tape between the fingers is to keep the tightness gained by pulling the leather in place for longer. Maybe? lol
I know this is gonna sound weird, and every culture is different, but what he does is a very common thing is DR, I played for 7 years baseball, and I did, every short stop did the same with his glove if that short stop had one, cuz sometime you don't have glove in DR so that's a kind way to identify a glove for short stop, and is more weird to don't see this Korean often in the big league by Dominicans players cuz believe me, 8/10 do this in Dominican.
Also the tape ain't nothing special, usually when the glove get old it gets soft, that would be a reason or just for beauty in the glove, combination with the uniform
I feel like this glove would work phenomenally for normal sized human beings that play infield at slow pitch softball. I might have to try it. I'm thinking of this glove vs the rawlings kb17.
I know this is unrelated to the video but I have a red 12 inch Mizuno Dual Monarch from japan. Still kinda stiff and I got it 2-3 weeks ago. How should I break it in
Thanks bro! I still think the best option is to go to the store and feel the gloves in person but then look online. You can often find them cheaper and more color ways online at places like justgloves.com

I’ll get to it but it’ll be a while
Good video man
Thank you sir!
The tape is to hold the spacing for width
I always bend my glove so the fingers touch the heal to flare it out. I do it constantly throughout the game by bending it on my hip or thigh.
Is the 44 C2, a good glove? I can’t remember if you’ve done a video on one yet
I haven’t done a video on it
It’s ok for the price but it’s nothing special at all
I feel like this glove would work phenomenally for normal sized human beings that play infield at slow pitch softball. I might have to try it. I'm thinking of this glove vs the rawlings kb17.
I have used a 12in DW5 a2k playing inf in softball and love it
we just gonna ignore the sandals?
Just let it happen
Did u do a rev1x review?
Yessir
2 actually, you’ll have to go check those out
Fun fact O’Neil Cruz played double a baseball Ian stadium near me
Can you do a Josh Donaldson glove video please?
I’ll try and make on in the future!
I know this is unrelated to the video but I have a red 12 inch Mizuno Dual Monarch from japan. Still kinda stiff and I got it 2-3 weeks ago. How should I break it in
I’d say go watch some of my break in videos. Even my more recent video on the Dustin Pedroia break in
@@ballgloveking Thanks for the tip
Love your content by the way! No ads, no long intros, no begging for subs, just overall great
0:24 Greg Brown, is the best announcer in baseball. Clear the deck, *CANNONBALL COMING* Don't @ me.
Lol
Tatis was gaming 2 gloves at SS, both Mizuno Pro, a black single post (cross web) and a blonde H wen Im pretty sure the blonde was 12 in.
You are correct 👌
Hey Chris I was wondering where the best place to get gloves was online or in store? Loving these MLB players glove vids keep up the good work!
Thanks bro!
I still think the best option is to go to the store and feel the gloves in person but then look online.
You can often find them cheaper and more color ways online at places like justgloves.com
@@ballgloveking I agree cause if you buy it in the store there are a lot of people that have had the glove in their hand
For me it was just always bend the thumb, pend the pinkie, push the top down like him and then punch the pocket and get ready lol
Lol that is exactly how I used to where my glove and form and fit it.. but I actually wore a slightly smaller one then 11.5 lol.. and that was playing center.. almost a youth model glove they were so small lol
Elly and Oneil are phenomenal players
He should do shohei
Agreed
Cruz has played very well. So well, he will be traded for future prospects. Hate being a Pirates fan. Every time one of those "future prospects" rises above, we trade him for more future prospects. Pirates: MLB best minor league team. ugh
At least you aren’t the As
I guess you can say it’s Cruz-fied
Exactly
