- Today's video discusses the CHAPEA missions, a series of analog missions that have people spending an entire year in a Mars simulation on Earth. We discuss what the objectives are, what it's like inside the Mars bubble and how it helps our future missions to Mars. #mars #nasa #space

Essentially, its a scifi themed LARP. In case of danger, its a mars themed escape room.
Yeah…but with cool space suits! And a really high budget!
I don't think l can handle a one way trip to Mars. I am gonna sit this one out.
Then the Mars simulation may be for you! 1 year of pretend and then you're all done!
Thanks for this update!
You're welcome!
I am a big fan of your reality videos. Glad to see you are posting some more science related videos. Subscribed and liked!
Aw, thanks! And welcome!
Would love to visit mars but wouldn't want to live there..respect to the people doing the simulations though moving us forward towards being a multiplanetary species
Agreed! It's a special breed...
Great to see the subscribers slowly ticking up - I'm sure it will explode soon. The content is great fun and very informative. .... Now, I'm off to see if I can go to Mars, I think being a stowaway might be my only chance 🤣
Aw, thanks so much! Crazy kind of you! Yeah, it seems to be ticking up! And pssst….your stowaway secret is safe with me. 😉
They should be made to live on a bus for 6 months before and after entering the habitat. That would be slightly more accurate 😂
🤣 You’re probably right!
Spill it Marion! Did you see the Northern Lights??
I WISH! They'd have to be pretty impressive to puncture LA's super bright smogosphere.
I just go to the red centre here in the Aussie outback. Get my Mars like fix that way. Just as isolated😂
🤣 Ray’s like, no thanks guys, got my OWN Mars analog over here…
@@marionrkerr 👍😎

Thanks for Sharing 🌹 I’d happily spend 10 years on Mars just watching your videos, but I’d much rather spend 100 years by your side, Mar(ion), on Mar(s) or Pluto-I don't care where. .♥
☺️ You’re very welcome!

Another vote for CHAPEA! Love it!

We got another one! 😁
Having watched this, my biggest takeaway is what the hell kind of Airbnb's has Marion been staying in?
😂 Apparently all the Mars simulation ones!
@marionrkerr Why do I get the feeling that when I'm looking for an Airbnb that has a pool, you're looking for one with an airlock and a hydroponics garden?
And your point is…😆
@@marionrkerr Hah, assuming that I have a point was your first big mistake. The random characters I'd get by hitting my head off my keyboard and then posting that would have more meaning.
😂
If things are going slow the controllers could switch it up from Mars Dune to Mars DooM.
😂
I would definitely go to analog Mars. I'm also definitely interested in any dubious psychological experiments anyone is conducting. No that's not healthy.
I'm weirdly intrigued by them too! What are they?? 🤔
@@marionrkerr Sadly I think we missed the boat on the really sketchy ones like the milgram obedience study and the Stanford prison experiment. It would be nearly impossible to get something like that funded on account of the ethical guidelines. Probably for the best but still.
@@robloggia RIP sketchy psychological experiments. 😉
I couldn't help but notice that at least one of the crew members was married. (and not to another crew member) A year is a long time. Can we assume that what happens in CHAPEA stays in CHAPEA?
😂 I assume it’s like a million other jobs that keep ppl from their partners for long stints…but man, that’d be a juicy twist!
Personally being strapped to a few thousand tons of rocket fuel is a feature not a bug
Pssst….same. 😉
I actually hope I get the chance to be strapped to a rocket in about 10ish years to do the real thing. And if they’re still doing this in 5 years, and if I have a masters degree around then, then I’d love to. It’d be hard to leave my family, but I could see how this would be beneficial for the mission.
Yeah, aside from the time away from family…it seems awesome! But actually leaving the planet…such a dream. 🤞🏻
From a psychological point of view, wouldn't it be better to take them to a location on the planet they do not know with blindfolds as they travel etc and they do not know how far away the nearest human is, to give them a true sense of being alone far from safety. If your not sure what country your in or how long someone can come and get you, that might affect you more?
Also Marion, your be great in a sci-fi film, lost in space trying to science the shit out of it to get home. What moon or planet do you fancy being on?
Yeah, I see what you mean as far as making them feel isolated. But I think the lack of any outside noise really helps as well not being able to leave, frankly. I’m sure it feels very isolating.
I think Europa and its underground ocean would be amazing to see!
I'd do it but I'm too old, and I'm not American, I smoke and I'm not healthy! Bugger!
Yeah…one or two of those maaaay be deal breakers. How about we put you in the Mars bubble for smokers? I’m sure that’ll be a thing some day. 😉
That depends if Boeing is flying.
🤣
Okay Marion, I will accompany you to mars 🥰
If you can grow me some tomatoes, you're in! 😄
Haha, spent 10 years growing tomatoes here in the UK before changing careers and going to university training in IT. So qualified Tomato expert and Computer scientist lol 🍅🚀💻
@@tjcarr70 The total package! 😆 But I just grew my first strawberries and it feels AH-mazing! 🍓
This remembers me of Biosphere II that was an unmitigated disaster. But let's hope NASA has a better selection process than what was basically a bunch of hippies financed by a millionaire.
I mean, they SEEM pretty solid. Their astronaut choices have always been pretty good….but they’ve got 2 months to have it all go sideways! 😉
nope I like earth even as messed up as it is it's still the most beautiful planet in the solar system why would you want to leave all this magnificence to a baron rock millions of miles away from any real help nope not me thank you but put me in a starfighter I'm your guy that would be cool great video and as always stay beautiful, god bless and be safe!
I think it’s kind of like ppl traveling “out west”. They weren’t sure what it would be like or if it would work and they felt a million miles from home…and yet ppl went. It takes a special breed.
Did Matt Damon sign up yet? He's got the potato thing down 🙂
I didn't finish the video when i wrote that! 🤣 Same thought! lol
Ha! Brain jinx!
@@marionrkerr someone owes someone a beer. I guess I'm buyin'? lol Corona w/Lime?
@@Nielv13 Acceptable! 🍻
Quick answer: no.
Long answer: nope.
Actual long answer: Until we figure out how to not destroy our own planet, the last thing I want to do is go to a new one.
@@franimal86 Fair enough!
Hell no....
😂
mars is not for me.
Well, luckily there are gajillion other planets to choose from! Maybe you’re a Mercury man? Fancy a Saturn? 😁
@@marionrkerr i would rather be on the moon, i can see home from there
Ooh, excellent reason!
A year doing this doesn't really appeal to me. Maybe 30 days. Also, I think this channel will someday be called Marsion Kerr. Or Red Planet Redhead...
Now THAT’S a million dollar idea! 😁
@@marionrkerr 👍Mar$ion 😀
