    George Lucas initially hated the line and he apparently went apeshit over it. Lucas originally had Han Solo say "I love you, too" in the script. But most of us know that Harrison Ford came up with the "I know" line on the spot.

    What I like about that line ("I know") is also the fact that Han Solo already, repeatedly, asked Leia about her feeling all along the movie and she always eluded the answer. So she already knows he loves her (he does not have to say it), but at the last moment she wants to be sure that Han also knows that she loves him too. So in a way Han answering that he "knows" is a WAY more meaningful answer for Leia than a simple "I love you too". It's not only a "badass" line, it's the exact answer she needs.

    I always interpreted the line as Han refusing to concede defeat; if he tells her THEN that he loved her too, he’s admitting that he may not survive this, and not have the chance to tell Leia again. But Han gives a big “f*ck you” to the universe and decides he’ll say that when he’s good and ready. And sure enough he says it in Return of the Jedi.

  • @stumbling
    @stumbling 5 років тому +29

    Pshh He's playing it down. It is a brilliant line. In one way Han cannot bring himself to say he loves Leia because he doesn't want to be emotional in his final moments (as far as he knows) but also he stares deeply into her eyes as he says it, as if to say, "I know, [I've always known]", and that eye contact tells that the feeling is mutual.

      You should have read Leigh Bracketts first draft of TESB. Now that had truly awful dialogue (and she was both an Oscar winning screen writer and accomplished novelist). Lucas had to totally re-write the script & dialogue himself to make the 2nd draft, before letting Lawrence Kasdan add some extra dialogue to make the final shooting script. But for truly bad dialogue you need to read Bracketts 1st draft of TESB

      @@zgjfslkdfs Two words: Marsha Lucas, GL's ex wife. Marsha Lucas had a lot of creative influence -- partly writing but mainly editing -- over most of GL's film projects up to the time they got divorced in the early 80s. Some say she's the main reason the original Star Wars trilogy was so successful. She also worked on other films like Taxi Driver. After George divorced ML, his films were not so good, in my humble opinion. Also, respectfully, Spielberg did write "Close Encounters of the Third Kind."

    • @zgjfslkdfs
      @zgjfslkdfs 5 років тому +1

      You are correct about Marsha Lucas's contribution towards the editing of ANH but incorrect about the writing. Marsha Lucas was not a screenwriter and did not make any contribution towards ANH's script. In fact she was against the SW project in the first place. She told her peers (and Lucas) at the first test screening of the rough cut of ANH that the movie would completely bomb (Spielberg thought otherwise btw). If Lucas paid attention to his wife in the 1st place ANH may never have been made. Lucas was the true genius behind SW not his wife. BTW she divorced him (not the other way around)

However, it also resulted in many peopel thinking of him only as Han and never talking with him about other films. Thats why he gets so bitter when others bring it up in interviews for oter movies. If you were an actor that wanted to grow and continue your career but always got remembered as one role that wasnt even your favorite/best performance, youd be a bit sad and bitter too. The other part of it is that he and Carrie Fisher had had an affair on the set of A New Hope and she was madly in love with him and he wasn't madly in love with her and they put an end to their affair three months after it started but she was still in love with him and he knew it, which is why, after she, as Leia, says 'I love you', he, of all things, chose to say 'I know'. Harrison Ford definitely doesn’t Star Wars or Indiana Jones. He’s just a classical actor that we don’t see often in our time. He does a role, gives the role what it needs, takes the paycheck and onto the next role. He doesn’t get caught up in all the intricacies of the story, the world, etc. unlike Mark Hamill who rlly loves investing in his character and the world he’s in.
    Harrison just does his part, no more no less

    At least George understood tone and how crucial it is not to ruin dramatic scenes with humour. Unlike Rian.

    In the Cracked magazine (a MAD magazine competitor in 1980) Empire parody, they did something different to Han Solo. Princess Leia: “You’ve frozen him, but what are those things around him?” Vader: “Peas, carrots, and apple brown betty.” Princess Leia: “What a dastardly thing to do! You’ve turned him into a frozen dinner!”

    Softball! Why not ask Harrison if his line was the product of his the affair with Carrie Fisher?!? Jeez. He's a pilot, you'd think it was something more professional.
