@@tavo.simracing Mark Hamill Joker would not only read that line correctly, but amazingly. Actually, so would a lot of Hamill voices. George got lucky he had actors who would act his lines on their own merit.
But the thing is that he didn't do that with American Graffiti. Not that I remember, anyway... I suppose writing a believable space melodrama is more difficult than writing about the 1960s rock and roll/Friday night cruising culture.
He is a great story teller, so he did years of the talk show circuit and years of conventions, he has recited that line more then there is dollars in Lucas's net worth
Mark is the Uber star wars nerd he loves the franchise. And its not like its his only major role. He's also The Joker, and played a villain in the flash.
The problem with Mark's line is it's very much a military line. It could have been said by a Rebel officer or even Luke in Empire after some years of military service but it doesn't fit Luke the lost farm boy of A New Hope.
I think its cause in george's original intro we got to see him and biggs darklighter talking like that in secret at toschi station but his friends scenes were all cut out. Leaving the viewer thinking lukes nothing but a farmhand rather than a secret rebel fighterpilot more like poe.
I can see it working. Like many young men, Luke has fantasized about military life and being a hero. Look at all the role play in video games, who doesnt spout the occasional “Tactical line” after playing call of duty
They had a plan to join the imperial navy flightschool and steal a couple of fighters. Biggs had been training luke in secret. Its why luke gets so upset with han when he mocks him being a pilot. I think the story feels right without the needless backstory. I just wish they found a way to keep luke seeing the stardestroyers in orbit. Cause it was a really cool effect.

And the main reason that I love Ewan McGregor's young Obi-Wan is that Ewan was almost a Rhoades scholar in all things Sir Alec (may he rest in peace, what a lovely British gentleman he was)/Original Trilogy Obi-Wan. So much so that a rewatch of the prequels, then 1977 Star Wars and seeing Old Ben for the first time made me cry. Why? Because Ewan NAILED his performance in all three prequels.

Well... lets not forget that it's also been 40 years of cons and interviews and being asked to repeat it. Had Star Wars been a flop, I have a feeling Hamill would have forgotten it by now.
"Fear is their greatest defense" had Obi-Wan Kenobi written all over it. I don't know how it ended up in Luke's mouth. And as the beginning of a pile of exposition it could never work.
Late reply, but it actually makes more sense in this context. He's a farm boy with barely any experience. His only training and most profound learning experience is with Obi-Wan, which is still fresh in his mind. You'd expect him to mirror and regurgitate things that sound exactly like him. Still, the rest of it is silly. Rattling a bunch of military strategy at that stage in his life makes no sense.
Yeah, I feel like you could very easily re-write it to be workable for Obi Wan. "The path is open, though. They're expecting a full-scale assault so they wouldn't think a smaller vessel would try to sneak by. Fear is their only defense."
@@dethhollow That would work a lot better. The line has good parts, "fear is their only defense" perfectly sums up the idea and themes of the Death Star and the Empire. It's just clunky with all of that minutiae about unknown planets and military strategy.

Totally agreed. Jake added the "kid" aspect to throw off the hard side's of the film. I actually love the prequels. Although they maybe should've waited a few years and had him carry on the role. For the sounds I still watch the Pod-race scene every once in a while . . . then the neighbours leave :D

I could not in good mind say he did a great job. His delivery, lack of emotion at times, was just horrible. Sorry his path lead him to where it did. But you can't give everyone a gold star or first place. He needed more acting lessons.

And it's not just my opinion that he was a poor choice for the role. In short he was given a silver spoon in his mouth, and he failed. Bad acting is simply bad acting. There is a huge list of actors at his age and even younger that have cemented themselves at early ages. His delivery sucked. They had to stop shooting numerous times because his delivery was off. If it was fine then they would have just rolled with it. Go take your butt over to that side of UA-cam and watch how much issue they had even in filming with him.

The actors only had the balls to fix the dialogue because it wasn’t the STAR WARS we all know yet. It was just a space film, and therefore no one had the respect for the project that actors nowadays must feel towards it. The original trilogy was really lightening in a bottle. A real group effort that made it what it was. It wasn’t just Lucas, and it shows.
No you are wrong. All movies are 'group-efforts' at the end of the day. But in the case of SW the whole project was steered by Lucas who was a genius filmmaker, editor, anthropologist, cartoonist (he drew the initial concept sketches for Ian Mcquarrie to develop into the concept art) & story-teller. So the kudos ultimately belongs to him.

@@Zodroo_Tint Lucas was always a rebel film maker. Both the SW and Indy franchises (like the classic American Grafitti) are independently made films. Both SW and AG were financed by 20th Century Fox/ Universal for the distribution rights. But the films themselves were the intellectual property of Lucas. And Lucas was never part of the 'Industry'. So he was always a rebel film maker doing things his way and not by 'committee'. Just look at the Studio controlled ST. Those horrible movies are basically show-pieces for Social Justice, Political Correctness & Woke politics. So to re-iterate Lucas is the true rebel (a very rich & successful one). It seems that it is some of the SW fans who have leaned towards the 'Industry's' way of thinking :)
At the time Lucas famously surrounded himself with people who would not stand up to him about anything.It was his way or the highway. Just look at any of the behind the scenes stuff for the prequel trilogy.

I've always wondered why the script for the prequels was so bad when it was so good for most of the originals, and it turns out it was actually just as bad all along. This explains a lot because all 6 movies had conceptually fantastic storytelling (possible exception of phantom), but what really separated the prequels from the originals was the dialogue, and it turns out that just describes George's skillset as a director.
He's actually the only OT cast member who's a legit Star Wars geek. Especially bearing that in mind I'm so bummed about how The Last Jedi pissed on his character.

It's all about leverage. Lucas was an up an coming director and had not yet developed his full ego. Alec Guinness was older and respected in the industry, so he could say anything he wanted. Harrison and George were friends and around the same age so they could have those conversations. Mark was pretty ballsy and had the least leverage, but Star Wars wasn't guaranteed to be anything at that time. When the prequels were made, Lucas was a billionaire with tons of power and a big ego. Hayden Christiansen had no power to do anything and had to be a yes man to George. I can imagine maybe Liam Neeson was the only cast member with the clout to stand up to George if he wanted to.
He also had a ton of help with the script for the original movie. A lot of his worst ideas later got refused in the prequels. Such as the slave trader.

Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. This argument has been disproved thousands of times. "Other people did all the work for George in the OT, but in the prequels, no one stood up to him and he was allowed to just do whatever he wanted." This is nothing more than "Everything I like about Star Wars (the OT) was done by other people. All the stuff I don't like (the prequels), yeah, George did all that." People challenged George in the OT, and they challenged him in the prequels too. George however was always the one in charge.
This ends with what I sincerely believe the problem with the prequels was; yes men. It wasn't Lucas, he hasn't changed. He can do great things within his limits (dialog being one of those limits). He needs collaborators. He needs someone to tell him a bad idea is a bad idea. He had this for Eps IV, V anv VI. But for the prequels, everyone around him was agreeing with everything 'Yes Mr. Lucas, Jar-Jar is a wonderful character Mr. Lucas' 'That line about sand is FANTASTIC Mr. Lucas' If he had someone to push back on some of the clunkier dialog, or get him to question some of his ideas, the prequels would have been as good as the original trilogy. Lucas can do great things, but he NEEDS collaborators, not 'yes men'.

Oh, totally! I'm watching him and I see him thinking "oh god, please don't cry, you can do this george" but like, getting your work torn asunder to your face is hard! It takes a good chunk of my willpower to not break down when people hate my stuff.
Don't let his demeanour fool you. He's a master of passive aggressive. He even became irritable when his ex-wife used to give him constructive criticism and advice when he was writing the rough draft for ANH. For example, originally he had the Death Star just sitting there in space just waiting to be attacked, that is until she suggested that it should be orbiting the planet, hence creating tension and drama. But once she'd left and he did the ROTJ Death Star battle, guess what? Yep, he had it just sitting there waiting to be blown up, just as he originally wanted!

I think Lucas' severe lack of social skills is reflected in the kind of dialogue he writes. Surrounding himself with yes men/women after 1983 didn't help either.
That's not true as George had consulted many other filmmakers about the writing within the prequels (Steven Spielberg, Tom Stoppard etc) and most of them could not be described as "yes men".

Murder By Death is such an underrated movie. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to see more of Star Wars era Alec Guinness. He handles the comedic aspects surprisingly well
who pretty much. The original series was only so good because he was heavily criticised by the actors, crew and his wife lol. Also it gets away with its flaws due to its charm.

I had an excellent teacher in high school who taught me creative writing. The advice I was given was that you need to talk what you’re writing as you’re writing it and you will find out right away if the sentence sounds natural spontaneous flowing and something that a human being would actually say. I never forgot that. Needless to say I always got excellent grades in any writing assignment I ever did
Boo ya. You had a great teacher. The excellent English style guide, Fowler's Guide to Modern English Usage, written back in the 1920s, says the same thing. It's a brilliant book, not just for writing but for thinking clearly. And Fowler says every writer should read their writing aloud, to assess the flow of the written word, the peaks and troughs, the inflections, and how the grammar and punctuation works in aid of that. Honestly, it's free online, give it a read. It's a bit archaic at times but the part about reading your own writing aloud, is significant and important. Clear writing sounds clear when read aloud. Unclear writing sounds clunky and obtuse. You had a very good English teacher. But honestly if you write, check out Fowler's. I can find a link to the section on reading aloud for you if you like. It is well worth reading.
@@hugoclarke3284 there were 3 editors working under Lucas leadership. The original editor was fired by Lucas since this cut was done without his input. The editor, I forgot the name sadly, was hired by fox because they got cold feet and had to present a cut for the board of directors at the studio. Sadly he didn't understand what Lucas was going for, plus Lucas wasn't done shooting the VFX shots at ILM and there was no music yet.

His wife Marcia only edited a third of the movie and left to work on another movie before the final edit was even completed. There were two other editors who edited the other 2/3 of the movie. For comparison, Robert Downey Jr. (one of the highest paid actors in the world) got between $50M to $75M for each Avengers movie. Sir Guinness got an amazing payday out of that deal!
I'm curious what he actually got. Studios like to hide money in subsidiaries or roll movie profits in to other expenses like sequels and marketing and such years after the movie comes out.
The last part where Mark talks about Jake Lloyd... Man, his story is heartbreaking. Imagine being a 9/10-year-old kid, landing the role of a lifetime, and having a bunch of grown adults blame YOU and say horrific things about you for something that was well beyond your control... No doubt that played a MAJOR part in the downward trajectory in his life.
I wish there was more details on what exactly was said to Lloyd. All I’ve ever heard him say directly was “Other kids would make lightsaber noises while I was around them.” I heard the exact same thing whenever I wore a Star Wars shirt to school or had to put up with the 60’s Batman theme whenever I wore my Batman shirt. You’re always going to be getting unwanted attention when you put yourself out there like that. I always rationalize that Lloyd more than likely heard every complaint and criticism I read and heard about him over the years. I was around the same age as Anakin was in Episode I and the line “All my life” made me instantly hate him for the precocious way it came across.
George is wonderful at creating worlds, things concepts and characters. He sometimes might have problems with sharing them with us, but I just feel bad for him for all the hate his dialogues got. Man just shared with us his love and hard work and we just criticize him. Kinda sad although I'm not saying it's not justified.

Michael Price there’s another line from the prequels that bothers me. When Obi Wan stumbles upon the separatists in episode 2 and hears Dooku and the separatists talking about not wanting to sign a treaty until they have Amidala’s head on their desk. One of the other separatists just randomly interjects with the phrase: “With these new battle droids we’ve created for you, you’ll have the finest army in the galaxy.” There was nothing in the conversation that lead up to that line. It was just so out of left field and out of place that it just makes me cringe every time I watch that scene. It has Lucas’s dialogue skills written all over it. lol
Michael Price He is great at world building, but isn’t that great at dialogue imo. Maybe if someone else wrote the script to the prequels, with him still coming up with the story, and he just directed them they could have been better.
As cringy as Anakin's dialogue there at the end was, if you view it as an awkward teenager raised by monks attempting to be flirtatious, it kind of makes sense.

Hey, your right, Anakin didn't know how to flert, it was his first time trying to convey himself to Padme, She's the only other person who shows Anakin kindness besides his mum and Obi-Wan, and it's why it makes Anakins turn to the darkside that much more emotional despite the dialogue in these films, George is still able to show viewers what these characters have been through, and I love it.
Hamill was 100% right. That line was horrendous. George looks kind of uncomfortable as a result I WOULD have liked to have had JarJarBinks say that line in Phantom Menace tho.
The whole world owes Jake Lloyd an apology. All of us. The whole damn world. What happened to him wasn't fair, and we either went along with it, or didn't do anything about it. I mean, I could have sent him fan mail in postage just saying "thank you for your performance :)" or something short, postage isn't expensive, and some encouragement would be nice. The film industry is brutal. Its an ocean of sharks, and to receive the kind of hate he got from everyone else outside it was cruelty on top of it all.
Its so sad that by the time the prequels rolled around the actors couldn't tell George no. He wasn't just another director, he was a legend. He needed people who would tell him no, its so sad that because of either hubris or circumstance he didn't have that.
No one in the cast & crew ever told George 'No' in the production of any of the SW films (both OT and PT). This video posted by Cinema Sources about the cast 'changing the dialogue' in the OT is a complete myth lapped up by the SW-Haters
You can probably find that on smaller/indie projects nowadays as well. I don't know how big of a deal George Lucas was at that time but he certainly wasn't the creator of STAR WARS at that time (clout wise that is, from what I've heard there, people didn't expect a success).
Mark Hamill and Charles Martinet are two guys who just love the character that they play. It’s always confused me how they never seem to get tired of talking about their character or being excited to talk about their experiences with the character. But its always nice seeing them so happy.
They both know they would probably be nobodies if not for their iconic characters. Also, voice actors tend to be more humble and relaxed then their traditional counterparts, and their work is more fun, easier, and more relaxing as well.

George Lucas is a conceptualist and a visual artist. He's not necessarily a writer of dialogue, but that is perhaps his only shortcoming. He is a very good director when motivated and (he also dreamed up "Indiana Jones" with Spielberg) and he is a pioneer in technical aspects of movie making. George Lucas doesn't need to hang his head because a bunch of internet nerds didn't have all of their expectations come true.
So true! Despite his genius, Lucas always did have some bad instincts. He benefitted by having people around him who would question him, make suggestions, and help with the writing and directing (his weakest points). This was clear from other projects, like Indiana Jones, where Spielberg had to step in and say "bad idea!" and keep things on track.

While Lucas had people around polishing his vision for 4.5.6 and apparently no one like that for 1.2.3, 7.8.9 feels to me like lots of ideas with no one in charge of setting a creative course, instead opting to copy from the older ones what they could.

I don't know how much input Alec Guinness had on his dialogue, but however much he changed it, it worked. His dialogue, and his delivery, was some of the best in the original trilogy, delivered with a wisdom and gravitas that only an actor of his experience can achieve.
If it wasn’t for Star Wars my generation might never have known who Alec Guinness was. That would have been a tragedy. Although Star Wars wasn’t his beat work it inspired a lot of younger fans to watch some of his older stuff and appreciate it. Great actor.
Yeah, the dialog and decision to have Jedi speak so robotically was his biggest mistake. Other than that, I prefer the prequels to the current movies. Oh and that awful younglings mess.
The sad thing is that Mark Hamill tried to give ideas to J.J. during the pre-production of The Force Awakens AND to Rian Johnson during The Last Jedi ... the former of which, as Hamill said, "was accommodating, but basically gave me a pat on the head and told me to go away", and the latter is an egotistical little manchild who wanted things his way - which was fundamentally and retroactively destroying Luke Skywalker as a character. Mark Hamill looks so depressed in TLJ interviews - such a fun-loving guy who got to play one of the most recognized and beloved heroes in sci-fi was then forced to play "Jake Skywalker", the most miserable loser in the galaxy. :(
Actually he didn't. Look at the video again. Lucas said he filmed Hamill saying that infamous line but had to cut the whole scene out due to timing issues. In fact no-one (Guiness or Ford) got Lucas to change the dialogue in ANH. He had total control over everything in SW (as both director & executive producer)
In the audition clip, the line actually doesn't sound that bad. Plus, Mark even admits intellectually every part of that line makes sense and gives information. If they smoothed out a couple words I still think that line could've worked. Goodness knows they kept similar lines in ANH anyways (both Luke and Han say a lot of densely-packed lines), so it's not like it was going to be out of place.
A great example of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts. Alec was a stroke of genius as well...myself an aging man at this point, I find his presence in scenes enriching to them in ways that are difficult to articulate. While the later films didn't really recapture whatever that spark was for the kid in me, watching good hearted discussions about just what a phenomenon this was feeds that childlike wonder. "it will take a few moments for the navicomputer" is actually a good and necessary line. Its building tension because theyre being chased and it explains why they cant just instantly go into hyperspace especially since they couldnt really make a very good visual representation of the navicomputer working given the visual limits though the delivery is awkward. Would be better as "just gotta wait for the navicomputer" just short and simple remember hes a space smuggler a good pilot yes but not someone who will speak grammatically correct
Also, not every piece of highly sophisticated equipment needs to always be called by it's assigned name. I highly doubt that a gunslinger-ish smuggler would call it a navicomputer. Could've just left it at NAVI, or just SYSTEM, or just left the name out altogether.
I don't think any franchise has an actor who has been as good and faithful an ambassador as Mark Hamill has been for Star Wars for the last 40 some years.
Perfect way of ending this video lol also, Mark Hamill should be writing these new episodes. Dude is a real Star Wars fan and he does understand what it's all about (and in terms of dialogue, even more than Lucas). I miss the times when dialogue was the problem.
That last Mark Hamil clip is taken completely out of context. They even spliced it to have different meaning. He was not complaining about the writing.

Wow. All of the bits in this short film is epic. It is especially lovely for me to have a couple of very British and very eloquent answers to these... Really all of these are the best. And what Mark Hamill said at the finale about the legendary Prequel Trilogy is absolutely right!!!!!!!
Good director listens to actors and recognizes that its their film as well. I wish more directors would take George Lucas's approach and listen to the actors. (although its kind of sad that they actually had to fight for it) And good actors also care enough to speak up when they encounter stuff like that. Star wars wouldn't have been such a great film series without both.
To be fair, as terrible as that line was, Mark Hamill was able to make it fly.

But the thing is that he didn't do that with American Graffiti. Not that I remember, anyway... I suppose writing a believable space melodrama is more difficult than writing about the 1960s rock and roll/Friday night cruising culture.

The problem with Mark's line is it's very much a military line. It could have been said by a Rebel officer or even Luke in Empire after some years of military service but it doesn't fit Luke the lost farm boy of A New Hope.

I think its cause in george's original intro we got to see him and biggs darklighter talking like that in secret at toschi station but his friends scenes were all cut out. Leaving the viewer thinking lukes nothing but a farmhand rather than a secret rebel fighterpilot more like poe.

They had a plan to join the imperial navy flightschool and steal a couple of fighters. Biggs had been training luke in secret. Its why luke gets so upset with han when he mocks him being a pilot. I think the story feels right without the needless backstory. I just wish they found a way to keep luke seeing the stardestroyers in orbit. Cause it was a really cool effect.

And the main reason that I love Ewan McGregor's young Obi-Wan is that Ewan was almost a Rhoades scholar in all things Sir Alec (may he rest in peace, what a lovely British gentleman he was)/Original Trilogy Obi-Wan. So much so that a rewatch of the prequels, then 1977 Star Wars and seeing Old Ben for the first time made me cry. Why? Because Ewan NAILED his performance in all three prequels.

Late reply, but it actually makes more sense in this context. He's a farm boy with barely any experience. His only training and most profound learning experience is with Obi-Wan, which is still fresh in his mind. You'd expect him to mirror and regurgitate things that sound exactly like him.
Still, the rest of it is silly. Rattling a bunch of military strategy at that stage in his life makes no sense.

There is a huge list of actors at his age and even younger that have cemented themselves at early ages. His delivery sucked. They had to stop shooting numerous times because his delivery was off. If it was fine then they would have just rolled with it. Go take your butt over to that side of UA-cam and watch how much issue they had even in filming with him.

The actors only had the balls to fix the dialogue because it wasn’t the STAR WARS we all know yet. It was just a space film, and therefore no one had the respect for the project that actors nowadays must feel towards it. The original trilogy was really lightening in a bottle. A real group effort that made it what it was. It wasn’t just Lucas, and it shows.
No you are wrong. All movies are 'group-efforts' at the end of the day. But in the case of SW the whole project was steered by Lucas who was a genius filmmaker, editor, anthropologist, cartoonist (he drew the initial concept sketches for Ian Mcquarrie to develop into the concept art) & story-teller. So the kudos ultimately belongs to him.

Both SW and AG were financed by 20th Century Fox/ Universal for the distribution rights. But the films themselves were the intellectual property of Lucas. And Lucas was never part of the 'Industry'. So he was always a rebel film maker doing things his way and not by 'committee'. Just look at the Studio controlled ST. Those horrible movies are basically show-pieces for Social Justice, Political Correctness & Woke politics. So to re-iterate Lucas is the true rebel (a very rich & successful one). It seems that it is some of the SW fans who have leaned towards the 'Industry's' way of thinking :)

I've always wondered why the script for the prequels was so bad when it was so good for most of the originals, and it turns out it was actually just as bad all along. This explains a lot because all 6 movies had conceptually fantastic storytelling (possible exception of phantom), but what really separated the prequels from the originals was the dialogue, and it turns out that just describes George's skillset as a director.

It's all about leverage. Lucas was an up an coming director and had not yet developed his full ego. Alec Guinness was older and respected in the industry, so he could say anything he wanted. Harrison and George were friends and around the same age so they could have those conversations. Mark was pretty ballsy and had the least leverage, but Star Wars wasn't guaranteed to be anything at that time. When the prequels were made, Lucas was a billionaire with tons of power and a big ego. Hayden Christiansen had no power to do anything and had to be a yes man to George. I can imagine maybe Liam Neeson was the only cast member with the clout to stand up to George if he wanted to.
He also had a ton of help with the script for the original movie. A lot of his worst ideas later got refused in the prequels. Such as the slave trader.
That’s not really true people did question him when making the prequels one of the people who helped him make the prequels laughed at the idea of not questioning him

If he had someone to push back on some of the clunkier dialog, or get him to question some of his ideas, the prequels would have been as good as the original trilogy. Lucas can do great things, but he NEEDS collaborators, not 'yes men'.

He even became irritable when his ex-wife used to give him constructive criticism and advice when he was writing the rough draft for ANH. For example, originally he had the Death Star just sitting there in space just waiting to be attacked, that is until she suggested that it should be orbiting the planet, hence creating tension and drama. But once she'd left and he did the ROTJ Death Star battle, guess what? Yep, he had it just sitting there waiting to be blown up, just as he originally wanted!

I think Lucas' severe lack of social skills is reflected in the kind of dialogue he writes. Surrounding himself with yes men/women after 1983 didn't help either.
That's not true as George had consulted many other filmmakers about the writing within the prequels (Steven Spielberg, Tom Stoppard etc) and most of them could not be described as "yes men".

Murder By Death is such an underrated movie. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to see more of Star Wars era Alec Guinness. He handles the comedic aspects surprisingly well

I had an excellent teacher in high school who taught me creative writing. The advice I was given was that you need to talk what you’re writing as you’re writing it and you will find out right away if the sentence sounds natural spontaneous flowing and something that a human being would actually say. I never forgot that. Needless to say I always got excellent grades in any writing assignment I ever did
Boo ya. You had a great teacher. The excellent English style guide, Fowler's Guide to Modern English Usage, written back in the 1920s, says the same thing. It's a brilliant book, not just for writing but for thinking clearly. And Fowler says every writer should read their writing aloud, to assess the flow of the written word, the peaks and troughs, the inflections, and how the grammar and punctuation works in aid of that.
Honestly, it's free online, give it a read. It's a bit archaic at times but the part about reading your own writing aloud, is significant and important. Clear writing sounds clear when read aloud. Unclear writing sounds clunky and obtuse.
You had a very good English teacher. But honestly if you write, check out Fowler's. I can find a link to the section on reading aloud for you if you like. It is well worth reading.

The original editor was fired by Lucas since this cut was done without his input. The editor, I forgot the name sadly, was hired by fox because they got cold feet and had to present a cut for the board of directors at the studio. Sadly he didn't understand what Lucas was going for, plus Lucas wasn't done shooting the VFX shots at ILM and there was no music yet.

His wife Marcia only edited a third of the movie and left to work on another movie before the final edit was even completed. There were two other editors who edited the other 2/3 of the movie. The notion that Lucas had nothing to do with the editing of the original movie, that he's a terrible editor, or that his wife singlehandedly saved from the movie from him--it's all a myth.

The last part where Mark talks about Jake Lloyd... Man, his story is heartbreaking. Imagine being a 9/10-year-old kid, landing the role of a lifetime, and having a bunch of grown adults blame YOU and say horrific things about you for something that was well beyond your control... No doubt that played a MAJOR part in the downward trajectory in his life.
I wish there was more details on what exactly was said to Lloyd. All I’ve ever heard him say directly was “Other kids would make lightsaber noises while I was around them.” I heard the exact same thing whenever I wore a Star Wars shirt to school or had to put up with the 60’s Batman theme whenever I wore my Batman shirt. You’re always going to be getting unwanted attention when you put yourself out there like that. I always rationalize that Lloyd more than likely heard every complaint and criticism I read and heard about him over the years. I was around the same age as Anakin was in Episode I and the line “All my life” made me instantly hate him for the precocious way it came across.
George is wonderful at creating worlds, things concepts and characters. He sometimes might have problems with sharing them with us, but I just feel bad for him for all the hate his dialogues got.
Man just shared with us his love and hard work and we just criticize him. Kinda sad although I'm not saying it's not justified.
Or he could've just let us have the option of which version to buy, thereby negating all the hate he got.

Michael Price there’s another line from the prequels that bothers me.
When Obi Wan stumbles upon the separatists in episode 2 and hears Dooku and the separatists talking about not wanting to sign a treaty until they have Amidala’s head on their desk. One of the other separatists just randomly interjects with the phrase: “With these new battle droids we’ve created for you, you’ll have the finest army in the galaxy.”
There was nothing in the conversation that lead up to that line. It was just so out of left field and out of place that it just makes me cringe every time I watch that scene. It has Lucas’s dialogue skills written all over it. lol

Michael Price He is great at world building, but isn’t that great at dialogue imo. Maybe if someone else wrote the script to the prequels, with him still coming up with the story, and he just directed them they could have been better.

As cringy as Anakin's dialogue there at the end was, if you view it as an awkward teenager raised by monks attempting to be flirtatious, it kind of makes sense.
Yeah and with even a little chemistry between the actors and without the creepy almost licking his lips as he watches his childhood crush who is clearly not that into him it might’ve come off that way, but it’s just icky! Like sheltered and shy is one thing basement dwelling stalker vibe is another...

Hey, your right, Anakin didn't know how to flert, it was his first time trying to convey himself to Padme, She's the only other person who shows Anakin kindness besides his mum and Obi-Wan, and it's why it makes Anakins turn to the darkside that much more emotional despite the dialogue in these films, George is still able to show viewers what these characters have been through, and I love it.
Mark hasnt changed a bit. Wicked to see him do his thing with the audience and his incredible story telling so early in his career.
Hamill was 100% right. That line was horrendous. George looks kind of uncomfortable as a result

The whole world owes Jake Lloyd an apology. All of us. The whole damn world. What happened to him wasn't fair, and we either went along with it, or didn't do anything about it. I mean, I could have sent him fan mail in postage just saying "thank you for your performance :)" or something short, postage isn't expensive, and some encouragement would be nice.
The film industry is brutal. Its an ocean of sharks, and to receive the kind of hate he got from everyone else outside it was cruelty on top of it all.

Alec Guinness mentioning Murder By Death was cool. That's an incredibly underrated film.
Its so sad that by the time the prequels rolled around the actors couldn't tell George no. He wasn't just another director, he was a legend. He needed people who would tell him no, its so sad that because of either hubris or circumstance he didn't have that.
No one in the cast & crew ever told George 'No' in the production of any of the SW films (both OT and PT). This video posted by Cinema Sources about the cast 'changing the dialogue' in the OT is a complete myth lapped up by the SW-Haters

I don't know how big of a deal George Lucas was at that time but he certainly wasn't the creator of STAR WARS at that time (clout wise that is, from what I've heard there, people didn't expect a success).

Honestly this is fantastic, they all look like they have so much fun together.
Mark Hamill and Charles Martinet are two guys who just love the character that they play. It’s always confused me how they never seem to get tired of talking about their character or being excited to talk about their experiences with the character. But its always nice seeing them so happy.
They both know they would probably be nobodies if not for their iconic characters. Also, voice actors tend to be more humble and relaxed then their traditional counterparts, and their work is more fun, easier, and more relaxing as well.
I can listen to Alec G talk all day. Glad to hear he got PaiD! got that percentage.

George Lucas is a conceptualist and a visual artist. He's not necessarily a writer of dialogue, but that is perhaps his only shortcoming. He is a very good director when motivated and (he also dreamed up "Indiana Jones" with Spielberg) and he is a pioneer in technical aspects of movie making.
George Lucas doesn't need to hang his head because a bunch of internet nerds didn't have all of their expectations come true.

So true! Despite his genius, Lucas always did have some bad instincts. He benefitted by having people around him who would question him, make suggestions, and help with the writing and directing (his weakest points). This was clear from other projects, like Indiana Jones, where Spielberg had to step in and say "bad idea!" and keep things on track.
The prequels are what you get when nobody is there to reign Lucas in.

While Lucas had people around polishing his vision for 4.5.6 and apparently no one like that for 1.2.3, 7.8.9 feels to me like lots of ideas with no one in charge of setting a creative course, instead opting to copy from the older ones what they could.
@@deildegast The copying was mostly in episode 7, because they wanted to play it save and copying stuff is what Abrams does, but I was okay with that. Then it became a clusterfuck with no unifying vision.
I don't know how much input Alec Guinness had on his dialogue, but however much he changed it, it worked. His dialogue, and his delivery, was some of the best in the original trilogy, delivered with a wisdom and gravitas that only an actor of his experience can achieve.
It's also telling Lucas lines only work with a really good actor telling them, like Guinness or McGregor.
If it wasn’t for Star Wars my generation might never have known who Alec Guinness was. That would have been a tragedy. Although Star Wars wasn’t his beat work it inspired a lot of younger fans to watch some of his older stuff and appreciate it. Great actor.
I always felt that Lucas wanted Alec because of the work he did in "Lawrence of Arabia", his character there is very much like Obi Wan.
The lesson to learn is: heart is more important than technical mastery.

Yeah, the dialog and decision to have Jedi speak so robotically was his biggest mistake. Other than that, I prefer the prequels to the current movies. Oh and that awful younglings mess.

The sad thing is that Mark Hamill tried to give ideas to J.J. during the pre-production of The Force Awakens AND to Rian Johnson during The Last Jedi ... the former of which, as Hamill said, "was accommodating, but basically gave me a pat on the head and told me to go away", and the latter is an egotistical little manchild who wanted things his way - which was fundamentally and retroactively destroying Luke Skywalker as a character.
Mark Hamill looks so depressed in TLJ interviews - such a fun-loving guy who got to play one of the most recognized and beloved heroes in sci-fi was then forced to play "Jake Skywalker", the most miserable loser in the galaxy. :(

Actually he didn't. Look at the video again. Lucas said he filmed Hamill saying that infamous line but had to cut the whole scene out due to timing issues. In fact no-one (Guiness or Ford) got Lucas to change the dialogue in ANH. He had total control over everything in SW (as both director & executive producer)

In the audition clip, the line actually doesn't sound that bad. Plus, Mark even admits intellectually every part of that line makes sense and gives information. If they smoothed out a couple words I still think that line could've worked. Goodness knows they kept similar lines in ANH anyways (both Luke and Han say a lot of densely-packed lines), so it's not like it was going to be out of place.

A great example of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts. Alec was a stroke of genius as well...myself an aging man at this point, I find his presence in scenes enriching to them in ways that are difficult to articulate. While the later films didn't really recapture whatever that spark was for the kid in me, watching good hearted discussions about just what a phenomenon this was feeds that childlike wonder. Thanks Cinema! :-)

"it will take a few moments for the navicomputer" is actually a good and necessary line. Its building tension because theyre being chased and it explains why they cant just instantly go into hyperspace especially since they couldnt really make a very good visual representation of the navicomputer working given the visual limits though the delivery is awkward. Would be better as "just gotta wait for the navicomputer" just short and simple remember hes a space smuggler a good pilot yes but not someone who will speak grammatically correct

Exactly, a smuggler and pilot would have clipped words to efficiency not blown out sentences like he's a Rhode Island scholar.
Also, not every piece of highly sophisticated equipment needs to always be called by it's assigned name. I highly doubt that a gunslinger-ish smuggler would call it a navicomputer. Could've just left it at NAVI, or just SYSTEM, or just left the name out altogether.
The dialogue might've been better if George had added more Maclunkeys.

I don't think any franchise has an actor who has been as good and faithful an ambassador as Mark Hamill has been for Star Wars for the last 40 some years.
Perfect way of ending this video lol also, Mark Hamill should be writing these new episodes. Dude is a real Star Wars fan and he does understand what it's all about (and in terms of dialogue, even more than Lucas). I miss the times when dialogue was the problem.

Good director listens to actors and recognizes that its their film as well. I wish more directors would take George Lucas's approach and listen to the actors. (although its kind of sad that they actually had to fight for it) And good actors also care enough to speak up when they encounter stuff like that. Star wars wouldn't have been such a great film series without both.
