Guys, this is the weirdest social phenomenon on the internet, an entire set of UA-cam commenters that are not negative, bigoted and trolling. Look at how positive you all are. It kind of backs up the aspect of the film that posited that Jiu-Jitsu communities are brotherhoods and that Jiu-Jitsu changes your life and thinking for the better. All you guys who roll, or take a special interest in Jiu-Jitsu are clearly different thinkers. I think you just broke the internet!
+JudahOwen Oss!!
Oooooooooooossssss
JudahOwen idk. Jiu jitsu community's great when you're on a video about jiu jitsu being great
But if you see the jiu jitsu community on other martial arts videos... Damn are they unfriendly, not a very good representation of what jiu jitsu is
JudahOwen that’s because if you’ve every done BJJ that first session you get humbled not matter who you are. You have your ego checked. BJJ for life
Nathan Gillespie that's not necessarily true. You could he in a gym which is fairly new and mainly has whitebelts, and if youmre athletically gifted ehough you can start with an edge. Or maybe you had solo coaching by a family member (like Kron or the other Gracie brothers). You see many BJJ guys who are far from being humbled. They're sore losers, they impolite and arrogant. It isn't common, but it's hardly rare. And it stems from the relaxed atmosphere in gyms where if you want to delude yourself into thinking you're superior it's easy to do whereas in a traditional art you must lower yourself against all opponents no matter what and if you don't then the instructor won't be happy and if it's in competition you could even get penalised for it.
Not saying the relaxed atmosphere is bad. Most people are fine with it. But when you don't have to acknowledge your superiors as such then you are allowed to put yourself on their level.
Me for example having come from judo i had a hige advantage over many of the people at my gym, and if judo had been as relaxed and informal as BJJ i coudl've easily convinced myself mthese guys are pussies. I'm da best'. Even if you learn to be humble with people in your gym, that doesn't necessarily translate to being humble with everyone else.
The Gracies know their place in the family.mthey know and respect each other. But what happens when they lose (or even win) against most of their opponents? They stamp on them, refuse to shake their hands, even physically attack some of them. And it is because BJJ hopes that you learn humility, whereas judo teaches it to you. This is do, the thing that separated ju-do from ju-jutsu. In ju jutsu (and jiu jitsu) you may learn to be humble along with your strength, but it not gauranteed. Whereas arrogance and strength are mutually exclusive in judo.
This is one of the reasons i'm fine with calling jiu jitsu 'jiu jitsu' and not 'jiu do' because 'do' is not apparent in its curriculum because its 'founders' did not bother to learn or understand the do
Talking about confidence... my little boy was training about 2yrs at the time and had competed; he was about 9 when my daughter told me he has been bullied. I asked what happened and he said a kid had called out "Joey's a midget" (because he is the shortest in his class) and so I asked him, "What did you do?"... he replied, "Nothing, that guy's an idiot." That's confidence, and the type I never had. I love how in control and confident he is.
+Joe Iacovino Awesome!
+Joe Iacovino Great story! Thank you for sharing that.
Joe Iacovino Isn't it awesome?! Our daughter is nine now but when she was six (had been training for two years) someone tried to bully her. She didn't even realize it because she wasn't intimidated (she was the shortest in her class). She was just complaining about how annoying this girl was. The girl was completely trying to bully her and two other girls and it wasn't working on our daughter. I asked her if she was scared or nervous about going to school and she looked at me like I was crazy and asked, "Why would I be scared? I do Jiu-Jitsu!" 18 months later two boys tried to bully her and some other kids and she took care of it in a non-physical way immediately. It has been the best investment into our daughters.
How about he choked the bloody crap out of him.
Lucky dad, you must be super proud of your boy, amazing kid!
I got injured a year and a half ago. Today I 'm not 100% and I don't think I will ever be. A few days ago I started thinking about coming back. I sent Harley Flanagan a message about it. He told me that "life was fucking short. Ease into it, you will be fine" Today I took my Gi out of my closet. Wish me luck.
Good luck! Hope it goes well!
Do it, bro! Enjoy the journey!
+Francisco Feest Awesome, hope it goes well for you!
Do it brother. It's good for the soul!
Enjoy this new chapter, brother.
7000 hours of mat time, 5 surgeries, 3 fights in the cage, 2 on the street, in 20 years time, just to get to brown belt under Royce. And i just turned 55. Never ever quit any goddamn thing!
+john lammons Oss!
How do you know how many hours you have on the mat? lol
@@FernandaTorresss I personally use an app on my phone and document all my mat time and techniques taught during class. App I use is called marune on Android.
Inspirational bro..
Elite31Bravo did that app exist 20 years ago?
Great film, I've just started in Jan 2021 at the age of 53, I have to say I'm having a ball even though it's hard. The people I train with are becoming great friends and push me with encouragement when I don't think I have any energy left to give. I just wish I had started to learn Jiu-Jitsu earlier in life. I also train in Karate which has been part of my life for a very long time. But I have to agree the bonds you build with people you train with in Jiu-Jitsu are very much stronger. One thing I really love is that when you learn a new technique and see how it works, even when you on the receiving end, is how it makes you smile and giggle?
Update!
@@WestHamParker8 Still having a ball and enjoying the comradery, I've even started to post some of my rolling sessions here. I'm the older slower guy :)
Keep at it brotha, jui jitsu is a hell of a drug.
Truly magnificent. I am a white belt with 4 stripes and Jiu Jitsu had completely changed my life. To the way I eat, workout, I am more confidence, I am more understanding to people. Jiu Jitsu is amazing. I am 38 years old and I have just started living.
+Jiu Jitsu Dragon Thanks for watching!
Are you still training bro?
Yo, I started training 6 years ago. If you’re still training we probably have around the same exact start time. What’s the status now man?
I feel you bro, just started my journey at 22 and it’s incredible how alive I feel.
I hope your still training brother !
I started Jiu Jitsu at around 52. I didn’t do it for self defense. I have never worried about being attacked (never thought of myself as someone who would get attacked ) - I started because it looked interesting. About 5 months before turning 60 I received my Brown belt. Unless there is no class or I’m recovering from an injury or can’t get away from work in time for class I have made it a point to get to BJJ class. There have been many nights when I have not wanted to go because of self doubt. My Coach can tell when I am tentative about being in class (because depressed etc)- won’t let me 2nd guess myself - at end of class asks ´aren‘t you glad you came to class?‘ - the answer is always yes. So until I might one day get my Black belt and days beyond I am reminded of how fortunate I am that I roll -
My 12 yr old daughter has been in jiu jitsu for almost 6 months now and I couldn't be more proud of her. She was was brought to tears after she came off the mat for the 1st time because she loved it so much. We watched this together and it made her love for the sport even stronger. Thank you so much for this. JIU JITSU FOR LIFE!

I watch this video once every few months, or really whenever I'm feeling frustrated with training, and it always makes me feel so much better
thank you for saying blue belts quit because life happens. That was the most respectful treatment I've heard someone give to blue belts. it just is what it is.
+Breton Lynn So why do white belts quit?
+Robin MX blue belts
+Breton Lynn hey Bubbles, which part was this mentioned? I'm currently a blue belt and I'm really committed to this lifestyle but I'm afraid of life getting in the way
+themoolag it's was pretty early in the video. I should have time stamped it. for me, it came down to money, time, and risk of injury. I run my own business, and I can't really afford to get injured and put my family at risk. I trained for 8 years, but finally had to weigh the risks vs my stage in life, my responsibilities, and my priorities. in my heart I'm still a grappler, I miss it and my training buddies immensely
my own personal advice for not stopping because life happens is to have a job that won't be impacted by an injury, or will still pay your salary while you are injured. Have great insurance. keep your other hobbies at a minimum or just abandon the altogether
This is great! I love seeing the older gentlemen training at 70+ yrs. I can only I hop I will be there someday at that age. I started at 31 im now 41 and its the best thing I have ever found in my life. Oss
Oss thanks bro. Good luck with your training
what belt are you? :D I haven't started yet.
+im going on holiday to Vietnam i think he is black or brown
im going on holiday to Vietnam , Have you started yet?
The older purple belt that was at valente brothers in the beginning just got his black belt last night.
I’ve been training in various martial arts since 1999. TKD, Muay Thai, boxing, wrestling, Judo, and BJJ. Lots of BJJ tournaments and a couple amateur MMA fights. Of everything I’ve touched nothing comes close to BJJ.
I train at a Team Joe Moreira academy under Professor Richard Raciti. Professor Moreira flew in from Cali 3 years ago for a seminar and to my great honor awarded me my Purple Belt.
My professor asked if I would drive Moreira to the airport. Ahhh YES!! I had the distinct honor of sitting in my car with a Coral Belt BJJ God.
Of all the things I remember this sticks out the most. At one point while driving he said to me. Of all the things the Jiu Jits will teach you; it will teach you to be a better man, husband, and father. He could not have spoken more truth than that.
I’m getting close to my brown belt now and every day I remember what Professor Moreira told me.
My friends, we are living through some dark and troubling times. Jiu Jitsu remains my rock and my light. We are a global family. Men and woman of honor, wisdom, strength and humility. Never forget who you are or your lineage. Never stop fighting. Never quit. When you hit that wall in life or training, hit back and keep at it. Don’t let those voices of doubt EVER fool you. You are a warrior! Know that always.
I draw strength from all of you and wish all the blessings of BJJ to you and your families!! OSSS!

A true master piece.
+Valente BrothersTV Thanks guys! Glad you enjoyed it
Before I started jiu jitsu I was a hot head. I had a lot of pent up anger and somewhat of an inferiority complex. Jiu Jitsu taught me to let trivialities go. It focuses on what is essential, my temprament has cooled off so much. It's cliche to say it's a life saver - but it's said so often that there must be some truth in the statement.
I fell asleep and I just woke up to this video playing so I decided to watch the rest of it
Thank you so much for this!
BJJ has been apart of my life for 20 years. I have given it to my son...its my best gift to him.
Seeing this documentary just let's me know how powerful BJJ is and the effect it has on lives. It's beautiful and deadly all at the same time.

I would love for this director / production team to consider doing a doc on the relationship that the BJJ community has with UAE and Abu Dhabi.
Wow, the most impressive thing in this film is Chris Haueter's black belt.
It wore out into a white color as a sign of time and energy he poured into Jiujitsu.
Man, it's so touching.
Watching the full length of ads just to support this gift. Ive watched this and roll socal about 10 times each. During my 8 month injury this has kept me motivated on recovery. I cant wait to get back!!!

Thank you for the kind words. Give it a try, you'll love it!
Eat Films your welcome. And I'll give it a try. Looks and sounds amazing!
I've had about 15 operations, mostly related to Crohn's disease. 5 of those surgeries were for a hospital-borne staph infection in my femur at the knee joint. I'm 33 and have a permanent medical device (ostomy) on my abdomen and limited knee/hip/hamstring mobility because of scar tissue. Daily yoga is helping that though. I didn't think I'd ever be able to do BJJ with an ostomy, but I got a protective belt for my device, said screw it, and I've been training BJJ now for about 3 months -- I submitted my first opponent this week. It was his 3rd class, and I exhausted him in side control before mounting him and getting the kimura. It showed me what was possible. I'm on "the path" now and I don't see it changing.
You have no idea how much i needed this. I watched this video this morning and it inspired me to get back in and train again.I had my first training session today after months of not training. The best feeling ever afterwards, i feel alive again. Thank you so much. OSS!
+Gino Duarte Thats awesome to hear and makes it worthwhile, hopefully the film can help to get people into jiu-jitsu.
Love hearing from Renzo. He always has great stories to pass on. I also enjoyed the fact that this documentary gave time to some accomplished women in BJJ. I enjoyed their views on female empowerment, friendship in BJJ, and the familial aspects of joining a club/community. Great Documentary!
+Jacob Foster Thanks for watching :)
Jiu-Jitsu is love, Jiu-Jitsu is life. I have only been training for 3 weeks BJJ, and I feel that I need to think about BJJ ever day because it makes me happy. I cant get enough of it and I am looking forward to the journey and learning new things. I used to do Shotokan Karate 10 years ago and I have a blue belt from there, but I like BJJ better not just because it is super effective.. But the people is different, the way of training is different, I feel side benefits from it I never felt from Karate. I think it is a great martial art and I wanna roll with it until the day I pass away.

This is a beautiful thing and it really conveys what jiu jitsu is to the people who dedicate themselves to it.
I just wish there was a shorter version this because it's as long as a feature film and someone who doesn't know what Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is won't want to sit down for 90+ minutes and watch something they consider to be karate or men rolling around on the floor.
I've watched this thing twice and it's definitely for a bjj person, not someone who is a neophyte.
I think if the creators could edit it down to 10-15 minutes and really focus on the high points where women, children the elderly and the small can all learn something that will teach them a great form of self defense against much bigger people but also show how BJJ betters people's lives by given them critical thinking techniques, cool headedness under pressure and an outlet to help get in shape and get off drugs.
I don't mean to be negative at all. This video just needs to be shorter to show new people about BJJ.
Thanks for the feedback, all taken on board. when I get some spare time ill try put together a short 15 minute version
+Eat Films That would be amazing. I just started BJJ, and I like the film a lot. The "15min" idea would be nice for all my friends and family that don't get it. ;)

It’s been a long time since a great BJJ film. We need one in 2023
22:08 put your seat beltch !
Jujitsu was designed by samurai it was adjusted by Relio Gracie, and many others after him including bravo and danaher. But it wasn’t judo and then the Brazilians changed it to a ground art the teachers of the gracies were contemporaries of the creator of Judo and also happen to be his students on paper but they came with their own family styles ko-ryu the ones that went to Brazil were newaza (ground) specialists they were the original judo clubs best newaza specialists and preferred the ground they never identified themselves with judo, they taught their jujitsu from their family which was handed down from the Japanese samurai. How people honestly believe Brazilians created a art and called it jujitsu in perfect Japanese is kind of strange . How do you ignore that all the original ground manuals for judo have Japanese names for all the original techniques in the Gracie arsenal is hard to comprehend. Yes, without the Brazilians these arts die on the vine because judo became Olympic and did away with the ground aspect as a core focus. Without Brazil,it doesn’t escape Japan but the people who actually died for these arts were the samurai. Someday we need to actually pay homage to these ancients Japanese soldiers for creating these arts which were created in times of centuries of feudal warfare. No samurai no ju-jitsu. It came purely with men trying to murder eachother needing to solve the problem of what happens when I lose my sword. They needed to figure it out because if they didn’t they would die in gruesome circumstances. And the Japanese created a very engineered approach to ending a fight with vicious finality something totally unique in its ability to kill or mame. All props to The samurai, and all the further schools who took in a new direction.
3 months and 1 week in love with the Art. Thanks Jiu Jitsu for showing me the path. This is a love for a lifetime
guy I am you on the future and wanna tell you you will be addicted... Jits 4 life

3 karate dudes gave it thumbs down..great documentary.
+Luis rivera Thanks!
One karate dude gave it thumbs up and asks himself: Why are people always hating on other martial arts? Basically sports where it's about respect each other?
+AthletiQ me too, part of being a martial artist is suppose to be about respect. I have very little jujitsu training but I found the words in the video to hit very close to home for how I felt learning and teaching karate throughout my life. We are all one, we can all learn from each other
Bill tackett
i thought the same thing. But it seems to me, that this mentality is spread wider in the US. Beeing from Germany I can tel it's different, but I think this is because it's very cheap to tak classes over here. You can go for 20 bucks a month or even around 40 and basically train everyday. So maybe it's more effordable to try and adopt different styles.

Another amazing documentary done by you guys at Eat Films. Thank you for this. I seriously don't know how anyone can give this video a thumbs down. Is it too late to place an order for the blu-ray/dvd??
+Scott Fernandez Thanks Scott. It's all good, each to their own. The film aims to spread a positive message and hopefully its achieved that for the most part. Yes sure you can order at www.eat-films.com/store Thanks for the support

+Luis Cruz Thanks for watching!
rename this: Jiu-Jitsu saves the world!
start to finish a master piece!
+Paul Bishop Thanks!
Renzo Gracie is always should be in any documentaries about jiu jitsu, but I think this video missing Mendes bros, Galvao , Buchecha, Keenan, Rodolfo, and other top players
+mrrustem male its not easy to go and find all of them.. anyway if you are in California I guess you can find almost all of them...
It was also nice to hear white belts and not just black belts..
Of course its nice to hear from everyone , but I think if they would do fund raising for second part a lot of people will donate because its always great to hear stories from world top bjj athletes
Really excellent work!!! What a fantastic tribute to our evolving sport.
Was great, been looking forward to this for a while. Oss!
+Squints378 Thanks
