  • Dr Jasleen K Jolly, from the Vision and Eye Research Institute at Anglia Ruskin University, joins us for this My Macular and Me webinar to discuss her latest research on Charles Bonnet syndrome.
The research has been split into two studies, the first uses an MRI to observe the activity levels of neurotransmitters in people with CBS compared with people without. The second study has called for participants with frequent hallucinations to undergo an electroencephalogram (EEG) to see how brain activity changes before, during and after a hallucination.
Our understanding of CBS is still extremely limited, but the objective of this research is to widen what we know about the condition and to spread awareness.

After a traumatic wound at the macula of my right eye at age 10, I met with the CBS , already trained on painting & sketching.
CBS actually has made my life much enjoyable; it actually much improved my painting, and alleviate the slow & invalidating period of vision loss on my remaining eye, extending from age 70 to age 77.
In two months I’m scheduled for cristalline replacement surgery on that eye.
I’ll end by signaling some probable occurrences of the CBS in the Arts:
    In painting:
    - Pieter Breughel, the Elder
    - Hieronymus Bosh
    - Paul Gauguin
    - Pierre Bonnard (his period post 1905)
    - Otto Dix
    In literature:
    - James Joyce
    - Dorothy L Sayers
    - Jorge Luis Borges

My mom sees people all over the house! Coming in through the windows and walls! Very scary for her! Horrible situation that scares her! She has glaucoma and has lost all vision in the right eye and losing vision in the left

It is really quite scary. I ended up with central serous retinopathy and I was only in my early fifties. However, I thought I had a spider on my shoulder and I was jumping about, going nuts as I cannot stand them. I saw tem on the walls, running across the floor and I found out it was ALL in my head, a trick my brain played on me because of my visual deficits. Horrendous

I see town street plans, but like you not clear enough to read. They appear supermposed on my TV screen on plain parts of the screen - sometimes the whole screen.

You have not mentioned permanent CBS. Mine is in the form of a net like image in line form only. Small like a net that covers everything I look at. I have macula disease in both eyes. My right iris does not respond to light test. My iris doed not move. Maybe my optical nerve is involved in this. I have had a brain MRI and am waiting for the result. My net problem is very thin, like cobweb and it remains very sharp even when I remove my glasses. This I think, proves it is not from the eye but from the brain. If I look at a wall very close to me, the very fine tiny polygons are very small. If I look at a distant blank wall the polygons become very large, jndicating the eyes are effecting the CBS. I did try to help both the oxford and cambridge study but was too late.

Hi George, I'm so sorry to hear that your CBS affects you this badly and that you were unable to take part in the Oxford or Cambridge studies . Hopefully you will be able to get involved in future research. If you ever need any advice or support, please do get in touch with our helpline. We are available 9am - 5pm (Monday to Friday), 0300 3030 111.
