One of my most enjoying hallucinations yet so far was just last night. I don’t know if my Engineering background makes me susceptible to these very technological process hallucinations buts it wonderful! What started out as two very complex gearing mechanisms with bio mechanical devices that seemed to open up and swallow other bits and pieces to create additional energy I suppose. But then these gears morfed into extra large Space machines that multipled and eventually turned into something out of Star Wars! Another thing I quickly learned is the low light of the Hospital room associated with the small tiny blue, red and yellow LED lights on the hospital monitoring equipment has added fantastic special effects in my hallucinations! The blue tends to always be used as backlighting the ships whereas the red & yellow seem to twinkle and add such dimension to these incredibly detailed stories my mind is creating! It’s making for some interesting late night movie watching in a room with no TV in it and the entire 3 walls are my TV Screen!

Thank you for your very informative information on CBS. I believe I do have it. I am concerned about informing my Doctor. My general practitioner said not to worry as many older people have this syndrome, but didn’t have any other information regarding this. My eye doctor has never mentioned it. Shouldn’t an ophthalmologist inform their patients of this syndrome so if they did happen to get it or have it, they wouldn’t be so frightened. I have had a couple of episodes where I screamed in fright. This syndrome really needs to be published in medical journals to inform doctors so they can help their patients when needed.

Hi Barbara, we completely agree. There is a lack of awareness about the condition, including among medical professionals. We continue to work closely with health professionals to raise awareness. You may be aware that there is also a storyline running currently on ITV's Coronation Street about CBS, which will help spread the message further.

Don't often see a mention of CBS caused by brain damage, which i believe is what i get. My eyes aren't too bad, except pretty extreme myopia, I've just had massive damage to the part of my brain that should be processing the rightt side of my visual field. My hallucinations are pretty boring, mainly just dogs and cats, nothing distressing. Most recent one was a reflective surface, a bit like a mobile phone. I could see a reflection of my arm in it, the reflected arm had a tattoo which i don't actually have. I probably only get them every couple of weeks now, would quite like to get some more exotic ones.

Thank you for the very good presentation and Q&A. I only have very positive CBS experiences, so its interesting to see the flip side and imagine the consequences.
i understand almost anyone can have a CBS-like experience if denied all light, e.g. visiting a cave where they switch off the lights for a few minutes. I don't recall CBS being mentioned by anyone in my eye care teams, but was already aware of the possibility, and didn't fear it.
But there is a temptation to hope for more of these events of "extreme clarity in vision", and forget the real world! I wonder if this has influenced art, religion, culture, history...
I also find this area useful for understanding our visual comprehension/machine vision, having worked in that field. We see the world collapsed to a plausible model of familiar real-world objects composed from shapes, patterns, textures. movements, contexts. But when the stimuli are fuzzy or missing, perhaps disturbed by illness or drugs. all kinds of alternative models are considered, including injecting missing information, competing to be the most acceptable interpretation. I'm sure it was an evolutionary necessity, and rather wonderful.

Fascinating, I have CBS but don’t know much about it. It’s cool to learn the history.

What's been the craziest thing you have seen. Back when I was young at night I saw kids dancing in a circle in the middle of my bed room. Also army men coming out of the floor then splatting.

It’s interesting how “temporary vision loss” has not been discussed as much. I had cosmetic facial surgery done 4 days ago and my eyes swelled shut for 4 days and I began to present CBS after only first 18 hours. Most of the hallucinations are harmless & quite entertaining, but I’m having a few that are more disturbing such as the disfiguring of faces going through a meat grinder that I don’t particularly find so fun! Is there any idea on how to expect CBS to continue in patients with temporary vision loss? I realize it’s in the very early stages, but I’m having these hallucinations pretty any time I close my eyes! As well, if I watch the hallucinations for any length of time, then they appear after opening my eyes on a blank wall surface for hours at a time! It’s becoming quite annoying!

Is she aware that she is hallucinating? I can't tell if my 81 year old mother has this, or sudden onset dementia. Overnight 5 weeks ago, she started seeing people. We don't have many answers from primary or eye doctors. Mom does not believe it's a hallucination. She believes they are there.
