the best fucking thing about the medicine called Jerry is that it never expires and its potency just grows. Thank you

John Kahn deserves way more love. He GOT Jerry's BOUNCE. Yeah yeah yeah, drugs...whatever. these two hooked up musically and it's undeniable.
John Kahn was a great bass player, I know he gets the blame for the drugs, but Jerry would have gotten them with or without him...
John Kahn’s Bass Playing was more of Straight Bass Lines and Melody of a Song which allowed Jerry to noodle, solo above, below and along with the Melody so well .. Phils style of Bass Playing is almost as if he’s playing guitar as Phil moved up and down the Melody as well as Jerry did in the old days which made both Phil/Jerry play off each other …
John K was a setter of Melody along with the Drums to establish the core rhythm of a Song ..
I believe sone of JG’s best playing was when he was with JK and especially in that ‘74-‘80 Stretch with 4 Piece Band Lineups
This is the equivalent of watching a great actor without special effect or elaborate sets. Just Jerry his guitar and pure genius.
Nobody ever played this song as well as Jerry. Simply Magnificent
Why who else played it
@@helenpotter2657Old and in the Way with Jerry on banjo in acoustic bluegrass style.
The song was written by Tony Rowan. His playing is fabulous also but Jerry is much more up tempo. Both are masteries of bluegrass.
John was a brilliant bassist.
Nothing better than a Jerry show. You don't have to wait for him for every other song :)
But he still plays guitar on every dead song so you don't really have to wait for him . He's a much better guitar player than singer anyway.
I have to say that watching Jerry Garcia enjoy himself while playing harkens back to the times when it seemed he was enjoying himself much more frequently before the Dead became a juggernaut. I remember those days quite fondly. This video is a testament to his energy and joy.
Growing up in Jersey. We Never missed a Jerry show.
I keep coming back to this video. I can't get enough! Young Jerry, the way he pronounces "prayers", the way he rocks back and forth at the end of the monster solo and the strength of the keyboardists neck. Solid version of this timeless song. Thank you for sharing!
He's smiling. You know it's good!
With the Grateful Dead videos and the JGB videos it's interesting to note Jerry's exquisite careful articulate and clear enunciation of the Lyrics.

Branden listen to any Sugaree...”when they bring that “Waygon” round...it’s Cali accent...
excessive Gerry syndrome heart and soul for ever
Great show. I was there.
These JGB shows were some of the best he ever played, and he always seemed so happy and relaxed during these shows. We never get to hear from the guys in this band about their time together.
Great to see Jerry smiling and apparently getting much pleasure from this performance.
This is a beautiful song and in my opinion this show was one of his best. He's clearly happy and his playing is superb. 4 solos on this one! Passaic NJ JGB is my favorite. Jerry is bouncing to the groove and his playing is top notch. The man was a force of nature. Love this song 🎵 ❤️ but the whole 2 shows..early and late are exceptional. This is it man!
He looks so happy. This is my all-time favorite JGB tune.
This never gets old.
if you ever feel lonesome
and youre down in San Antone
beg, steal, or borrow, two nickels or a dime
to call me on the phone...
those lyrics sound so cool and it wont be long before the people listening to this wont have any idea what those lyrics mean... back when payphones cost a dime wow doesnt seem that long ago but its a lifetime...
The first few times that I was in New Orleans, it was still only a nickel to make a payphone call. I'm pretty sure that was the last location in the U.S. for 5¢ payphone calls.
My first time hearing this ever was 2015 . StringCheese was playing it live under a full moon while i rhode the ferris wheel over looking the ocean. I fell in love instantly. Xo
Masterful. Love the phrasing. The exuberance in his voice and guitar.
Dedicated to my great Friend Buzzy. You sent this to me in my time of need. I'm sending it to you. I love you my friend. R.I.P
Great Peter Rowan song, who is not given enough exposure as songwriter and is still around. Jerry in terrific form.
The best Cristian rock band that was! We will miss you Jerome and Robert
Jerry's solo a couple minutes in is one of the best ever for any song
It's fucking amazing.
the chromatiscism of his solo is mesmerizing
Beyond fucking amazing, words dont, wont or cant describe those fingers at times like Midnight
so its not just me, pure bliss!
This is pure Jerry magic, he hits every damn note. Only Jerry playing solo makes me happy nowadays, but sure am happy that there is lot of this magic out there.
I'm astounded this song never made it's way into the Dead's rotation. It fits too perfectly, musically and lyrically.
I don't know, there's not a lot of room behind Jerry for Bobby on this one, it's a straight forward, hard driving song. IMO this is just a perfect canvas for Jerry. Just opinions.
@@MrNvona good point Nick. Cheers
This was perfect for Jerry when he played it with Old and in the Way, you know, bluegrass stuff and David Grisman. Garcia was a monster on banjo. Peter Rowan and Vassar Clemens were members of that group. Great stuff. You are fake Deadheads! Jam on brother...
@@cravinbob John Kahn was also a member of Old and in the Way.
@@MrNvona I can't really imagine Phil Lesh keeping himself as restricted as Kahn is doing here (brilliantly, in my opinion). It would have been a far different song with Lesh playing.
Never Ever gets old …
Besides the 33 years and 43 years of relationships I've had in my life, Jerry is by far on the important side of those relationships. Never let's me down and can always find something for the perfect time. Love you my man.
Ditto for the message ❤love jerry☮️
he's having the time of his life. delightful to see and hear.
That's the was it was-seemingly ALL the time-when it was still tribal. That Garcia could on occasion capture the singularity I found remarkable.
This Jerry solo is monumental... when he was on, he was on
Which was delightfully common
@@GarlTsagan My first show....HE WAS ON!! I rode it out until the end...over 100 shows....still miss him!!
Jerry’s poking those notes is his trying an invasive esoteric combination, again and again, to some cosmic bank-safe to expose to our astonished grasp a bouquet of some eternal flowering happiness.
I certainly hope you are writing songs, very poetic
My dad brought old and in the way into my life and and all bluegrass! I had no idea how cool he was and how cool he made me! Rocky Mountain Bluegrass Festival
I was just thinking about how incredible "Old and In The Way" is!!! GOLDEN...Peter Rowen is related to one of my best friends

Amen.
This comment brought a tear to my eye
Association of Free people shouldnt be free to comment. I dont understand????
they will.
I had to listen to it twice and it blew me away both times. Pure gold!!!!!!!1
Jerry und John Kahn, most wunderbar!!
Getting ready for a 4 am winter run and this comes on. I think I'll just boogie down the trail instead.
The lovely lyrics of this song always bring me to tears.. Tasty JG guitar solos on this version of Midnight Moonlight! I visit this video often it's sooooooo amazing...
Jerry is on fire 🔥
As a long time Elvis fan I'm discovering bands from the past and drummer Ronnie Tutt gave me the Garcia link. Video's like this are an amazing discovery.
Jerry- Guitar
John- bass
Ozzie Ahlers- keys
Johnny DeFrancesca- drums
They’re playing this one at record speed.
Thanks. Other than Jerry, and John Kahn, I wasn't sure of the rest of the lineup. I missed this tour; away at school, unfortunately!
spectacular! what a find! heard this originally as a radio broadcast. jerry's on fire. in peak form.
This is pure bliss ....
🎼”if you ever feel lonesome.. in the moonlight.. in the midnight .. moonlight.. midnight.. if you ever feel sorrow for the things you have done.. and the ocean is howling of the things that may have been.. .. in the moonlight.. in the the midnight .. moonlight.. midnight.. “ ♥️💛💚💙
You messed up the words just a little bit, dear. However, still works good for you
that smile at 0:20 .... he knows how good this is ....
Just plain awesome !
Best recording of midnight moonlight
The Old and in the Way bluegrass version with Jerry on banjo (his original instrument) is a great version too. But here, Jerry's solos are on fire, perhaps self influenced by his years on banjo.
Miss you Jerry
Melissa. This guy worked his butt off. Jerry WORKED. It kinda got to people around him. I work. But there is no way I could keep up with him. ??
Yup, that just made me happy 😁
How the hell do they do this ???? everytime every song its like a depiction of what they knew was to come. Nothing left to do but smile smile smile. 😉🥀🌫️😁😍
Or what was already here and has been and i suppose will continue for now. and possibly forever, if im not mistaken.
At the time of the Capitol Theatre concerts, the members of the Jerry Garcia Band were Jerry Garcia on guitar and vocals, Ozzie Ahlers on keyboards and vocals, John Kahn on bass, and Johnny de Foncesca on drums. At the late show, Robert Hunter sat in with the band on two songs that he wrote.
Tiger Rose and Promintory rider.
Thanks. I wasn't sure of anyone other than Jerry & John!
That was the best place to see a band. Countless concerts at the Capital. Rough neighborhood but well worth it. Never saw Jerry there (had to go down to Asbury for that) but did see the Dead there.
Capitol Theatre - like the building in Washington, DC or the record company named for it!
No words, I miss this jerry! Thank you
Damm! I mean, I mean just DAMN!
haha yup
keep on coming back to this one. jerry on fire but john brings it too. great energy
Brightest I've ever seen
this is one SOLID JGB performance, no backing vocals or any accessory BS, just 4 guys rocking out
8 min of pure genius
what a gem, thank you so much for sharing this!
Hot damn, I LOVE this song 😻😻😻
Still lovin Jerry! Feels like yesterday I was at a show, miss those days so much! Thank you Jerry and boys, for the music of course but also, you really taught me how to live!
And........ Repeat .... And.... Repeat
its 2020 JK....and Im still repeating!
its crazy how much they age in 4 years... from the 9-16-76 ss dutchess video to now, looks like they both aged 10 years... must have been some really good dope
they both = Jerry and John
Being on the road all the time is the baddest dope my friend.
Are you referring to the Pirates Ball? Bo Diddley and Elephant's Memory, N2O tanks, and JGB? Awesome show; awesome day !!! I believe it was September 15, 1976.
@@larrydaiell 9/16/76
@@skgate I've got to check my 🎟 ticket stub! Do you remember what the location, or entrance said? It was Gangway 2 or 4; something like that. We bought the tickets (as soon as they opened) at a Ticketron location. We had no idea 💡 it was on a 🚢 boat!
Love a smiling Jerry
JGB is pure emotion and I've felt them all listening to this amazing astral collaboration
Jer kicks ass on this Peter Rowan tune...don't get no better
Jerry was on Fire!!! that night!!
Nobody jammed those bottom frets like Jerry: not Clapton, not Page, not Beck. No disrespect to them, but Jerry would just put his head down and enter the realm. And share it with us.
Agree, although Jorma comes close.
head n shoulders above those guys.
Trey does
triads! Jerry, Jorma, and Duane will were doing it the 60s and once the 8os hit nobody has since
'and share it with us' ... that's for sure!
Nice, what a great show that was. Jerry was outstanding, just on fire with his playing.
The whole show was just fabulous...
Great!! Beautiful song❤️
This is DANK!
Jerry =happiness
Jerry looks happy
I'm so happy to listen to a very favorite JGB tune 🎶🎧🎶
How can you not smile watching this
Love the Video footage and this version of the song. The band was jamming.
WE KAHN DO IT!!!
Pure bliss indeed ☮️
Love you Jerry!
My Friend John's Fav Jer song +- - RIP John & Jer, just like when we saw him back in the days

I miss this guy
Been a Deadhead since ‘75. I know this is a Peter Rowan song, but, it may be my favorite Garcia tune. 7/9/77, Jerry and the band is just levitating. You can see this huge aura around Jerry’s head. I’m sorry. Totally sober right now. It’s there every time I see the video.
Jerry was having fun!
It seemed he always did when he was on the road with JGB.
Listening to this again just emphasis that this band has more talent then the Dead.
JGB>Dead all day long
John Kahn was absolutely perfect for that band and Jerry knew it. JGB was pure Jerry of course and my opinion but that's why they were often more desirable than the Dead.
My wife isn't really musical but she's enjoying my playing mostly 60's and '70's rock classics. Real classics not garbage.
Thank you Brother ☀️
The Master.
four years ago I was close enough to the Grim Reaper to smell his breath
an old friend called and asked me what i wanted to listen to on my way out
"Jerry Garcia playing a long lead" was my answer
Midnight moonlight. Awesome.
I love how Ozzy fits somewhere between the Gospel/Classical proficiencies of Keith and the Funky vibe of Merl.
Off the charts So unreal
Brilliant ❤
Jerry sounds and looks so much better and healthier here than he did in the Radio city music hall vidoes . His health appearance and voice deteriorated alot in just in 7 months .
Virgin Mother and Holy Ghost help ALL who ask. But you gotta ask. Indeed!!!!
I miss Jerry ✌️❤️⚡️🐢
ty yet again papa bear
this is kick ass!

@@XI_Daisy_XI Your close; it was ergot, or wheat rust. Then again, what we call rye bread is half rye and half wheat. Pure rye makes what we call pumpernickel!
Jerry's the master!
Maybe he played freest with the JGB. Stunning solo! Btw I saw 85 yo Peter Rowan, who wrote the song, play it slow and sweet solo acoustic on stage this summer (2023). A great song of many possible tempos moods and feelings
twas wonderful
