Well I think he's rather quite stark and dark. Personally, it's hard for me to watch depressing cinema because there's plenty of other media and personal matters to get depressing content from. I try to shy away from it but not ignore it all together. I could see how Haneke's movies are easily underappreciated. It's both his style and subject matter that seem hard to take in, at least from the 3-4 movies of his I've seen
I absolutely love how she picked out 3 films within about 30 seconds. I knew right then that I was about to be schooled on cinema. And she didn’t disappoint! Wonderful film choices!
I’m thrilled by her appreciation of Michael Haneke. His cinematic influence, particularly seen in The White Ribbon, is evident in Vermiglio. Easily one of the best films of 2024, I hope it makes its way to the Oscars.
Great picks! Couldn't agree more on Where's My Friend's House. Such a masterpiece of purity and simplicity of form, yet so deceptively profound, amazing how much you can say with so little. Kiarostami is a genius!
Maura Delpero, I have no idea who you are, but as I love “Il posto” above nearly all other Italian movies I now love you and your modest blue dress as well.
Ermanno Olmi developed his career doing his own thing and not paying attention about what would trend in italian cinema. This approach helped cementing his legacy as one of the great Maestri of italian cinema. The average viewer wouldn't probably even know him, but his work, his stories and his love for cinema earned him a rare status among other filmakers, festivals and film lovers all around the world. He is among my favourite directors, you should watch his films if you can. I'm italian, so I'm lucky enough to be able to watch and understand even his lesser known movies, but luckily there are lots of english-friendly releases out there. Scorsese and Al Pacino are big fans of his work
I'm not familiar with her work, but I like her taste. Olmi is a great director and will be missed for his keen insights into the lives of average and struggling people, usually outsiders. I Fidanzati (also known as The Fiances) is amazing, as is The Tree of Wooden Clogs. Glad to see him get some love. Thank you, Ms. Delpero!
I admit I don't know her, she seems very "Euro art house". It's funny she said Il posto was not well known! The Piano and The Piano Teacher is quite the double feature!
LET'S GET REAL: Criterion gives away volumes of movies for free to those within the industry who could easily afford them if they had been really wanting them, which can only contribute to the high cost everyone else pays. The mobile CC however gives the rest of the working class, who can generally much less afford them, a 40% discount with a limit of 3. They took down my last post pointing this out, let's see if the SOB's allow the inconvenient truth here.
You're not completely wrong, but that's the most cynical/pessimistic take. Criterion also promotes film, shares people's passion for it, exposes people to artists and films they don't know, and keeps the DVD/Blu-Ray desire alive so we won't be left with streaming services that would choose what you watch for you.
They are a business. They use this platform to sell their product. Most of the people buying their product are bourgeois, as the product is overpriced and somewhat exclusive. Who the hell buys physical products like dvds or Blu-rays now anyway? I’ll tell you - it’s people who want to display their tastes to visitors, and we know who they are. Meanwhile us peasants just store what we like on our hard drives, and don’t care who knows how niche and spot on our tastes are.
@@Ack359 You have some real anger that is directed in crazy directions. Most people do not stream exclusively, and especially poorer people don't even have access to streaming, or can afford it, they get basic cable if they can. Not everyone has their own laptop or desktops; they will have phones, but if they love films and tv and want to watch on something larger than their phone screens, they get the DVDs and Blu-rays for cheaper than stream services.
@@scottboswell6406 erm I don’t have any anger, just an opinion that you don’t agree with. Haneke has been severely under appreciated the past 10 years

She made a wonderful movie called "Vermiglio".
I don't know Maura Delpero, and I don't know Ermanno Olmi. But she is captivating and I am excited to see her films and those of Olmi. Thank you !

I just saw Fish Tank! Incredible film, and also an early Michael Fassbender performance. So good!
It should have made the last sight and sound poll

One of the greatest filmmakers of the new Italian cinema 🙌🏻
Maura! que bonita. such a great woman. can't wait to see Vermiglio
I could watch & listen to Delpero in the CC closet all day.
i love ermanno olmi's films. i just got "legend of the holy drinker" on blu-ray from arrow.

Maura has amazing voice.
I really love her movie choices including Il Posto and The Piano.
Ah, Vermiglio 🎉
Criterion - These are too short. This isn't Tik Tok! 😁
I will definitely have to watch The Piano.
Great movie!
That's silly! You don't watch the piano, you play it
she's gorgeous! just saw Vermiglio, one of the best films of the year thank you! ps: you single?
The Koker Trilogy is an amazing set of films
❤❤❤❤❤
💜 🎹
I like this.
how tall is that closet?
The closet is self-conscious about its height. I heard it wears platforms.
I liked it when she stepped up on the stool.
Can she just talk? About anything? 🥰🥰
great
I’ll Posto is incredible but I don’t think Criterion have a Blu-ray of it. This is an oversight that must be corrected
MIA MADRE
Where is Salo
Where is Salo? Where is Salo? Won't anybody think of the Salo?!!!! I'm sure a lot of people pass a lean knee over it
@ I like your funny words, magic man
HANEKE!!
she seems to be copying Isabelle Huppert. I see only Isabelle while she is speaking here. I want to see her! She seems french and not italian! :(
A guest didn't pick Blue Velvet. Is something wrong with the channel??!! What's going on??!!
Yeah Lube Velvet is such a classic. A real rite of passage into weird beloved movies
Didn’t pick All That Jazz either…
Just once i’d like to see someone come in and go boom Goodfellas, Silence of the Lambs, Breakfast Club, Rosemary’s Baby lol. GIVE US SOMETHING GOOD 😅
They probably already have these well known movies.

I will guess the next guess...Winchester '73?
She insists upon herself. A lot of these ruling class elites do.
