After many questions and requests concerning this topic, in this video I take a deep dive look, with audio examples, of the proper settings you want to use when utilizing Tonex Pedal (and any other devices) with HX Stomp. There are some very important settings we need to consider when connecting the devices together so that we can be assured that we are getting the best possible tone from both Tonex Pedal and HX Stomp. I don't think the output of the ToneX pedal is "Line" level. I think it is "Instrument". This isn't specifically documented, but I contacted IK support to ask this, and they state that with MAIN VOL in Global settings set to 0dB, output would be at "Instrument" level. So in the HX Stomp global settings, I've set "Send/Return" to "Inst" which seems to produce the most transparent sound.
I'll have to try that. I've been trying to set the return of the loop lower because I do seem to notice that the bass gets weird if I have it in the loop set to instrument. Need to have to time to sit down and really A/B things

Get it. I'm using mine with helix floor and then use it on a pedalboard also. Half of the tones helix other half pedalboard.
Great video. I have an AX8. Unfortunately it only has an effect loop block. I’ve working on it with the Tonex Pedal for a fortnight. FX loop block is set to instrument level going out to the Tonex pedal but I boost the effect level which turns out to be the return level +9db by my ears. That works fine with FX loop without an amp block. I need a separate preset with instrument level FX loop I/O when using Tonex as a drive pedal feeding an amp block though.
Hey Jason, these videos are really helping me getting started with the ToneX. Is there a way to use the ToneX pedal with an Eleven Rack modeler, and be able to control ( Patch ) changes simultaneously with both units? The Eleven Rack has Midi and an effects loop.

I just got my hands on an older Line6 product for my effects, a POD HD500X. Unfortunately I can't split my FX Loop into two types of signal (I have a manual switch before the board), so I will have to live with an instrument input until I change for a more recent model.

If right now I’m using 3 blocks in the HX Stomp (AMP+IR+an FX LOOP with some overdrives) and Tonex Pedal would be my new AMP+CAB, I'd be actually SAVING 1 block hooking up tonex pedal in the stomp using a send L and a return L blocks only! Proper levels, proper impedance, amp models and IRs in the tonex pedal….Sounds good to me 👍👍👍
Great video and thanks for explanation. I've got a Helix LT. I can set each of the 2 pairs as either Instrument or Line from Global settings but I cannot set Send (from Helix) as Instrument and Return (to Helix) as Line i.e. mix... unless I'm missing something.
You can use a send 1 block set to instrument level and a return 2 block set to line. this would be the proper way, but it costs 2 blocks and if you need the fx loop for another device then this would only receive line level (because of setting the loop 2 to line) and would need to send instument (because of the configuration of loop 1), so it could cause problems, depending on your setup
Jason , did you change any settings on the Tonex pedal when using it with the Helix ? When I use mine on the Send1/return2 of my Helix Floor I get a lot of white noise/hiss especially with high gain tones, the Noise gate of the Tonex seem to have no effect, other pedals on my Helix loop works fine
Question... is there a reason you couldn't use the FX loop and then just lower the send parameter in the L6 to instrument level? Or lower the input trim in the Tonex? I'm curious.

Jason, would the Iridium be the same? Iridium can set input as line or instrument level. And can output at different levels as well. Would it be ok to set the stomp fx loop as Line if iridium is set to line I and out? Thx!
Hey Jason can you pls link the Preset how you would set it up with the two blocks ....for instance a template , so that i could opt in to use my favourite pedals. That would be nice ! I got an Hx Stomp XL by the way !
Wouldn't a line level to instrument level converter (e.g. Radial Reamp) deal with this, albeit at some cost?
Thanks, JASON, A lot of people are sending distortion type pedals into the tonex pedal. I would imagine that most likely exceeds instrument level. So it might be a NO,NO. You being a wealth of information on this. Really the only one on UA-cam who IK outta be paying for. I think what people need to understand is that a Tonex pedal is not an amplifier itself, They want to Hit the Front of the Amp a certain way, it is not an actual Guitar Amplifier, it is a Capture holding device. This should be in Paper work that comes with this Product, Or users well might Destroy the Product they have bought. Am I right about this. This was such an informative video, Thank You so much. I have heard the unit comes with almost NO Paperwork. I myself am still watching all this Pan out, before I plunk down GOOD hard earned money on this Product.
My pleasure and thanks for the kind words :-) As far as distortion pedals go, it is fine to send that into Tonex Pedal in the same way we can send a distortion pedal into the input of a real amp. The difference is if we are plugging into a distortion pedal we are trying to drive the amp or in this case Tonex Pedal harder for a particular effect, which is fine. When simply interfacing the Stomp and Tonex Pedal, we want to keep the sound as accurate as possible without alteration.
Hey Jason, can i use a walrus reamp box from the output of tonex to return in as an instrument to hx? Wouldn’t it solve this?
Jason, does HX Effects allow the proper settings you recommend with the ToneX pedal? I can’t see in the manual that you could independently control the send and receive. They look to be tied to either/ or. I think you MAY have covered this in another video but you did reference Stomp/Effects. I just wanted to clarify before I pull the trigger on both items. This is for anyone else coming to the video since your comment is almost a year old at this point
You have to have loop one set to instrument, and loop two set to line. This eats up both of your loops. You can decide if you want to do the hx stomp solution if you don't mind how having everything go into a single loop set to instrument. I'm still deciding what I want to do. I want the second loop, but I think it does sound better having the out of the tonex going into an input set to line.
I'm experimenting with reducing the gain of the second input in the first loop to compensate for the line level going into something set for instrument, and I'm also considering getting a reamp box to change the signal to instrument if that doesn't sound like I want because I do want to have at least one loop for some fuzzes and drives that I think sound better than the ones on the HX FX
I would like to know if the Tonex pedal must be put into an fx loop in the Tonex - Line6 combination?
Is the solution that guitar-Tonex in, Tonex out - Line6 in, Line6 stereo output to mixer is not functional? Several people write the fx loop solution, I'm just trying to understand what the reason might be?

So that's the reason putting effects pedals after the Tonex destroys my tone? Because its output is line level? Are there any ways to use effects after Tonex without using a reamp box? Kinda don't want to have to put a reamp box on my pedalboard.
Do you think it would be possible for Line 6 to implement via firmware update different line/inst lvls separately for send and return of the same loop?
My issue with the Tonex in the FX loop of HX Stomp is that the pick attack seems a little muffled/compressed and that was the same thing I could hear in the test - 6:23.
As a listener I wouldn't care but when I tested it out I felt the difference between just the Tonex vs Tonex in the fx loop of HX Stomp.
Hi Jason, what about latency with hx stomp and tonex? I saw a video that measure both and gave 9ms latency, because of audio conversions. Is it noticeable if you shred? In my experience with vsts i noticed that kind of latency. Do you have more info about this? Thanks and greetings from Argentina
You're not going to notice 9ms unless you're some kind of super mutant. It takes the average brain 25ms to process input.
Smashed my nose into your video now... and you are totally right! The worsest scenario is the "snd/ret all line level" absolutely! But to me the "all inst. level" don't sound too bad (if one want to save one block)... and a good level setting can smooth every little micro-differences. That said... well yep... the perfect match is inst. level send and line level return. (even if - maybe - the modern digital things are maybe less picky about that... than an all tube "electric/analogic" amp). And taking in consideration your suggestion... if one lose a block... can use a real efx pedal... with the proper in and out signal level.
After doing some a/b comparisons using two blocks as described and then using the FX loop at line level with the send parameter of the FX loop reduced by 15-20 decibels I've found nearly no difference in gain structure or overall level. Unless I'm missing the reason why it's not the same i would say using two blocks seems unnecessary.
How to set different signal types for send and return in Stomp XL? There is a choice in global settings, but for the entire fx loop.

You didn't explain the actual cable connections here. But i believe to do what you suggest, the HX Send Left (tip) into the ToneX and out of the ToneX and into the RETURN RIGHT of the HX. This way you can change the Global Settings in the HX to Left Send/Return to Instrument and the Right send/return to Line. If you just return it to the HX Left return, you only have one option for levels.
Is this correct?
FWIW, I have my ToneX in the left loop of the Stomp (not left and right). So, I use a left send and left return.
I had seen others asking the same thing about the actual cable routing to achieve but no response at all from Jason.

@@mabbatic In the Helix Global settings you can set those values. I'm not at home now to check, but I'm not sure if you can set the Send to instrument and the Return to line.
My question is: How does all this come into play with going into an amp and playing live? It seems all these discussions revolve around the effects board chain only. It always leaves me with more questions

The ToneX pedal has global settings for input and output levels with trim controls. Those can be adjusted to better match the levels needed for the HX Stomp effects loop block.
Yes, but that is a different thing than the proper impedance settings in HX Stomp which have a dramatic effect on the tone as shown in the video.
@@JasonSaditesI realize impedance can be mismatched. Did you do the level matching in Global in the video? If I missed that I misspoke. Although the impedance mismatch is fairly easily changed with a passive inline adapter.
I would definitely opt for instrument level on the Stomp. ToneX input is likely more sensitive to impedance difference than the output.
@@DigiArc what adapter would you get? Most of the stuff I see always ends up with an XLR and I just want ts to ts. Doesn't seem to be a common thing

I did it that way to match the sound and worked mostly ok. But now I will do the two blocks instrument-line for sure. Thanks Jason!
I personally find the Line level still messes with the tone in a negative manner unfortunately.

Interesting. I heard more bass in both the "correct" way, and the instrument level fx loop in comparison to the direct. Line level was definitely crushed. I think you missed the most important comparison that people were contemplating though: The "correct" way with 2 blocks Vs. the instrument level fx loop. I feel like they sounded the same when I tried to click back and forth 🤷♀
Either I am misunderstanding your comment or you did not watch the whole video. The very first comparison in the video was Tonex Pedal direct to the sound of it with HX Stomp with 2 blocks, Send set to Instrument and Return set to Line ( 5:29 ). It is my preferred way to set it up as was clearly mentioned in the video and was the whole point of this video ( 0:22 ). So I am not sure I know what you are referring to that I "missed" that was "the most important comparison that people were contemplating". That was literally the topic of the video and first example shown.
@@JasonSadites Sorry, I was commenting about clicking between around 6:27 to 7:52. I see the purpose of your video was more-so to compare each path to the Tonex pedal direct. I think that 2 separate blocks is the best way to connect them as well. Its crazy how much using the Line level path affected the tone. Very helpful video, thanks!
Ok, so my 2 cents on this, i have tried using my hx effects in instrument level only (u can only set global configuration there... but... it has 2 fx loops)
so what i did is set one (fx loop 1) to line and fx loop 2 to inst, this way i go out of fx 2 and come back through fx 1 and it sounds much better... i had much more noticeable artifacts and it pissed me off and then i remembered that tonex outputs in line level and after i matched the levels it all disappeared... so thanks for this tip buddy :)
So basically we have the same setup and I am doing the same thing FXsend1 (INST) - FXReturn2(Line) but when I switch the FXReturn2 from instrument to line, the sound gets crushed, how exactly did you match the levels may I ask? Through HX Edit?

I’m getting clipping in the TONEX hooked in fx loop when using the helix distortions. Is this bad for the TONEX? How do you correct this?
Can I ask where your Input Trim is set on Tonex Pedal in the Global Settings?

@dreadnotpop I would try dropping that down to around -10db and if you need more level raise the output level to as high as you can go without clipping. Should solve your problem and make thing sound way better!
@@JasonSadites increase the output level on the Helix (stomp btw) going to the power amp? Or the TONEX going back into the Helix?
@@dreadnotpop Tonex going back into Helix, although raising it in Helix would likely work too, but I would raise it into Tonex first.
Can you not just go into Global settings and set the send to instrument and the return to line level and use the 1 FX Loop block in the stomp?
No unfortunately not.
I think that tonex pedal needs an update that allows us to select the output type (line/inst)
Am I missing something here? Doesn't the HX Stomp have separate settings on the Send and Return in the menu? In other words, set the Send to Inst and the Return to Line.
No they are switched in pairs unfortunately. There are two sends and two returns on the Stomp, left and right. Both left send/return can only either be set to either Line or Instrument as a pair as can the right. We can set the left to Instrument and the right to Line or vice versa. Hope that helps :-)

Hey Jason, I'm running an HX Effects with an FX loop out to a KSR Ceres, and then returned. I can't seem to find any settings on the send and returns. Any ideas? Does the HX Effects already default to instrument level going out?
I've found them... but I don't see an option on HX Effects for separate input/output levels on the 2 loops.
(Press the button with three Horizontal lines next to the save button, select Global Settings {on Footswitch 6} and the first option is ins and outs... and on this device I only see a choice of Line and INST applying to both the in and out.)
So... I already had instrument level, so I guess I already had the best option going.
Reamp box .. 1 loop… problem solved.
