    Yes, I am another angler that would fish mostly for big roach if I lived in a place where roach lived. I used to live in Yugoslavia in Novi Sad snd used to catch big roach out of the Danube and especially the Donau-Tisa- Donau canal in spring...many in the 2.25-2.75lb range but that 3 pounder remained elusive. Same in England, where 2lb 11oz has been my pb since 1973! And, totally agree its finding them thats the hard part!. Thanks for the lovely video!

      I used to fish the River Thames at Runnymede at night often during the early 90's. I will never forget one superb night session when my friends and my late brother-in-law John decided to have a night party instead !! They retired early and crashed out in the van. When they woke in the morning they asked me if I had caught anything. The look on their faces was priceless when I pulled in the keepnet and showed them a pair of 2.5lb roach :) Legered old smelly stilton on quivertip done the biz :)

    Caught one of these specimen on my second ever fishing trip. At first I thought it was a small carp the way it fought and the way it was just bending me rod. Was catching nothing and decided to try some spam on a floater and I caught it and was amazed when I saw it. Probably won’t ever catch one again

    Beautiful session and beautiful fish!
    I'd like to ask about the heli-rig set up. I find myself using heavier reel line for this style of fishing so that I don't need a leader, but I can definitely see the benefit of the flouro leader. Is there a safer system than using a line stop that still retains the finesse of this set up? The safe systems for heli-rigs are aimed more at carp and so seem out of place on a roach (or tench) set up.

    Hi Dean nice video mate . Your dead right location is everything and also the fact that some people r assholes cause they wont tell you the place or the spot. I just watched 6 sea fishing videos from a person and I read the comments and 2 people asked him where the place was he told both of them different spots ( What an asshole ). does he think that someone will nick the fish out of the sea ? .

    I agree it's all about the water, if they don't swim in there your never going to catch them, that's why they are out of most anglers reach because the majority of class waters are either no publicity or exclusively syndicated

    Many years ago a 2 wasnt that hard, I had a massive number of them even from farmer field dikes, actually now I think about it the same goes for big eels, they are pretty rare now where I am but as a kid and through my 20s, some 25 years back they were annoying if anything as they took lobs and other stuff used for tench etc. I have carp fished now for the last 15 or 20 years so havent fished much else but from what Im told, this catch here in the video in todays standard is a bloody good days roach fishing.

    Fishing for big roach with a bite alarm... I've seen it all now...

    • @portcullis5622
      @portcullis5622 3 роки тому +2

      People even use bite alarms and bolt rigs for crucian fishing! What next; grayling?

    • @MassiveLib
      @MassiveLib 3 роки тому +1

      @@portcullis5622 to me it's criminal. Zero skill to catch such a iconic fish...

    • @portcullis5622
      @portcullis5622 3 роки тому +1

      @@MassiveLib I know what you mean, but I suppose bite alarms are just a tackle accessory. I do use them for carp and tench and they allow me to watch the wildlife in the long gaps between bites (I tend to fish low stock density, 'natural'' waters), but that doesn't stop me float fishing as well. I think it is more the "catch at all costs", earnest attitude that often goes with bite alarms (and bivvies) that bothers me more. In the end it is down to the individual. Personally I would rather catch species like roach, crucians and grayling on the float, but I still enjoy the challenge of trying to hit roach bites when quivertipping on rivers for chub!

    • @MassiveLib
      @MassiveLib 3 роки тому +1

      @@portcullis5622 for me bite alarms is setting a trap, waiting for an alarm to pull you out of your stupor, striking then reeling it in. It's not active enough, it's not engaging with the environment or the fish, it's for stoners watching their arse grow... Harsh but true. Take a carp angler out of his bivy put a fly road and crystal clear water and a wild fish in front of him and watch him flounder.

    • @portcullis5622
      @portcullis5622 3 роки тому +2

      @@MassiveLib Bite alarms can be used like that, with fixed lead rigs, which, if left unattended, I would argue is, in effect, a deadline or trap and therefore illegal. Sadly, I have seen young carp anglers run halfway round a pond to reel in a self-hooked fish, which is terrible.
      I tend to use running leads, don't own a bivvy, always fish right next to my rods and would never sleep and rely on an alarm. I am old enough to remember staring at silver foil for hours on end in the 1980s! It was lovely to hear the hiss of the foil, but I remember missing fish on wet or windy days when I couldn't hear them, as you can't stare at them constantly. On at least one occasion, a carp was well into the lilies and lost before I noticed the foil moving. So, I think that bite alarms have a place for stillwater fishing for carp and tench (especially in winter when action is slow or non-existant), but I won't use them on rivers. All they do is alert you to a bite, so if you are making tea or watching the wildlife, you can immediately switch back to watching the indicator. Like any angling equipment, it all depends on the attitude of the angler and as long as they are not disturbing others, I think they have a place. I definitely agree that they seem a bit out of place for species such as roach, rudd and crucians. If I am ever lucky enough to fish a crucian water again (not seen a true crucian for decades), I would use a light float rod. On days when conditions have been tricky, I have caught the odd grayling on the quivertip, but it always feels like "cheating" compared to trotting a float!
