I had an intuition about my personal style early on but my mum and my sister always stirred me away: too plain, not enough or the wrong accessories, not feminine enough, etc…it made me doubt myself and I followed their advice! Even after leaving home I was still trying to please/emulate them. It took me a long time to embrace my style and decide to follow my intuition, my taste.

I am new to your channel, and I just love it. I don't follow any "influencers," and I hate that word.
I love your look and your advice.
My experience with clothes is a little different. I'm 5 feet tall, and weigh 84 pounds, and I am of normal proportions. Finding my size has been a struggle almost all of my life!
Sometimes clothes just overwhelm me, even when they are in my size. I feel that I have always been a fashion minimalist, but a little bit fashion forward. I had breast cancer 35 years ago, and recently had my reconstructed breasts removed, and am now flat...even more of a challenge! One good thing, however, is that I can wear children's sizes.
I'm 71 years old though, so I have to be careful!

EMILY, this was SO good! I have really come into my own style within the last 7ish years, and watching style content like yours has helped me very much. For an example, I have become a big fan of scarves and bandanas by seeing how you style them. I would say about 90% of my clothes are secondhand, which I find freeing to test different pieces and accessories when I'm curious without making a huge investment. I am a big fan of your channel. Keep up the quality content!

So well thought out and articulated. I would add that there are very few clothing items that can't be used in at least 3 seasons. The idea of seasonal clothing is also really just a business driver.

Oh, I think that’s highly dependent on an individual’s location, climate, and lifestyle. In cooler months I wear jeans and long sleeves; in our hot and humid summer I’m all about breezy dresses and skirts with sleeveless tops. There is very little overlap in my seasonal wardrobe.

I totally agree about trends, I do keep an eye on them though, because when a trend aligns with my personal style I may be able to find those pieces that are more difficult to find (I wear tons of blue, so I love it when blue is trending, and I'm petite so a trend with cropped jackets is perfect for me).
And yes to details! I'm so detail orientated, it can add that extra dimension to an otherwise basic outfit!

Hi Emily...As I have gotten older, I realized I was perfectly happy dressing for me rather than for how I thought others would react. I wear black or gray 90% of the time, but I think the details in a piece of clothing help me dress with confidence. Thank you for giving us the great little styling tips that are fun and special. I have become a real fan of the bandana and little scarves that you shared with us.

Thank you for the insider fashion advice. It took me forever to figure out why I couldn’t wear capris. Short legs and a very long torso. But there are ways around that too! I discovered by watching you, that if I pair my black lugg boots with my black capris… , the look becomes more cohesive and you don’t notice my short legs. You’re a smart cookie, Miss Emily.

Thinking about it now, I think working in the fashion industry for so long made me love neutrals and fewer clothes 😂- the opposite of what people might think would happen. Trends just came and went so fast and colour was a big part of changing trends. I wore mostly black when I had so much available to me because I was trend weary. Your content is always thought provoking Emily. I would have like to have seen some examples of what you were talking about for visual interest. Examples of mens wear hacks or cuffed jeans or for those of us who don't know Blippi, a picture would have helped. I was thinking of Jena Lyons when you were talking about leaders flying their own freak flag but who were you thinking of? Thanks again for all you do. ❤

Thank you Emily for sharing the tips you have learned along the way. I have a very fashion loving friend that I meet for lunch every so often. We both go the extra length to style ourselves for each other. I often choose clothes that only someone with my physique can wear. When I see my daughter, I usually tone down my presentation as I am aware that I am her mother. She is also super into fashion and style. Trends are a fun way to sharpen my creativity styling the pieces I already own. I typically invest in new footwear for the year as that is the quickest and surest way to update an outfit. All in the details, balance and styling.

I live on a fixed income so it’s difficult to find that quality in less pricey clothes. Although quality for me is where it’s at. Thank you for any thoughts you may have. Appreciate you and your all you do for us!👏❤️

When I worked in visual merchandising the fashion office decided to promote the popularity of the then Pirates of Penzance revival on broadway. This was way before the “puffy shirt” episode of Seinfeld. The windows (and theater presentation in the suburban stores) were just crazy pirates. This lasted two weeks and then moved on to color blocking or vegetable dyes. These were the years that Izod polos were layered three deep and some were buttoned up with contrasting knit ties. Fun to wire up and look like they were blowing in the wind but if found in the wild? Ridiculous.

Love this vid-I watched it twice! Such good info. Trends drive BUSINESS, not true style. 💡On some level I knew this, but the way you articulated it hit me , and is my new mantra. I recently got sucked in to buying a trendy pair of jeans that I knew was wrong for my body shape, but I was trying to be “current”. Nope! They are going on Poshmark, lesson learned. Every idea in this video is spot on. Thank you!😘

When I was teaching I found that what I wore really affected the way kids perceived me. I always started the year with blazers and skirts or slacks and warm colorful accessories. Later in the year I could wear jeans, but I still wore sweaters or blazers. When I wore black the kids were always asking me if I was okay! I believe my clothing and my behavior helped them respect me. Plus, the little girls were always interested in what I wore and why I wore certain jewelry!

Your explanations are so informative so people can understand it. One of my biggest pet peeves is when you try on things that are obviously not your exact fit, maybe they are baggy and the person helping you at the store says oh but that doesn't flatter, that's going to make you look bigger than you are. And then I have to explain, well that's exactly the look I'm going for.

Know your comfort level. Regardless of the season or trend, I am most comfortable when I can push up my sleeves. I also need to layer. I rarely walk out with a top and bottom. I usually need a tank top underneath, or an over shirt or blazer over.

One of the things I've learned is to purchase based on a garment's measurements (rise, inseam, etc) so that I am clear about how those proportions will work for me. If those measurements are not posted, I ask :-). At some point I realized that the model may be 5'10" and that the garment is fitting her NOT in the way it will fit me. Focusing on proportion details has been a complete game changer for me when adding to my closet OR when deciding what to pass along to another wearer. Edit: This shift in focus has also allowed me to "allow" the quirks in my body style. I am soo much more accepting of the way my body really is and it completely sidesteps being disappointed when clothing doesn't "look like the photo."

8th grade and I begged my mom to allow me to wear her cardigan. She relents and I put it on and I am dancing around the room. She walks in and tells me to take it off and turn it around so the buttons are at the back and she ties a Hermes scarf around my neck and belts that thing....I am in EIGHTH grade and she lets me wear this!!! The next week I am wearing her freakin Dior dress to school. So goddess darn cool.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on trends. I think it's a word that gets talked up a lot but what is it really? To me a trend is an idea that takes off with the masses, so that you see it everywhere you look. I don't think the runway designers/models show trends (sorry, you tubers who have videos on that!) - I do think they are trying to MAKE their ideas become trends. However, if a new style doesn't filter down to where every clothing manufacturer has their own version (even those in Target, Walmart, etc.), then to me it's not truly a trend, it's just an new idea. Just my 2-cents!

Zhuzh...ugh! I Can't even anymore. At first it sounded attractive and fresh but has been so used and *bused that it ends up meaning nothing. It's like: Your outfit looks wrong? Zhuzh it up. This top looks dull? Add some zhuzh. The fit is less than pristine? Zhuzh it until it does... What does it mean? Jazz it up? Jack it up? Spike? Boost? Adorn? ... Festoon? I mean. Eventhe very 80's "putting zip into it" sounds preferable at this point...

Color -- you really need to do more on this topic! Gray is just so WRONG for you. Gray is "already dead"; gray is "blah-blah"; gray is "ho-hum" -- I'm an artist (30+ yrs) and gray is what remains after all life-chroma is removed; and this my dear, Is. Not. You. I suppose I keep thinking I will see you mix in something that pops b/c your personality absolutely pops. No, it is not an interesting juxtaposition of the gray with your personality, IMHO you need to add a bobble or 2 to warn the idiots out there that "this pretty puppy has teeth". Whew! so much to say, leaving so much unsaid. I'll try to find time to come back. I hate leaving comments but you always make me want to say so much!
