Great video. Thank you for all the work you put into it. Cheers from Texas.
Thanks very much mate, cheers!
It became available for me yestarday but I changed my mind thanks to you.
I will considered the 4.1 version...
Something I found with my 50l machine was that it struggled without the lid on during the mashes due to the amount of heat lost through the top. Once I started putting the lid on and used the thermal jacket the temp was much more even and the top was only about 1°c difference from top to bottom.
Thanx for your honest review Gaz, I was thinking about it I’ll probably hold off for a bit as my gen 3 does the job just fine.
Thanks for watching mate, Cheers!
I previously did extracts and partial mash kits only so either would be a huge upgrade.
Think its time for me to start using the rice hulls. Your brews are so much clearer during your mash. I generally use finings at the cold crash at the end to clear my beer up :) Great video - loving my Gen 3 :)
I use clarifiers all the way through , well depending on the beer, get it clear in mash, add whirlfloc etc to the boil and sometimes others to the keg or fermenter! Cheers!
Best way to test out a brew rig brew Pilsner 😆 sorts the men from the boys and the good from the great brewers.
Nothing to hide behind all bones are bared a beautiful style when brewed well and even better when you brewed it yourself.
Love ya work Gash I look forward to seeing that pilsner in the glass.
Couldn't agree more! Cheers mate!
Great video mate. I just sold my gen 1 and I'm hanging out for the gen 4 to become available in NZ.
Going to have to go use my mates G30 to keep my keg full if beer until i get the BZ.
Very keen to brew a NEIPA.
Good luck, I hope he lets you use it enough! Cheers mate!
great honest review mate!
Thanks Ken! 👍
Thanks for the review! A mate and I got a Gen3.1 for cheap and it's been working well after a few brews... sort of want to try a step mash now haha
They can be fun... sometimes... hahaha Cheers mate!
Cheers Gash. Great, honest review mate.
Cheers and thanks Stass!
Fair play to you for doing these great videos whilst you're suffering. Dedication to the cause!
It's a shame that it takes so long for Kegland kit to reach the UK and even then the range available to us is pretty limited.
Thanks for watching mate, I hope shipping speeds up soon, I think it will, they are getting more distribution in Europe and hopefully the UK too! cheers!
@@HomeBrewNetwork oh it's not the shipping that's the problem. It's the availability from our distributors. Brewzilla Gen 4 still not available to buy in the UK. Most of what I can't get here I buy from a certain Chinese online retailer.
Woah, that's interesting! I've never seen all 3 oat types used at once, let alone in a NEIPA. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching. Cheers!
Nice improvements!!
Cheers mate!
Cheers Gash, as usual great vid. Step mash is the way to go for pils, I have a herms on our pilot kit that works a treat for that 😎 cheers Mate 🍻🍻
Thanks for watching mate. Cheers!
Hey Mate cheers for the fair dinkum review mate. I'm still mashing in an a plastic igloo. Trying to work out if the $200 difference between the Gen3 and 4 is worth it. I usually only do half batches so gotta factor that in.
Hard to say if its worth it, but you know the fact the screen is up the top, and you have a bit more space is pretty good! I would say yes, its worth it, unless you can grab a cheap 2nd hand gen3 . Cheers!
The BLE thermometer really makes a big dufference for multistep mashing!
Agreed. Cheers mate!
I loved the cryo hops tho I used them last 10 mins and flame out. As well as dry hop
i found my temp probe was out by 4 deg c on the cold side . i did the 3 step cal now all good
My probe temp for mash was near spot on, I meant to add that in the video and forgot! Cheers!
Gavo, nice work mate! I brewed Pilsner 2 weekends ago and exactly the same issue with temps. Probe was showing 65C (2C above plan) and on top was just 54C with 19L Mash and 5.4kg Grain (BZ Gen 3.1). I can't tell how that beer ended up coz on Diacetyl Break atm and cold crash tomorrow but will work on this crap. Cheers mate!
for 5.4kg I'd start with more water, unless you're adding more for the steps. With the Gen 3 because it had a bigger dead space I could let it heat up hot and then I'd pump it all up the top and stir it in, you could get 5L of hot wort, where as the Gen 4 you only get half that. Cheers!
Ok, thanks for that head kick Gavo and yeah you right I actaully had to add 3 more litres to Beta step coz I messed it up with Brewfather for unknown reason and temp went so far but Alpha temp was struggling again ffs.. well Im in learning curve with this all in one stuff coz had to strip my old girl down, after 13 years she was leaking everywhere and I had enough :D. It was my 2nd brew with Gen 3 but I will get there hopefully :)). Cheers Gasher!
On your idea of velcro 3d printed mounts for the controller. Another idea might be rare earth magnets. Easier to clean. Will stick and hold easily and won't fade over time.
As long as they don't mess with electronics they would be a good option!
pretty cool video, great job
Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers!
Hi Thanks for another very informative video. It is always good to get a review like this worts and all style. I am a stage where I was seriously considering up grading from my GF S40 to a Brewzilla G4 65L but I am now thinking is it worth the extra money. As I see it all these systems no matter the brand suffer exactly the same problem of mashing temerature management. I strongly believe that the best way to avoid some of these problems is to have a very high recirculation rate, full blast would be ideal, coupled with really good kettle insulation and a very course grain crush even if that means a slightly prolonged mash. The thing is, as far as I am concerned, if I do a 66C mash the starches in the crushed grains are converted in the first 30 mins of the mash even if the grains are only very lightly . The rest of my 90 minute mash time is taken up by eluting the produced sugars from the grains . I then sparge to further elute sugars I am getting a mashing eff of circa 82% now. With regard to my situation do you see spending €1100 of a BZ G4 65L money well spent over sticking with my S40 ?
Some mashes are complete in 30mins, but a lot aren't. I sold my G40 but only because of size, B65 being bigger of course and the silly sizes of fittings GF equipment uses, it's like apple with different chargers etc, it just became a pain in the arse. Both good machines.. Ive dialled my gen 4s in for mash temp, not even using PID control, but yes a steady flow and a good traditional grain crush. No double crushing or fine crushing to extract 20 cents more out of the grain etc. And don't be afraid to stir. People over think the mash way too much, you can mash in a bucket or a shoe if you insulate it. So I guess if you want to brew bugger batches you need to upgrade, otherwise probably not. Don't worry about eff%, the number looks big but in practice it means little. Cheers!
Shit hang on just seen S40... Didn't know there was such a thing.. guess it's just an urn and a basket? Either way it doesn't matter my comments still stand. If you don't have a flow or pump, it's fine, as with all systems take your grain temperature and work on your strike temp.. then insulate
@@HomeBrewNetwork Hi Thanks for the information. Yes the S40 grainfather is their very basic model. In fairness though although there are some erm cosmetic differences between the S40 and the G40 the real differences are power, the S40 is 1000W or 2400W and the really major difference the user interface which is no where near as sophisticated and there is no connectivitey . All that said I have made really great beers with the S40 but every brew is very hands on and if I do a 40L batch the heating time and boil are maybe a bit feeble. However just like yourself I would like to make larger volumes and the BZ G4 65L does fit the bill in that respect as well as all the bells and whistles as well. I have two 32L conicals so one brew of say 55 to 60 L would allow me to do either a split or just one big brew and fill both and the GF could be used as a sparge water heater and pump over so not wasted .What do you think of the build of the Brewzilla? I am tempted and Chrissy is coming up nice way to treat myself :) All the best !
@@johnpantling9284 couple of things here again, Grainfather measure their vessels different to all the others, you cant get 65L of wort out of a 65L brewzilla after the boil without topping up, like most things 65L is the full volume to the top. The G40 you can get 40L out without top up. I brew 23l or 6 gallon batches and can get a full double batch out of the 65L without topping up, absolutely nothing wrong with topping up though. The other thing, I guess this is more a personal thing, I've never really found connectivity and automation useful at all. Only thing I sometimes use is the timer for preheating the water before I wake up, which I used to do on my old school HLT with a timer switch anyway. I find brewing too organic and each brew day slightly different, I don't rely on set timings and auto modes since anything could go wrong at any time, leaks or blockages etc. Cheers!
@@HomeBrewNetwork Thanks for all that info mate very kind of you! I am in many ways brew like you, with the S40 you have to be hands on and inventive :) I think I may stick with my 40L S40 because I can back liquor to 46L as you point out . All the best
Love this video, very informative, I’m looking at getting my first gen 4 , as this video is close to 12 months old is there any talk of a gen 5 being released soon?
Havent heard of any Gen 5s yet I'm afraid! Cheers!
Do rice hulls affect the taste or not at all?
And yeah btw Thank you for great videos and good information. Very valuable for a beginner like me. On my way to buy the Brewzilla. 😊
You got a new subscriber 👍
Not at all. And thank you!
Useful video. Got my gen 4 on the way. Quick question on how you sanitise your plate chiller as I noticed you said you don't run the pump while boiling? Also what's your process to get the entire volume down for an 80C whirlpool for example? Cheers
I bake my chiller in the oven for an hour the night before. Or you can run hot water from your hlt through the chiller. I rarely do 80c whirlpools I find them a waste of time and hops unless doing a NEIPA, even then not every one, just a waste of time. Though if really think it’s needed just recirc through chiller back into the kettle. I never pump while boiling, it’s not good for the pump and I’ve never had a blocked pump. Cheers!
I have the same temperature problem when step mashing with my Gen 3. I was hoping this would be fixed in Gen 4.
These things can be managed, just takes some work. With the Gen 3 because it had a bigger dead space I could let it heat up hot and then I'd pump it all up the top and stir it in, you could get 5L of hot wort, where as the Gen 4 you only get half that. Cheers mate!
How about double wall vessel. or neoprene jacket to help the temp fluctuations?
jacket will help any vessel its not going to help the temp steps much, it will a little. Cheers!
it would be great if you could dip a sieve in the boil to see how much grain got stuck above the hop filter plate during mash
I did use a sieve, it was barely nothing, not even worth mentioning, if you're getting grain in there, there's something going wrong. Cheers! I'll see if I can find some footage
Here you go mate. cheers! ua-cam.com/video/jJqqNxAvLik/v-deo.html
Do you have a video where you use the max recommend grain amount? I believe Kegland says the malt pipe is made to fit 10kg of grains. I've struggled with 9 as the mash was way too thick to properly stir, let alone recirculate
In the 35L? I don't do over 7kg. Would never bother with 10kg, never heard that mentioned. But then I don't watch any shops videos, or people that work for shops. Cheers mate
What voltage is the unit you are using a in this video?
Awesome, I'll stick with gen3 and probably just buy a whirlpool arm..
I'm interested in plastic pressure fermenters/ unitanks.. I use the fermzilla, and since I've started serving out of it and skipping the extra step of cleaning and transferring to kegs, I never want to look back! However... its too big for a normal size fridge to fit with the stand (need to balance it in there which isn't ideal) and definitely too big to fit 2 vessels in..
What other options are there (like the all rounder) that you know of that hold over 23l but have better dimensions more similar to a corny keg so i can fit 2 in the fridge?
I dont know of any that size and shape... Kegland have the 8 Litre PET kegs bit.ly/PETKeg8L they are very cheap to set up, if you want to transfer to them.. Cheers!
Convert a few corny kegs to floating dip tubes. I've got one that I use exclusively for lagers
Would a neoprene jacket help with controlling the temperature and keeping it more stable?
Insulation is always good, I used to insulate the return pipe too on the earlier units, have just been lazy. Cheers!
Great vid Gash. Will you try pushing it further with the boiler extension?🍻
I have an extension which is great for heating up water, enough for the whole batch.. but as far as getting a longer mash pipe and trying to brew in it.. hmm yes you could, the re-circing would be near impossible if you wanted to push it to its limits, but you'd still make great beer... Its just not very practical.. You're be much better off buying a bigger unit. I'm not sure i even want to buy the bigger mash tun just for the fun and a video.. just get in the way after that. Cheers!
@@HomeBrewNetwork
Thanks for your thoughts mate.I think i might just stick with my Gen 3 for a little while longer.
@@HomeBrewNetwork Is the re-circing tough because of how much grain the water has to flow through? I have a 35L + extension and just bought a 400 micron brew bag that fits the whole space. Hoping I can do a bit of recirculation. Cheers!
@@beernie1946 Yes it is, the thing with a bag is it'll be slightly more forgiving with flow because it can go through the sides, not just the bottom, but at the same time that can be a problem because you don't know if the bottom is getting much flow through, it gives in one way and takes in another. I don't use bags much because I don't like dealing with the mess, harder to handle, if you're planning to fill that right up and have maybe 8kg or more of grain, which will weigh 16kg wet, it'll be heavy, hot, sticky drippy and messy. I guess you a have a pulley or something? Not so much for the weight but to hold it up while its dripping, because you're not going to be able to balance it on the top or anything, not easily. Just see how you go! and Good luck!
@@HomeBrewNetwork Thanks Gash! I am planning to push it to the limit and see how much wort I can get out of it. I do have a pulley I'll be using and I'm hopeful I can pull it up just enough that the bottom of the bag is still in boil expander and it'll maintain its shape. I'm sure it'll be messier than I expect!
Setting up your PID settings will have a massive difference to usability. Both Aussie forums have good write ups on setting up PID in general not specifically this system. Otherwise loved the review.
Yeah something wasn't right, though it was setup to the suggested best settings.. I guess I'll find out if I try again. Cheers!
@@HomeBrewNetwork It'd be best to fine tune your PID settings with water. For over shoots your likely looking at raising the D value or lowering the the I value. Note if you take it too far you will never hit your target temperature. The original ArdBir (matho's controller) was programmed to only use the PID algorithm once temperature was within 2 degrees of set point. Also make sure you've calibrated your thermometers to the system at mash temps, while they both may agree at 20°c chances are they won't at 65°c.
cheers.
@@michaelmasters6320 The other brews never overshot, yep they'd mostly lower right down and take their sweet time to get to the temp. I reset the machine half way through thinking it just a random bug/fault, but it made no difference. That's what pointed me to it being a physical thing, maybe a design thing, maybe a freak protein build up, or something else.
The unit has been calibrated twice, with the firmware at the moment it is a complete nightmare, ice then near boiling water, that's whys its reading 105 at boil I assume, because its bloody hard to do.. They are changing it so you can do the ice one, back out, do a boil and then do the second calibrate step, because at the moment the 2 step calibrate is done all at once. But the mash temp is dead on, I meant to show that footage in the video but forgot to add it.
I still think any 10c temp change is going to be very slow with only 2L dead space wort to play with, you cant pump too fast, unless you're riding it, which you're going to need to do anyway, I just cant see it doing it with any speed.. but we await the next firmware update, which could of been done by now I don't know, I never seem to hear about them till after the fact. Cheers and thanks for your thoughts mate! Much appreciated.
Thanks for the feedback! I'm curious, with the 65L version, what is the most wort you could get inside in a fermenter? I'm trying to know what fermenter to buy to be able to use it at the maximum space.
well, without mucking around 50Lish +/- of course if you top up in the kettle during boil or fermenter you can push those numbers up. Cheers
@@danejames7098 I was having a custom BIAB of 150L, that I was putting in two 60L fermenters on a small cart. Not easy but it works.
Hi Mate, thanks for the videos - if you had to choose between the G40 or the BZ gen 4 which one?
I'd choose the G40 simply because its bigger, its a better size, but when the BZ64L comes out that will probably change. Cheers!
Do you do anything special other than using the standard false bottom to filter the hops? Been brewing with my gen 4 and having issues with filtering most of the hops out of the system when transferring to the fermenter.
Nope just the false bottom, a very small whirlpool and its good to go. No running the pump when boiling. I brewed the other day and did a small whirlpool with just a spoon, maybe 20secs and made a trub cone and emptied it out fine. I do use whirlfloc . you can see it on my youtube front page, theres a live portion of brew day video. should be 2nd video on my page I think. Cheers!
What about g40 vs gen 4? Which do you prefer to brew on and putting price aside which would you pick?
Price aside, the size of the G40 wins, its near 20L bigger and with the extra width in the mash basket it's more like using the Brewzilla 65L. The downside of the G40 is the silly little fitting they use for the recirc arm, which makes nothing interchangeable unless you mod things. G40 is winner if money is no object. Cheers!
I notice you add the hops without a hop basket. How does this not clog the pump?
I've never had a hop clogged pump, I don't run the pump while boiling which I think some do that get clogs? Cheers!
Great review! Is the pump stronger on the gen4? I never seem to get the best whirlpool on my gen3. Would be good if kegland did a controller upgrade for your old gen 3 like grainfather. Cheers
Are you trying to whirlpool through a chiller? Cheers!
@@HomeBrewNetwork no I just use the arm and have the pump on full the only time I’ve had a really successful whirlpool is if I put my stainless paddle in my drill and then I really get it spinning and then quickly put the whirlpool arm in and turn pump on and I’m talking I’m not even using a lot of hops either most I’ve done in a whirlpool is 80g. Cheers
@@rayw9067 Hmm thats strange.. Old days I used to whirlpool with a spoon by hand, just for maybe 20 seconds and used to get a good trub cone. I wonder why its not working for you?
@@HomeBrewNetwork I can’t figure it out because the pump is going fine I’ve back flushed it the lot apart from just purchasing another pump to be sure stuffed if I know. In your video you have the mt Everest of hops lol.
what about half batches? how would this work for them? 12-13 L of final volume to the fermenter?
Yes for sure, much better than in the old version as there's a lot less dead space
Are you using the 220v version or the 110v ? You seem to have a quick nice rolling boil
240v which is the equivalent, probably exactly the same machine as the 220v but in Australia we only have 10amp. Cheers!
100% step mash is a bitch. One benefit of a separate probe i have paired to my PID controller is it stays in the mash... perhaps a great use of a Kegland Pill.
Testing some modifications next week
Gash...ive been watching your videos off and on for a while and would appreciate your opinion. I can get a new Gen3.1.1. for $399 at MoreBeer here in the states, but the Gen4 is $599. Are the updates to the Gen 4 worth the extra $200.00...35L versions. From Tallahassee Florida by the way.
The beer isnt going to be any different.. The controller up the top is probably the best new thing and the other stuff is just fluff, unless you really want the wifi connectivity then yeah you need gen 4
What kind of mill are you using and can we get a close up of the grain crush, I am trying to dail in my grain crush for better recirculation flow, elimnating grains in the bottom of my unit after/during boil and better sparging with my Gen 3.1.1
At the moment the Kegland one, Maltzilla bit.ly/MaltzillaKL but I'm being lazy, usually I like to use my Malt Muncher, but truthfully it doesn't matter. For the grain I'm using now, Gladfield, its set to 1.35mm. They suggest 1.45mm, I go just a touch smaller so I can do some smaller speciality grains without adjusting. Cheers!
can see it here about the 8.40 mark, this is a patreon video for the WCIPA cheers ua-cam.com/video/gI5ejGwGYPU/v-deo.html
@@HomeBrewNetwork Thank you for the reply and helping me along in the right direction.
does the gen 4 not include the overflow pole in the malt pipe or do you just not use it? i've got the previous gen and i do find it annoying to stir the grains with it!
Its not included in the Gen 4
I answered this yesterday, not sure where that comment went! It's not included, but I havent used it in the gen 3, I think I got rid of the centre pipe in the gen 2. Cheers!
Hey thanks for the honest review mate. I was wondering do you check mash temp at the top or middle? Or just trust the reading from the bottom? I usually find theres a big difference but maybe not worth worrying about!
There will always be a slight difference, its the nature of the beast, and the more you open the lid and muck around the more the difference, I find they settle in just fine, the more you help them the better, accurate strike temp and grain temp really helps. The Gen 4 is struggling with temp changes due to the small dead space, but I think the bluetooth thermometer will really help with that. I also have the new grain basket now so flow might be a little better. Single infusion mashes are no worries at all though. Cheers!
Does anyone use this system for distilling? I'm going to get a 4 inch 4-plate still column and still don't know what boiler system I want. A lot of conflicting opinions saying I need voltage control for distilling. This system looks stable enough to maintain temps tho??? Anyone able to help.
The gen4s are great for distilling, I will say though maybe hold off if you are not in a hurry because I believe Kegland are bring out new distilling hardware that has some great new ideas, either way if you also get a bluetooth thermometer you can control the boiler via the temperature in the actual column where it is important. You dont need a voltage controller with the gen4.
@@HomeBrewNetwork by new distilling hardware do you mean distilling column? I’ve heard they are working on a plated still. My main concern is the temp cutting in and out creating fractioning in the column
How would you rate the the gen 4
65 litre compared to grainfather g40 would you recommend the brewzilla over the grainfather
I would recommend the 65L due to size and price. but if you dont need the size, and you have the money the G40 is great, its major downfall for me was that all the extra fittings you might want are not the usual 1/2 inch fittings you might already have, so you need to modify things. G40 is solid, but expensive.
Thanks for that I had the g4 but it wouldn't work on my WiFi strange so that's why I'm considering purchasing gen 4 brewzilla at the moment I'm brewing with basic equipment ie mash tun cooler and plastic hlt with twin elements good beer will the brewzilla make better beer or is it just a simpler method also with my setup I've no way of circulating my mash tun or kettle thanks again mate
Ps I do appreciate your input keep up the reviews lovely to watch cheers
@@jacktyrrell2050 your beer will be the same, you can just do some things a little easier. Somethings may be harder.. The mash is the easy bit, the ferment and packaging is far more important
Thanks for that so no need to be investing in expensive equipment ha ha cheers mate
I’m tossing up between the Gen 4 and a G40… would love to know your thoughts on whether the Grainfather is worth the extra $$
If money is no issue I think the G40 is a better unit. Here's a comment from another question I did yesterday.
Cheers!
Though, the money you save, you can buy a lot of ingredients and extras, like a HLT and other things you need, or at least make the experience better.
@@HomeBrewNetwork thanks Gav! I already have a digi boil so was going to use that as the HLT. I’ll see what the minister for war and finance says about the extra spend! I was hoping to go a Gen 4 65lt but there’s no ETA…
@@battlelux yeah its frustrating, I hear they arent far away, but yeah who knows..
10 months on…has it proved itself to brew better beer than the gem 3?
Some things are a lot better for sure, controller, centre drain, less dead space etc some things aren't as good as 3 like not enough dead space lol
@@HomeBrewNetwork ha, yeah I think I like that bit of threshold too. My kettle isn’t that perfectly circular. But any great gains on the whole ‘better beer’ side of things..has it blown your hair back Gash. Has it given you back to that old feeling when you pop your head out the side window of the new valiant as you’re hurtling down a country road after you traded in Camry
@@samstock6565 no. Not worth upgrading unless you want those new features lol
Dreaded lurgy for 6 weeks?
I have long covid unfortunately. Cheers
20% oats oh man
Since this video is a year old have you come to a solution regarding your issues to your step mashes?
Probably what I said in the video, about adding some hot water each step, but also not sure you've seen my mash temps video, about adjusting some settings
ua-cam.com/video/uOhiBH47-WY/v-deo.html
velcro? really... take the protective cover off, its rated waterproof? sometimes watching you raises my anxiety levels, you create storms in teacups. I love the g4 it's honestly faultless.
Velcro for me would be great, as I said not for everyone, but for me picking it up so the camera can see it, velcro will be perfect! Relax mate.. hahaha Cheers!
