2021 Acura TLX Type S vs Genesis G70 vs Kia Stinger GT // DRAG & ROLL RACE

- Опубліковано 24 сер 2021
- The 2021 Acura TLX Type S ($62,375 CAD, $54,645 USD) has some stiff competition out of Korea in this drag race. Beside it is the newly facelifted 2022 Genesis G70 3.3T ($59,000 CAD, $51,445 USD) and its direct relative the Kia Stinger GT ($52,995 CAD, $43,690 USD). All three cars make similar power from a turbo’d engine, and all three are all-wheel drive. This should be an interesting race - things aren’t always what you expect when you line up on the strip! Watch to see what happens! SUBSCRIBE
A big thank you to Mike from Markham Acura for bringing his TLX Type S

The hype of the Type S was greater than the actual final product
yes unfortunately.
Typical. Acura disappointing yet again.
i fear the same will be for the upcoming integra as well. acura has the marketing down but thats about it.
Just like the current NSX.
@@1MTEK the NSX is sick but the type s is a disappointment.
Genesis is doing great things. I’m glad you guys get their vehicles often, so thanks
I really hope they bring back the coupe. I bought my '12 3.8 r-spec coupe brand new a decade ago. Had ONE serious issue with it...the clutch stopped coming back up after it was depressed. I took it to the dealership and they fixed it, no money out of my pocket and no hassle.
So far, it's been the best large purchase I've ever made aside from my house. I just really prefer coupes over sedans though.
@@tizodd6 Whoa.. that's pretty bad for the clutch pedal to not come back up! I had a 2013 2.0T in a 6MT, where the DMF was so clunky and annoying that I decided to trade-in for a 2013 2.0T 8AT. It ran fine for a good while then at 120K miles I had engine knocking, which was taken care of by Hyundai, but after a while some other ticking noise started to appear. Then I was told by Hyundai that my brakes were binding, which I had fixed. Then my keyless entry went out. I had enough spending money on an Asian car and went German.
@@vspec15 Yeah, it was not fun lol. I had to put my foot under the clutch and physically lift it back up.
Not too bad once I was out of 1st though. Still very annoying until I took it in to get fixed.
Imagine walking into a hyundai dealership and paying $65000 and then bringing said 65000 hyundai for service back to hyundai dealership with all the $15000 econoboxes
@@VanguardX Not sure I'm understanding your point. You're saying you believe a company's entire vehicle lineup all have to be within the same price range?
Dear Acura,
While there’s so much more to a sports sedan than straight line speed, you simply cannot introduce a car to a segment so late and make it slower than every existing car in the segment. How ridiculous.
Sincerely,
Billy
Love this haha
Bloop
Its a sports sedan. You think people watch drag races before buying onw of these? As long as they're well screwed together and the performance is more or less on par, no one will care its 0.5s slower...
In my opinion, there's almost no other car as balanced as this TLX right now if you look for a sports D segment sedan. Its not the best at anything but it doesnt really have any actual flaws either.
@@AI-qd4vb Yes, I do. Some people care about these silly things to an extent. Especially the half-@ss car people. It’s bad optics.

@@-SP. damm what year and what issues ?
As a Honda fan it's terrible to see how slow the TLX Type-S is. Should have been 500lbs lighter, no reason to weigh that much.
It’s a few things. The weight, the transmission never starting in first gear, the car automatically upshifting in manual mode when redline is hit. As some people would say the Type S handles probably the best out of everyone( Haven’t really heard it though), better tuning, and a horsepower increase would be nice. Only other issue is people comparing it to a M3 even though they said it was not a M3 competitor, it’s a M340i competitor
@@goldendevereaux Agreed it's definitely many things, my biggest concern is how fat it is as that is the enemy of a sporty sedan. Even if massive power was thrown at it and it went fast in a straight line it would still need a diet to handle better. 4221lbs is only 191lbs lighter than my 4412lb 2012 Honda Odyssey ex, that is embarrassing.
Let me build a better one real quick drop 500 lbs, give more power to the rear wheels, tune the transmission and give it 50 more hp. Done, you're welcome Acura.
Current Honda/Acura planners know nothing do the brand heritage. They're supposed to loud on the outside loud on the inside and light. They crammed how many 100s of KGs of sound insulation for a performance model. It's like they didn't know what they were trying to build.
& Common no LED fogs or HUD those weigh almost nothing and yet type S doesn't have them...
@@ljpr360 Agreed
It seems like Honda doesn’t give a fuck about Acura 🤦🏾♂️

The TLX fanboys are pathetic at this point

Does Acura have fans? I've never met one. Honda sure, but does anyone really care about Acura specifically at this point?
@@Striker50_ I feel there is a lot more to a luxury sedan than it's drag racing ability. lol. How many people are drag racing their luxury sport sedans in the drop off lane at their kid's school or picking up groceries?
@@hamsterbrigade true lol but for those that gunned for the Type S specifically, they had other priorities
Have a 2019 G70, definitely happy with my choice, liked the stinger a lot but liked the interior of the G70 better
Yeah me too
To each their own, but I found the Stinger interior less "posh" and really well sorted out
@@dejansiljegovic4467 fair enough, I liked the more "luxury" look at the time, even though the stinger is actually more practical. I also slightly preferred the exterior styling of the G70 as well, so the overall package convinced me to go for it. Plus the concierge service, 5 year maintenance and warranty, and the fact that they delivered it to my house in a fancy enclosed trailer all made me happy with my decision, as well as the dealership gave me some extra little gifts with the car, just made the overall experience really awesome.
@@alexbeattie5621 I don't need all the "gifts and services", I saved on that in the price difference... still the same warranty and I like the longer look of the Stinger as well. We're just 2 different types of customers and made our decisions based on different factors that appealed to us, and there's nothing wrong with that.
Same. One year left on 36 month lease of G70 Sport. Then, decision time.
The Stinger is a beast for the price. I may very well pick one up soon. Has impressed me since it was released.
I've had mine for two years now, you will LOVE IT!
That dealer markup though is pretty damn high
i'd like to get a CPO stinger, but i'm thinking the previous owner will probably drive it like an animal based on what i see on the road.
there's no way in hell i will pay for a new car and eat the depreciation, unless it's a car that i can potentially buy new and sell in a couple of years without losing much.
Try a used f series m340. Prices ain’t too bad and the b58 is a great engine stock with easy aftermarket potential. Also, you’ll have a Bmw vs a Kia.
The f series 340 still looks and drives good by today standards as well. Just change out those plastic charge pipes for metal ones in you’re thinking long-term ownership.
Why would you get a stinger they are already planning to cut them from their lineup
Bought the Stinger in 2019, still happy with the choice!
How many miles have you done so far, and has reliability been solid overall?
Same here!

@@germanengineering204 I got mine in 2018 and I'm at 49,000. Quality issues have been minimal. I bought one with a faulty sunroof so that had to be replaced after buying. Also the original brake pads left residue on the rotors causing a bit of wobble when I would brake. Had those replaced and resurfaced the rotors, all has been well. Didn't come out of pocket either.
Have the 2018 GT and would buy it again. Awesome performance, good looking and enormous space for loading stuff perfect if you live in the countryside.
I purchased my 2019 Genesis G70, April 2019. Currently over 63K miles and no problems.

The one thing that I don't do to my Genesis G70
I don't baby my baby! I call her The Beast!
It is amazing to see how the Korean brands have improved in a matter of a few years. Great cars, great technology and competing head to head with much established brands out there.
It's all about preparation that takes a long time. Hyundai has been buying Steel Foundries, hiring designers, and retooling factories so they start 2020 strong. Car makers have ups and downs depending on their investments and product life cycle. As the 20s progress, other vehicle makers will make competitive vehicles. Take for instance Toyota that is starting to release vehicles which don't look hideous.
Aside from the clear cost difference that 100k Mile factory warranty is simply unbeatable. No contest. A warranty holds more weight than a 1 second faster 1/4 mile IMO
That being said, I think my next vehicle will be in the Hyundai family (Kia, Hyundai, Genesis)
still shit, no history of reliability
@@NSUScooter Try going through their dealerships once and see how you feel.

I’ll only have to deal with them once. But I’ll be dealing with the car for 60,000 miles. Not a bad exchange IMO
The G70 has always been a little bit faster than the Stinger. It's a little bit smaller and lighter.
“I’m the ankles” 😆 good one
That Genesis looks amazing!
I like the way the genesis looks the best but I also really like the sport back design of the stinger. It's a very hard choice. If the genesis had the sport back it would be great.

My Genesis G70 is a week old and I couldn't be happier. Big thanks to this channel for helping in that decision!
Does it sound like a hyundai? Be honest..
Even brand new hyundais sounds like imminent engine failure. Always wondered if genesis is same
@@jasonl2645 what are you talking about?
@@jasonl2645 I can't speak for Hyundai, but turning the piped in engine sound off, the car is remarkably quiet (which I personally like). Rolling down all the windows, you can clearly hear the exhaust and turbos at low speed before wind noise takes over. I wanted a luxury performance car that would last and that's (hopefully) exactly what I got.
@@edwardm.6132 the sound the cars make….. like when they are on. Running engine.
@@jasonl2645 Depends on the engines. Hyundia makes some bullet proof v6's. Their 4 bangers are hit and miss. That said, their 4 bangers have a chain like sound to them, in simple words because they are a cross between a diesel and gasoline engine. The new Thea III engine is supposed to fix alot of old issues and the turbo creates less carbon build up. The 2.5L non turbo on the other hand is questionable right now.
I had such high hopes for the TLX Type S - what a massive disappointment.
Look, it’s an Acura. Just be glad they even brought back a V6 option.😂 The G70 truly embarrasses that TLX though.
I don't get Acura. We want light, revvy, honda, v-tec style drivetrains, but in a 6-cylinder configuration for the higher price point. And yet, they continue to give us these boats. Toyota doesn't actually make any of their sportscars, mazda is so small that surely can't afford it, and the nissan z looks polarizing to say the least, so why hasn't Acura stepped up to fill that market gap?
Hey...it's a nice looking family car tho with a lot of piano black. :D
@@nolookey idk most of these cars feels like they are amed at moms that want some "performance " in it
@@nolookey The problem is that if Mazda had the money they would make a better car than all the other 3 Japanese companies. Nissan almost went bankrupt recently because they’re making their cars the way they used to again but better, Honda has more than enough money to make some super fun cars, and Toyota, welp that’s why Toyota is still in the lead. They just put a NA V8 with almost 500 hp in a compact luxury sedan.
I can't figure out for the life of me how Acura could have the Type S come back after 13 years and then come to a gun fight with a pellet gun!!?

@@connorm3373 hey that would make up that difference in that roll race for sure lol 100 lbs is a tenth of a second they say. I'm just surprised the G70 is lighter then the Stinger with the G70 being a luxury car and all
I totally agree. G70 is luxury car. Stinger is... sports sedan but it weights more. Stinger's tailgate makes the stinger more of a sportsback, not sedan but.... why lol

S-type should of been called A-spec. S-type needs 50hp more at least.
True but I still bought one.
A-spec is purely aesthetic. This Type S should just be updated with different programming for the turbo and traction control. That's all they have to do.
@@300zxdriver how do u like it so far? Any regrets with ur decision?
400 at least
No way man the A-Spec is a body kit package the Type S is suppose to be more of a performance oriented car with a more sportier engine and transmission and that’s very different from what the A-Spec is
Just because it isn’t the fastest nor the most powerful doesn’t mean it’s not worthy of the name
Type S needs a power boost to 380+ hp and a higher redline when they refresh it. 3.0T doesn’t pull hard enough at the top end, so it loses in any competition. I should like to think that they could squeeze a bit more power out and keep the reliability. They did it with the NSX.
@Burt Reynolds Corpse the TLX Type S is not as quick as it’s competitors for sure and Acura should’ve made it quicker, however, Acura as a brand is having record sales on every model, the brand isn’t going away anytime soon lol
Yes, this power boost can be achieved with higher redline, and Honda used to be one of the leading manufacturer of high revving engines. They were keeping up in the beginning, but I suspect that is only thanks to a short first gear. The moment they went to 2nd gear they started lagging behind.
TLX has a massive drop off in 3rd gear.
@@eyalcohen2080 this has a 10sp auto, it was long past second gear in this race when it was still competitive. The cars lack of high rpm power kills it in a drag race like this, not to mention the weight.
They should’ve put a stick in it.. I remember the TSX’s and TL’s being wayyyy slower being of the gearing on the auto’s.

No surprise. Love my G70 - it’s the better car of the 3.3TT platform and I always knew it was going to out perform the underperforming Type S.
I needed this video in my life!! I have had the 2006 Acura TL, 2013 TL, 2014 TL, and an Acura CL- ALL manual transmissions. After 15 years of driving manuals, I am ready for an automatic! I went to our local Acura dealership and walked around for about 20 minutes with no service. Went inside the showroom and walked around for another 5-10 minutes with no service, and finally left. After weeks of research, I test drove the 2022 G70 and 2022 Kia Stinger GT2. SUPER hard decision between the two, but I'm 95% I'm going with the Genesis G70. I want to keep some luxury and not give up the "fun" in driving.
G70 or Stinger, you can't go wrong but NOOOOO SAVE MANUAL!! Why don't you try the new Elantra N? Since you owned acuras, I don't think you would mind FWD? I would choose G70 if they released an AWD+6spd manual but only 6spd manual (4cyl turbo) + RWD is offered. Elantra N is now on my list.
That's a lot of red interior...loving it.

“Welcome back to the channel and welcome back to the vlog”.
The Type S definitely needs more boost. 400 hp would be much appreciated.
Horsepower is pretty weak. Not to mention the type S is super overpriced. Not worth $50,000. Might as well invest in a used Acura TLX. These cars are not meant for racing. Also, KIAS are no better. KIAs and Hyundai are pretty shitty according car experts and mechanics.
@RelentlesslV the tlx is better around a circuit than a straight line. With a lightning lap of 3:06, the stinger 3:11, and g70 at 3:07.
My two month old Stinger GT just got rear ended by a GMC Yukon. Luckily no structural damage, replaced with all new parts, in shop for two weeks and was left driving a Mazda 3 rental for that time. Man that was painful even though other guy's insurance footed the bill.
They should have named it the Type M for Mediocre. When will Acura step up and improve this model so it's competitive?
As usual “Acura” means “not quite good enough” in Japanese… 👀
Nah. Type S is for Sad
It’s great for the price - why don’t people understand how cheap it is to buy and maintain?
@@neelkrishna Kia is just as easy and cheap to maintain, plus they properly spec'd their vehicle.
It’s Acura. Since when did they make competitive cars? 🤣
I said it before and I'll keep saying... Acura really dropped the ball on the TLX TypeS. All the hype and failed to deliver. I'm so disappointed SMH
Same.
I’m sure it’s more reliable then those other two… now where’s the cool test for that?!
@@MPowerSubie12 no doubt it's probably more reliable but that's a given with Honda. The Type S is supposed to be the performance version and all I keep seeing is it getting outperformed by lesser cars
Same thing I said for starters it’s 4200 pounds they on some Mopar shit 😂
@@MPowerSubie12 nowadays people have car subscriptions and get a new "subscription" every 3 years or so. Unfortunately a car being reliable isn't a concern anymore. Wait until the disposable EVs become a thing.
perfect video to showcase the slow S4 and M340I "competitors"
Great choice!
I hope races and reviews like these:
1. Embarrass Acura enough to improve the TLX in short order.
2. Convince the powers that be to hand development of the Integra over to the FK8-R team
Acura Corporate is deaf/blind to these things.
And, I hope fidiots would realize that Honda/Acura cars, like Acura Integra, Honda NSX, Acura Legend etc. were never the fastest in 0-60, 1/4 mile, drag races etc. While they excell on the track like Type R (Honda NSX, Acura Integra, Acura TL, TSX, TLX new NSX etc.) and which is not the fastest on 0-60, 1/4 mile but it holds the Nurburgring FWD record lap time.
No no, development needs no go aaaalll the way back to the FD2 R that only Japan got
That was top level type R
@@styre "No no, development needs no go aaaalll the way back to the FD2 R that only Japan got

I wonder what you understand from or how you define define the word "development"? Not every developed car is the fastest car ... are you aware of this?
Acura confirmed that the new Integra will be designed in Japan, and based on the new 11th gen Civic...which gives me hope that the Type R team will get a hold of it.
The genesis is gorgeous and luxurious, the stinger is really cool looking and the acura is well, nice i guess
Can’t do nothing but agree
The only one I trust to be on the road in 20 years is the acura
@@htchero7 can't really argue but hyundai has pretty solid reliability and i don't think genesis would decide to change that for their brand, also, they have the best warranty so it probably will still be on the road even if it had shit reliability
@@htchero7 none of these cars will be on the road after 20 years. Most cars will be electric.
You can’t even get a HUD in the Type S, you have to get a TLX 2.0T with Advanced Package for a HUD. Just an all-around pathetic effort on Acura’s part. I remember when they used to be a great company… not so much any more.
You guys are all forgetting a big factor as well: aftermarket support. I threw a jb4 on my g70 and it makes 425whp, capable of keeping up with a c63 amg. They are wildly underpowered and very reliable above even my power level from the factory
I have come to expect awesome and Throttle house always delivers…
The Genesis looks like CLS-AMG from the rear.. Beautiful vehicle..
@@layne4376 How when it has its own unique corporate design? You're just hating.
@@layne4376 Your logic doesn’t make sense. There’s a difference between influence & copying. Because by your definition we can all point out manufacturers that then “copy” other manufacturers.
@@layne4376 this is slowly becoming untrue. Take their two newest designs...The gv80 was designed by the bentayga designer, who is KOREAN. It doesn’t look like any German suv. The gv70 doesn’t look like anything else either.
Acura had a clean slate with their entry, and they produced a car that trails cars that have been on the market for a couple of years.
Acura should just sell MDXs and RDXs. Quit pretending to be interesting.
As usual “Acura” means “not quite good enough” in Japanese… 👀
They should just get rid of Acura and reposition Honda like they do in Australia (more premium than its Japanese competitors). Bringing back the Legend nameplate would be a start.
@@keynesianeconomics4113 wouldnt the dealer experience be noticeable between Acura and Honda? Theres a reason some folks will always buy Lexus instead of Toyota.

I want to see them go around the track now 😌
That G70 does look very good
Do this again with the Cadillac 550T ! Same class ! 3.0 twin turbo . Would love to see that car against some rivals!
The Infiniti Q50 Sport and/or Red Sport would have been an amazing competitor in this segment instead of the Acura...
stinger: charmander
g70: squirtle
tlx type s: bulbasaur

To be honest, it would have been interesting to let James drive the Stinger vs. the Genesis and see if the MINOR weight difference between Thomas and the other driver leveled the field. Weight (regardless of any micro difference) makes the numbers. Another great video, guys! Thanks for the awesome content. Thomas is still hot.
I would love to see a Golf 7 vs. a sports car drag race. Just to really see the difference.
It's always hard to feel the speed of the cars, when they're "equally" matched
Oh man, I was on the verge of saving more money to order the Type S or just settle in for a Type R. Glad to see I have no regrets… 😂
The Type R is the best!
Don’t get the Type S. Ridiculously overpriced. If you do, get a used/older Honda/Acura TLX a spec. But, these acuras are not meant for racing AT ALL.
Great job with this drag race! For weeks, journalists have compared the TLX to their competition, and we finally get to see the outcome between the G70. What's surprising is the Stinger. For the price, that Stinger definitely makes cross shopping difficult in that segment. Genesis interior rivals the Germans and Japanese for the most luxurious, especially in terms of standard feature. Those seat designs are by far one of the most LUX. For what's it worth, the TLX does sound better? Haha
This old news. Another channel days after the release of the Type S did the race and had the same outcome.
The Stinger results shouldn't be surprising. Mechanically, it's the same as the G70, but it's 6 inches longer, 1 inch wider, and weighs 150 lbs more, so the slight win by the G70 was predictable. If I were to choose between the G70 and the Stinger, I'd take the Stinger because it has more back seat room, lots more usable cargo space with the liftback design, costs a little less, and to me it's a more sporty looking and attractive vehicle.
I wish had half of James’ sense of humour. Top lad.
Could you please do a comparison of a few cars just by pricepoint? like, 40k USD on a few things new/used would be fun. idk anyone that doesn't shop based on what their budget is and while recently looking between Veloster N's and Stinger GT's, I realized that 06-09 Z06 corvettes are also in that pricepoint...which REALLY got me thinking about what I could live with for a daily driver...
Thanks for all your hard work!
