  • This video outlines the process used to repair the Programmable Speedometer Odometer Module (PSOM) for many of the 90’s Ford vehicles. The PSOM is vital to transmission shift quality since the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) output passes through this module on its way to the Power Train Control Module (PCM).
When there is an issue with the VSS circuit, a code 452 will generally be stored in memory however there will be no check engine light. Instead, the “O/D” light on the shift lever will flash constantly about twice a second. Along with this, transmission shift points will be raised along with line pressure creating a very hard and abrupt shift since at this point, the transmission is in limp home mode. Continuous use in this state will shorten the life of the transmission.
This video doesn’t cover all repair scenarios one could encounter with the PSOM, only the particular failure that I’ve experienced. In some cases, the failure may not be obvious thereby requiring you to obtain a new PSOM from the dealer and having the mileage programmed in. However, that part is far cheaper than a transmission rebuild. So if your transmission is going into limp home mode, the PSOM is often one overlooked item to examine prior to dumping allot of money into a complete transmission rebuild. (1/1/2015)

Keep the microfarad rating the same, it’s OK to go up on volts but not down and you can also order higher temperature ones if you want.

Man oh man this is a great video even though I don't know a single thing about all those electronics. I mean nothing. I am having the exact same problem with a 94 F250 IDI diesel truck. My speedo after about 50 MPH goes completely nuts Also shortly after my truck would go into that same limp mode as yours. I checked the V-speed sensor but only for continuity. I don't remember what the reading was but assumed it worked. Now I don't know where to go next. That module behind the speedo is a complete mystery to me however the 1994 idi turbo-diesel does not have the same in 1994 does not have the computer hookups the 1995 truck would have. It is my understanding that the computer box in the truck only governs the transmission. I'm wondering if that could be where my problem is. I may have to ...but am afraid to send it to a trany shop and get a humongous bill only to find out it's a problem like yours. Does ford still even sell that circuit board? Seems ford doesn't want to even talk to you if your car is over 10 years old. God I admire people who know about all those diodes and compasitors. I watched your video and was amazed. I have been told it could well be an electrical problem though. I'm in Jacksonville Florida and wish I knew someone I could trust not to rip me off. You are a genius to figure all that out.

You can get a used speedo at the wrecking yard and plug it in and the mileage will be the same as the old one. I did this when I had a problem. I called a shop and they told me that the mileage is stored in the computer on board. I do like your videos

There is generous level skills involved here... Just saying, The electrical knowledge is hard to come by 👏

Where did you get that big schematic that shows the PSOM in parallel with the speed sensor on the rear diff?

  • @rubenspits

Hello, this repair has to do with no changes. In the automatic transmission I only have 1 and 2. And the Overdrive indicator doesn't come on??

Same with mine. Cold weather shifts fine worms up and it shifts hard

How would you know if your Transmission is in limp mode? what are they symptoms? what does it feel like? is there a visual indicator of such?

We are going to send ours to place that repairs these in Joplin, Missouri. Your video confirmed the ongoing issue is probably this. We've replaced everything else, and then after the expense, find out that this may have been the issue all along.

Wow thanks! I had a puff of smoke come out of my dash in my 96 Bronco. I have been chasing VSS issues and I bet this will solve it. Thanks again.

Great work! I have been following your videos for about a year now since I got my 1997 F250 460 and they have been super helpful.

Neat vid. Came across when researching why my '94 f150 speedometer/odometer wasn't working. Ended up being the #5 "odometer memory" fuse. Glad it wasn't the PSOM like here. Although I probably would've attempted this had it been the problem.
