Today we are going to review the 2024 released Gibson Kirk Hammett of Metallica Fame Signature 1989 Gibson Les Paul Custom. This is a (poor) recreation of his fabled '89 custom that he picked up during the ...And Justice For All Tour and used for Fade to Black live. He had his guitar tech "black out" the guitar's hardware and plastics to give it its signature look. Most people associate this guitar with EMG pickups but Kirk and Gibson created the version of this guitar that HE wanted TODAY. You'll be disappointed if you wanted a one-for-one 1989 Custom reissue, but if you go into it with the right mind-set, I actually really liked this guitar. It is technically the first Gibson Signature Metallica Les Paul (that made it to production) that didn't have other artists also associated with it.

I now own two studios which are vastly different in sound weight and tone. Mainly since I have dimarzios in the newer 2013 model And Seymour Duncans in the 1983 . I also own an Epiphone Trad Pro III which is quite different from the Studios. I've tried other models. Like custom and they are vastly different in many ways . I just can't afford one.

When you turned up the Piezo output and played:"Fade to Black", I thought it was just about perfect. And, I'm not even a Metallica fan. I have covered that tune in one or two bands. As of January 2024, I have recently played a Godin (belonging to a joint member of the band I presently play with) that includes a Piezo output (with full EQ) and the standard magnetic pickups- plus a synthesizer interface that I imagine works brilliantly but that I'm unlikely to utilize. I've enjoyed layering the acoustic output with the traditional one.

IMO, a signature guitar is different than a tribute to a specific iconic guitar from an artist's past. If Kirk ordered one of these today perhaps he wouldn't get one with EMG's but if Gibson is going to label this as a Hammett "1989" signature then it should be authentic to that guitar. Why bother aging it if they're going to ignore other characteristics? Personally, I'm not a Hammett or EMG fan... far from it, but I'd be disappointed if I were. And then there's the price... basically upwards of $10k after tax for what, exactly?

Love you trogly but, just my two cents, I don't think it's drama that people are vexed by this signature. I think It feels like Gibson is trying to push a Gibson collectable and not a Kirk Hammett collectable. I think that if I was a big enough KH fan and wanted to buy a replica of one of his guitars, I would want it to be exactly the way that it is in the videos and pictures that made me love it. I would feel ripped off if I shelled out 8k to get a guitar that has the wrong pickups and the wrong logo. Imo Gibson really needs to reevaluate their current priorities.

@@rainyday2315 I think that may be objectively true, depending on how you feel about EMGs, I think that upgrade might be diminished by the fact that it's a KH signature. I think for me personally I wouldn't care if the pickups are better, I'd care that I'm getting an accurate replica of the guitar. That's my personal feeling though, I think it ultimately comes down to how much a fan is willing to pay and how accurate they want it to be

Equalizer and compression can be done on a pedalboard and helps take a lot of the quack out of the piezo. Some systems let you run a stereo cable out, which can let you just send the piezo to a dedicated acoustic setup and then front of house, no electric guitar pedals and amps needed.

    Salutations Austin!
Nice Signature Les Paul Custom, I would rather it not have the Murphy Lab treatment, just brand new condition would be my preference, however, I do like the addition of the Fishman bridge with the built in pickup, but I might have been wired differently, such as a stereo Les Paul is, except with the piezoelectric pickup on it’s own separate output.
In the case, it might be a good idea to use a magnetic latch to keep the storage compartment secure, so the contents don’t fall out all over the interior of the case, and potentially scratching the guitar.
The pickups could easily be swapped out for those who want a different sound option.
I think Gibson should offer a more affordable version of this guitar, without the Murphy Lab treatment, for working musicians, and also an Epiphone version for those on a smaller budget too.
It sounds pretty good, as is, and I would not be surprised if a lot of musicians would like a Les Paul Custom such as one of these.
Thanks for sharing this with us all!
Please have an excellent and awesome day!

Correction , the black hardware was fit on later in Metallica’s career. If you look up pics from the justice and black album era, the hardware was gold. Even in the booklet at 5:20 you can see the gold tuners , and they conveniently crop the pic so the tailpiece and bridge are out of the picture with Kirk’s right hand top of the bridge. If anything this a 2000’s era replica.

There are people on reverb and ebay trying to get upwards of $4000.00 for a set, lol. Let’s be real here, Gibson isn’t for players at all anymore. They’re entirely serving the collectors base, people like Trogly that collect everything they can, fawn over them like these things are their actual children and more often than not can’t really play but for damn sure don’t get out and gig the things. It’s why new bands play Fender or smaller brands over Gibson 5 to one, Gibsons aren’t priced for working musicians and they don’t care, they’d rather milk the diehards for $1000 “collectible” pickups with a fucking case than make a good playing, reasonably priced guitar. Buy used or buy someone else, fuck this brand.
