Awesome score after a significant risk Trogly. Further proof that knowing your stuff can pay huge dividends. 👍🏻 Clearly you will never sell it, but the thing that struck me is this guitar was in a case, sealed in a box for 22 years until you liberated its mojo to the world. The decal shrinkage is common with calenders vinyls that are a little cheaper. Cast vinyl doesn't shrink nearly as much. It can leas to the wrinkles forming like the Nascar guitar. Decals on wood isn't always easy to get them to stick.
good question......probably was in a "cupboard"for "stuff like that" and when the "director" or whatever "left", his stuff was sold off....the way all things go.....

I love that you (I'm assuming) learned the Chad Kroeger of Nickelback "Hero" song for the video. The Megadeth "Sweating Bullets" riff sounded cool too. The spider on the headstock is a great touch on this fiddle
That guitar *sounded* fun to play. If I had that, I think I'd work on a spidey rock opera/concept album or even new versions of cartoon theme songs. X-Men from the nineties had that killer tune I'm sure we all remember!

So, reverb just like eBay hasade it harder for sellers to scam So the buyer pays through reverb reverb that holds the money does not give it to the seller right away even after the item has already been shipped and arrived at the buyer's location reverb will still hold the money and wait 5 to 10 days and waiting for a response of some kind like oh this didn't come as shown or the description was wrong or whatever they want to refund it eBay and reverb and all these other places are resorting to that method where they don't pay the cellar right away
The box was Sony Pictures who released it but Columbia produced it. So somebody at Sony who didn't play got it as swag and gave it away or it was found in a closet years later and stolen by a Intern or somebody. Who likely worked for free.
My favorite Gibson guitar case logo was the Tone Feel Appearance Gibson Acoustics. Not sure how many years they used that logo but had a Blue Gibson EC-10 in the 90's withe that case logo.
10:21 HAHA that a 10mm socket for a volume knob!?! How awesome would that be!!! And nice placement... Trog - if you are not an automotive person - a 10mm socket is the one size no one can ever find when they need it. Memes about that didn't start showing up till long after this guitar was produced. Love the show!
The original seller probably kept it boxed because it's comic book related, comic collectors love their sealed editions, even if the seller looked sketchy not showing an actual picture of the instrument he probably didn't know how to sell a guitar but had comics experience.
It's almost like they put Angus Young pickups in there, interesting. Forget the Spidey sticker, it's a pretty awesome sounding high octane Lester. I wouldn't mind having that as an axe to record with.
That is such an amazing backstory and obviously worth that gamble. It certainly paid off. I can imagine the smile when opening the case. Gems can still turn up. Keep the hunt on Trogly.
I love that bridge pickup, but also what a find! I'd honestly put fresh and matching to correct spec strap buttons onto that and keep the originals in the case
My father in laws 75 Les Paul has very similar wear/corrosion. It was left in its case in not so great/moist conditions at one point. This is definitely the same situation, Austin.
This is so cool! Just recently I was at good will, and I picked up a Dr. Pepper mountain bike, not thinking anything about it, after further research all I could find on it was a for sale post for an identical bike, claiming their aunt won it in a contest and put it in her garage! Needless to say it was a well spent 45$
This is so cool! I gotta ask though, does the wrap tail bridge impact the tone vs. a regular Les Paul bridge? And if so, could that be why this guitar sounds raunchier than expected?
@@TrogGreat to know! I had been curious about the wrap tail bridges on Les Pauls. Would be cool to try one now that you mention the feel is different. Thanks as always Trogly! Appreciate all your great content and knowledge.
The print (decal as you called it) was very pourly applied, not centered at all and there’s a lot of dust or dirt underneath. I apply decals and prints on stickermaterials for over 32 years now, and this would never pass quality control. I am almost shure they used a photoprint on vinyl, because a real decal does nit shrink that much without ‘breaking’ And the damage on the edge of the neckpocket is not due to shrinking, but due to poorly cutting some overlapping material due to not centering the sticker.
The case is a very safe space for a guitar... but when the finish is still brand new and "off gassing" it might not be the safest place to leave it sealed for 20 years. A fully cured finish... yup, you're good. Be careful of guitars with celluoid - they off gas in a dangerous way!

I love that you (I'm assuming) learned the Chad Kroeger of Nickelback "Hero" song for the video. The Megadeth "Sweating Bullets" riff sounded cool too. The spider on the headstock is a great touch on this fiddle
It’s a “Spider-Bucker”
I'm super happy he is keeping it for his personal collection. It's not even mine and it made me giddy!!!
Hey, when do you think your museum will be good to go?
private ambassador tours are already running. No ETA on public offering at this time
troglysguitarshow.com/museum-tour/
So how did you clean the tuning machines?
I’m sorry but that paintwork would never be allowed to leave the Gibson factory with all those imperfections in it
Just curious, do you use an amp and mic it up to demo guitars? If so what amp do you use?
I enjoy that Spidy Flick! Just rewatched it in fact. Great find Trogly!
That guitar *sounded* fun to play. If I had that, I think I'd work on a spidey rock opera/concept album or even new versions of cartoon theme songs. X-Men from the nineties had that killer tune I'm sure we all remember!
Dunna nah nah NAH nuh nuh
Something I don't see mentioned are your amp settings. Is the amp set the same for each guitar you review?
pretty much
This is a keeper. I’m not a Spider-Man fan but that guitar is good to go.
What was that first song called?
The second this video started I said to myself 'if he does not play nickleback I'll be pissed' I'm glad this came to its logical conclusion
I must have missed something in your assay, how do you know if the maple is flame maple under the decal?
He said "Too bad there's not a flame top because it would show on the exposed edges."
Are you sure the fingerboard is Rosewood? Looks like unstained ebony which G&L used on the Broadcaster and others.
If that bridge pickup was a mistake, Gibson should start making them. That thing sounds great with dirt.
This one is your JACKPOT man, I would always remember this one besides the Les Paul and the Snake Pit
How did you clean the Gold HW? Thinking of replating the strap locks in gold?
much cheaper to just replace. I don't plan on modifying this one as I know the full story
@@Trog You sir are a lucky man! This thing is just a WOW piece! Love it! Congrats!
@@Trog Watch repair channels do their own gold re-plating. It doesn't look like it needs loads of specialist kit. Definitely cheaper/easier to replace them. The original ones don't look too bad after a clean. Maybe would be cool to restore what it came fitted with, though.
@@rockinrob2004as a chemistry nerd, re-plating is a genuinely fun easy and fascinating process. 2nd favorite thing I ever did in lab class right after figuring out what chemicals gave Fireworks their colors
It always kills me how Nitrocellulose finishes can just wreck guitars when left in their cases without any air circulation for a decade or two. All the more reason to actually play the instruments that we invest our love and money into.
And yet purists insist nitro is better than poly, I had a nitro guitar and was always worried about sweating on it and ruining the finish.
To be a student at the best Luther school you have to mix you own nitro cellulose so don't apply except to lens crafts - k
So, reverb just like eBay hasade it harder for sellers to scam
So the buyer pays through reverb reverb that holds the money does not give it to the seller right away even after the item has already been shipped and arrived at the buyer's location reverb will still hold the money and wait 5 to 10 days and waiting for a response of some kind like oh this didn't come as shown or the description was wrong or whatever they want to refund it eBay and reverb and all these other places are resorting to that method where they don't pay the cellar right away
The box was Sony Pictures who released it but Columbia produced it. So somebody at Sony who didn't play got it as swag and gave it away or it was found in a closet years later and stolen by a Intern or somebody. Who likely worked for free.
Is it normal for a Gibson to leave the factory with the truss rod in that condition?
out of the custom shop - yes. Way more common than you'd like to think!
@Trog thank you for the reply! I just bought a 2021 Les Paul like new but was wondering about the truss rod.
Growing up as a spiderman fan in the 2000s, It's fun seeing this video come up in my subscription
Growing up as a Spidey fan IN THE 1960’s it was cool to watch this, as I’m also a huge Les Paul guitar fan!
My favorite Gibson guitar case logo was the Tone Feel Appearance Gibson Acoustics. Not sure how many years they used that logo but had a Blue Gibson EC-10 in the 90's withe that case logo.
That thing friggin' rips!
How do I get a t shirt?
Were the humbuckets modified/ reproduced for the 1967 pickup? That’s when the original Spider-Man cartoon came out
I dig it. Also, Tobey was the best Spider Man.
Love the show!
what is wrong where the body and fretboard meet at 5:15 crappy gibson at it's best
I’m glad you picked this up as well. Thoroughly enjoyed today’s content! 😀
12k huh?
Classic plus @ 9k
498t are like @ 14k
I wonder
Maybe a leftover '97 Classic?
Based on the baseplate it's a slightly overwound classic plus. I've seen em reach 12k before and they're often paired with the standard classic neck.
Don't think too hard.
Nice find.
Strangest thing to me is that it sat unopened.
Surely even a collector would open to check?
A collector opened it instantly. Did you not see That?
I think this sat at the studios for 20+ years and was forgotten about. The seller was suspiciously close to headquarters.
@@Trog Maybe it grew spider legs and walked out of the storeroom to be released to the world 😄
The original seller probably kept it boxed because it's comic book related, comic collectors love their sealed editions, even if the seller looked sketchy not showing an actual picture of the instrument he probably didn't know how to sell a guitar but had comics experience.
It's almost like they put Angus Young pickups in there, interesting. Forget the Spidey sticker, it's a pretty awesome sounding high octane Lester. I wouldn't mind having that as an axe to record with.
If you ever decided to sell it, you would get more money from Comic collectors.
So how much did you resell it for?
I kept it
My experience is some sellers arent able to take some good pictures for their items
Bridge pickup could be a 57 pro.
I had them in an SG, really hot pickup
So what do these usually go for then? Would help to know how good of a deal he got.
Look them up
This is so cool!
No
It affects the feel, but wouldn't affect the tone that much
@@ChrisShortyAllen Good to know, thanks!
@@TrogGreat to know! I had been curious about the wrap tail bridges on Les Pauls. Would be cool to try one now that you mention the feel is different. Thanks as always Trogly! Appreciate all your great content and knowledge.
I still want one of those spiderman mustangs..sooo cool..
your playing has got so much better cool keep it
His tone too! I used to skip the distortion sections of his tone demos 😅
@@gonzoengineering4894 we can always learn cool
I was Surprised that after the Snake Bite Guitar rip off you took the chance. Well done Austin! Great Les Paul!
I just remembered, Jim Root also has a guitar he ordered from Gibson and never opened… I wonder what that guitar looks like.
I am surprised that a guitar went through the post office or a shipping company and arrived in one piece.
For $3k with a wrap tail, damn I’d spend that for that!!!😳
The print (decal as you called it) was very pourly applied, not centered at all and there’s a lot of dust or dirt underneath.
Fun episode! I’m assuming you may be in Atlanta from the flyover footage while you were playing!
I think you mixed up your Spider-Man movies... 04:25
1. Spider-Man - 2002
2. Spider-Man 2 - 2004
3. Bully Maguire - 2007
I dont mean to sound like an arachnophiliac, but that guitar has my spidy senses tingling.
Being the first to owner to play it is such an honor, I’m jealous
Woah dude..where did you get that giant big ass fretboard cover for covering and cleaning up frets..cool..i need one..lol wow
StewMac probably sells those
The typical out of tune sounding Les Paul
Can definitely hear the wraptail on that one.
Did he say dont keep guitars in their cases? Ive never heard that?
The case is a very safe space for a guitar... but when the finish is still brand new and "off gassing" it might not be the safest place to leave it sealed for 20 years. A fully cured finish... yup, you're good. Be careful of guitars with celluoid - they off gas in a dangerous way!
💙🛎️🧨 I disagree with the previous and this is why: He said it in the excellent narration. The reason he did the sale was for us.
🙏Thank you for doing this. Here , the guy selling the video rights is taking a risk. It is amazing how many people out there who cannot communicate by any written form. But the other guy (the seller) had a life. He was selling this thing and this was the only way. You bought cool, made a dream of a life deal yet everybody was happy. ABD , you got my attention. A guy with a small IRA who paid too much fir a pig in the polk. My “New” instrument is a Cole Clark Angel 2 … and I am so psyched to be in a guitar wold, rather than piano or wind instruments, which has been my music. A great show. Subscribed.
Man seeing that this thing was in the case all the time makes me think i finally ought to sell my 1993 Fender Stratocaster off because while its not new, i cant play it anymore due to nerve damage My fingers dont work right all the time.
Kinda didnt want to sell it had hoped I would meet and marry someone who was a musician and give it to them just due to the sentimental value it has but that is unlikely to happen.
Great find and story Mr Trogly. I love videos like this. Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘
That guitar sounds good 👍 Early 2000s I've been saying that
A signature Spider-Man bridge pickup 😂
Gibson uses the Beanie Baby business plan.
If it was a sealed box, wouldn't the guitar box be in a bigger box and sealed with the brown paper tape?
J. Jonah Jameson: I want photos of Spider-Man! I want guitars of Spider-man!
I WANNA KNOW WHAT THAT PICKUP IS, PETER! DON'T COME BACK UNTIL YOU FIND OUT! 😂
Can you PLEASE document a Dale Earnhardt Sr Les Paul
Great timing being the Daytona 500 and the anniversary of his death is this weekend, Dave Grohl was gifted not the Dale Sr but Dale Jr Les Paul from Dale Jr himself.
Gibson should put the spider decal on the widow series…that would’ve kicked it up a notch!!
