I've been aware of these 2002 Spiderman Movie Les Pauls for many years. My fascination with them started because they were one of the few promo guitars that have a cult following and typically sell for premiums instead of the usual price cut. The reason for this being... they were promo-only guitars with another batch made for people who worked on this popular movie.
I got this from a very vague and cryptic Reverb listing that showed photos of a different example and stated it had been sealed in the box. Not even a single photo of said box was included. I reported the listing at first... but after seeing it sit for so long, thought I'd go scam baiting. To my surprise... this ended up being real!

Congrats Austin, what a wonderful find.
I was hoping you would have black-lighted that Les Paul, I've never seen a Darkback under a UV light.
Also, very cool that YOU were the expert to verify the authenticity of this example, not to mention the discovery of the different batches. 👍
Congratulations. I've been seeing this new thing that I'm pretty certain is a scam. You click on the sight and have a potential of getting a new Gibson at a ridiculously low price under $100. I didn't bite on that. Good job with the Chad Kroger song. I can't believe you didn't realize that song was from the movie.
@@clarkbabin9799 you're "pretty certain" a new Gibson going for less than a Glarry is a scam? 🤔
How do I send you a picture of a guitar
If you do, I'll offer you $3 to take it off your hands which I'll guarantee you I won't be outbid on. Actually, now that I think of it, Chad might be willing to bid a fiver himself, so if that happens I might be willing to go a little higher. ;)
Edit: fix typo
$3k, you stole that
Yes, it’s stolen
@@benfinesilver2250 Hahaha i didn't thought of that but you're right someone who have an original of that doesn't even list it properly and is ready to murder the price of such a rare guitare is probably a thief, or it's been inherited but it's a bit too new for that so yeah you're probably right. For reference this guitare isn't sold less than 10k anywhere.
When I toured the Custom Shop way back when, Philip Horton was my rep and tour guide, there was all sorts of those Spiderman guitars hanging up on the wall being finished.
Wait, isn’t this basically just the Jeff Beck oxblood guitar?? His was a ‘54 with very similar specs to that. Smokin deal!
Yeah ... is it dark-back on the front?
Probably not similar except maybe the dimensions. '54 Gibson vs. '01 Gibson. There's gonna be some serious discrepancy.
I totally get where the seller was coming from. In Collectibles, especially comic-based, "mint in package" (for action figures mint on card or MOC) is an important phrase. Even comics that came in sealed packages, MIP distinguishes it as pristine.
ok i get it.....but i won't spend a penny on this "stuff".....cheers.
Why wouldn't he take a picture of the box though? Is that something you can't do in comic collectibles?
Then why bother commenting at all?@@stratman9449
I'm not defending his choices given this guitar, just explaining there might be a psychology behind it so perhaps other folks can get some insight in case it ever comes up for them.
@@banditkeithkingofduelmonsters
Yeah, for a collector, mint-in-box is the ideal.
Rick Harrison will offer you $300 for that Guitar, and he'll be taking all the risks.
4:26 Just to clarify, this was the 2002 Spider-Man movie (first of the trilogy) so it could be some people's fave (definitely my fave Spider-Man movie ever... even more than the sequel). Either way, it's not the "bully Maguire" (Spider-Man III, 2007) movie.
Exactly bully version was the bad movie, smh😂 trog stick to your day job. Guitars movies, not your Forte
I noticed that the image is from the 1st movie, and a promo item for the 3rd one would have said "Spider-man 3" on it. Also as you alluded to, this was made in 2001.
THEY SAY THAT A HERO COULD SAVE US.....IM NOT GONNA STAND HERE AND WAIIIIIIIIIIT
Now that's going to be in my head for the next 17 days... I'm OK with that.
I'LL HOLD ON TO THE WINGS OF THE EAGLE AND WATCH AS THEY ALL FLY AWAY!!!!!!!!!
You caught what he did too.
I missed the part where that is my problem
Me too.
All the problems came from storage - a giveaway being the way the box was mildly damaged.
probably given to a crew member who took it for a relative who never used it or given to someone he passed and it was sold by whoever was clearing their stuff.
The only way to recover decals like that is with careful heat treatment but its risky.
i did once give a Gibson acoutic to my Niece. she claimed to have been learning on it. 2004/05.
in 2020 i got messaged by her about how to tune the strings and a week later about replacing them. Somehow I figure she hadnt used it since 2004/05.
at least not "properly"
whereas my daughter was given a Squier Strat and a really aweful amp. she plays expertly after 2yrs of pretty regular practice. She didnt think her playing sounded good, even though she knew it was a bad amp. so I plugged the guitar into a far better amp and she stunned herself at how good she was.
The thing is, My niece played various instruments and knows a fair amount about them. My daughter knows about keeping time from dancing, the guitar was her first actual instrument and she's killing it for a relatively short space of time. Though she'll freely admit, she finds restringing a bit fiddly she can do it and tune it. (she occasionally cuts off the string a little too short but thats all)
Thing is my daughter was 13 when she got the guitar. My niece was 29 & had high grades in Saxophone, violin, piano and flute. You'd think having that experience and wanting to try a new instrument, she'd have at the very least learned how to tune one.
Anyway, my daughter is now saving for a Gibson Les Paul as she likes the sustain it naturally has. And, the cheeky one pinched my Marshall Amp!
The niece was after one of my Telecasters and Marshall Amps and couldnt understadn why she got a Hell No.
Found out yesterday, Daughter's BBF's dad has the rare PRS with the dragon mosaic. Apparently its the most expensive thing he has on his insurance and he has a numbered, first edition Rolex!!!
Uncle Ben Bucker pickup sounds good
It does! It had...pop. Don't know how else to describe it. It popped out at you.
That bridge pickup is super hot. High output rascal. Let your bud Baker borrow it to record some metal with that crazy bridge pickup.
@@leechild4655 dude I have used Duncan Customs since 99 and right next to that is a 498T (also 14k) & swapped my 500T (15.4k with 3 double thick ceramic magnets) for a Fluence Modern. When the 500T based voice on that isn't enough, there's the EMG81 voice that has a 10db boost built in.
It isn't that hot. The latter is as hot as hot gets.
But a de-wound 498T or Custom is an intriguing proposition nonetheless. Still has balls, but is relaxed a bit, in theory anyway. Can't say there's nothing like it, but can't think of anything off the top of my head.
I seem to remember reading about 57++ somewhere ? I'm guessing that is what the bridge pup is ,? Congratulations on a smokin' deal !!
I was a Fender dealer for many years. When the 25th Anniversary Stratocaster came outI ordered one for sale and left it in the original carton unopened until a customer came in and was absolutely going to buy that guitar. It had been in inventory for a few months and I opened the instrument and was absolutely shocked that the 25th Anniversary Silver had cracks all over it. Needless to say, it did not sell that day. I returned the guitar to fender and they refinished it but the color wasn't quite the same, being more of a pearl white rather than the original silver. This was before the relic craze began, so I couldn't sell it for a bunch more as a roadwork instrument.🙁
I don't get the relic craze. Why would anyone want a damaged looking finish , my lp's stratocaster etc are all spotless. No buckle scratches . And no one touches them but me & my amazing luthier Tom Macblane.

A friend kept his guitars and equipment in an unheated garage for a considerable time and his strap buttons had a white powdery substance to them after the chrome had lefft, the frets also turned black, i guess you should keep them in your home if you can to prevent corrossion
Pull them out once in a while too! Cars and guitars want to be played with and fall apart from neglect!
My favorite Gibson guitar case logo was the Tone Feel Appearance Gibson Acoustics. Not sure how many years they used that logo but had a Blue Gibson EC-10 in the 90's withe that case logo.
Enjoyed the overdriven octaves part from Hero.
Not a guitarist but love your channel, especially the off brand ones like this. Congrats!
Interesting that the claim was that it had never been played before, but on the frets, you could see where they were corroded in some areas, but it others -- NOT! That means that finger oils got on them and changed the 'patina'. $3,500.00 bucks, just too hard to risk. I gotta call: "FAKE'!
I love that you (I'm assuming) learned the Chad Kroeger of Nickelback "Hero" song for the video. The Megadeth "Sweating Bullets" riff sounded cool too. The spider on the headstock is a great touch on this fiddle
I don't know why, but I really like this one. It sounds like a Les Paul should sound and it just looks cool with the dark back like that. The graphic even kinda works for it, which is something that I'd normally be put off by. Nice find, Trogly!
I've got a guitar that has ACTUAL spider webs on it. Cheap!
Truly intrigued by the bridge pickup. We must get to the bottom of this mystery.
Underwound 498T? Overwound 57? That'd be a LOT more wire.
AND...WHY would it go on this? Cool custom pickup for a run of less than 30 guitars?
Probably a 57 Classic Plus as they're hotter. It's still slightly hotter than the average for them but much closer than a standard 57 Classic.
They were often paired with a standard 57 in the neck.
@@StephenG1991 It's closer to a 498T than 57 or 57+.
Over or underwinding by 2-3k isn't common. All old PAFs were within ~1k, despite the haphazard process of the time.
Gibson reliably churned out T Tops at 7.5k in the 70s without issue. 490s, 498, 496 & 500T all are pretty reliablely close to spec.
498T and my SD Custom are 14k & different animals to a PAF.
Only 1k jump from 498T to 500T.
Trogster should contact the Custom Shop and ask them. Maybe they used up some prototypes on these, since most owners weren't looking to use them as players? Whomever got this originally, after all, never even opened it.
Jinkies, gang - we got a mystery.
It may also be a combination of hotter pickups and the bad solder work. Bad solder also increases resistance after all.
@@keineideefureinennamen4474 but it sounds so good!
What intrigues me is the "intonatable" wrap around tail piece/bridge. If anyone (other than Trogly) happens to know whether the saddles actually adjust in some way that's not immediately obvious in the view from the top I would sure appreciate some enlightenment.
I love that bridge pickup, but also what a find! I'd honestly put fresh and matching to correct spec strap buttons onto that and keep the originals in the case
Awesome score after a significant risk Trogly. Further proof that knowing your stuff can pay huge dividends. 👍🏻 Clearly you will never sell it, but the thing that struck me is this guitar was in a case, sealed in a box for 22 years until you liberated its mojo to the world. It’s quite possible it was never in tune until you tuned it up, albeit with new strings. Not an example I would want necessarily because I want to play my guitars but an awesome find nonetheless. That bridge pick up is a monster and overall I thought this Les Paul sounded really good. Thanks for the vid Trogly.
Probably a double win also, since these kind of stories tend to bring in a lot of viewers to trogly videos.
Speaking of monster bridge pick ups, I have Epiphone LP Cherryburst 60 reissue and the bridge pickup reads 13.8K Ohms!! Now that’s a hot one lol
The decal shrinkage is common with calenders vinyls that are a little cheaper. Cast vinyl doesn't shrink nearly as much. It can leas to the wrinkles forming like the Nascar guitar. Decals on wood isn't always easy to get them to stick.
So, who walked out of the studio with it.?
good question......probably was in a "cupboard"for "stuff like that" and when the "director" or whatever "left", his stuff was sold off....the way all things go.....
the stuff that lost its gold is probably a copper alloy and the metals that remained golden were probably gold plated, gold tends to be extremely chemically stable, while copper brass and bronze can oxidize more easily.
What do u use to oil fretboard and how did you get the frets clean
That bridge PUP sounds sick!
Hey @trog do you have info on how you cleaned up the fogging? My hardware is like that on my 339 and was wondering how i can get it polished up and how you do it! Thanks
Elbow grease
Virtuoso polish, but do it by hand or you'll likely lose plating
Most classy model of a spidy I've seen yet, absolutely beautiful..
Something I don't see mentioned are your amp settings. Is the amp set the same for each guitar you review?
pretty much
I enjoy that Spidy Flick! Just rewatched it in fact. Great find Trogly!
I’m sorry but that paintwork would never be allowed to leave the Gibson factory with all those imperfections in it
trogly i gotta say those riffs on your playing demo were some of your best sounding ones
Just curious, do you use an amp and mic it up to demo guitars? If so what amp do you use?
It's almost like they put Angus Young pickups in there, interesting. Forget the Spidey sticker, it's a pretty awesome sounding high octane Lester. I wouldn't mind having that as an axe to record with.
So how did you clean the tuning machines?
It’s kind of a weird pairing. Would never think that spider man is related to Gibson, or guitars in any way. The consumer crossover wouldn’t even seem related to me, yet here it is 😂
Gibson will do most things if you pay them enough for it.
That bridge pickup is great for distortion, but seems a bit too hot for clean playing haha
Bridge pickup could be a 57 pro.
I had them in an SG, really hot pickup
Can definitely hear the wraptail on that one.
I just remembered, Jim Root also has a guitar he ordered from Gibson and never opened… I wonder what that guitar looks like.
My experience is some sellers arent able to take some good pictures for their items
My father in laws 75 Les Paul has very similar wear/corrosion. It was left in its case in not so great/moist conditions at one point. This is definitely the same situation, Austin.
That guitar *sounded* fun to play. If I had that, I think I'd work on a spidey rock opera/concept album or even new versions of cartoon theme songs. X-Men from the nineties had that killer tune I'm sure we all remember!
Dunna nah nah NAH nuh nuh
That thing friggin' rips!
Great find and story Mr Trogly. I love videos like this. Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘
I'm super happy he is keeping it for his personal collection. It's not even mine and it made me giddy!!!
I must have missed something in your assay, how do you know if the maple is flame maple under the decal?
He said "Too bad there's not a flame top because it would show on the exposed edges."
Hey, when do you think your museum will be good to go?
private ambassador tours are already running. No ETA on public offering at this time
troglysguitarshow.com/museum-tour/
10:21 HAHA that a 10mm socket for a volume knob!?! How awesome would that be!!! And nice placement... Trog - if you are not an automotive person - a 10mm socket is the one size no one can ever find when they need it. Memes about that didn't start showing up till long after this guitar was produced. Love the show!
This is so cool! I gotta ask though, does the wrap tail bridge impact the tone vs. a regular Les Paul bridge? And if so, could that be why this guitar sounds raunchier than expected?
No
It affects the feel, but wouldn't affect the tone that much
@@ChrisShortyAllen Good to know, thanks!
@@TrogGreat to know! I had been curious about the wrap tail bridges on Les Pauls. Would be cool to try one now that you mention the feel is different. Thanks as always Trogly! Appreciate all your great content and knowledge.
The second this video started I said to myself 'if he does not play nickleback I'll be pissed' I'm glad this came to its logical conclusion
It always kills me how Nitrocellulose finishes can just wreck guitars when left in their cases without any air circulation for a decade or two. All the more reason to actually play the instruments that we invest our love and money into.
And yet purists insist nitro is better than poly, I had a nitro guitar and was always worried about sweating on it and ruining the finish.
A signature Spider-Man bridge pickup 😂
This one is your JACKPOT man, I would always remember this one besides the Les Paul and the Snake Pit
It’s a “Spider-Bucker”
Nice find.
Strangest thing to me is that it sat unopened.
Surely even a collector would open to check?
A collector opened it instantly. Did you not see That?
I think this sat at the studios for 20+ years and was forgotten about. The seller was suspiciously close to headquarters.
@@Trog Maybe it grew spider legs and walked out of the storeroom to be released to the world 😄
The original seller probably kept it boxed because it's comic book related, comic collectors love their sealed editions, even if the seller looked sketchy not showing an actual picture of the instrument he probably didn't know how to sell a guitar but had comics experience.
Fun episode! I’m assuming you may be in Atlanta from the flyover footage while you were playing!
That is such an amazing backstory and obviously worth that gamble. It certainly paid off. I can imagine the smile when opening the case.
Gems can still turn up. Keep the hunt on Trogly.
Parker should have built one🙂
This is a keeper. I’m not a Spider-Man fan but that guitar is good to go.
How did you clean the Gold HW? Thinking of replating the strap locks in gold?
much cheaper to just replace. I don't plan on modifying this one as I know the full story
@@Trog You sir are a lucky man! This thing is just a WOW piece! Love it! Congrats!
@@Trog Watch repair channels do their own gold re-plating. It doesn't look like it needs loads of specialist kit. Definitely cheaper/easier to replace them. The original ones don't look too bad after a clean. Maybe would be cool to restore what it came fitted with, though.
@@rockinrob2004as a chemistry nerd, re-plating is a genuinely fun easy and fascinating process. 2nd favorite thing I ever did in lab class right after figuring out what chemicals gave Fireworks their colors
Gibson should put the spider decal on the widow series…that would’ve kicked it up a notch!!
Were the humbuckets modified/ reproduced for the 1967 pickup? That’s when the original Spider-Man cartoon came out
J. Jonah Jameson: I want photos of Spider-Man! I want guitars of Spider-man!
I WANNA KNOW WHAT THAT PICKUP IS, PETER! DON'T COME BACK UNTIL YOU FIND OUT! 😂
Fantastic story and guitar ! Thank you !
Is it normal for a Gibson to leave the factory with the truss rod in that condition?
out of the custom shop - yes. Way more common than you'd like to think!
@Trog thank you for the reply! I just bought a 2021 Les Paul like new but was wondering about the truss rod.
I’m glad you picked this up as well. Thoroughly enjoyed today’s content! 😀
So what do these usually go for then? Would help to know how good of a deal he got.
Look them up
This is so cool! Just recently I was at good will, and I picked up a Dr. Pepper mountain bike, not thinking anything about it, after further research all I could find on it was a for sale post for an identical bike, claiming their aunt won it in a contest and put it in her garage! Needless to say it was a well spent 45$
I officially have a new holy grail guitar. Not the Spiderman... the Yahoo Explorer. It's ridiculous and I love it.
Nice! Great luck 👍! Speaking of cartoons/fiction themed guitars, I really wish they'd give us a Rusty Cuyler Signature Explorer 🤘🤘
How do I get a t shirt?
Awesome Love these kinds of guitars
I am surprised that a guitar went through the post office or a shipping company and arrived in one piece.
cool linux notification sound at the very beginning
The back of that guitar is weird. Ive never seen a gibson that wasnt sanded smooth. Just slightly more smooth than the pickup cavity. Its hard for me to believe it is a gibson, they got bubbles under the graffic and I thought those wrap-around tail pieces were only installed on Jr. models. That finish is bad from front to back, top to bottom, well the headstock is cool. It should be stamped "second", "Third", and maybe "Forth". I dont know if its true but ive heard if an employee really wanted a certain model they could get it discounted by messing up the finish cause they were givin first opportunity to buy the "Seconds" and it would work out to half price with there employee discount
Gibson uses the Beanie Baby business plan.
Great find Austin..
That guitar sounds good 👍 Early 2000s I've been saying that
Killer deal on an early 2000's Custom Shop Les Paul!
Did he say dont keep guitars in their cases? Ive never heard that?
The case is a very safe space for a guitar... but when the finish is still brand new and "off gassing" it might not be the safest place to leave it sealed for 20 years. A fully cured finish... yup, you're good. Be careful of guitars with celluoid - they off gas in a dangerous way!
what is wrong where the body and fretboard meet at 5:15 crappy gibson at it's best
Pretty cool it's got a wraptail bridge
Wouldn’t restringing and fixing all the problems lower the value? You had everything even the outer box. I would think leaving it alone would make it more valuable. But I’m not sure.
If it was a sealed box, wouldn't the guitar box be in a bigger box and sealed with the brown paper tape?
Had i seen this on the internet I’d have never paid more than $50.
Of course I know nothing about guitars.
perfect song to play on the guitar! Thangs Trogly!
The bridge pickup sounds like Dirty Fingers xD
If that bridge pickup was a mistake, Gibson should start making them. That thing sounds great with dirt.
So guitar six was not in box 6.. of 9?
It would be interesting to contact Columbia pics or perhaps the seller to see if these were all given out at an event or ??
Part of the provenance is knowing whose been in possession all this time and when it changed hands. Perhaps sitting in a closet at Columbia pictures and squirred away by a staffer?
Nice but still leaves questions unanswered. Gibson should replace those corroded parts for you!
I honestly thing you should feel bad about how you treated that guy. Having his listing taken down then massively low balling the guy isn't cool.
Honestly a LOT about how this guy conducts business is suspect. In another video he buys a guitar for $15k and immediately lists it for sale and MOCKS his first offer of $20k. He basically laughs it off. Cringe at best.
@@davidfaustino4476 and he can’t play, lol.
