"It's vintage Coach all the way baby." My feelings exactly! Have you watched Tanner Leatherstein's channel? He is a great source of info on leather as he takes apart all kinds of bags and explains the quality, cost per materials and more. He himself is a trained leather worker. Great video!
"live your most luxurious life within your budget" now that's a great tag line Autumn👍 Appreciate that you had various leather examples to show us. Well done.
As of late, the price of vintage Coach bags have sure sky rocketed. Wish I would have shopped them preloved several years ago! Informative video - thanks.
YEEEES! Those of us who are familiar with Coach vintage KNEW!😂😜 This was SO well done, Autumn.👏🏽👏🏽 Thank you for allowing us to "geek out" along with you as you deep dive into all of this. THOROUGHLY enjoyed this video!
I'm geeking out on all this leather knowledge! I love my vintage Coach bag (and Coach in general). My ex husband bought it for me in 1987 and now it's vintage and just as gorgeous as ever!
I was told Coach's Gloved-Tanned leather is a special process that's similar to the process used in making and conditioning a baseball glove. Like a baseball glove, the leather gets softer and my flexible over time. This explains why vintage Coach bags hold such great leather qualties.
Very concise and well researched. Thanks for the information. It would have taken far too much time to learn this on my own. Thanks for doing the heavy lifting.
"It's vintage Coach all the way baby!" Absolutely LOVE this and agree, Autumn! My vintage Coach bags don't compare to anything else I own. I would also love to know the process for glovetanned leather, especially how they did it in the past vs now. Maybe they will see this video and share some of the process with us all! 👀❤️❤️
I have a completely different perspective on the subject because of you, thank you for expanding my awareness on this and being so captivating at the same time
Autumn, I love your chanel and your handbags. Don't take it personally, but I would like for you to experiment with your sunglasses. I think you would look amazing in a honey color shade.
Great informative video. I think Coach has fabulous leather and I have had every designer leather good. It certainly holds its own against the big boys! I love you Bonnie cashin bag you showed at the end. Definitely hard to find!
Thank you. I lucked out on finding that courier bag in such great shape but I also payed up for it. ;) It's my second most expensive (in terms of what I paid) Coach bag!
Autumn, so glad your video popped up on my phone. Lost you shortly after your move to Oregon. I'm a handbag lover and really enjoyed this info, am also a vintage Coach fan.
Thank you for the info! I learned a little about leather from a former boss I had. She knew her stuff! We worked in a store. Let’s say a woman came in with a leather jacket. I’d be all dreamy about it. She’d say “it’s junk leather”. Then she’d explain why. She taught me all about Coach and Dooney. This was way back in the early 90s. …….. Where I live now they had a tannery. It closed before I moved here. Apparently it had to shut down because they let all the leather dye go into the creek which lead to Lake Erie here in NYS. You hear endless stories about the tannery and the glue factory next to it. …… I have watched videos by a leather guy, can’t remember his name. He will take a purse apart, mostly high end, and explain if it’s quality or junk. Keep on teaching us! ❤️
I also often wonder what the material of the handbags is actually made of. Often the coating and paint is so thick that you can no longer see the leather underneath. I also find the question of how the bag is made interesting. I watched some videos of handbags being produced. I was disappointed at how much glue, and other materials are used for reinforcement (bonded leather, paper, cardboard, plastic?). This makes me want to cut the bags apart like Tanner Leatherstein. (Sometimes his videos are too fast). Wouldn't it be nice if the companies showed us exactly how the bag is made? Thank you for your interesting video! Your handbag collection is amazing!
still many questions unanswered but one thing for sure hermes, chanel and the like sell their leather goods at exorbitant prices when you can get the same quality from other brands for a much much less price. i bought an 8x6 inches full grain smooth leather bag from a local tannery in my country, very good quality, and it costs 128 us dollars only if converted from the local currency.
I look forward to all your videos. I learn so much good info from you. Thanks for all your hard work. I'm a Coach girl and I miss them using the old gloved tanned leather.
I think you just opened Pandora’s box on leathers! Great primer and such good information about a (maybe purposefully) confusing area. Vintage coach is seriously good leather.
Excellent video - prompted me to take a second look at all my Coach and Dooney and Bourke bags that I purchased in the early ’80s and ’90s - they are little gems now 😁 You would not believe the styles -leather quality and metal accessories on a vintage Dooney and Bourke - excellent compared to the shabby bags they make today - which look old-fashioned and poorly made! I am giving the luxury bags a rest and pulling out vintage 😊
Great video Autumn! No one has ever been able to figure out what “glovetanned leather” actually is. I do remember reading long ago that Coach developed a technique to make leather goods with leather that will break in like a baseball glove, hence the term “glovetanned leather”.
I own both Hermes and Coach and I agree! I live in my couch bags tho I own Hermes bags. At the very least they are on par! Especially 90s to 2000s coach leather.
Coach leather is the bomb. Also their cleaning for you is so great. I use that service from Coach and well worth it Have a beautiful day Ty very informative channel I love watching ❤
This was a great introduction to all the intricacies of leather. This took a lot of work to dig through all of the available information and to weed out a lot of the nonsense. It definitely shows in the quality of this video! Thank you so much for sharing this with us (and all the eyecandy) and have a lovely weekend!
Dooney and Bourke was known back in the day for their All Weather Leather bags and their Pebble leather but now they have their Florentine leather line of bags.
Hey there, Autumn. Another master class video that I find very fascinating. Your teaching roots really shine in these videos. Thanks so much for sharing!
Keep in mind that Hermes used to make wonderfull saddles and still do for Versailles Equestrian Theatre. They have worked closely with craftsmen all over the world. They also use the 'saddle stitch'for their bags and their selection for leather is very strict. Both brands stand for quality and craftmanship 💗
So informative. Thank you for all the research! I really enjoyed this leather education. And yes, there are a lot of unanswered questions and ambiguities (which is likely intentional on the part of various brands), but one thing is really clear to me after watching - it's no wonder that after becoming a huge fan of Coach glovetanned leather in the mid 1980s, and continuing to collect bags ever since, nothing has ever been as good, as beautiful or as durable for me as those original Coach bags.
"ALL Weather Leather" (AWL) by Dooney and Bourke, which was a very special naturally "shrunken" leather (same as Henry's). I'm not sure if their current AWL is processed exactly the same as it was decades ago, but it's still advertised as "shrunken" with an aniline finish.

👋🏾👋🏿👋🏼Hey There Autumn, these videos are truly quenching my thirst to be educated about Coach and different types of leathers. Thank You. thank you So Much Autumn I think I get the new suede rouge 39 my SA said do get it as we can not clean it and I thing it most expensive rouge 39 it $1, 142 so we see what do you thinK? thanks for help Autumn
Is that the peanut color suede bag? I haven't seen it in person but the photos look beautiful. The rogue bags have been done in suede before. You might look at the preloved market to see what else is available and what the prices are before deciding which to purchase.
Excellent video it answered a lot of questions I had. I was recently looking at FLORENTINE LEATHER by dooney and burke and pebbled leather, and they appear to be better leather than coach, but not that stylish plus the bags are heavier.
@@AutumnBeckman thank you but the tanner leatherstein dude just tested a dooney and burke all weather leather bag and you would be shocked! I recently got a new bag and coin purse from that brand Now i need a florentine bag. 😃
I have soooo many bags I haven't shown you guys yet including nearly 100 Coach bags, most of which I purchased to use in my Coach video series, restore, then resell.
Excellent video - so much good info. I totally agree with you, I think Coach puts out some of the best leather on the market. But I do love the LV vachetta.
Thank you for sharing this is very good information. Do you have a recommendation for cleaning and conditioning product for leather and canvas handbags? Thank you
Vintage Coach leather is the best I’ve ever experienced, problem is you have to a body builder to carry one of those bags comfortably. 😜I’m exaggerating but they are crazy heavy, even before you put anything in them. I still love them though. I am TEAM COACH, have been since I was 14.

Autumn-could you tell te difference between suede and unbuckle from an image? I can’t.
Glad you enjoyed. Yes, Coach is fabulous. :)

Re:My Abusive Father Died || Complicated Experience with Death of an Abusive Parent
I think anyone who is dealing with being in a toxic relationship, or not realising that they are in a toxic one needs to watch this. My condolences for the memories of your father that had a positive contribution. Family can be the hardest to truly distance yourself from, especially when you've grown up with them being part of your life. My experience that really resonated with your story is the people that I have let into my life, really unconditionally, but disrespectfully exploit my empathy and generosity. It took me a while for them to get to my breaking point, and I did exactly what you did, to just burn that bridge altogether. They still linger and oftentimes I would get a message about how they missed me, but it always carried a conditional request of some sort, be it asking for my time, money or a safe environment. I learned to channel that and let them serve as a reminder why I need to keep my distance. I don't think you were worried about your father's occasional taunts of bumper sticker messages and the creepy voicemails, I think they helped served as a reminder why he no longer deserves your respect.

Re: This video
Your videos are always so relatable and I always need to tell myself to watch it until the end before rambling in the comments of things you might have missed because you're always so thorough with your research!! Box leather isn't actually exclusive to Hermès, Celine and Chloé, Dior have all used this in their collections. Another fun fact about the "graining" is that, natural grains are a result of the shrinking process when drying from the wet state, hence why the hide is also supple is the more it shrinks, the more it's scrunched up revealing the textural and characteristics of the skin. That is also why Box leather is so coveted because the skin has to be near blemish free during and post processing as each time it is 'ironed' the process has a chance to scuff, mark or unevenly colour the leather.
So another leather that wasn't mentioned by Hermès is the Barènia, which were used for their saddles, and their first ever leather was untreated, vegetable tanned calfskin leather produced in the town of Barr in the northeastern part of France, and the reason why it's called Barènia.
I think all leathers are now by-products due to the movement for fashion houses to achieve sustainability. Even with the exotics, which is why they have to all carry a CITES certification when sold to a consumer. At least, that's the goal of Animal welfare and ethics.
I love Loewe leathers, it is an understated brand that has been around as long as Hermès, and their leathers are also quite notably luxurious. Although they haven't branded their own leather yet, you can see that it's not a two minute craft.

Did you mention Saffiano leather ? It's my least favorite! I would like to know more about it and why they call it leather.
I did. I don't like it either. It's leather because the base is leather. It's then pigmented and coated and the texture is added.
@AutumnBeckman Thank you! I must have missed you talking about it. BTW, I enjoy your channel very much! You're one of the few UA-cam channels about handbags that my husband will watch with me. Keep up the good work! 😊

thank you So Much Autumn I think I get the new suede rouge 39 my SA said do get it as we can not clean it and I thing it most expensive rouge 39 it $1, 142 so we see what do you thinK? thanks for help Autumn
Is that the peanut color suede bag? I haven't seen it in person but the photos look beautiful. The rogue bags have been done in suede before. You might look at the preloved market to see what else is available and what the prices are before deciding which to purchase.
@@AutumnBeckman yes it the Peanut color thanks for help love all your Videos
Zermatt is brand name for tannery Hass, it is chrome tanned, semi aniline, corrected leather
I like this. It’s an education in leather ❤
Do you sell the handbag collection tracker notebook?
I believe buffed leather is same as nubuck, buffering or sanding is process that creates nubuck.
Crazy Horse is waxed nubuck
Thanks for adding your knowledge through these comments. I appreciate it. :)
Thank you so much for this great series. Appreciate it!
Thank you. :)
Excellent video it answered a lot of questions I had. I was recently looking at FLORENTINE LEATHER by dooney and burke and pebbled leather, and they appear to be better leather than coach, but not that stylish plus the bags are heavier.
Their Florentine leather appears to be vegetable tanned and aniline dyed. Given the weight it might be full grain. It's beautiful.
@@AutumnBeckman thank you but the tanner leatherstein dude just tested a dooney and burke all weather leather bag and you would be shocked! I recently got a new bag and coin purse from that brand Now i need a florentine bag. 😃
I haven't seen it yet but let me guess...subpar leather base with heavy coating of pigment and plastic. That's how you'd make a leather "all weather."
@@AutumnBeckman Actually no, He was quite impressed and the torture he put that bag through was pretty amazing!
Omg I was looking for a video like this
Glad I could be of service. ;)
i so love this video, it is such a diverse world out there in terminology, but do they mean the same thing. fasinating a thousand thumbs up
Thank you. :)
I love vintage coach leather. They don't make them like they used to...
😍 I see bags in this video that I don't think you have shown us before!!
I have soooo many bags I haven't shown you guys yet including nearly 100 Coach bags, most of which I purchased to use in my Coach video series, restore, then resell.
I love your videos! I always learn so much!
Great to hear. Thank you. :)
Excellent video - so much good info. I totally agree with you, I think Coach puts out some of the best leather on the market. But I do love the LV vachetta.
Thank you. :)
Hi, Coach Glove tanned leather is tanned by chrome. not vegetable leather.
Great information. Love the history.
Thank you. :)
Another interesting and informative video, thanks Autumn 💕
Thank you. :)
Great video. Thank you for all your research.
Thank you. :)
Thank you for sharing this is very good information. Do you have a recommendation for cleaning and conditioning product for leather and canvas handbags? Thank you
Not yet but I will soon. I'll be filming a video about that this weekend.
Vintage Coach leather is the best I’ve ever experienced, problem is you have to a body builder to carry one of those bags comfortably. 😜I’m exaggerating but they are crazy heavy, even before you put anything in them. I still love them though. I am TEAM COACH, have been since I was 14.
