You are right, during the early seventies(70's) the overhead transmission was already 500KV and since then not that much progress in this area until China started 1000kV underwater transmission line. There were some 800Kv lines(overhead) in other place around the world.
China is very proactive in every big task for a purpose-to provide for the people and also share its expertise with other country. Very commendable and noble. Rise China, the world loves you.
UHV is the NEXT frontier of Energy System/Integration . Power plants are BUILD far from Populated areas for obvious reasons. But with Environment considerations...Nuclear Plants are required . Solar , Wind , Hydro are JUST not sufficient to met DEMANDS. UHV ..... needs lots of R&D . And CHINA has been the for front of it. Congratulations .... CHINA !!!

Go ahead China. But remember not to be as UK and US. To play with the life of other nations.
Thankfully, China has their own capability and technology to build something like this. Imagine that your country needs it and you can't build or afford it, you are going to keel over it. Just take India as an example. Virtually, everything has to be imported or built by some western countries. I am not saying that India isn't capable but just pointing out the obvious truth.
