I’m a female pistol instructor, I always warn my female students to never wear low cut tops, or open toe shoes. When I was n the army, iI had a damn lefty battle buddy who’s 5.56 shell managed to drop down my vest into my shirt and firmly place its hot self in between my not so small girls. I had a burn on each one that was a perfect casing lol. I remember the initial instinct to do what those ladies did but such panic is quickly turned to logic and just dislodged it when I was able to safely do so. Remember ladies, burnt boobs only heal if the bearer is alive to heal them! Dress smart and wear a ball cap, I find it helps at indoor ranges when brass bounces off the walls to have a cap brim to help cover our brass gaps

And another one (during a different range session) that found itself resting on my eye-pro against my eyebrow. Both those li'l baastids burned like an M-Effer! Thankfully, I had the presence of mind both times to set my firearm down on the table, still facing downrange before doing the hot-brass dance right there in my lane, lol!

I didn’t even flinch, I just finished my mag (thank the gods it was a timed event that I was practicing for, so it only took a few seconds) and as soon as my gun was back on the bench, my hand went down my shirt. The size of his eyes when I pulled it out while cussing was hilarious! 😂 he didn’t even see it go down my top because he was on stopwatch duty and he was shocked that I didn’t stop earlier to remove the brass from my brass gap. 😂 I was just kind of used to it at that point. It stung, but whatever. Every sport has its risks.

Of course hot brass went into her bra, but she kept the gun down range, set it down on the table, THEN started digging around in her bra. She understood why I told her not to wear a low cut shirt. But I was proud she listened about the range rules and followed them. This was about 8 years ago and she has fully become embraced in gun culture.

The hot brass down the chest is a very common issue. Happened with my sister on her first time at the range to train so she could get her CPL, we had shot for around 30 min before it happened.
HOWEVER, prior to even leaving the house, we spent almost 2 hours practicing safety, trigger discipline, malfunction clearing etc. And the result? when she got hot brass down her chest, she calmly placed the pistol on the bench, down range with finger off trigger. THEN frantically tried to retrieve the brass lmao

Just found your site, and have been enjoying the Darwin Awards. So, in earlier videos you talk about catastrophic failure differences between semi-auto and bolt action. This one is pre-internet era and not caught on film. My late wife (1955-2020 cancer) grew up on a working ranch in Arizona. Her dad was a WWII vet who "liberated" quite a few firearms from European locations during his time with Patton's Army Group. I was looking at getting her a new mountain weight 30-06 for Pronghorn hunting. Her dad said "Don't waste your money, I have just the thing". The "thing" was a WWI French Berdan Primer (rim fire) 7mm Label (sp?) bolt-action rifle, which he did his own reloading for. After function testing (unloaded), we took it to the range to check the accuracy (sans scope). Ever be in one of those situations where the inner voice says "I should not take this any further"? In this case, when trying to chamber a round (one hand fed at a time) we could not get any of the rounds to battery and bolt to seat fully (using same force as with a normal, modern bolt action firearm). It was 75-years old. So we took it back to dad. He thought we were idiots, but nicely took to his shop to check so that he could confirm we were idiots. Yeah, see where this is going? He went to slam the bolt home, failed to seat fully, slam fired, ejected the bolt rearward and took half of his right ear off. At Xmas, wife got a new Ruger S/S Synthetic Stock Mountain Weight for wet, late season hunts. And dad got sh*tty reconstructive surgery.

Two years ago I took all of my daughters and nieces to the range to celebrate Fathers Day. I taught them gun handling before hand in my living room with no live ammo in the house. Only snap caps to teach clearing the chamber. For their first time on the line they each got ONE bullet to let them experience the recoil without fear of a dropped gun, etc. Luckily, my youngest daughter advised them all against anything low cut. It was a great time that they've been talking about ever since and we're going again this year.

    • @jeromethiel4323
      @jeromethiel4323 6 місяців тому +2

.22 rifles are amazing for a teaching tool. They aren't loud, the recoil is mild to non existent. And depending on the rifle, single shot without user intervention (i have a pump .22 for example). Great way to introduce people, especially small ones, to firearms. Work your way up from there.
I have always been a proponent that every shooter should own a .22 rifle. Cheap to feed, and great to learn good habits on. The cheap means you can practice on the cheap (very important, practice), and you can concentrate on marksmanship without worrying about recoil, etc. That and snap caps. Have someone randomly put a snap cap in your magazine, and if you flinch when firing the snap cap, that is a sure sign that you are anticipating the recoil. Which kills accuracy.

I will always remember a firearms instructor I had when I lived in Florida. He taught that if you are shooting ceter mass at a target closing on you and nothing is happening, they either have on body armor or are on drugs. Drop point of aim to the hips and remove their mobility.
Doesn't matter how much armor is on the torso or how many drugs are in the system, you cannot walk on a shattered pelvis.
He also taught that (I forget exact numbers) statically speaking I t takes 5 rounds to stop an aggressive target but in high stress you will miss 1 out of 5 shots so best practice would be to empty the mag and you'll hit enough times to stop the threat.

Poor girl fired the gun, couldn't control the recoil, and it auto-sprayed like 20 rounds of 9mm in about a second all over the place, hitting the RSO standing beside her. Obviously the part of him getting hit was edited out, because he took idk how many rounds to the face. It wasn't the little girl's fault, it was the RSO's fault 100%. I'm not saying it isn't still tragic. 12:23 there was a case several years ago... I want to say in either Montana or Missouri... where a woman visiting some family in America went out to the range with them where she was handed a fully loaded loaded 500 magnum and had this type of accidental discharge except that it did swing all the way around and the second shot hit her in a way that ended her life. So you're right... "It do happen" (lesson to learn, don't hand them the ultra magnum until they're ready, and don't load more than 1 chamber until they're comfortable with the recoil.)

We “trained” on our Dad’s antique revolver into the hillside out on our ranch til it was spitting so much shrapnel it had to be retired. We used his bolt action rifle & had a wonderful time til we ran out of ammo & had to find jobs to replace the ammo. We weren’t yet teens but we all had hunter safety courses. Hope those classes are still available to kids. We learned lots of things as little kids like open your mouth in an echoey building when you are practicing inside. I hope kids get a chance to safely & respectfully have a chance to learn & practice & enjoy.

My worst incident with hot brass was when I was firing a pistol from the gun shop downstairs in their range. Most of the time, the brass bounced off of my forehead. One time, it fell somewhat short...right through a gap in my glasses and onto the lower eyelid of one eye. I had the presence of mind to keep the muzzle pointed down range and set it down ASAP. My father then dropped the magazine and cleared the chamber while I removed the brass from between my glasses and my eyelid. That is why I wear eye protection over my glasses to this day. That incident happened about 40 years ago; I still remember it vividly.
Three cheers for dads who emphasize the four fundamental rules of firearms safety from the start.

I remember my dad showing me the ropes on a break action 12 gauge, I broke open the action, and only the right shell ejected, and went directly down my old beat tank top where it fell down to just below my chest. The plastic caught my shit and the brass wedged flush up against my skin.
I don't believe my dad was ever so proud in all my days when I got the other shell free, handed him the gun, and lifted my shirt. Didn't leave a scar, which would have been cool, but it did burn me pretty good lmao.

A friend of mine came up with a fake medal when we were in high school. He called it the Lead Star of Stupidity. I further improved this award by designing a Darwin Device, which is affixed to the award when the recipient also wins the Darwin Award during the same act which leads to their citation for the Lead Star. These people definitely deserve awards.
