Just from listening to this, you can tell Peter was always looking to experiment and add to his craft. He certainly improved like a fine wine. This is edgy good stuff. The Great Peter Banks!
Impressive playing ! Many a YESfan dismisses his contribution to the bands early sound and musical foundation, but Peter set the bar very high; not to mention his solid harmonies.
A totally underrated guitarist. It was nice that Guitar Player magazine gave him props some years back by putting the first Yes album in their list of underrated guitar albums. If you listen to Steve Howe before he joined Yes and then after, you can clearly hear how he was influenced by Pete. Just listen to the little jazzy licks at the beginning of "Yours is no Disgrace"-totally something that Pete would play. Sad....
Howe's style was evident in Tomorrow! Nobody else was playing like him at that point. Everyone else wanted to be Clapton or Hendrix, preferably both! Howe's was always a more studied approach.
I loved Peter Banks guitar playing, however Steve Howe was not influenced by him, listen to the live recording made in 1967 with Steve Howe playing in the band Tomorrow, he is a true original, they might have pulled a few similar things out of the influences they had but are entirely different types of guitarist, Banks being more improvisational
This tune is actually about the shortcomings of the Yes "Union", the big tour that did not include him. "Shortcomings" was how he felt about his bandmates, though Peter still had love and respect from Jon, yet little to nothing from Squire and Bruford. Tony Kaye still cared as well and wished the best for Peter, but I don't believe they communicated in the last 3 years of Pete's life.
He told me, not in these exact words, he was adamant about being original to the point of not listening to other guitarists. And on another note, "Drama" was the only Yes album he really liked, after he got kicked out, which he was still ill about at the '98 Yestival!

Peter was so accessible by his fans.. What saddens me is I bet I could have flown to London and bought him lunch on any given Sunday.. Now he's gone..
