My father was a drunk who was always in and out of Jail/Prison until he was deported before I was 17. People forget about the toughness factor. It's so important. I lost my first amateur fight simply because I didn't have the killer instinct and want to really fight.. was only after I realised what I was missing. Skills and passion were there. Just didn't have the kill or be killed attitude. I mistakenly took it as another sparring session and lost.. biggest regret ever..
I had a similar experience in judo competition ages ago. But there I was more afraid to let my dragon out, because the point was NOT to harm each other, but compete with sportsmanship. I still haven't fought in a ring, so I don't know how I'll react until I get hit for the first time. Thanks for sharing your experience, it's a good one for me to keep in mind.

I seem to remember a guy who climbed K2 saying something along those lines. 25% of the people who try to climb that mountain die in the process. Fortunately fighting is safer than that. I'm not interested in earning a world title, but I do want to earn a couple belts in kick boxing. I just want to be a amateur fighter in muy thai and bjj in my 40's, & 50's. For now I've earned a few metals in running marathons.

Yeah I'm too "experienced" (i refuse to say old ) to be a world champ at anything martial arts related I would say. I do have medals but would like to win a belt because belts look cool just saying lol
I am 48 and I don't care what anyone thinks! I will keep training hard, fighting and enjoying every bit of it. If I happen to win a belt or a few, I will know I earned them. I will not let other people's doubts of what I can or cannot do get in the way of that. It's mostly a mindset that makes the biggest difference. Do you agree Gabriel? Much respect to you and appreciate all your content. I follow you and study your videos religiously. I kept sending your videos to my coach and sparring partner and he is now a fan too! There are also legitimate organizations - events with divisions for older athletes. Master Class is a common name. Do not discount them as an avenue if you really want to try. Some of the large tournaments have point sparring, continuous kickboxing, contact and full contact rule events that you could work hard and win an amateur belt which would mean something. There are some smaller organizations but do not discount them as many fighters you have heard of may well have been through those organizations when getting started.
