    After struggling with a cold and fever, Lauren woke up one morning with her eyes fixed inward. She was dizzy, sick to her stomach and couldn't see well because of the double vision. One eye would drift back and forth. "It made me feel like I was the only one with this sickness," says Lauren.
    After no improvement the next two days, Lauren's mom, Kristina, brought her to the doctor to have the situation checked. Her doctor was worried it was seizure related but that was ruled out. The next step was to see a specialist at the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (CHaD). According to Dr. Erin Salcone, Lauren's Ophthalmologist at CHaD, "I was worried about her suppressing her vision in one eye -- that could end up as permanent vision loss. I told the family that we need her to come in and have the surgery done at the Outpatient Surgery Center ." Kristina said, "They made her feel special. It was her day."
    Dr. Salcone commented, "She seemed at ease, the nurses are wonderful working with children. I found that she took charge of the situation -- she asked the appropriate questions." Lauren remembers, "I decorated the mask they would use to put me to sleep and they gave me a heated blanket -- it was so warm!" Kristina said, "She wasn't scared at all, that was the important thing. As soon as she said, 'I have pain', immediately she had pain medicine -- and it was gone, immediately."
    Lauren had a great outcome and her vision is continuing to develop normally. After talking with Lauren's mom, she noted that from a parents' point of view, they were so impressed and felt comfortable taking their daughter down to Lebanon have the surgery. In Dr. Salcone's view, "The Outpatient Surgery Center is an ideal location for the surgeon and our patients and their families.
    The nursing staff is accustomed to working with these patients and the equipment is top-notch. The follow-up with the patients such as calling the next day as well as the overall attention to detail makes it a wonderful place to receive care." The Harris family feels that for anything they would need to have done on an outpatient basis, they would choose Dartmouth-Hitchcock and the Outpatient Surgery Center.

    I was diagnosed with strabismus when I was 7 I had to get a patch on my good eye to help my lazy eye(it ripped half my eyebrow off😭). I then later had to wear glasses with a patch on them or about 2 years. When I was 10 I had surgery to fix my estropia. It was the scariest day of my life and to anyone who has never had surgery it is rlly scary. The next thing I remember is being wheeled around on a hospital bed and spending the next couple of hours recovering. My eye was very sore but it was worth it.After having surgery my eye was very red sore and puffy and I couldn’t see out of it. I was given eye drops but it turns out I’m alergic to certain medical ingredients(yay😑). Now years later I have no problem with estropia but I am short sighted in my left eye(the one I didn’t have surgery on). I lost all my self confidence and worth during the ages of 7-10 because of bullying. If you know anyone with a squint eye, please support them as it is very stressful and hurtful to get bullied because of a medical condition. Anyway that’s my story of strabismus😄❤️

      My teachers noticed that I had strabismus at about the age of 7 or 8 (my eyes kept crossing and uncrossing ALL THE TIME, multiple times per minute - how had nobody noticed that earlier?), and I had to wear glasses and a patch to fix it. It's still fixed (I'm 40), and as long as I'm wide awake my eyesight is perfectly fine. However, when I get really sleepy, my eye muscles will relax and both eyes will go completely crossed. It seems that being crossed is still their natural position, and I'm just keeping them straight by a physical effort while I'm awake.
      Following from that, I noticed that if I try to read anything shortly after waking up, the letters and numbers just look like gibberish - literally, nothing more than random scribbles. I can see everything else perfectly clearly around them, but appear to be unable to resolve writing at all for about the first 10-15 seconds after I wake up. So when I doze off for a few minutes in the train station waiting room and then suddenly snap wide wake again wanting to know how long it is until my train arrives - other people see me just staring at the board like an idiot for about 15 seconds until I can make out the letters and numbers...! :D lol

    This young girl is very fortunate. When one of my eyes crossed, it was ignored. I took it upon myself to see an eye surgeon when I was 18. He said he would try surgery but was unsure of the outcome at my age. I was bullied in school and called Cockeyed Carey. It was a very long time ago when this happened to me. Still, I lost the vision in the eye that crossed (nearly 100%) and I see double all the time. Don't let your child go through what I did.

    I was born myopic and when i was around 11 I had a retinal detachment I realized it but being dumb kept quiet and let my eye slowly go lazy fast forward to 2020 I was diagnosed with a cataract and retinal detachment. One very long operation and the cataract is gone but still I see double double on my left eye , read the comments figured out it happens to lazy eyed people kinda was happy to know I'm not alone here , for someone always being confident throughout their life no matter what my eye has really somewhat affected my self esteem.

    Would this be called Alternating Esotropia? This sounds like the surgery that I had when I was 3 years old. My eyes were more like hers whereas I have a brother who had just a lazy eye so it was just one eye that he was using whereas I was using both but back and forth. It was successful though later on in life it doctor wondered if I could have done with the second surgery. When I had that checked by a doctor he said a second surgery at the stage I was at which was in my mid-30s would just result in double vision. I've been able to drive and basically do normal things. Looking back I think it affected my ability to judge distance in sports but being so into tennis retrained me to be able to do sports that particularly involved balls. There are a certain amount of times the effects have shown up but nothing serious or life-threatening. When I get tired one of my eye still wanders a bit and now I am 51. I am told I don't have much in the way of depth perception but the only affect I can see is that things appear Little Closer Than They are so that's good cuz then I don't end up running into things.😏 Some things may appear flat to me that are three dimensional but I'm so used to my vision that I see everything as being normal to me.

    it just sucks. people with normal eyes take it for granted. i guess we all do. my left eye does what it wants. sometimes in sometimes out, sometimes normal(yes i have tried excersises) . its very disparaging in todays social world. cause wherever u go someones want to take a picture. and i can tell you, having my eye turn in then out is worse. it just is. so imagine every time, every time, a third time, every time you take a picture not knowing how your eyes are gonna turn out. certainly, no pun intended. no surgery for me, i just "eye" the storm.

      Me too and I am thinking about surgery but I'm wondering if it will really work or if they will mess up and make me completely blind. I don't want to risk being blind and never seeing again. I just found out yesterday that people who have crossed eyes can do surgery to fix them and I was wondering if my lazy eye could be fixed too by surgery.

    • @elianna9722
      @elianna9722 7 років тому

      Missy I got surgery 2 months ago and I now have no lazy eye and my vision is better too! I only need reading glasses. You should do surgery of you can. It's totally worth it.
