  • In this video, I share my secret weapon for gardening in extreme heat and drought during heat waves and persistent hot weather! Hot weather and strong solar UV index can quickly damage plants and destroy your garden. This amazing garden tool can dramatically reduce or even eliminate garden heat stress and sun damage!
Climates with prolonged high heat and strong sunshine can quickly devastate gardens by burning foliage and killing flowers. Even brief heat waves can cause irreversible damage to your plants. The extreme evaporation caused by hot, sunny weather can dry out soil quickly, causing high water demand. Even mulching and drip irrigation may not be enough. Shade cloths are the answer! Available in various sizes and shade percentages, using shade cloth can protect foliage and flowers from sun and dramatically reduce evaporation so you can water less. In addition, using shade tarp can also protect garden vegetables and fruits from bird damage, insect damage and rain damage, too!
I recommend using a woven shade tarp with grommeted edges. These shade tarps are strong, effective and will last many years.

That high tunnel is awesome! QUESTION: during the rainy season, when you have torrential downpours for extended periods of time, did you have any problems with water pooling in your shade cloth before it had a chance to drain through? If it did pool, did the weight of the rain water that had accumulated in the pockets of the shade cloth rip any of the shade cloth? I look forward to your reply. I live in the Northeast and we also get torrential rains.

    • @christineedwards4865
      @christineedwards4865 Рік тому +1

@@CuriousinNY I don't know how much it would pool up in heavy rain, it's designed to let water pass through. Your main source of wear will probably be uv from sunlight. It would probably be a good idea to have it set up where you can easily remove it, because a strong wind during a storm could take it. Considering you live in the northeast, you probably don't need a shade cloth except for an occasional abnormally hot, dry period in summer, or if you wanted to grow things that like it cooler, like lettuce or cabbage, etc. If you have plants that look like they wilt on a hot sunny day, but look great on a cloudy one, shade cloth could help. If you make a hoop structure like MG's, try to get an idea of how the wind travels through that area, and set the structure so that wind can blow down the tunnel. Good air circulation is essential to help prevent fungal issues.

I totally agree about the shade cloth use. I use a 50% shade cloth over my tomato garden and it makes a huge difference where I live in SoCal with temps above 100 degrees during the summer months. It protects the flowers so that they can grow to be tomatoes, and also protects the tomatoes from sunburn. I would definitely recommend using shade cloth. Thanks for your video

Another great video, so thanks again! I wanted to offer a little tip regarding the insects.
I put up a few bug zappers near my garden to try to attract the pests away. Accidentally, I left a water bucket with soapy water about 20 feet from one of the zappers it was left over water from washing my car. I was shocked to see how many insects were dead in the bucket the next morning. I experimented by putting small containers water with a little dish soap around my garage, garden, and deck. You would not believe the number and types of bugs I am removing from my property nightly. It is most likely like taking a bucket of water out of the ocean, however, I did notice the myriad of little gnats that were flying between my car and truck every day and night, especially at dusk, were reduced dramatically. It really works well in South Eastern Pa. Try it and let me know if it works for you.

I have only gotten 4 tomatoes and 3 banana peppers to date. None of my squash produced, cukes flowered and dropped all the buds, potatoes got beautiful tops, and 1 baseball sized potato from 15 plants. I gardened for many years in Maine, successfully. Excellent video. This is an area that's not covered enough in gardening. The surface temperature of exposed bedding or mulch can be 30 to 40 degrees higher than ambient. A shade cloth can lower that temperature equal to the percent of light that it blocks. Using an inferred thermometer, I noticed my mulch reaching 135 degrees the other day with an 85-degree ambient outside, full sun. I was very surprised. This has really helped with the evaporation rate of water from my 24'' deep beds as well. I've done a lot of with shade clothes this year with excellent results. Thanks for posting!

It wasn't too late a recommendation for Perth, Australia! I followed the advice in your earlier video, covered most of my small garden in a shadecloth as you recommended, the plants did so much better and the entire garden was dramatically cooler. It also had the indirect benefit that I actually went out there and inspected the plants, even on the hottest days, rather than avoid it. That kind of light shadecloth is very easy to hang from any solid places that hooks can be hung from. Worked a treat. Thanks for the advice.

I also experimented with 40% black shade cloth last summer and it definitely worked for me too. The previous year I had a lot of heat damage on my tomato plants, but under the shade cloth the plants were thriving. But I had two problems with the shade cloth: 1) the plants and fruits grew and ripened slower, and 2) flavour was negatively impacted (my tomatoes turned out quite acidic, lacking in their normal sweetness). This makes sense because the shade cloth is blocking 40% of the UV light.
So my advice is to put the shade cloth up in a way that makes it easy to put it on and remove it. Because not every day will have damaging temperatures, and usually the mornings do not have damaging temperatures either (and actually have some of the best quality sunlight). So ideally you only want that shade cloth up to protect your plants when the temperatures reach damaging levels (in the afternoon on hot days).
Also, remember that the insect netting block even more UV rays, so if you use both it will be more like 50-60% shading effect.

    • @dustyflats3832

@@dustyflats3832 Yes, any design that allows you to easily pull or roll it on and off. Because last year I tied it to my structure, so I had to leave it on the whole time - even on fine or cloudy days - and you should not have shade cloth on on those days. Your tomatoes need as much sunlight as possible to grow and produce properly - it's just the heat that's the problem.

I’m in Southern Louisiana and my figs trees rust out, wrinkle up and give in by August due to the heat. We are typically very hot and humid and the figs just can’t handle the heat. Last week I hung shade cloth as a trial. I’ve got half of the figs in pots under the black 40% shade cloth and they are doing fantastic. Their growth continued and the leaves are all still green. The other half are in pots in full shade. They have some rust and seem to grow very slow in the extreme heat. I have three larger in-ground that were turning color and dropping all the leaves as they have each year, but after having shade cloth for one week, they have new green leaves and green growth forming. I think they would have done great if shaded earlier in the summer. Next year will be epic! I think constant 90 and above, full sun takes a toll on the fig trees.

Shade cloth is awesome! I have to use it to block the hot afternoon sun here in the Arizona low desert.
A few plants can handle our full sun, but very few.
If someone needs structure but can't build one like yours, I used 2 large Home Depot trellises spread out the length of shading needed. Rebar stakes secured the trellises into the ground. Ropes held the stakes to the trellises.
Then shade cloth was spread over each end of each trellis, secured with rope through the grommets.
Best to have the shade cloth about 5 feet or more in height so that it doesn't create an oven as it can do if it is spread directly over the plants.
For the most vulnerable plants, I use beach umbrellas in sturdy bases. But the bases and umbrella poles are secured by rebar stakes driven diagonally into the ground, resting up against both the base and the pole, and tied with rope.

I'd imagine it is mandatory where you live. It's also useful in the winter to cover deciduous trees that have a tendency to bud out before the last frost. It's great for late frost protection.

Shade is pretty critical here, but only for the afternoon sun. My plants seem to want morning sun, but not afternoon here. However our summer growing is somewhat limited. But west facing shade definitely helps.

Also, as a side-note: I am very happy to see you finally experiencing a dry summer and having it easier with your fungal issues! But, as you can see now, every climate has its own problems. Here in Cape Town we normally have hot and dry summers (we are a winter rainfall area), but along with that comes the problem of heat damage and pests that like warm and dry conditions (like spider mite, thrips, white flies, tomato fruit worms, etc.) and the disease they carry. So you can never win! lol
Also, container gardening is a nightmare if you have hot, dry summers. No matter how much you water and fertilise (which is A LOT), your plants will still suffer. Until you realise it's not worth it. I bought into the whole fabric pot movement, and bought large ones to grow my tomatoes in, but they are simply an Achilles heel if you have hot, dry summers. So I now bury the pots in my clay soil! Works much better then lol

After critters ransacked my little garden greenhouse all veg plants destroyed two years ago, I sent for a standing (3.5' tall x 2'' width x 4.5'length) cedar, raised garden bed. Inspired by your pvc hoop houses made a list. Now, I have a raised garden bed (on casters to move if I need) hoop house (a very mini-version of your BIG hoop houses) covered with chickenwire for even more protection. , I've kept plants in containers so far. Weather in Northern Indiana is acting extremely unpredictable. A nasty heatwave in late May (mid-90's) for several days--then a massive, sudden temperature drop. Overnight we went from nighttime temps of 68-72 degrees to 48-51 degrees. I was able to find my long, thin, clear former clothes underbed storage container and place it over my plants sitting in their pots down in the cedar garden bed, to protect them from sudden cold shock (which they seemed to love.) I brought the Sweet 100 cherry tomato plants also close to the house on the back porch, covered in plastic shopping bags. They've all grown quite a bit (I've up-potted them since then.) Same weather pattern is predicted this weekend--hot, thunderstorms Sunday--then massive temp drop again. Nighttime temps dropping back into low 50's next week. Plants are way too large for covering them up again. This time, now that I have my raised garden bed mini hoop house (inspired by MG) I can simply cover the entire garden easily with former greenhouse polyvinyl covering (with zipper vents still intact.) Hoping my garden will last much longer in our very short growing season--or, maybe plant cold weather lettuces & spinach when these plants are done for Autumn fresh salad veg's. Thanks for the inspiration!! Excited to see the results. Love That Dale--he's a 'Sweetie Boy.' 🍅🥒🥗❤🐕

It’s been so hot with extreme drought in WI. I’ve been using shade cloth for a few years. I found out that I Can grow radishes Under shade cloth!! The simplest thing to grow and we never could before. It was by accident that I planted under cloth this year-great discovery!😁. The sun is abnormally hot anymore. Thanks for idea on cage. We would need to place them a bit closer as the down pressure, IF it storms ever again, can really whip the fabric. We use wire and clamps to outer welded fence wire and inner T-posts. It’s a bit low, but I haven’t come up with a better system yet. Would like it if I could run it on cables to swing back on cooler days. Big wish. It doesn’t cover all of the garden and I have several. I was actually thinking of cutting wide strips to make it more manageable and as the sun advances it would move the shade.
I do know it makes a lot of difference in watering and growth.
No rain for over a month and 90s. Expecting at least some rain tonight through Monday I hope. If not the trees are already stressing and farmers are already cutting corn seedlings, ditches and marshes to feed livestock. It’s bad.

This year we are finally having normal rainfall totals due to El Nino and my garden is bursting at the seams. I'm sure you are just as thrilled by your successes as I am with mine. Newest site is where I demolished an old 35-foot shed, leaving half of the steel poles standing (shade cloth would be easily installed). Even with mature trees (thinned) I get hours of sunlight and good airflow. Tomatoes, cucumber melons, and summer squash doing well.

Something doesn't add up. What was the light blockage rating?
All other factors being equal a black surface will get hotter than a white surface in the sun. My black shade cloth was definitely hotter than my white and I could feel it, not only by touch, but by the radiative effect (like a radiative heater).
The other thing I prefer about white shade cloth is that the light is softer and more diffuse.
I found this on the internet just now:
*"According to the research conducted by Dr. Daniel H. Willits at North Carolina State University (NCSU), the common black, knitted shade cloth doesn’t reduce the internal temperature of the greenhouse structure. In contrast, it allows heat to radiate onto plants."*

      1. Drip irrigation
      2. Heavy mulching
      3. Shade cloth
If you employ those three things, you can be very successful. California's dry summers are excellent for plants, since rain is extremely destructive. If you can maintain irrigation and provide some sun relief, you can have incredible results. The product on the floor is weed barrier: ua-cam.com/video/V_I6XbZaLlo/v-deo.html
