Once a Black Sheep, the Porsche 912 Has Its Revenge

  • In 2012, Julien Borne’s father died suddenly. This event - in tandem with the birth of his daughter - caused Borne to pause and take stock of his own life and priorities, an episode of reflection that ultimately led him to a sad-looking 1967 Porsche 912 and a dilapidated house in the French countryside.
Borne had been racing in the French Supermoto series for years, so he was no stranger to risk but his decision to move into his grandparent’s long-vacant farmhouse in a village on the outskirts of Paris and devote himself to rebuilding classic Porsches nevertheless required a new level of gumption on his part.
Borne has since focused his energies on the Porsche 912, a car long dismissed by Porsche enthusiasts as being little more than a tarted up Volkswagen, a poor substitute for the more desirable 911. Yet, as Borne points out, this black sheep is beginning to get its revenge, slowly gaining adherents for its lightweight nimbleness and relative accessibility in a time when early 911s have appreciated beyond the reach of the average enthusiast. Indeed, the 912’s lack of pretense is at the heart of its appeal.
“The 912 is closer to a barbecue car than to a golf course car,” says Borne. “It’s not a car to show off, it’s a car to enjoy.”

I love my 1968 912! It was my Dad's and I am looking forward to restoring it with my son. Last year we started it for the first time in 10 years. Checked the oil, manually turned the over the motor to make sure it wasn't t seized, put in a new battery, fresh fuel, and she started on the first try. Indestructible!!!

This channel should have way more views and should be really popular because their work is always excellent and well done. Great audio and camera views, high definition, awesome stories with awesome cars and characters, it's an overall great channel! I know we all love these new and modern cars, but to see the classics in this grade of quality, it's actually pretty amazing. You guys deserve a TV show or something.

I always thought of the 912 as the dim younger brother. We had customers bring them in and I'd have an automatic prejudice against the car, as it was the "economy" Porsche. Having watched this video, I realize I was looking at things the wrong way. I'd never considered weight savings before. Now I want one of these, with modern ignition and fuel delivery. That would be a hoot!

It is unfortunate that many 911 owners will not or cannot recognize anything beyond the 911 even though the ultimate success of the Porsche company relied on several other models along its journey to becoming the great car manufacturer that it is today… Very enjoyable video and glad to see more of Porsche's other efforts...

    Petrolicious Goodness as always.....
Brought back memories as a college student.... Looked at buying one to upgrade from my tired 81 vw rabbit....
it was a 1967 912 also.... it was between that and a slightly used Mk1 GTI ....
Ended up with the GTi, for the simple reason that the replacement parts (brake rotors, engine parts, etc) were
super expensive.... Price was about the same as the GTI... could have 'bought it' but couldn't have fixed it
when it broke.. =) Ahhhh the late 80's ....
Still love the 912's though !

***** I have been following your videos for almost 1.5 years and I must (again) compliment the video choreography. This Porsche 912 clip was shot in a very different style from your previous videos, and I find it was a successful prototype. The quick cuts, sound effects and subtle music create a great progressive atmosphere compared to the slick and perfect style in some of your previous Porsche videos. Sometimes, I felt that the videos were almost too alike in regards to style, too slick, too similar and "poetic" (you know, the big words those owners sometimes use to describe their hobby).
I am impressed how successful you pulled off this video to move forward or at least to leave the path of proven success. It's still Petrolicious, but it's a rougher, more experimental style. I thoroughly enjoyed this experiment and I'm very much looking forward to future efforts. Not necessarily in the same style as this 912 video, but in again different, new experimental styles.
There are many great car channels on UA-cam, but Petrolicious is really the only one that canvasses the emotional component of car enthusiasm in a beautifully artistic composition of pictures and sounds that finally do justice to it.
tl/dr version: I love your channel so, so much, and you constantly try to improve yourself. Go, Petrolicious, go!

A Porsche to me starts of more like a blank canvas then the character of the owner, the colour chosen, the mods, the customisations, the amount of owners it may have been through and all the years spent with it all come together to paint the true art of each one.

That is one sweet ride you have there Julien, good for you for taking on the 912. Years ago I had the opportunity to buy a nice condition 356 but didn't. Of course I wish I had now. As for the early shape 911 or 912s they are really are the best looking of them all. Far too many sadly have been butchered to make them look like later models.

I remember a time, not so long a go - the mid 90s, when a driveable 912 could be had for $2000. A good friend of mine had one in high school. We once fit six people inside that little Porsche. One summer we rebuilt the engine. And to think tat today they are again revered Porsches!

    • @yakadee1
      @yakadee1 9 років тому +1

Agreed, the cars were considered valueless. It seems like "not so long ago" but the mid 90's was 20 years ago. Plenty of people watching this video are probably under 20 yrs old, so it was a lifetime ago for them.

LMMFAO!!!!! I just got a Irish green 912 Targa hard window to restore over time from my uncle, and I can tell you lots about what's wrong and bad about them... But...!!!!!!!!!! This beauty is like Julien said, 'a car to be enjoyed', driving and WORKING on it, because I know I will NEVER get it perfect for long... Something will always fail (unless you replace almost everything). The car is a bit of a 'lemon' overall; AWESOME car, don't get me wrong; and Juliens' is the BEST condition one I've ever seen!!!!! (I worked and qualified as a technician at Porsche). I believe (and I might be wrong) that it was never a 'perfect condition, daily, trustworthy driver'. This is a car for a mechanical minded and handy person with a passion for doing everything, by hand if possible (sort of like raising a child... LOL Not by hitting, just so we're clear :P ). You can fix (teach the child) 1 thing today which will affect the outcome of something else tomorrow, or drive less homogeneous (give the child a less stable environment) and it might get upset and break down. All I know is I love this car :D
