Build up stamina I guess, it was painful when I played for extended periods of time but I actually got used to it, also my hands are massive so that probably helped a bit. I can speak on this because I actually played Barre chords instead of power chords for years because I just didn’t know the difference. And I played with my strap low because I found it improved my stamina for down picking, especially for Master of Puppets. I play with my strap higher now but I still resort to lowering my strap if my band’s playing heavier stuff.
I play punk bass so naturally my strap is low (body hits my knee) but I find it wayyy more comfortable for my picking hand and there isn’t much restriction on my fretting hand, the thing I try to do is angle my neck super high so I can access the whole fretboard, all in all it looks epic and feels great
no one's ever really addressed guitar strap adjustment. But its actually very important, because it is a vital element in stage performance.Great presentation on this video 👍
I normally adjust my strap very high because you can transfer your playing from sitting position, of course you need to practice standing up and play but this way it just easier for me.
I can't believe I had to scroll down so far to see this comment - I was looking for this! Make it the same place on your body that it sits when you're sitting and you're golden 🤷♂️
I play mostly jazz and I can confirm my bass is at chest level. It's very comfortable and chill with all the other different techniques for the plucking hand... Do I look like a nerd? Yes. Do I get called out for it? Yes. Do I get a sore back and arms? No. I see that as a big win :-)
I play primarily jazz and flamenco, but flamenco is pretty similar to jazz in terms of holding. Only difference is guitar shape. I don’t hold it THAT high when playing jazz though. Makes chords that push for thumb more difficult.
@@mokhan8832I feel you bro, i'm 6 3 with 77 inch wingspan and when I go low my right hand feels good but left wrist start to cramp. When I go high it's the other way around. I play mostly sitting but have to find my sweet spot standing
@@szczypi0rek Bro crazy how that works right? I definitely think it’s because we’re use to sitting down when practicing. If you see my old vid it kinda demonstrates how I sit. I definitely need to practice standing more and gradually making adjustments at the position where its most comfortable for my picking hand because i experienced a lot of strain trying to stand last year.
@@mokhan8832 youre right, recently I started to practice more standing. Need to put these hands into a lil bit uncomfortable positions. Keep rocking, i like the zakk wylde's solo cover
i 100% of the time use jazz height. i dont feel like destroying my wrist by playing a solo. also to the last strap height - i would check where my left hand naturally goes instead of the right, because as i said previously i dont feel like destroying my wrist
I used to wear my strap high when I was new at guitar, but then I got better so I started wearing it low. Then I got better and I now wear it higher than ever.
Sit on a chair, rest your guitar on your thigh with a loosened guitar strap to it, adjust your strap until its not loose and is round your neck Stand up and check if the guitar stays in the same level with the strap on That’s perfect EZ W
I have plates in my arm that make it so much harder to change chords the higher my guitar is. I’m not sure how others with plates do theirs but that’s what I’ve found
I'm going to start my journey as a guitar player now, I'm 21 and even though I'm late to this, I'll try my best and work hard for it. This tip wasn't what I was searching for but it's noted when I use a strap! Thank you!
Actually for me, having the guitar below my crotch is much more comfy than having it up high, my veins sort of jump around when strumming using the high strap, but i sacrifice ease of playing the higher notes.
The real way to play is the opposite of slung low. Have your guitar at chest height minimum and angle the neck as close to the ground as possible. I guess you guys aren't ready for that yet, but your kids are gonna love it.
I forgot about this kid. He use to pop up 24/7. It's been a couple of months, haha. I dont love him but i dont hate him. Ill always watch his shorts tho
I definitely look like a nerd when I play, but... I like to think my ability helps give me a pass...or at least they are nice enough to not laugh directly in my face.😂
I play bass. I have the body slung right at waist height and the headstock is always in my peripheral vision to my left. I haven't had any issues with this height and I believe I'm doing it right.
I adjust my strap so my guitar is where it would be relative to the rest of my body when I’m sitting, which is how I practice most of the time. It turns out, this happens to be why Tom Morello straps his guitar so high.
I used to get my balls broke growing up for playing high. But it was cool cause i could play faster than everybody else. Couple "well can you do this" in a crowd and that shit stopped 🤣
If you’re playing metal and not muting the high E with your kneecap you’re doing it wrong lol
except i play prog and i need to do stretches that are so wide it would break your wrists if your instrument was that low

*Janick Gers proceeds to hold the guitar up in the air and play simultaneously*
As a bassist I have it slung low because of just how the bass is built, I’m also 6’6 so that also helps
I like to keep my guitar low cause it's more comfortable for me to play that way. If it's too close to my chest it's hard to play

Comparing strap height to music genre is literally the musical equivalent to expecting everyone from one race to all be the same
realistically it depends on your arms, posture, and body, so if a “punk” height seems most comfortable for you, its what you should be using.
