We pay it either way. Tips are just currently easier to swallow for more people, as it hides the extra fees in the form of an "optional gift." Allowing the listed price for service to be lower.
People who work in these companies go in with the full understanding that they risk low pay on some days, but have the potential for major profits from more generous guests. The gamble is worth it for enough people that the companies can afford to replace anyone pushing for higher guaranteed pay.
Uber and other rideshare companies understand human psychology as it relates to money. If Uber raised the service fees to properly compensate drivers without tips, the price hike would result in more than half the customerbase boycotting them, meaning they would go from finally expecting to turn a profit this year, to going bankrupt overnight. The illusion of the payment being optional makes it easier to swallow, even though you end up paying the same on average either way.

@warhawk As an uber driver even accepting $4 for 3 hours has gotten me $50 not bad when youre in a pinch. As someone who has been wprking for uber for 5 years, they do pay hourly you dont see the rest until an hour after you end your shift. It always comes out to $23- $30 an hour for me. Ive never stole food and i stay constant. Tip baiting happens ALL the time so i just accept every order. I hate relying on tips but this is my source of income right now.i actually do something someone can do themselves. If someone is disabled ill go over and beyond to help, but someone who is simply lazy should pay more. Yeah. Uber eats needs to pay more too because even though i get that hourly $5 an hour still goes to gas.... My head lights. Tire accidents etc. Yes i get back in taxes.

Yeah I don’t get why people assume that every one using delivery apps are just lazy and won’t just for get food. For some people it’s made life so much easier but they can’t afford to pay so much in service fees then be expected to pay the same amount in a tip. Even sadder than tip baiting is people refusing orders because the tip isn’t enough. Which happens more than tip baiting. Some people need delivery and Uber should pay these people a proper amount and tipping shouldn’t be necessary. People would still be greedy and want extra tips unfortunately but it would become less of a trend to just not take orders with low or no tips. Tipping culture has because insane and we shouldn’t be fighting each other we should be fighting the corporations who aren’t paying enough.

It’s either leaving my food in the wrong place, giving the wrong order, missing an item, etc. I’ve seen good drivers working in fast food. when you tell them something is unavailable they call the customer. majority of drivers don’t and will bring you one out of the 6 things you ordered instead of telling you so you can get a damn refund or get something else. Restaurants are at fault too nothing is ever correct but then here comes Uber refusing to give you your money back even if you have proof. I’m so done with ordering food. If 2$ is all you can afford thats ok- honestly I would expect most people dont tip anything with walmart deliveries because they actually get a "real wage" vs the people we normally would tip(food delivery drivers, waitresses, bartenders), many peoples financials suck right now especially with how poorly the USA sets up people on disability.

He starts yelling at me and cursing while he's moving it then kicks the bag on his way out, tearing a small hole in it. I don't know what kind of bad day he was having but who yells at a person in a wheelchair for needing a little assistance? It's rude to put items against the door anyway, disabled or not. They try to text me for the pin when security is telling them "you can't leave that in the lobby." I’m disabled, and sometimes if I don’t order delivery, I don’t eat. Like, I have just enough energy to get from bed to the door and back and then consume the food; I don’t even have the extra energy for the two minutes it will take to pour a bowl of cereal. Plus, sometimes if you’ve been bedridden all day, what you really need is a hot, full meal to help with energy levels, but FORGET the 10 minutes it would take to even make a bowl of ramen with a fried egg. It just is t happening.
Delivery (for food, groceries, prescriptions, etc) are vital services for those of us who sometimes (or always) have trouble leaving our houses. And we know we have to pay extra for these things - one of the many things that makes dealing with a disability expensive.

Complaining about something that's been a part of this particular service industry is bs.
Americans Know Why they're tipping. It's not to supplement low pay. It's to reward a person for good/great service. So, when you get good service, F'n Tip. If you get great service, Tip A Little More.
The people in the service industry aren't complaining about tips because they know they can, and Do, make More If customers tip according to the service they provide.
You're all about The Experience, right? Well, That's what they're providing -- a great experience. So, fold that into the price.
The better the experience, the more you tip. If the service wasn't that great, be honest with the server, throw a buck or two on the table, and don't go back.
But, there are certain groups of Americans that do not want to tip and so are now blaming the hiring company instead of just Paying for the Service and Experience they get. They want great service, for nothing.
Just Pay the servers, delivery drivers, and whomever else is providing you a great experience and stop acting like you don't know what's up.
And using "corporate greed" ideology as an excuse for stealing back a promised tip because you're running a game to, Again, get something for nothing, is the weakest, lowest, greediest move of all.

Unfortunately we can't see if you write that on your instructions, all we see is payout and distance so most drivers will decline the $3 base pay order for the $10 order that will come up after rejecting the $3 one. I also have 'gambled' on base pay orders to see if I would get cash, and it only happens less than 1% of the time.

But what happens to your job when no one orders take out …less hours less money for you because now why one is getting it themself and you need a new job. It’s like pizza, delivery or takeout? They already have to pay a 6$ delivery fee, tips are great but you are still getting paid hourly to go on that delivery tip or not, people complain “pick it up yourself then if you can’t tip” but then when it’s all carry outs now they are mad again because we have to cut hours due to there being NO deliveries to take because it’s to expensive to pay 10$ tip and 6$ delivery fee. If you tip less then 10$ on ANY order then trust me the workers are talking shit and not gunna take to kindly to you and that’s just SAD

Tip is for excellent service not default work. Why are they there if not to write down my order and bring my food. They nod and smile and pretend to be friendly. Then get mad at me cause they can't pay rent with their low paycheck? Um who is supposed to pay you me or your boss?

Hun it’s not stingy a $15 chipotle burrito delivered with fees can be $25 easy. On top of that add tip. Paying 40-100% up charge and expecting to pay more on top of it is the issue. The corporation not paying a fair portion to the workers that make it run is the issue. Quit blaming customers for crappy employee structures. Uber got paid big time and pays poverty fees to the drivers. Place your anger towards the corporations. Stop supporting businesses that treat workers like this.

Especially cause the drivers really don’t see that delivery fee. When I do DoorDash it’s a set amount per mileage they just launched their per hour recently. But it could be $2.75 to go across town. And I know some of the restaurant fees are more than that. At least with Grubhub you get a predetermined mileage pay.

As a driver, I've seen people do this. It is appreciated. Just remember though, tips should never be an expectation by the worker. It should always be a nice surprise when it happens. The reason for this, is that it makes it harder for employers to pay less per hour. Think of it this way. A driver earns lets say an average of $2.00 per hour in tips, but the employer, knowing this, pays the driver $2.00 per hour below minimum wage. Who is really ending up with that tip you gave?
