  • Tip baiting is the practice of adding a tip when ordering on apps like Uber Eats and Instacart but removing the tip after receiving the delivery. Is this really happening to drivers and what should you do if you experience this when driving?

True as it says $13.00 and something once you decide to take the trip. Pick up the order at the restaurant then start the trip and drop off the order as once complete the trip as following the note orders or photo the order to leave note on where you left the order. Then once complete the order the trip was a $6.00 or something trip as you don't keep the $13.00 order as once shown. Then expect a tip as if you get a tip from the customer? As it's deceiving low ball orders as probably no tips at all on the UberEats app. Tell you it is a cold gig economy business on low ball orders of upsets 😡 as it is not fair as they sure won't reimburse you on bridge toll for going to Richmond to Vallejo for a $16.00 as I been declining trips and some I do take but I try not to to cross the bridge going to Vallejo. As I live in the Bay Area doing UberEats.

customer perspective: I absolutely hate tipping before hand. up until I had too, I used postmates because they didn't share the tip amount and allowed me to tip for good service after. There is a rating system for a reason, and drivers should be allowed to rate poorly for a bad tip. showing you potential earnings defeats that system. It sucks to learn that when postmates switched to ubereats software, this is the reason I've had a hard time getting a driver. Unfortunately until uber eats changes this... I will be projecting 25% moving forward and subtracting from that tip, instead of tipping 15% and upping the tip when things go right. Don't blame the customer... blame your boss' software.

As a customer, it's partially Uber's fault. When I place the order, I enter my tip on the final screen before submitting. Let's say it's $5. Then AFTER the delivery, I always get a screen asking "Add a 18% tip for Bob?" --- this makes it seem like they're asking if I want to add to my initial tip -- and that answer is no -- so I have to unselect the 18% tip they pre-select (ex. $8) and put it to $0 -- not realizing the few times I've done this, that it changes the total tip to $0. It's a very dumb misleading screen which Uber would probably argue they're trying to get more tips for their drivers, but it's making it worse.

      @insethurdle88 3 роки тому +1

I dont agree with this yes it's to make it more promising to the customer but it's also to give perspective on what you should make as a driver. Let's be honest if you look at the fairs as a customer and it's to high you won't use uber eats as much putting a lower demand vs supply of total deliveries, however if the customer sees it as a tip they have the perception its going directly to the driver which means they will put more money into tips vs for a fair even though uber makes very little off the trip fares anyway and most goes to the driver consumers don't know this though (look at your higher fare trips I bet you there's no tip at all I get $7 deliveries go back and look and it was only in fares so no tip). Also if they didn't put the tip in the fare drivers wouldn't take it seeing a $5 delivery and not knowing if you'll get a tip or not or how much.

Tip baiting is definitely a problem. This is unacceptable and Ubereats should not allow customers the option to do this. If anything, a customer should only be allowed to edit their tip if they’re trying to add more money to the tip. The fact that Uber allows customers to remove their tip completely is very distasteful behavior from the company. Important to note that they have an hour FROM THE MOMENT you swipe the “Delivery Complete” tab (if it’s a Hand to Customer order) or click “Delivered” after taking the photo for the Contactless Delivery orders. I have been timing it and it’s been on like clockwork.
I would say from personal experience, I’ve only been tip baited 3 times since I started delivering out in Boise, and I keep a mental note of those customers. I deliver to many of the same people, and I remember the crossroads and restaurant ordered. Is it always accurate? No. This is much easier to do on DoorDash (which there is no risk of tip baiting, but I’ll keep track of the pin in cases of unruly/rude customers - lots you can do). However, I haven’t delivered to any of those 3 offenders after the fact and the other 99.9% of customers have been awesome. I find more often that I receive more than what was originally quoted - not sure if this is due to the “Trip Supplement” (you see this a lot with the “Order and Pay” orders when you sit at the restaurant for 20-30+ mins), but I’m sure there have been a lot that just want to show their appreciation.
Just my two cents. Happy driving, all!

For example if the trip is short I figure Uber will pay $2.50, but if the expected pay is $10.50 then I know there is a good chance the tip will be some amount over $8 even though the customer could also have tipped exactly $8.

Uber steals drivers tips too. I had a passenger who told me that he would tip me 20 bucks and he literally did it in front of my eyes, I saw it and was so happy. But you guessed it, when I finished the ride I checked my earnings for the ride, Uber gave me $5 and kept $15. I couldn't believe it so I decided to check earnings the next day, maybe they'd correct it. But still it stayed the same. If you don't get tips, it's a good guess Uber is skimming your tips. The guy tipped me because he had a friend in my car that was drunk and disturbing me, asking for water, then I had to stop the car because she had vertigo and needed to vomit, she took my gallon of water and I had to get out the car to get my cleaning container to hand it to her just in case she vomited in my car. So at the end, the rider decided to show me the tipping process on his app. I saw the whole thing, but uber stole my tip.

I order through uber eats and wondering if i would like to tip my driver's in cash when they arrive how can i do that best? This way they don't have to claim it as income (the same as your waitress/ waiter at a restaurant) I don't want to put zero for the tip on the app or I'll end up with cold food. We usually tip a minimum of 20% but often more even especially in bad weather, late night or busy times. If i enter the tip in the app and then give them cash instead will it keep stats on me or reflect poorly if i change the tip online to zero because of the cash tip? I'm just curious i guess what opinions are on that and what the options are?
What I've been doing lately is putting about 15% tip on app with the order and then in the notes I ask them to message or call me when they arrive for an extra tip and when they get there i tip them extra. I've had a few driver's i didn't feel deserved any extra tip but i felt obligated after putting it in the notes. I feel like there needs to be a happy medium between driver's expecting certain tip amounts and people being cheap.

Option 3: Create a Blacklist of customers that do this.
    1) take a screenshot shot of order when you've "started" the trip so it shows the customers name and location.
2)at the end of your day, go through the orders and see who didn't tip or tip baited, and match those up with the screen shots you took.
3)enter the name and location into your "blacklist"
4)every order you accept, first check the name and remember the approximate location it's going to and look it up to see if it's in your blacklist. If it is... cancel it. If not... deliver it.
    5)repeat process
Better to be burned once then multiple times. If they're doing it now, they'll continue to do it. And don't be fooled...they know EXACTLY what they're doing and why.

I agree with you! Now it is a big problem!! I have already made many orders when the customer significantly reduced the tip or even removed it, and there was no reason for that, I made the delivery quickly and accurately. I think customers do this on purpose so that their order is delivered quickly, knowing that they can then reduce the tip. This is a very bad feature in Uber eats! I really do not like it! I think on Uber Eats is tip baiting themselves not the customer. I think they way the "expect included tip" works its a percentage based on the amount the customer spent on their order. Uber does it to lure us in to accepting these orders, so they can decrease wait times. The reason why we don't always get the tip is because the customer never actually applied the tip to being with, that's just something Uber just led us to believe. After their delivery they get then asked if they would like to give a tip and there are a few options, 10%, 15%, and 20%. With 10% being the "expected tip". At least that's my opinion I could be wrong.
