- Whenever there's a successful sequel, it brings hope back into the world. Ori and the Will of the Wisps is a fantastic game that takes cues from other Metroidvania games and builds upon itself. With tons of shards to collect to change your gameplay and even introducing swordplay, a cue from Hollow Knight. Visually the game is stunning like Ori and the Blind Forest, with a great soundtrack to accompany you throughout it. Let's jump into my Ori and the Will of the Wisps review!

This game better get a award this year its so good. Not many games brings so much emotions
Naw. Way too many technical glitches
@@codewizard0 they'll be patched out for certain. Plenty of time before the game awards. And even with the technical issues, it's still one of the greatest games I've ever played. They aren't game breaking issues, just little hiccups, and the stuttering can be fixed with a simple game reboot. Itll be a hard contender.
@@Mark_Aaron I'm sorry but you don't get game of the year if I have to wait 10 seconds for the frame rate to resume
@@codewizard0 I didnt say itll get game of the year and neither did the original post. Itll probably get best platformer. Also other nominations like audio, art direction, and so on. And don't tell me technical issues stops a game from qualifying. Jump force got nominated last year, Sea of Thieves the year before, and so on. The problems are easy fixes and once dealt with, the games a true masterpiece.
By the way, it runs near perfectly on PC aside from the achievement glitches.
@@codewizard0 Yeah. All game of the year games of past r perfect technical achievements.
"God of war crashed multiple times.
Sekiro dropped framerates here and there"
See how dumb your statement is.
No you cant.Need unbiased brain to do that.
The ending truly broke me. Such a bittersweet conclusion I couldn't help myself but cry for the entire duration of the end cutscene and credits.
Pretty much my thoughts exactly.
Wasn't as sad as the first one imo.
@@CoryTheSimmons I think Shriek's story is depressing as hell. Born alone, born different, got rejected his entire life, lived alone and died alone without knowing love or friendship. Died in the wings of his sculpture parents.
RIght there with you. That ending, god. So many tears. So sad, so beautiful.
the fact ori worked so hard to fix their word htne they said fuck you you're a tree now and you cant move
Honestly, if it wasn’t for an audio glitch that caused there to be a loud BZZT sound almost every time it loaded a cutscene, I’d say it’s a masterpiece (which means that in a few weeks when they patch out all the kinks, it will be).
Haven't encountered this one, but I had massive framerate issues and sometimes freezes on the one s. Not enough to wear this great game down, hope they fix it
Yeah, I had some framerate drops and freezes as well while playing on PC (more specifically through Game Pass, although I don't know if that would have an impact on anything). Definitely says a lot about the game that despite having a fair bit of technical issues, I still couldn't put it down.
@@razbuten just shows that gameplay is king
I've had the same audio issue but it happens like every ~5 mins whether in a cutscene or not. Pretty weird but I still love the heck out of the game
Honestly some of these technical issues somewhat undermined my experience but I cant stress on how much I adore almost every other aspect Will of the Wisps has to offer.
I played Ori and the Blind forest definitive edition then this game back to back it was incredible, can't wait to see what they do next.
InMaTeofDeath same they were both breathtaking
After playing this one, I went back and played Ori and the Blind Forest on hard mode since I never did that and now I'm replaying Ori and the Will of the Wisps again on hard and yeah, I must say it is quite the experience. Playing them back to back is just amazing and makes them both all the better
I did the same. I just finished Will of the Wisps about 10 minutes ago. It's damn near perfect. Wow.
i hope they'll do another ori game,
but i don't really think, because of the ending of will of the wisps... BUT i can be wrong bc there's a last detail in the final cinematic that can lead to another game....who knows....
@@sirfox_ Moon Studios confirmed Ori and the Will of the Wisps will be the last Ori game. They're currently working on an unannounced action RPG.

Tbh that moment was sadder than anything else in both ori games.
Ya I went to check and expected some sad stuff but damn
I actually teared up, my god.

@@Spartan-sz7km i thought he would like, say how distraught he was or something but nope. he just straight up died
That broke my heart in so many pieces when I saw him with them... I was hoping so much that when I finish the game and it's all good again, they'll show that the restored light had reached the silent wood and all the petrified creatures have returned to life.. Welp, so much for that happy ending, this game is so brutal sometimes :'(
It just got nominated for THREE awards this year! Best Score/Music, Best Art Direction, and Best Action/Adventure. I honestly hope it wins all three, this game needs all the love and recognition the world can give it!
The Music is like 11/10, it’s so good I have a physical and emotional reaction whenever I hear it.

I wish this could come to Switch. It is a masterpiece like first one
Yea, me too
They are going to need some time to compress all the 4K goodness into that console. Probably when that definitive edition come out.

I trust the developers will fix the bugs, because they've got a masterpiece here with just a bit more polish.
Yeah it was all (almost) patched day 1
The April patch just basically foxed all of the audio bugs and most of the freezing issues.
A year later and it's not close to be polished on xbox or switch 😢
@@justinpalmier I just got the switch version and I haven't encountered a single problem sooooo....... yea happy days. It's been a while though
@@justinpalmier it ran perfect for me 1440p/165hz on pc, just finished it the other day
The only “glitches” I’ve had is frequent freezes and occasionally crashes
Neofire 25 same- what device do you use to play it
I use xbox 1 s
Racheal Gardner I was also on Xbox 1 S, although thinking about it there was one other glitch. At the final interactive cutscene (not going to say when) Ori was flipped 90 degrees at the start of the scene (It was quite rare)
Played on my PC. No glitches at all. Did find a bug but I feel it was a bad luck thing. Died as I killed a boss. Made it weird.
@@Neofire25 Same here. I'm playing the Xbox One S version and some locations have very frequent freezes. It's not that annoying because the enemies freeze too, but I hope it gets patched. I'm enjoying it a lot but these things uighh. No glitches except that one and one crash
Played on a decent pc rig, had VERY small stutters (just barely enough to notice), and one crash.
I like that you admit the story touched you. I remember shouting "no, no, no" at the screen over Kuro's back story when we realise why she hates the light.
I've only just got will of the wisps and it's very hard... I have issues with my hands which makes complicated jump sequences and boss fights a real challenge (imagine sitting on your right hand until it goes dead, then trying to play)... but I have to say, loving it so far.
I thought for sure he would say, “This game is a Perfect Complete it, but right now, until all bugs are fixed, I give this game my Completionist rating of ‘finish it’.”
I'm thankful I got to experience this game on PC, since there were much, much fewer bugs for me.
@@Razor4884 Ya I don't think I had a single bug on my PC play through.
i fully agree, i didnt get achievements and got 2 big bugs that mean i can never 100% the game
Mine was fine for the most part, the audio buzzing in cutscenes really took me out of the immersion though. And it was horribly optimized. Mine kept jumping back and forth between 1 and 500fps. And the final 10 gorlek ore build glitched a bit. It wouldn't show up in the menu. And the game crashed Everytime I was trying to exit game
I think we all know that this game is good, great, even perfect. But all also know, just like the Completionist we can only review the game we have, not the game it will be. That is one the reasons I love the Completionist, he does not “have” to review a game as it comes out, but may wait until it is truly perfect, or close enough. Still, great episode as always, us fans will do whatever it takes to help you out.
This game is a masterpiece. The art, animations, music, gameplay, platforming, and the addition of a set of characters was SPECTACULAR!
Finished the game yesterday and I spent a large chunk of the night crying. Even now when I think of the ending I cry almost to the point I'm grieving the loss of someone, like my dad who died the year Ori came out and the funny thing is I'm not sure if these feelings will ever go away. I hope we see more of Ori's world at some point.
My condolences, man. Losing someone is never easy and it never really gets easier...we just have to cherish the memories and keep them alive in our hearts. Stay blessed
So sorry for your loss. I’m a huge fan of yours and you have been an inspiration.
I'm just amazed at how this was made with Unity
“... which is what you make the frickin Donald Trump game with!!” -Dunkey
WHAT!? I did not know that! Holy crap that is very impressive.
Every Brackeys subscriber: Ha,weird.
Hollow Knight is also a Unity game.
Unity is a fine and capable engine that seems very easy to build games with, which causes every schmuck to use it for lame games.
Listening to the soundtrack from this game so I could remix DKC2 in a similar style was an absolute pleasure. Seriously, Gareth Coker did a PHENOMENAL job with the OST and trying to do it justice was very challenging!!
Ayyyy it’s you!
Job well done, sir! Instantly recognizable and yet it feels like it belongs in this game as well!
Holy crap the ending to this game. I still can’t get it out of my head. I beat the game two days ago
Trusty
I beat it last night. I cried and you know what? I’m not ashamed. This game punches you in the feels hard but it’s so beautiful

*"When A Sequel Works, Especially A Sequel To A Beloved Piece Of Animation, It's A Magical Feeling. Every Bit Of Warmth And Nostalgia That You Already Carry For All These Characters Are Used In Service Of An Exciting New Story."*
You can say that again...every time I watch a good sequel to an animated movie I always cry! 😭😭😭
God damn. Ori and the Blind Forest had me teary eyed, but Ori and the Will of the Wisps? That game’s ending had me break down. I caved in and that hadn’t happened to me in around 7 years. 7 years without a single tear, until I played these games. It’s amazing what a game like this can do to you.
Coming in from the switch in 2023, the "TOO MUCH MUST FREEZE" still happens, the map/shards/inventory pull up still need a moment to think, and Ori's cutscene of him getting after getting slammed into the ground by Shriek ran smoothly (a bug like that is funny to me). Glad to know now that the combat shrines actually reward Ori with more shard slots; forever ago I encountered another video don't remember where that complained about there only being three slots and I've been trying to figure out how the slots expand.
I finished it yesterday, and spent a good 10 mins sitting on the couch afterwards in tears! Shrieks backstory stabbed the heart so hard just watching this now has the eyes welling up again. Loved it more than the first one, though that still has a place in the heart too. When I can think about playing it again without getting upset, i'm going back to find all the ore and cell bits and do as many of the shrine challenges as I can manage. Definitely recommend anyone play this game.
I still haven't played the first one. I own it, it's sittin' there in my steam list. I just need to move my mouse over to the application right now and click "play". My mouse is hovering over that button right now. Index finger of the right hand is lightly tapping the left mouse button.
I don't know what's going to hap
Don't cheat yourself, it's a fantastic game
Click it, you NEED to play both ori games
Dude, you gotta. Both Ori games are incredibly beautiful experiences; not just graphically, but on how they made me feel.
Started it, and I'm having a great time!
My one tip is that it takes some time for the game to really get into it's groove. At first it may feel a bit slow and linear, but when you get the double jump it really opens up.
Prepare for the feel trains
Both Ori games are masterpieces and the best games ever made, imo. I am sooooooooooooo jealous of anyone who’s just discovering Ori. The storylines touched my soul, the music and art blew me away. The abilities and movement are flawless and how each one was acquired was ingenious and satisfying with each new Spirit Tree discovered. I haven’t found even one game since, that lives up to Ori! I’d pay a lot to have another installment to play. The Moon Studios team are an incredible, talented force in the gaming industry and I wish them all the very best in their future endeavors.
The colors in this game are freaking beautiful
Like each scene can be a portrait
I laughed way more than I should have when he called Nibel “nibble”
This game was so incredible... I don't think I've ever been affected by anything in any game quite like the Moki family quest. And the ending is so uniquely bittersweet and beautiful.
Shriek dying alone in the wings of her parents was a powerful, yet regretful ending for myself. Shriek was a masterclass in the redemption story up until the ending which completely undermined the entire build-up and tone of the series. It felt like a giant middle-finger by the game developers. By subverting our expectations and letting Shriek die alone, scared, and defeated we as the players were supposed to be reflective to the harsh realities of life I was left completely unfulfilled. The entire journey of Ori is focused on transformation and moving forward even though all seems hopeless.
We were given that hopelessness through the antagonist Shriek, countless NPCs recount how "Shriek is lost, and no longer can find the light" even though the entire theme and tone of the story is to bring light back to a hopeless world. In the end, Shriek wanted to be saved and we as the player could do nothing about it but watch as the scared creature huddled into the wings of her dead mother that died trying to protect her.
I don't dislike the premise that "some are beyond saving" I dislike it because Shriek wasn't beyond saving. Shriek wanted to be saved and we as Ori were not strong enough to do so. The ending did nothing but ruin the entire story for me and make me angry at the game developers for destroying a beautiful redemption story that could have been and juxtaposing it with this edgy teenager ending that left many of us Ori fans completely without direction or reason to replay an otherwise wonderful game.
I disagree. Shriek may have needed saving, but she wouldn't accept or desire it. She was stuck with herself and her own misery. Some people are just like that.
I didn't know how to feel after completing the quest where a moki returns to his home. I know for a fact that only 2 moki were there when I first visited, so going back and seeing a 3rd added, man. Great game though 10/10
I feel like there is one thing that could be greatly improved: the presence of multiple endings.
I feel like the ending could have something tied to your sidequests and gorlek ore. For example, if you completed the hub, a different ending would happen, where Seir said something like "i've seen how attached you've gotten to this forest and to all of your friends you made here, so it would be better if you stayed" etc. The current ending just seems... A bit empty, unsatisfying.
LAME
I feel like the ending may lead to another sequel with Ku as the playable character
Ending was perfect, and would be annoying to do sidequests to get the perfect ending, also the ending was amazing, don't know what you're talking about
@@royolaniye6643 It could work as a non-canon ending for anyone who puts the time and effort in for it though.

I was waiting for this Completionist video and it didn't disappoint. This is the best kind of review it could've gotten and I felt the same love for the game as you did. Didn't have as much glitches and issues though, achievements popped late, but they all popped eventually. It's the best kind of sequel the first could've gotten and I fully agree on that its a must play, to me its a masterpiece, but can understand that with those glitches in its difficult to call it as such. The game is incredible, but I kind of hoped that the bosses could be slightly more challenging, with more combat scenarios to match the time trial escape ones. I played Hollow Knight and thoroughly enjoyed getting my ass kicked by the same boss 10+ times before finally learning its move sets, finding the right healing windows and the best charm loadouts. Ori on the other hand is more forgiving and and some bosses can be quite easily cheesed with the Spike ability(I literally zapped Shriek to death on my second try). Great game nonetheless, will be looking forward to any future DLCs.
That is frustrating,not challenging......
lol I used the shit out of the spike to finish bosses
@@BlackOpsPeppe Hey, Dark Souls is popular for a reason. Some people are into that kind of thing.
But you're right. "Better" doesn't require that you bang your head against a wall in frustration before you complete something.
Agreed...I started the PC version a few nights ago, but the audio glitches were too distracting to keep going. Once it is patched, I'll go back to it.
I spammed light burst through all the bosses.
I’d never played an Ori game before and only happened upon it because of some ads on Facebook that Microsoft was running.
I downloaded it on GamePass and honestly couldn’t put the controller down for hours at a time. The story was an emotional rollercoaster that really tugs at your heart strings. The game was immense fun - difficult but not so much so that I got fed up with dying so much and jacked it all in. With a little perseverance I completed the game with 100% of items unlocked.
Even though I got to play it for nothing through my subscription, oddly for me I also then went and bought the deluxe edition. It really had that much of an effect on me.
I think that this felt like it was actually a perfect game. I’m so glad I took the opportunity to play it and I really hope they make another!
Best episode in a while, outstanding work everyone!
I absolutely adored all the different locations, and how different they were from one another, yet all were beautiful.
Except for the freaking Mouldwood depths, that place gave me that “I want to throw my controller” feeling
Might just start playing this during the quarantine
Still not over how this game wasn’t even nominated for GOTY.
The whole "Ori copied Hollow Knight" complaint is dumb. Maybe they did, but who cares? It works, so it's great. The danger of copying is on the creator, not the user. If they don't make it feel different enough, or it feels like it's just a worse version, then they game won't do as well. But if the game is great with those copied elements then... we get another great game? I don't see the problem here.
I literally started playing this game because of your review. Now I’m SOBBING. THANKS. 😂😭

I feel after the last video, Jirard need it to play this game.
There is a feeling of mystery from the moment you're able to move Ori and explore these new areas. Love it! There is so many secrets and little hidden nooks, that areas stay fresh for a good part of the game.
I never want to see Ori with a beard again 😑
"I'm not looking forward doing a deathless run again."
- *Me doing the deathless, shardless, lightless, and speedrun achievements all in the same go* -
I think the real MVP is the backup save system they implemented in this sequel. Otherwise I wouldn't have even considered a deathless run. Oh, and I should mention as of 6/14/22, the only achievements that gave me trouble popping were the collectibles ones. But you just reload the save file, and they should pop immediately after loading in. The technical bugs I had(Especially with deathless run) was reloading a backup save, only to have the screen I was previously on remain, and ori to have disappeared. I couldn't move, but still access the menus. Very strange. But again, going to the main menu and reloading that way fixed everything. It's honestly still a 9/10 game for me. Very fun. Very fulfilling. Very Beautiful.
Let's go Jirard, we're with you!
Wow! What an incredible video. You guys outdid yourselves with this one. Loved it! Keep up the good work in these uncertain times
Love this game. Didn't expect to like it so much since the first one was good. But all the puzzles, combat, movement, side quests, and player freedom made it so much fun. Exploring and collecting felt so fluid. Never felt like a chore.
One of the rare games nowadays that actually feels like a sequel and major improvement.
Oh, one reference i got, the last map you buy in the back have one Stone Map used in the Ori and the Blind Forest
Finally, I've been waiting for this.
This game has officially got my girlfriend into real games. She was playing animal crossing pretty regularly, but I got her playing this a couple days ago and every time I turn on my Xbox this is the most recenteplayed title from her getting some time in before work. We spent the whole evening on the couch playing and had an awesome time. Really happy to have shared this in that way.
I don't remember encountering as many glitches as you described, maybe because I played the Steam version?
They got patched later in day 1
The only glitch I ever had was audio stuttering during scene changes (like when I enter a boss arena or start a combat shrine)
I did't even even know that this game had come out!
I loved the first one and just bought the second one because of this video.
Thank you Jirard!
the expend energy to get health was a thing in blind forest, its on the skill tree
In Blind Forest though, you had to make Spirit Links to get some health back, so I’m thankful that it’s now its own ability
Easy Fuly I was always spirit linking lol, can you not spirit link in will of the wisps?
I know the game took a lot of inspiration by Hollow knight but some of the mentions are kind of pushing it, as if only Hollow Knight and Ori 1 existed in the genre in the last 10-15 years which is far from true. And the aforementioned example of the healing spell that you need to offer magical energy for is not taken from Hollow Knight, it is literally what healing spells are in general - spend mana, recover health. I mean...really?
But I get why The Completionist took that approach. His vidoes' main point is to tell a good story, not to be perfectly accurate and correct. Using Hollow Knight and Ori's recognition to tell a good story here is understandable. Still, I am kind of unsatisfied as a big fan of both The Completionist and Metroidvanias.
@@1jidion no you can't. You get pretty generous checkpoints instead, which did take a moment for me to get used to
LD986 I’m guessing the difficulty you choose determines how often checkpoints are done?
I saw your last video, and I have been noticing that I haven’t been seeing your videos pop up like they used to. I always make sure to search for them to make sure you get the support you deserve. I love your videos, my friend - please keep doing what you’re doing.
I know the guy who did the art for this game, Jeremy Gritton. We're related on my mom's side of the family.
Tell him he did a fantastic job... If you get to see him that is.
Otherwise neeto if true
Not a completionist here, but I do enjoy these videos. I finished this game last night and now I'm going through the usual reviews, completionist and before you buy videos. I have to watch all these videos after finishing a game to avoid spoilers. I do finish games 100%, but the huge game backlog and life give me very little time to complete a lot of them. Both Ori games are on my top 20 because of how wonderful the stories are, but also the difficulty. These games are up there with the Metroid series for greatness.
A quote from my own playthrough -
"This game would be perfect, if it wasn't so shit" (referring to it's polish and optimizations)
I was bummed that it horribly lagged at Shriek's boss fight, but I plan to play it through again when everything is patched
also when I improve my GPU
Its been patched btw. (And you probably already knew that)
@@originalnameguy6964 I didn't know that. Thank God for that
the ability trees take the shape of the ability they grant
just a nice little detail
Hollow knight did not invent an npc giving you maps, did not invent boss fights, did not invent a combat system, did not invent a shard system...
Oh man I am literally turning on my Xbox to buy this game right now. Thanks for the great episode!
"minor technical hiccups"
You mean bugs that make the game unplayable and erase half of your saved data
Yeah, those ones
Yeah this sequel is basically a super metroid to metroid level jump. It’s insane
For anyone who happens to be watching this video in the far future, everyone was told to stay home and not go to work in order to avoid spreading Wuhan coronavirus-19. I hope we get a vaccine soon.
Open ending... I want an Ori 3... please Moon !
due to bugs i was only able to get 99%
i collected everything, did the shrines, the races and all of the sidequests but the spider area keeps staying at 98% and the first area stays at 99%.
also the full energy archievement wasn't unlocked eventhough i completed that as well.
is that a glitch/bug? will it get fixed? it's really frustrating!
oh, i had that problem too haha. by any chance, have you finished the hand to hand side quest? because if you haven't, odds are there's still some stray spirit orbs around.
I had the same issue for a while but I just scoured every inch of the areas that were only 99% and randomly they would update. Same issue with the achievements, though. That will probably be patched out at some point
@@bellaberry4624 yeah that was actually my favorit quest so it is a glitch and will solve itself hopefully
@@MugenSaint thanks man
Jirard sucks
Glad to see you're feeling better than you were in the last video man. keep being you and stay safe during all this man. Keep being you man screw what UA-cam is doing we are gonna be here to support you because we all love you man!
Ori and the Will of the Wisps didn’t *meet* expectations, it went FAAAAAR beyond expectations
I just played and finished this for the first time and just wow! What a game! Since I'm years late to the party they've had the time to fix any technical issues and so I experienced none of that. Loved both of the Ori games and I hope there will be more in this universe.
