    I don't think that he was afraid to be obsolete in the music industry...After all, he is the Grunge's grandfather...And so many bands never stopped to hail him as a major influence : Nirvana (of course), Sonic Youth, REM, Neal Casal, Howe Gelb (Giant Sand), Calexico and so on...

    Neil Young is a genius. Love his edgy, impossible to forget music of the late Eighties onward, as much as the wonderfully sweet songs like Harvest Moon we so loved in the 1970's. If listeners haven't checked out Neil's bio on sites like Wikipedia, do so. Well worth the read to understand the extent of Mr. Young's musical contribution.

    • @ladyblackstardust390
      @ladyblackstardust390 8 років тому

      +turtletwi - Neil was helping Cobain with his addictions. I believe he was scheduled to see him shortly after he chose to shuffle this mortal coil. What did he say in his suicide not that Neil wrote. Maybe it comforted Neil and fans to know Cobain made a lucid cognizant choice. But I sincerely doubt it. long term solution for a short problem.

    @adamwillow1 Neil Young has had a legendary career, there is no doubt he's more influential and at his peak a better songwriter than Kurt Cobain. He was basically the Bob Dylan of the 70s. Kurt Cobain frankly just wanted to be Neil Young.

    Verse 1
    I wish I could go back and save you from this world before you fell in the sand and washed up on the shore, and met your wrongs. But you're just too far gone.
    I could be your first and you can be my last, you could be the drink I will be your glass
    but follow your mind, cause your heart will waste your time
    Chorus
    You know you'll be on my mind tonight
    and ill be, waiting for the sun to rise
    just to see if I'm alive,
    but you just leave me

    In Kurt Cobain's suicide note he quoted a famous line from this song ... "It's better to burn out .... than to fade away" ... Kurt certainly optimized the phrase perhaps better than any rock star save "Keith Moon" or "John Bonham" ( Crazy Fucking Drummers!!!)
    .... reflecting upon this song It suddenly dawns on me that my own personal window 2 "Burn Out" passed me by a long time ago (I am 47) ... but I can feel the subtle effects of "Fading Away" ... and I understand the song better each day ...

    Neil was NOT the "Godfather of Grunge"; he was a hippy and that was the style then. He look wasn't calculated or planned, it was natural. It wasn't done to market him to a specific audience or to get cultural attention. It was how 99.99% of the rock/folk musicians looked and dressed. Unlike "grunge" bands, he did not express his disappointment in society by not using basic hygiene and common sense, but by his ingenious lyrical talent and intellectual points of view. It's quite a difference!

If our generation discovered Neil Young, CCR, Zep, Floyd, Hendrix, etc... what's saying the next won't? A lot of people from my father's generation doesn't think I'd understand records because I grew up with CDs. Age is silly, don't pay attention to it.

    It;s very sad because Kurt Cobain used words in this song in his suicide letter. I guess Neil Young had said that he was disturbed that his song would've caused Cobain to feel that way. Also, Young tried to reach out to Cobain in the days leading up to his death. It's really, really sad because I admire Layne Staley, Brad Knowell (SP?), of Sublime, and Kurt Cobain, but they had alot of issues that were expressed in their tunes and I feel sorry and I pray for others going through the same.

    Sorry bro I didn't know that he referenced this sentence to Neil Young. And for your second question, it has been supposed that Courtney didn't want the divorce. Also an interesting fact is that Kurt had 5 times the amount of heroin to kill someone in his body. Needless to say, he was not able to shoot himself.

  • @thewriter1008
    @thewriter1008 12 років тому

    @BarstoolBlues33 That's not really a hard statement to make. As much as the Nirvana fanboys want it, Cobain just wasn't a good lead guitarist or lyricist. His lyrics, from what I've heard, rarely amount to anything more than a bunch of thinly connected phrases and his guitar solos were just the vocal line repeated on an electric guitar.

  • @caldous22
    @caldous22 12 років тому

    @BlakeCobainMorrison Um... Sure. That's why Neil Young is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame not once, but twice? And that's not even for his work with CSNY. The only reason that loser Kurt has stayed so famous is because he swallowed a gun at the height of his over-hyped fame. If he'd stayed around, he would have washed up with the rest of the grunge bands and be a nobody now.

  • @swigs1984

    @kirkwood512 But it was still all these things you mentioned that he did, that lead to the birth of of Grunge music...hence the term Godfather. I wouldn't call Elvis Presley rock...but he's the King of rock, right...he inspired it...hence the loose and inaccurate terms. Neil wasn't Grunge..Elvis wasn't rock...but they were both visionaries that inspired each culture

    this music will live forever because it's not forgotten. singers now are so shallow that they are forgotten too quickly, excusing lady gaga (not that i listen to her, but who can forget a dress made out of meat). Nobody remembers any songs from 4, 5 years ago because it's all so meaningless.

    King [KUrT] is dead but not forgotten...it's a story about Jonny Rotten...Rotten Billy...
    oops...Sorry Sillary...
    Kurt purportedly stated "better to burn out"...cremation was not contemplated at time of expression? IF only Kurt was alive...world would be a better place for it...Peace!
    Awesome tune...

    I do believe he never gave a toss about that...He always wanted to produce the music he meant to play, nothing else...And the story with Johnny Rotten came from a dream he had at the times Punk Music was the new trend. Saw an interview where he mentionned that story.

    yeah, it was written in 78 when the sex pistols were huge and elvis had just died. So he was bassically saying the king, elvis, is dead but not forgotten, but rock is now the story of Johnny Rotten. He was afraid that he would become obsolete in the music industry due to the rise of punk music.
