  • The possibility of a Chords of Orion gig got me off my butt to do a real pedalboard build instead of just stringing effects together. In video, I discuss possible pedals and configurations. Help me out with your suggestions in the comments!!

      Hi Bill! Have you seen the G2 pedal switching system from GigRig (by Dan of That Pedal Show)? With the plethora of pedals and combinations you use, I think it might be useful to you. Thoughts?

      I have seen the G2 and will probably consider a switching system at some point if I end up doing more than one gig. It's somewhat overkill for the studio though.

      I would suggest a tuner with built in buffer (PolyTune 3 works great) and I would also suggest running the pitchfork before compression and distortion for better signal processing. Other than that the board looks amazing! Can’t wait to hear some samples!

    It's really funny that you want to build a pedalboard, because I was just thinking about doing the opposite! I've been using the same exact pedalboard for years to make my ambient songs, and I'm considering changing things up and using different combinations for every song - to get out of my patterns and my comfort zone. I really approve your choices, though I would never have any pedalboard without a Strymon El Capistan on it :)

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  6 років тому +3

      Hey Antoine! the only reason I am doing this right now is to have an easy to move setup for the gig i mentioned in the vid. Once that is over, the pedals will be migrating off the board back to the floor. So much easier to use different effects that way!

    Cool vid to see an ambient board design. This was super helpful and really interesting, thank you!
    Side note, CoO, I’m about the same age as you and I’m envious of your ability to sit on the floor, lotus position, nevermind being able to get there and back up easily. My knees are so shot, I’ve made my pedal spaces from small tables that sit next to me, to avoid getting on my knees. Only my volume and expression pedals are on the floor. It’s not super handy for throwing pedals on playing, but I’ve not gigged in a long time and my home studio is just for my own peace and enjoyment. You have taken very good care of yourself! Peace to you and continued good health 🙂

      Sorry to hear about the knees. I'ver got a couple of friends who suffered knee injuries when they were young, ended up in pain later, and then had knee replacements. Both guys say that it was life changing for them. All the best!!!!!

    Dear Bill,
    Of course all the pedals you have sounds great, they're definitely not cheap at all! I have a part of them, as the neunaber immerse and the timeline...
    i'm a BASS player and i love creating soundscapes and psychedelic abstract noises and music, but although i'm not i guitarist i suggest you could add :
    1) a modulation pedal after the ditto (let's say a chorus or phaser) and
    2) surely a different distortion\overdrive pedal, which could definitely enrich your choices and "Soundpastes"
    3) i think, considering also the amount of space left, you could add the lovely Sub'nUp ehx, even combined with the pitchfork, never close streets where you never walked...
    4) finally, according to me, you should try to add an envelope filter, or a Wah pedal. It's great going into the delay, and combined with distortions and overdrive (in my opinion the wah works better AFTER the OD, but there's an eternal debate on this point) gives you a stunning and unbelieveble opportunity to choice the pitch and the range of your harmonics, even getting stronger and louder than the original principal note or chord you were playing. Try to believe it!
    I also have for example, the freeze, and the microsynth of ehx and the whammy by digitech, but maybe you just don't like or need those pedals for your special ambient compositions.
    greetings from Rome,
    Fabio!

    For mine you can't go wrong with any of Strymon. My best "advice" would be keep it as simple as possible and still get the results you need. Some guys on youtube have pedalboards as big as a bathtub. I, personally would want a MIDI/software rig with 3 or 4 pedals that can give me any sound imaginable, but minimum wage kind of limits my options.

  • @guyac01
    @guyac01 6 років тому +4

    If it's a one-off gig and you've got all the dedicated PSUs you need, then probably better to go for an ad-hoc power solution... if, however, you want portability and a 'tidy' solution with stuff underneath the board, then with all your high current demand pedals, my tip is you'll probably need either Strymon units & extensions or GigRig ones - I have a Ditto X4 like you & a full Pedaltrain Classic Pro, so I've opted for a Generator, 3 Distributors, 5 Isolators, 4 TimeLords & a SuperNova for a total current draw of around 3.5A - GigRig very helpful and a Spreadsheet needed to plan it all out ! Good luck, but don't underestimate the importance of isolated supplies - digital pedals can get quite 'noisy' if there's interference...

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  6 років тому

      Thanks Guy! I have a Strymon Zuma and am using that to power the board. Works really well!

    • @grega1207
      @grega1207 6 років тому

      Yes, the Zuma is definitely the cat's meow for power!

    • @guyac01
      @guyac01 6 років тому

      I was very impressed with the Zuma & Ojai... it's a very neat solution, but because my board needs different Voltages for some pedals, if I'd opted for the Zuma, I would have needed GigRig units (or similar) in addition to those, so I opted for an all-GigRig solution (which delivers the same power, but not so pretty...) - what I found surprising, was finding out that when you've got some 'serious' demand for power on a big board, the options are so limited - I ran through Voodoo Lab, T-Rex & MXR PSUs (all of which are fine, just limited in terms of Current), before I even understood the problem... as I understand, in the 5A range, there's only Strymon & GigRig ?

    Bill, looking pretty awesome! If you happen to find it challenging to hit the foot switches on the pedals in the back row, Pedaltrain actually makes “boosters” that slightly elevate the fronts of the rear pedals so they stick up higher than the ones in front. Makes it less likely for you to accidentally step on the knobs of the pedals in the front row. Don’t ask me how I know that 🤦‍♂️. As always, thanks for sharing!

    Great choices! I'm happy that you went with the Pitch Fork. I think you should use it more! A few thoughts: A lot of those pedals have great MIDI interfaces that will work with controllers like the GigRig G2. Just setup your presets and you're ready to go. You might also think about an expression pedal in addition to your volume pedal. You can get some great modulations with an expression pedal, but you gotta have a volume pedal for your swells. Great job and best of luck to you!

      @@chordsoforion This was my take to with all of the pedals you have working for you as it greatly helps minimize the need to make multiple taps to change scenes when performing. I've heard great things about the GigRig G2. I have used the Boss ES-8 for the past year and like it for the ability to control 8 loops and easily access the presets on the big Strymons, Eventide H9, Line6 HX Stomp via Midi. It has allowed me to stay ahead of the song when changes are needed with less stress about missing one of the needed taps.
      Meanwhile and more importantly, I love and have been inspired by your tasteful playing since coming across your videos in the last couple of months. I appreciate your giving to the ambient community and beyond. I hope the pedal companies realize you are definitely creating commerce with your videos. Strymon, Line6, Source Audio, TC Electronics, Wampler - Take good care of Bill!!

      It takes some practice, but I found that placing the volume pedal before distortion the volume pedal acts also as a gain controller. Currently (due to your suggestion) my volume pedal is near the end before the delay and reverb. When I have the funds I will insert a second volume pedal at the start of my chain so as to have one at both ends.

    I'd love to hear Chords of Orion in the context of a small, ambient jazz fusion-oriented band, similar to the Mark Wingfield project that recorded "The Stone House" album. I think your style would work great in that context.

    It's a really good idea to draw a schematic of your signal chain and keep it handy so if you want to make a change you don't need to play 'follow he cords' - it looks real busy under there in a short time.

    Not knowing the nature of your gig, you may be better served by the TimeLine than the Dig & ElCapistan _only_ because you have the ability to configure presets and access to multiple delay engines. I love the Dig & El Capistan because it just feels easier to mess around with them when being creative. But if I needed to recall settings quickly, I'd go with the TimeLine.

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  6 років тому

    I saw Dan Steinhardt rewire Greg Howe's pedalboard on " That Pedal show" on UA-cam and I'd like Dan to rewire mine as well. The way it's powered is crucial and the central command control for all the presents makes everything much easier. I saw Greg Howe last week in NYC with Simon Philips and his board sounded great. I clearly can see that good wiring and separated independent power makes a difference. Dan does not like daisy chained power. Greg was elated by the lack of noise from his distortion boxes. That Pedal Show, and Dan's Gig Rig are amazing channels on UA-cam.

    Good morning.
    Since I discovered you I've been searching YT for other examples of ambient guitar music. I am probably wrong, but you seem to have your reverb last in the effects chain - most of the other performers seem to as well. One other contributor that I've found has the looper last. It all comes down to personal preference, I'm sure, but I would be interested to hear your comments about this.
    Glad to hear that you're taking your music on the road, it's my intention to try ambient music in the restaurants in my area (south east England) which will be a big change for the eaters and for me as well.
    Thanks in advance.

    With multi-patch pedals like Timeline and Big Sky it might be worth your while thinking about a programmable loop switcher like the Boss ES-8. Then you can programme it to change patches on those pedals. Saves you having to tap dance so much.

    If your compressor is on all the time put it at the top same for any pedal you are not going to adjust nor touch, that goes for other pedals to, you probably know this, but as you put first and bottom thought I would mention it. For live I would look at a switcher than can store the presets and something the is midi given the amount of presets you can select then. Maybe source audio soleman for timeline and bigsky preset combos or Moen GEC8 midi or Musicom efx V then you can swop the order of the pedals and they you primary two things are the switcher and the volume pedal. I would also add a floor tuner for a gig especially if you are using more than one guitar.

    I love your channel Bill. Your videos are always informative and inspiring. Curious on how you will be playing your gig; will you be using your 11 Rack connected to a PA? I’m considering picking one up since I don’t have an amp anymore, and while software sims are pretty good, I’ve heard the 11 sounds better.

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  6 років тому +1

      The gig has come and gone. It was a small private affair, and I did not use any amp modeler. I used the Strymon Riverside to give me a bit of a amp-like tone, and had the Strymon BigSky at the end of the chain with the cab sim turned on. Plugged that directly into a small Bose PA. Worked really well for what I was doing.
      As far as the Eleven Rack goes, I have been looking at them too, as the price seems to be going down even more. I am guessing they are going to be gone soon. Wouldn't mind having a second one, as the hardware amp sims work well for my sound. Its aged pretty well...

  • @EzyoMusic
    @EzyoMusic 6 років тому

    My vote is for Strymon DIG with the Golden Ratio setting. I run mine into the Meris Mercury7 but I haven't seen you use one. I would run the volume pedal first in the effects loop. I put a lightly mixed chorus after mine but I don't know if you're into chorus much. I find it adds some movement to long sustained notes or chords. Maybe out your Immerse there since it has chorus and if you want you can have reverb into delay into reverb. Into delay, maybe. Kind of like the Ocean Machine but with different pedals. How about an expression pedal, by the way? Good luck. :)

    Volume before the distortion to control the amount of signal that goes you want to be clipped, with one distortion/overdrive and one volume you can achive several "layers" of distortion like you have 2 ovedriven channels on your amp

    • @chordsoforion

      I use the technique a lot, but just use the guitar's volume control. I prefer the volume pedal after the distortion for smoother swells with unvarying gain.

    For tone shaping, you really just have clean/dirty with this configuration. Why not include the Mel9 (either before or after the overdrive but before the ditto) to give you string/flute options with your looping?
    I would question the usefulness of the triple delay in a live setting. I love mine, but the fact that you can't recall settings etc. linits you to a set and forget type function and it takes a lot of space up. I'd go for a DIG/Timeline combo, way more versatile and useable in a live setting. Plus to my mind, if I went to see CoO live and I didn't see the "precious" DIG on the floor...I'd be a little shocked lol.

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  6 років тому

      It is shocking to think about the concept of "no DIG". I may have to rethink my strategy for this gig. :-)

  • @waltersmetak
    @waltersmetak 6 років тому

    Oh no!!! The El Cap!!! For certain!!! Unless you are going to make some quirky, bizarre delay sounds (which the Timeline is perfect - but don't see that as your thing; and if not the mistaken, the algorithms on the TimeLine don't really capture all the glory of the El Cap). Same for goes for reverb - the Neunaber Immense instead of the BigSky (unless you want to do something uncanny). Power supply - obviously something with isolated outputs (being yourself a Strymon guy, a nice big, blue Zuma brick, right?). I would also add a cheap expression pedal - a used roland costs next to nothing - for the triple delay, especially live - you may want to tweak the feedback or some other parameter during the gig. Just throw it at the side, doesn't have to go onto the board. And, vital, a buffered tuner - the new Polytune 3 is great - right at the beginning of the chain - also serves as a kill switch - hey, you never know when things may get out of hand. Best of luck on your gig!

  • @reedl2353
    @reedl2353 6 років тому +1

    I'm kind of surprised that with all of the midi-capable pedals you're putting on the board that you don't have a controller of some sort. Will you be switching your settings manually for every song, or just using one setting for everything? The pedal choices themselves seems great, although I did think it was interesting that you went with the Timeline over the DIG. Clearly the Timeline is more versatile, but you love the DIG so much! It might be a more obvious choice if we knew more about your gig (which I hope you get).

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  6 років тому

      The gig is a small private affair. I hope to share more about the context of it on a subsequent video. I will be playing and singing a couple of songs with acoustic baritone, and then doing the COO thing for 30-45 minutes. I am just going with my gut feeling for what I will feel like during the gig. It doesn't really matter - I just generally go with the flow anyhow. :-)
      Also, MIDI. If I played out a lot, i would definitely get a controller/loop switch. But it's overkill for one gig. I will just not do a lot of patch switching.

    • @reedl2353
      @reedl2353 6 років тому

      Perfectly understandable. I would just suggest that your rig seems way more flexible than you need for this type of gig. You might find that using the DIG, El Capistan (or Brigadier, not really sure which you have there) and the Neunaber Immerse might be a better fit because you can set and forget them. It doesn't sound like you'll need even a fraction of the firepower you're putting on your board. Which is not to say that it isn't awesome. :)

    Hey Bill! Do you mind if I ask you a question since sooo many modulation gear passed through your reviews. I`m going to make some performances since the long time, when I was a pedal guy, my rig was very big and not transporting-friendly, now I have a preamp for my main tone and what I need is an all in one compact processor with an effects loop for all kind of modulations (delay\chorus\tremolo\shimmer\pitch shifters...everything the one might expect from processor). Could you personally advise smth? I didn`t follow guitar processors development for like 6 years. Fractal`s processors are very bulky and not compact and slightly more expensive than I`d like to spend

    Hey guys! I recently got a few pedals and for the most part are mainly going to be used for swells and ambient guitar sounds during songs. What order should I put these in to make this sound? I have a volume pedal, tuner, distortion, delay, reverb, compressor and a wah.

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  5 років тому

      Assuming that you are plugging into an amplifier, I suggest starting with Tuner->Compressor->Wah->Distortion->Volume Pedal->Delay->Reverb. After working with this order, you can make changes based on your preference. A kind of off topic question but maybe not so much.
    What are your thoughts about equalisation pedals and clean boosters?
    I'm actually considering purchasing the Strymon Riverside and losing my Mxr 10-band equalizer, TC Electronic Spark my Fulltone OCD and my Boss Metal Core.... Thoughts?
    Would the Riverside cover that and all areas/ sounds?

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  6 років тому +1

      The EQ section is great and I think you could easily lose the EQ. As far as clean boost goes, there is a boost function that you can use in conjunction with an external switch. Depending on how you use Spark, this could potentially eliminate it. The Metal Core - if you are really into super high gain scooped mid tones, you may still need this one, as the Riverside is an amp-style overdrive.
