  • In this video I review and compare 5 budget shotgun microphone, including battery powered mics geared toward on-camera use, short and long production microphones, and shotgun mics with multiple pickup patterns.
I provide audio samples from a traditional boom arm setup, as well as in a closer, podcast or voice over style setup, so you can easily hear and compare the tone and character for each shotgun microphone.
I also share the unique features and accessories that each microphone provides, like low cut filters, USB-C support, and more.
The shotgun microphones included in this video are the Deity V-Mic D4, Comica VM20, BOYA BY-BM6040 and BY-BM6060, and the Godox VDS-M1.
After watching, leave a comment and let me know which microphone was your favorite, and which mic surprised you the most.

I have my favorites, but what are yours? Did any of the mics in this video surprise you? Which one do you think is the best value?

The 6060 really underperformed on the low-end but i believe this is on purpose, as those long range of shotgun mics are designed for outdoor shooting, hence less bass means less noise out of the box, sacrificing a bit of low end. On the other end, I was very surprised by the Deity, it sounded really full and those mids came through perfectly. I found, on the other end, that Comica was a bit muffled on the low end and wasn't that present. So for me my favs are:
      1. Deity D4
      2. Boya 6040
      3. Godox VDS M1 which sounds very similar to the 6040
      4. Comica VM20
      5. Boya 6060
JT, I have a question though: how did you record the XLR mics? You passed them through camera or did you use a different interface?

@@marcodimartino2810 I had the same thoughts about the 6060. And after EQ, it sounds really good even indoors. It sounds pretty muddy inside straight out of the box, but that’s probably by design and is not really meant for the same use case as some of the others.
I recorded all of these mics directly into my RODECaster Pro II interface. The Deity and Comica microphones I connected wirelessly through the RODE wireless pro transmitter

Went for the Godox after careful consideration. Used the link. Thanks for the hard work.

I'm impressed by the Comica VM20, especially compared to the others here. The BM6040 is nice too. Purely in the sound quality category. I was looking to replace my broken RODE Videomic pro and the Comica would seems like a good option if the Max SPL didn't suck (ambient sound at music festivals...). I guess the best compromise would be the Deity.

I think the Deity and Comica are very close in this video as far as sound goes. and the 6040 might be my overall favorite for sound, but lacks a lot of extra features of the previously mentioned mics.
The RODE VideoMic NTG is also a great mic if you haven't checked that one out!

Both the Comica and the Boya 6040 sound excellent from what I hear here (but am not listening on fantastic speakers), and they sound very similar. I assume at this price, they are probably sourcing an off-the-shelf capsule, and they likely both are using the same one. But whatever they have sounds like it's very full with some depth, which I think the others lacked.

The 6040 was one of my favorites when it came to depth in the low end also.

Everything is so good now days for most jobs. Especially when you get the mic closev enough

It's definitely a lot easier to find a good sounding mic than it used to be!

I'm wondering what YOUR opinion is on which one sounds "the best".

This was probably one of the closer comparisons as a whole, so it's harder to pick. I did not like the BY-BM6060, at least for indoor use on my voice.
I did really like the BY-BM6040, as well as the Deity and Comica mics. The Godox mic wasn't bad either, just had a more distinct sound.
So, if I wanted an XLR mic, I'd pick the BY-BM6040. If I wanted a more on-camera focused mic, the Comica and Deity mics are pretty much tied. I like the SmartPort on the Deity mic, so if having that USB-C capability is useful for you, then it's an easier choice.
All of them could be EQed easily to sound great, so I'd go with one that has the price point and features you'd find useful, rather than sound alone.

Which sound card are you using with the BM6040?

    • @NewLayer
      @NewLayer  Місяць тому +1

I used internet he RODECaster Pro II on everything, with no processing of any kind for these comparisons. As long as you get an interface from a reputable brand, it’ll sound exactly the same.
Stay away from cheap, no-name brands because their preamps suck and will be very noisy.

@@NewLayer Thanks for your reply. i've never used a microphone with an XLR input before, so i have a question, if I buy a "Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen" to connect "Boya BY-BM6040 microphone", will they be compatible? or should i consider a different setup?

    • @NewLayer

@@alexmaroto-zp6pv Absolutely, the Scarlett interfaces are what I recommend to 90% of people, I've had 5 in my life :) The 3rd gen solo is only $99 right now, which is a killer deal amzn.to/3VKe9Dy
