- Happy Mother's Day!
The Denver area has experienced a number of wet, stormy, hail-filled events up and down the Front Range of the Rockies during the past week. This is typical spring weather, but we've had an exceptional amount of rain as well. Flooding has been experienced by many parts of the high prairie that up until now, have been dusty, dry and parched.
Knowing what can happen to any type of nest that's exposed to prolonged wind and heavy rain, Peter visited the Wildcat Mountain golden eagle nest as soon as feasible. He arrived at the site on the afternoon of May 12, and spent an hour watching both eagles as they searched the landscape to their southwest. Everyone looked pretty dry and the young eaglets looked healthy. He watched the parents launch off the cliffs and take long, powered flights, but their targets were obscured by the terrain and the distance. After about 45 minutes, the female came back with a prairie dog, and began feeding both of the eaglets.
The sky behind Wildcat Mountain looked ominous again and the wind began to pick up, but the eaglets would have plenty in them to keep them warm, and the nest location is well- sheltered from the prevailing bad weather to the north. Stay tuned, and please subscribe to help us grow our raptor channel!
