Can we all just take a moment to appreciate the absolute FIRE bass playing by Mike Rutherford here? Good Lord...
no i played it actually.....
During the keyboard solo the bass is ripping. He’s so underrated!
No
Not as good as Hackett night night

Genesis is the greatest rock band in history. Many just don't get it.
I remember a few years ago I was in a record shop in London and I saw a bloke looking through second hand vinyl and he got to Genesis and skipped straight passed it with a look of disgust lol. It is what it is. Their discography is where all the magic is.
I’ve always gotten it. Unfortunately The Magazines, Jann Wenner and the rest of the big wigs don’t.
@@philseida5428 There is no other band like them. I never get bored of listening to them
@@quaid667 ...... I hear you on that. Very unique sound with the Keyboards out front, but their individual and collaborative incredible songwriting and arrangements are what set them apart. I think The 5 piece and 4 piece are what I play over more often then the three piece. Hackett’s playing is under appreciated and it shows after his last studio L/P with them. At least he’s keeping 1971-1977 Genesis Music of incredible Sound, Playing, Vocals, etc alive with his outstanding band and his lead singer, Nad Sylvan is a voice clone almost exact as Gabriel, even the emotions and style. As good as Yes is, especially their unmatched musicianship, ELP is as their incredible Maestro’s, Emerson, Lake and Palmer and Their Bombastic Steroid Prog, Floyd is with Psychedelia and Prog and King Crimson reinventing themselves in different Progressive Ways through the years, they all, great as they are and I like em a lot, but I LOVE GENESIS and their Mostly On, but years off, with Their 52 Year Gift of The Most Awesome and Incredible Music ever made Period. Thank You 🙏 England for these incredible 5,4 and now 3 incredible Blokes( Great Guys as Well..... Even Tony with his moodiness is still a great guy. Peter got them on the Map and Phil saved em despite how anyone feels about the Pop direction they mostly went, though Punk, Post Punk and Synth Alternative and New Wave were destroying Prog at that time. Still have Fading Lights, Domino, Home by the Sea, Dodo/Lurker, Old Medley, Duke’s Travel and End, Driving The Last Spike, No Son of Mine, Mama,...... All great songs indeed IMHO. You definitely get it. I get it, Real Genesis Fans Get It as does the Band itself. Italy, Belgium and France were the three Real Genesis die hard fans that kept them afloat and were the most Loyal Fans. That’s why Genesis, in the 2007 Turn it on Again Tour, gave back to Italy, with Rome having that outdoor Concert on The City Stage Free of charge. Of course over 500,000 fans converged up to the stage, but classy, unlike Deadly Soccer Matches. That’s why The Blokes of Genesis could never be equaled as well. I also Love The Beatles alot( mostly the beginning through Revolver ), but cooled off when I found out a lot of their Hit Songs, believe it or not, weren’t written by them. See the Wrecking Crew and possible Ghost writing suspects like Elton John, Theodore Adorno, etc. Still, they did write songs, just not nearly as much as The World’s been fed to their head. I think Genesis wrote their own songs. The Last Domino in 5-6 months start their North American Tour here in Chicago for now 2 days( a 2nd day added ). Wish the 5 and 4 piece could have finished what they started to come full circle. Just the fact the 3 piece of Collins( poor Blokes health had him sitting 🪑 almost the whole show in rehearsals and that’s how they’ll perform with Collins son Nick on Drums and Long time Live Staple on Guitar. Just grateful the have a Last Domino to share with us, their real True Die Hard Fans. Thank You 🙏 Manager Tony Smith and Peter, Phil, Mike, Tony and Steve for your incredible Music, Interviews and unique Cool personalities as well. Never be a Band That touches my Heart and Soul and puts goosebumps on my skin, Like Genesis Did. Incredible Run they had.
@@philseida5428 well said. I play guitar and since yesterday I've been learning how to play the song Harlequin which as far as I know was written by Mike Rutherford and I have to say it is very well written and meticulous. I am also a songwriter and I am blown away how this is coming from a bunch of kids barely out of their teens. There is no showboating. Their songs are what they are all about. When you said unique, you are absolutely right. Many bands are inspired by the fab four but many end up writing songs like them. With this band, it occasionally sounded like the Beatles and they would admit it. Their aim was to be different and play by feel and go with what sounds good. No different than how Pink Floyd wrote. Plus one thing that I love about Genesis is they could set music to anything. It's like listening to a soundtrack without a movie. I have to say it is difficult to talk passionately about this band without sounding like a raving lunatic 😂 but once Genesis get under your skin there is no turning back.
This album is a fantastic story ...
I love this album but the story is wacky as hell! Lol
Being a double album, there was an opportunity for some more unusual melodies. I think l love this album more every time I listen to it, it's got to be up there with the very best of prog rock from that wonderful era of music. Peter's vocals on this are amazing, and the instrumentation is phenomenal.
Best band in the world
It’s one of those rare double albums and prog records whose length, scope, and aspirations are successfully executed. At times the music and lyrics actually feel tantamount to an otherworldly journey, which is the impression prog rock should lend to its audience…ideally.
Can’t exactly say the same for Yes’s ‘Topographic Oceans’ or other similar misfires.
Anyone who thinks Phil wasn’t one of the greatest drummers ever, needs to try playing this song the right way
And you know what, it's not just his great drumming with this Peter Gabriel era of Genesis that is great, his drumming with Brand X is really amazing.
@@jskypercussion yes it is terrific!
One of The Lamb’s Best Period...... Tony shine’s on this. Great Vocals by Peter as well as Phil’s remarkable drumming.
Peter, except for the Light dies down, a lyrical genius as well as Tony, Mike, Steve and from Duke on Phil.... Lyrically Speaking, but for me the True Magic is 1970-1977..... Incredible string of incredible Music Period. Shout out to Anthony Phillips ( Trespass ) and the late John Mayhew ( Trespass... R.I.P. )...... Of course all others ever in Genesis like John Silver, Ray Wilson, etc....... Magical Band Surely.
This song is so special. For me, a masterpiece
One of the best albums ever made. Peter Gabriel ❤️
Minute 4:50, Tony's solo backed by Phil's drums reminds me "taranta" from Apulia region (south Italy). Whatever it is..I just adore it! It drives me crazy..
Peter Gabriel his vocals are Brilliant 🤩
The BEST Genesis album
Absolute perfection. This record has to be among the best ever if not the best.

6:08 - Phil Cameo !
I knew the keyboard solos from the early 80s medleys and was blown away hearing them in the context of the real songs. Phil's drumming is SO cool! I also love how Phil sings the part of John, "Now can't you see, where the raven flies there's jeopardy?"
2021 and Genesis with Phil still THE BEST. You're THE BEST forever in this world. Thanks thanks thanks for everything you do. From Paris...
You said it! Genesis /Phil will always be #1 in my heart!💜
Évidemment je partage votre opinion. Genesis reste pour moi le groupe référence de la pop progressive musique , que ce soit en qualité mélodique ou en quantité.
Incroyable est le nombre de joyaux à mettre à leur actif . J adore leur musique . Vraiment .
Actually Genesis with Peter and Steve was one of the best bands ever. This album was their masterpiece, the best album they ever did. Peter Gabriel ftw ♥️👌

Pas un jour sans Genesis et Phil. Pour garder la santé et le moral plongez-vous dans Genesis le plus souvent possible. Tous les albums de Genesis et de Phil sont des malles aux trésors. La Perfection musicale et en textes. From Paris Thank you very much, you're THE BEST.
Tout à fait d'accord avec vous, je valide depuis le plus gros arrondissement ;)
Patricia heureusement le virus Genesis est à vie
Un jour sans Genesis inamigable ,savais même pas que ça existe
A genius' soul plays a perfect music
Truly, it's hard to listen to most modern bands and find the same level of awesome that Genesis had in the 70's LOL. You know they had so much fun putting their crafts together. Each shines, but come together to create a crazy mindscape of insanity that I will love for the rest of my days.
I don't think that it's supposed to, but recently I saw a picture of Peter's 'Slipperman' costume from this tour and it made me laugh 😂 It's confusing-looking and kind of obscene! Oh how I wish I could've seen them, just one show, on this tour 😭 I was born over 20 years too late. Genesis is my favourite group 🫶🏻
Masterpiece
This is pure genius, what a fabulous piece of creativity.
A truly brilliant song, from a brilliant album.
This is top level composition
not as top as the Illegal Alien Afternoon Medley
My fav from album
One of their most underrated songs! one of their absolute best songs! Tony and Phil are phenomenal
These releases feels like a big countdown to The Last Domino Tour

8 wonderful minutes.
Great backing vocals from phil on this one. And that organ melody....what a track!!
Beautiful a masterpiece. Bravo ,!!
How do you just create something like this!? It's so wonderfully spontaneous whilst still being artistically potent
Thank you!!! It is going onto my YT "Genesis /Phil Collins" playlist!! Your music makes me so happy!!! (Love you Phil!💜)
Did anyone else pick up on the Supper's Ready easter egg in the keyboard solo? I pointed this out to a friend of time who's been a massive Genesis fan his entire life and loves the hell out of this album last night, he never picked up on it before and damn near had an existential crisis.
Can you elaborate further? What easter egg?
@@maese2000 its in the keyboard solo at about 5:25
Hmmm, is it from the organ solo in Apocalypse in 9/8 or something sung, I am unable to hear it? Tony might have used a similar motif without it being intentional. And Genesis often worked quotes from different tunes into their music, say: Los Endos, which contains quotes from Dance On A Volcano, or ....In That Quiet Earth, which reuses motifs from 11th Earl Of Mar.
The Lyrics and Story of this Amazing song, for those who wish to sing along (the rhyme is planned).
The Arrival
Leaving by the same door from which he had come in,
He finds some sort of freaks ghetto on the other side.
When they catch sight of him, the entire street of distorted figures burst into laughter.
One of the colony approaches him.
I wandered lonely as a cloud,
Till I came upon this dirty street.
I've never seen a stranger crowd;
Slubberdegullions on squeaky feet,
Continually pacing,
With nonchalant embracing,
Each orifice disgracing
And one facing me moves to say "hellay".
He is grotesque in every feature, a mixture of ugly lumps and stumps.
His lips slip across his chin as he smiles in welcome and offers his slippery handshake.
His skin`s all covered in slimy lumps.
With lips that slide across each chin.
His twisted limbs like rubber stumps
Are waved in welcome say `Please join in.`
My grip must be flipping,
'Cause his handshake keeps slipping,
My hopes keep on dipping
And his lips keep on smiling all the time.
Rael is a little disillusioned,
When the Slipperman reveals that the entire colony have one-by-one been through
The same glorious romantic tragedy with the same three Lamia,
Who regenerate themselves every time,
And that now Rael shares their physical appearance and shadowy fate.
"We, like you, have tasted love.
Don`t be alarmed at what you see,
You yourself are just the same
As what you see in me."
Rael:
Me, like you? like that!
Slipperman:
"You better watch it son, your sentence has only just begun
You better run and join your brother John."
Amongst the contorted faces of the Slippermen,
Rael recognizes what is left of his brother John.
They hug each other.
A Visit To The Doktor
John bitterly explains that the entire life of the Slipperman
Is devoted to satisfying the never-ending hunger of the senses,
Which has been inherited from the Lamia.
There is only one escape route; a dreaded visit to the notorious Doktor Dyper
Who will remove the source of the problems, or to put it less politely, castrate.
They discuss the deceptively-named escape for a long time
And decide to go together to visit the Doktor.
"You`re in the colony of slippermen.
There`s no who? why? what? or when?
You get out if you`ve got the gripe
To see, Doktor Dyper, reformed sniper - he`ll whip off your
Windscreenwiper"
John and I are able
To face the Doktor and his marble table.
The Doktor:
Understand Rael, that`s the end of your tail.
Rael:
"Don`t delay, dock the dick!"
I watch his countdown timer tick....
The Raven
They survive the ordeal and are presented with the offensive weapons in sterile yellow plastic tubes, with gold chains. "People usually wear them around their necks, " said the Doktor handing them over. "The operation does not necessarily exclude use of the facility again, for short periods, but of course when you want it you must provide us with considerable advance warning."
He places the number into a tube,
It`s a yellow plastic "shoobedoobe".
It says: "Though your fingers may tickle
You`ll be safe in our pickle."
As the brothers talk themselves through their new predicament, a big black raven flies into the cave, swoops down, grabs Rael`s tube right out of his hands and carries it up into the air in his beak.
Suddenly, black cloud come down from the sky.
It`s a supersized black bird that sure can fly...
The raven brings on darkness and night
He flies right down, gives me one hell of a fright.
He take the tube right out of my hands
Man, I`ve got to find out where that black bird lands.
Rael calls for John to go with him.
And he replies "I will not chase a black raven. Down here you must read and obey the omens. There`s disaster where the raven flies."
"Look here John, I`ve got to run
I need you now, you going to come?"
He says to me:
John:
"Now can`t you see
Where the raven flies there`s jeopardy.
We`ve been cured on the couch
Now you`re sick with your grouch.
I`ll not risk my honey pouch
Which my slouch will wear slung very low."
So once more John deserts his brother.
Rael:
He walks away and leaves me once again.
Even though I never learn,
I`d hoped he`d show just some concern.
The bird leads Rael down a narrow tunnel, he seems to be allowing him to keep at a closed distance. But as Rael thinks he might almost catch hold of the bird, the tunnel opens and finishes at an enormous subterranean ravine. Casually, the raven drops his precious load into the rushing waters at the bottom. It`s enough to drive a poor boy ravin` mad.
Seeing the dangers of the steep cliff, our courageous hero stands impotent and glowers.
I`m in the agony of Slipperpain
I pray my undercarriage will sustain.
The chase is on, the pace is hot
But I`m running so very hard with everything that I`ve got.
He leads me down an underpass
Though it narrows, he still flies very fast,
When the tunnel stops
Catch sight of the tube, just as it drops.
I`m on top of a bank too steep to climb
I see it hit the water just in time
To watch it float away...watch it float away...watch it float away...
Okay? Very respectfully. What the heck was that? There was quite a bit of blocks in there that did not appear to be in the song? I'm confused.

Excellent du grand art mon groupe préféré
This album makes me feel strange somehow, when i compare it to Selling England By The Pound and Trick of the Tail that came either side of it. It sounds like Genesis went back into themselves, this material sounds very reminiscent of such as Trespass especially. Maybe it was the locality where Genesis went to write it that had an effect on them. Took me ages to get into it and am glad i've finally managed to do so after all these years.

I liked the original drums better. The reverb on the hits were really sick. Maybe upload previous versions (1994/1975) online?
Yes, I wonder why they got rid of it? That did bug me when I first heard this remix
Yep. I love the 1994 remaster. It's just a much cleaner version of the original mix from the stereo master tape.
The Album now is this year 50 yeras old and some songs seems today from 50 years in the future. How this boys of 24 years old then could see 100 years into the future?
