    I saw Genesis perform this in Dec ‘74 in NYC. I remember saying, “wtf is going on”!😳😁

      @@alkebulansan It was Dec 7th ‘74 at The Acadamy of Music in Manhattan. I, nor most, knew the album. It had been released only a couple of weeks prior. Genesis wasn’t getting radio airplay in ‘74. Back then as a 16 yr old, the only other way I or my friends would know of an album’s release and tour was from reading Circus or Cream magazine. I thought I was going to see Selling England by the Pound performed. The Lamb show was a lot to take in and process, not knowing the material. I came away saying what an awsome, yet very strange evening. I didn’t realize I was watching a multi media rock opera. Seeing Peter Gabriel crawl out of a blow up phallus in a lumpy costume certainly wasn’t expected!
      I bought the album the next day. I read and was totally intrigued by the gatefold story(which actually was placed on the back of everyone’s seat), played it endlessly, and only then did it make sense as the concept album it is. It’s one of my favorites, and I think the band’s best album. They did perform the Musical Box as an encore. That, I at least knew☺️

      @@likesnoozn Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. Brilliant anecdote! I was 12 when Genesis first dropped in my lap - the UK's hottest summer, '76, well, until this week! I was gob smacked! The very first album I ever bought was The Lamb, having no idea what a "concept" album was.
      And you just enlightened me by telling me the gig you saw was in the Academy of Music in Manhattan which l googled and found out became the Palladium which is where I would have many crazy nights 11 years later when I moved to NYC in '86! I had no idea it was the Academy of music prior to that.
      As I wrote, to see The Lamb tour was something I would have loved to have witnessed. I did though manage to see Genesis several times and once with Gabriel at the Six of the Best gig in Milton Keynes on Mike's birthday Oct.2 1982.
      Gabriel came on stage in a coffin carried by six pallbearers dressed in black wearing top hats, sombre looks on their faces. The lid slid slowly back, Gabriel/Rael pokes out his head, "I see faces and traces of home", "Back in New York City", We screamed back, "Ahh Ha!!" Oh the eruption of power. It rained all day. It was a quagmire. I lost a shoe. I didn't care. My hands were ringing red and my throat was hoarse. I didn't care. "A flower!" and finally, "The knife"!! Shivers. We arrived separate, we left as one.

      @@alkebulansan My daughter just arrived in London for work. Her coworkers said the heat’s ridiculous.
      Great Gabriel story!
      I saw him in ‘78 at The Bottom Line. Robert Fripp played guitar that night but for legal reasons had to remain off to the side of the stage. There’s a interesting video called The Story of The Lamb on YT suggesting the inspiration came from the cult movie El Topo.
      I caught Genesis in ‘76 at The Beacon with Bruford on drums, Wind and Wuthering at a college in Suffern NY, ATTWT at MSG, and the last time I saw them was Duke, where I was lucky enough to get front row at MSG. That was an experience. All great shows, but I much preferred the small intimate venues before they hit the big time. Pun intended!

    Well healed, disciplined musicians getting all the instrumentation down is one thing. Sounding THAT much like Peter is altogether another. God man....wow.

    The only reason I missed this show and the NorCal show is because I was busy watching Steve Hackett and his band doing Seconds Out three nights in a row. Pity one can't be in 2 places at once.

      @@musicisourfriend Kinda bummed I missed that Lamb show. I attended (as a 19yr old) the (now famous Genesis Archive 4 box set), show at the Shrine Auditorium back in '74.
      That's the last time I saw the complete Lamb. As great as the Hackett shows were, I would have traded one of them for a (Musical Box) Lamb show.

    The first song I ever heard by Genesis was The lamb lies down on Broadway and that was in 1980, but at that time the Phil Collins era was just starting and I was heavy into it, but something told me to go back and check out the earlier records with Peter Gabriel and now I have every Genesis album ever made. PS: Steve Hackett's new live band is totally 🔥 🔥 🔥!!!

    I love The Musical Box. What they do for the classic material is invaluable but they always seem to try & copy what’s on record rather then enjoy themselves on stage (if that makes sense). An example is the opening to ‘Slippermen’. Note for note (more or less) from the record.

    I love "The Colony of Slippermen" performance. I believe it's a cautionary tale in a much longer nonlinear story about Rael, but I don't exactly know what it is. Could someone let me know, please?

    • @musicisourfriend
      @musicisourfriend  2 роки тому +2

      It's quite a fascinating storyline. Rael is in New York City. He comes across these men covered in STD's. They're called "The Colony of Slippermen." During the song, Rael visits Doctor Dyper to remove his "windscreen wiper." But the raven, which brings darkness and light steals the tube containing it. This moves us into the song "Ravine."

    • @aceknowledgable9403
      @aceknowledgable9403 2 роки тому +3

      @@musicisourfriend Thanks, I think it's a cautionary tale and Rael learns the hard way from his encounter with the lamia two songs prior. Moral of the story: DON'T trust in beauty blindly or else become a Slippermen, damaged and forgotten.
