Senior dental insurance can be a challenging task. Whether you are coming into Medicare or just need to find a dental plan it can be a bit confusing. Also including vision coverage and hearing coverage. Most coming off of a group plan likely had dental coverage, vision coverage and hearing coverage.
The good news is that there are a couple of different options. You can choose from a discount dental plan which likely will include vision and hearing coverage or you can choose a PPO type dental plan.
PPO type dental plans are offered through insurance companies and generally provide $1,000 or $1,500 in benefits per year. These plans will usually have a 6 month waiting period on major services if you have not had credible dental coverage in the recent past. This can pose a problem if you are in need of dental services in the near future.
Discount dental plans can offer a very good benefit at a much lower premium. Discount dental plans offer pre-negotiated rates with dentist that can be 40%- 60% less that what you would pay without insurance. Discount dental plans can also offer vision coverage and hearing coverage. All without a waiting period.
Premiums on these 2 choices can vary greatly. PPO plans will usually cost about $40 per person per month. Discount dental plans are close to $10 per month and you can add family members for less than that.
It is very easy to get a discount dental plan. You can do everything yourself online without having to speak with anyone.

A few years my wife needed work on a tooth and we had dental insurance. But the funny thing is that the dentist used a CODE number that was a variation on the work she needed. Lo and behold this WASN"T covered by insurance. It was quite expensive. My point is that no matter how good it sounds, there will always be a way for people to take advantage of you and there isn't much you can do about it.

Most dentists that take discount plans are sub par or work for chain dental companies. Not my first choice.
For my ZIP Code the Cigna plan was best. Lowest prices. Cheaper than the Aetna Vital Savings plus more extra benefits.
Hi again! Ok so say you have xrays - you pay: The 1 time yearly Plan cost of $149, then when you go to the DDS you pay the discounted fee of $61 [vs $136]. ... and/or other discounted fees as listed if you have other procedures. So is like ala-carte but much less exppensive(?) Thx for any add'l info. ;>)

I am considering Aspen Dental's $39 per year plan. Exams and x-rays are covered, other work 30% off. They are pretty reasonable to start with so I imagine you get a decent out-of-pocket with them as well.
Dental Savings plans are great but you must go to the Dentists that take those plans. That being the case many people may have to switch Dentists.

If I have some prescription, hearing or vision on my medicare advantage plan can I take both discounts. Let's say I can get hearing aids for $3,000 covered on my advantage plan, can I use the dental discount plan to get whatever percentage it is off the remainder of my hearing aid purchase?

Yes. You can use the Manhattan DVH plan in addition to whatever else you may have. It will reimburse based on what you have paid out of pocket. I have used it personally in addition to my group dental plan. Hope that helps! -Keith

What I don’t like about Medicare or private insurance don’t wanna go that route is this dental benefits and it’s a known fact that when you get older that’s when your teeth start to have problems and denture are not covered by Medicare .
Medicare does not pay for a lot of things they are necessary when we get older and that is something I do not like. I’m sure many people like myself got dentures 10 years ago which cost him $5000 and cannot afford to get another set of dentures I am interested in seeing what you have to say about insurances that might help .😊👍

The plan that came with my medicare advantage plan basically very limited. And only for preventive care.

The prices listed on the website are average prices. Actual prices may vary by area zip code and dentist. Savings range from 15%-60%
Great plans! Just make sure your dentist takes the plan and ask for ADA codes that way you can get an exact fee!
