Seems that was one captain who really new his ship and the conditions. Knew how quickly he could get into position, knew he could fit into that space, knew he had the power to move the big ship, and do so quickly enough to avoid the collision, knew the effects of the wind and current, etc. Fail any one of those factors and he's part of the crash.
I always thought the tires were just to keep the boats from bumping and damaging, now I see why the added traction is important, without the tires for grip the boat would just glance off the smooth metal on metal simply wouldn’t work. Very cool.
This is the absolute opposite to a tug captain I encountered many years ago. While docking in Nassau, instead of coming alongside gently, the tug rammed us, missing the clearly marked tug spot by several feet and putting a 3-foot dent in the side of the ship. There are good and bad extremes in every profession. Anyway, I got a ride on the tug with our staff-captain to photograph the damage.
The tug seems to be the --Apollon-- Artemis, an icebreaking tug (1A1 ice class, breaks 0.8 meters of solid ice) operated by Alfons Håkans, built in Rauma Finland 1981, engines 2* Wärtsilä Vasa 8R22C, total 3,600 hp, Twin Aquamaster azimuthing propellers (facilitate good manouverability)
I worked as a ship docking tug operator for a couple years on San Francisco Bay....got caught like this once in China Basin. I remember the bow rubber actually caught fire before I could get stem on and stick with the stern just a few feet from the pilings.....but we didn't get any of that cool music! -Veteran '66-68
LOL I work in a Call Center - if I posted a vid of me with a headset on I wonder how many ppl would say Oh My God - You Are Fuck'n AMAZEBALLS at answering the phone !!!
0:29 Holy moly Ten Cents, I knew you could guide ships into port in high winds and bad weather, but I didn't know you could legit do a *"Tokyo Dorifto"* in the sea!
sweet driving tex you saved a dumb captain from ruining his career and millions in damages. salute to all you tug boat captains keeping others from doing dumb shit.
Possibly the most appropriate choice of music in youtube history.
I was thinking the same! I did actually laugh out loud...
It got muted immediately
I would of gone with imperial March
bbbb7888o ikrrr!!!😂😂😂
Jacob Sharp I would have gone with the Elmo song la la la la la la la la ELMO'S SONG la la la la la la la la la la la la
I work 3 years as tugboat captain, and this is the best thing i have ever seen

Years and years of doing the job and you end up a pro.... I value skills like these over throwing or hitting a ball..........
All depends if one was paying attention or not for all those years haha
Matthew Alford too bad you don’t control the purse strings
Matthew Alford +1
Matthew Alford Yep throwing or hitting a ball definitely would not help here!
Matthew Alford But would you value it more than playing with your balls?
Tug life 😎
i see what you did there 👍👍ha ha
+Makaveli Amsterdam Best maritime comment ever!
goed verzonnen, houden we erin.
ha nince one i see what ya did true in this case
Bas van beers ja Lol
epic win by tug driver, badass job done.
*captain. You don’t drive a boat.
You pilot a boat, not drive it.
Guys............this is the GiF or Jif situation all over again 🤦♂️.
Does the music justice, and that's saying a lot. No ordinary man, behind that helm....
**gets sued next day for making a scratch**
Badass tug crew! Earned their keep that night. Well done
Yeah, Baddass was the exact word I was thinking too.
I think they earned the week off not just their keep!
jon doe fired?
jon doe why fired?
Jon did what?..
Hero maneuvers!
How To Make Sushi haha awesome
I see you everywhere...
I want to like this comment but that would push it up to 301 and 300 seems satisfying
The brute power of tugs never ceases to amaze.
"The tugboat, for its size, is the most powerful craft afloat"
The tug I work on makes 7000hp😂
I always thought the tires were just to keep the boats from bumping and damaging, now I see why the added traction is important, without the tires for grip the boat would just glance off the smooth metal on metal simply wouldn’t work. Very cool.
This guy is a beast at tetris....
Yeah, but that's a kids game, this is real life with real consequences.
How can anyone dislike this. Tug boat totally saved the day
Probably the music

Great helm work + BIG BALLS = good job done

+Itapirkanmaa2 It's Artemis as mentioned in the description.
flamero So Sorry! The Artemis and the Apollon are sister ships however, so the same data applies.
It was public info from the shipowner's and various manufacturers' sites, if I remember right.
flight of the valkyries, nice
Tugs are proof of that "Big things come in small packages" saying, small but insanely powerful
Moved in like hero and helped out just in time. Nice job to the tug boat crew
I still can't get over how perfect the music choice is for this video.

Ten cent made a quick save before the liner crash into the dock as Theodore got a grip again
Tug captain definitely knew his tug. Great job. Bet he got an extra t-shirt at the company picnic that year 👍🏻
And that shirt said in the front of it printed- I LOVE TUGGING.
Wow the little tugboat it could. What a fantastic save by that tugboat captain.
And your music "flight of the Valkyries" was fantastic for this clip
Tuggy McTugboat-face to the rescue!
Damn the way is slipped right in between the pier and ship before it was too late was epic!
I thought they are normal sized ships until I looked at the van parked.
Someone get that skipper a medal and a box of cookies asap. He just won life.
And that's why these monsters are so little and nimble. Love tugs.
Gotta love the music! Something so dramatic for something that appears to be so insanely boring! Well done sir
Good save
huh
That tiny tug boat should be inspiration to us all!!
The tugboat forest size is the most powerful craft afloat.
The sheepdogs of the sea...Have to corral and heard those pesky freighters.
Dang. Another few seconds and that tug operator would have never been able to get into proper position. Nice save.
The tug's pilot/captain should be given medals. Impressive.
In 2018 over six hundred people think they can do better with out a tug, I'd like to see that.
They should be called Rub'n Tug Boats
He makes it look easy. I would probably shit myself and have a nervous breakdown. They are masters of their craft, that's for sure.
That tug crew are amazing, no panic, job done beautifully! I'd buy them all diner for that!
That's some mighty good tug handling there lol
T
That's some fancy handling of that tug
I'm a retired tug master this job is a very rewarding but you need to be very careful and vigilant i loved my job
i was gonn make a joke about not seeing any VC getting killed but that captains skill thoroughly impressed me
Victor Charlie???
LOL I work in a Call Center - if I posted a vid of me with a headset on I wonder how many ppl would say Oh My God - You Are Fuck'n AMAZEBALLS at answering the phone !!!
Insane skills, props to the cap of that tugboat!

Holy moly Ten Cents, I knew you could guide ships into port in high winds and bad weather, but I didn't know you could legit do a *"Tokyo Dorifto"* in the sea!
“Thank god we had that dash cam installed Captain”
that was crazy good...what a bold move on behalf of the tug!
Captain! I’m giving her all she’s got!
A masterful display of skill.
The music! 😂 made this truly awesome 👍🏽💯😂
must be a very experienced tug captain he jammed it in and made a good save...
hats off to the tugboat captain never seen such a beautiful graceful control I Guess That's Why They Call You captain,👍
sweet driving tex you saved a dumb captain from ruining his career and millions in damages. salute to all you tug boat captains keeping others from doing dumb shit.
The music made this video so fucking intense. Had me at the edge of my seat.
Amazing power of tugs design to push and pull very heavy and big ships, the tug is a hero in this scenario😀👏👏👏
So now I understand all about the childhood books "The Little Engine/Tug That Could." The unsung heroes of the harbor!
Ferry captain: this was all part of my plan, I know exactly what I am doing.
Good choice of music!
"Call up a hammerhead corvette, I have an idea"
32 valve quad-cam!
Vermoed dat deze voorsleepboot gebroken was, vandaar deze actie van de sleepboot...wel goed opgelost.
that was some bad ass maneuvering skills.
Amazing, the professionals at work, thank you.
Close one i was a bit tightened up just watching might have been the sound track had me going as well nice choice.
Good catch, Tugmaster!
That's what I say to my wife everytime she catches my LOAD in her mouth!
I've seen some nifty maneuvering stunts performed by Crowley in Puerto Rico some years ago.
I've been tugging for years. I tugged while watching this. I have gotten very good at it.
I like a powerful tug!
That's what I tell my wife everyday!
What a brave little tugboat...
Coolest bow thruster I ever did see
Quite a nice save
talent, judgement and mojos, another real professional when asked would tell you he/she just did his/her job...
'Quoting' just enough boat to hold the engine and props.
To avoid another Ever Given Suez Canal event
that music made that event epic
nice rescue!
A man 6 feet tall can walk right into the oil pan and look at the crankshaft of one of the engines on a Tugboat. I have done it.
That captain is owed a promotion
Como decimos en Ingles, “it wasn’t his first rodeo.”
I applaud the 1st mates moves.
That tug captain is impressive!
Tug boat driver deserves a raise
the tugboat capt. was listening to some eurobeats thats for sure.
He needs a raise "AND" a promotion💯💯💯👍❗🙏
I'm suprised the tug didn't capsize. With the captain and his huge balls of steel sitting at the bridge it must have a very high CG.
I think I can see the orchestra playing in the jetty though they're not there.
The orchestra are still on-board the ferry because of high winds .
sometimes you just need a good tug
Excellent job
Give that skipper a raise!
give this tug captain a raise!!
The truck on the sea torque king
I love tug boats, and tug boat operators. . xD They're like the ants of the ocean.
So I'm guessing you like tugging-off tug boat captains?- Joke buddy.
Beautiful save.
Great tugboat man! Make him a pilot!
Wow! great work!😮
charlie don't surf
And on that high note I will end my UA-cam video searching for the day
THAT TUG BOAT IS A HERO!!!
