David...Thank you so much for your awesome videos...firemaking in various and assorted ways has been a lifelong passion for me as well. I was doing a demonstration one day and a boy who was watching went and got a 36" fresnell lens and got an inch and a half diameter spot on a granite boulder bubbling moulten...when it cooled it turned into a flake of obsidian that he pried off with a pocket knife and handed to me.
** First thought: Gee, I hadn't considered a big screen TV's Fresnel lens - I'll bet that REALLY works well. ** Second thought: Oh NO, the Fire Master is going to ignite the entire world. ** Third thought: oh, yeah, never mind -- this was filmed 7 years ago, so we must be OK now. :D Very interesting demonstrations, David!!! Thanks.
You are right, it is amazing that we can use a SPOON to start a fire with the sun that is 93 MILLION miles away. We are truly in the Goldilocks zone. If we were any closer, dry forest would combust with no help.
Hi David...I couldn't find a comment area on your Blue Mora video so I came back here. All Mora knives have a high carbon core if you look at the middle of the top of the blade you will see a 1/16 inch dark grey line down the middle. The old cladding on both sides was soft steel which is why it stained easily. They finally got smart and used stainless on the sides. They don't always come razor sharp like they once did. A hard Arkensas whestone works best for me then stropping with jewellry polish on leather. A friend gave me a 'carbide knife sharpener' that you swipe the knife through and it chipped the high carbon edge all the way to the tip. You probably know all this but it seemed like you may have thought the knife was all stainless. Thanks for your videos... Bry
Great demo David, solar ignition is very powerfull when you know how to use it. People doesn't realise that most of the Forest fires are ignited by sun and a lot of times in combination with trash human had left in the bush like aluminium can etc... I'm always amazed of all the fire ban during Dryden periods wich fan be really pain in the ass for skilled peoples enjoying outdoors but no words on people leaving materials that can become majors source of solar concentration ça using fire. You demo with the va se shows that even a full bottle of water left behind you in the wood clan become problematic. Maybe as you said in one of Your vid you're not a bushcrater but You are probably the one out of UA-cam with the most skills about fire ignition Technics. Ciao from Quebec⚜
Well your very kind.... You talked about how easy it is for trash to solar ignite forest fires.... Go back and look at the make up mirror that I laid on the table when I was done with it. LOL!!! A little tighter focal point and I'd have melted down my 5 gallon bucket. Thanks!
+David West man you are right didn't notice it but now can't stop watching at it it's just a good point to mention and advise your viewers & subscribers.
I got Solar ignition with 8 different items... Small, Medium, and large (48") Fresnel Lenses, Concave Mirror, Bottom of a Beer Can Alcohol Stove, Flashlight Parabolic Mirror, Flower Vase, and a Tablespoon. If I had to pick the most reliable and easiest item to use out of these 8, by far, it would be the Medium Size Fresnel Lens... which is known as a Page Magnifier that you can but from Staples for $7. Come see how well it all turned out. Please SUBSCRIBE at the end of the video. Thanks!
Fun! I'm trying to stay out of the summer sun. A while back I saw a video where someone made a giant parabolic lens with a trash can lid, and a Mylar blanket.
I recall from years ago someone saying that it's possible to make a tiny loop with a piece of straw or other material and catch a drop of water in the loop and use that to project the sun . Worth a try huh ?
Has never made sense to me why people think that would work. You can't get a tight focal point when there's turbulence on an aqua lens, the aqua lens would make a focal point that's too small to focus, the focal point would not generate enough heat to ignite char... and those are some problems just off the top of my head... probably many more reasons why it wouldn't work.
Question: using the flashlight parabolic reflector.. Did you place the charred punk wood approximately where the light bulb would normally be? I think probably. Thanks.
Yes. We’re using the parabolic curve in reverse. The light from the bulb is reflected outward in that familiar beam shape. And the reverse use is the collecting of light or photons into a concentrated focal point to the very place where the bulb was.
Thanks for the great variety of firestarting techniques.... Did you see the video on 'Crazy Russian Hacker' channel "How to start fire with a hammer" ... 5:40-6:40 is where it happens... All from the friction of hammering.
I'd like to try that. My neighbors wouldn't appreciate all the noise though. If I try it, I'll impregnate the tinder with ashes so that all I'll need to do is just make it smolder a little , then I could blow it into flames. Thanks for telling me about it.
D W, Very powerful lenses. I did not know about the page magnifier. Thank you for guiding me to this video!

I got tired of storing it and brought to the dump.

Interesting, I never knew.
Hey David another great video, you are an expert at breaking things down to basics and passing on the skills.
Thank You!

I’m enjoying your videos,👍🏻
wow that was awesome!! cant wait to try my spoon
Great demos David.
Thanks, Benny!

Maaaaaaan!!!!! Yall stay out of Dallas... Man!!!
+David West There some hateful people in the world. Don't worry, There aren't enough pine trees up around Dallas.

A True Pyromaniac Indeed.
yes that medium size lens does the job quick ibet he could boil water with that big one
Hello David, great video. Is there anything you can start a fire with? Thanks for sharing all the wonderful creative ideas. Awesome!
Thanks Balloon Man!
Amazing!
Thank you
You talked about, what I thought I heard, char punk. Are you refering to punk trees like they have in Florida?
No, search my channel for... how to char punk wood.
Thanks for the great variety of firestarting techniques....
