Richpin, your videos are my constant companion when I'm working on my Satty. Thank you so much for your great channel. Saturn shade tree mechanics owe you a great debt of gratitude
Very concise and clear instructions. Always the professional. Thanks for taking the time and sharing your expertise with us Richpin.
Nice job as always. I really like that you even say what size the bolts are before you remove them. You really lay it out simply. Thanks Rich
Great video with well-placed shots and thorough explanations. Thanks!
Thanks for the advice. I made it there and back, but just barely. she was spewing pretty good when I pulled into the drive way lol. New water pump is on now, woulda took me twice as long without your videos. Big thanks!
Thank you for a great two part video on a difficult repair job! I know that it adds a lot of work but it really helps a lot of us out. Thanks again!
Followed this video to change the head on my Saturn and worked out great! Just have to figure out adjusting the rockers.
Great video man. helped me alot. I followed your instructions and saved money. THANK YOU.
Great job! Now I know the importance of changing the coolant and keeping an eye out for a weeping water pump.
i am impressed; last december i had my head gasket replaced on my eclipse and had a valve job; this stuff was far to in-depth for me and i wanted everything done right
Another Fantastic vid !! I would have liked to see how you flushed out the block with dish detergent. Camera angles and lighting was top knotch, well done.
I wish you were in my area so I could bring my Saturn to you!
anyone else want to take everything apart and clean it all with degreaser? ocd is not fun
You got it covered pretty good.
Thank you for this video i followed it step by step and made this process a lot easier to remove everything only took me 4 hours total
thank you, this is a big help for i am a mechanic of my own an this was very helpful. im putting new head gasket on my 97 saturn sl1 along with all gaskets an flanges. i subscribed an hopefully could use more help from you.
Hi,
You sure do a great job!! SO well done!! Thanks!!
You do good work, but more importantly explain why your doing it. Keep the faith!
Thanks Richpin! prob only do this anytime soon but it was very informational!
Glad it worked out.
@rodrigoelgu To check the head use a feeler gauge under a straightedge.I tighten the head bolts then loosen them so to make sure proper clamp load is achieved for final torquing.
I have not install these plugs before so i am not sure if they need sealer or not.I know the old core plugs were just driven in.
Good job fixed mine watching the video
and thank God for this awesome Bud Light beer. Cheers to ya's Rich !!
wow thats looks harder than I thought. I'm glad you did the video.I need a mechanic for sure.
many thanks for your videos
I love these saturns, they will run forever. My Brothers had 252k miles on it before it got totaled, and he changed his oil every 3500 miles, the head looked cleaner then that timing cover did after you cleaned it.
Thanks for the reply Rich. I took the valve cover back off my DOHC and I when I turn the crank over I can see that there is clearance between the heels of the camshaft lobes and both No.3 lifters. also the lifters our uneven. I have a few pictures if you would like to take a look.
Two revolutions of the crankshaft gear.
@happy543210 Saturn was a cousin of the GM family so it made sense to use the same sealer they used.
I have a spare engine here but the timing cover is on it so i can not measure the clearance. What was the tool you used.
Sounds like you had fun.
awsome, thank you for showing us!
@RandallFlaggNY I used a single sided razor blade and 220 grit sandpaper.
@knunne1 I would have videoed the flush procedure but i wanted to get the car out as fast as could at that point.
On this SOHC engine the TDC mark on the crank gear is at TDC when it lines up with the mark on the block in the 12 o'clock position.
Nice work.
I love all your videos but I am astonished that you didn't include any footage of installing the new head gasket!!!
An SL1 head gasket job and no cracked head? Amazing!
I really appreciate your time doing this video. It is helping me get the confidence to do this job myself instead of scrapping this car for a loss... One question. You mentioned not using the tool but a screwdriver when removing timing cover. More explanation would be very helpful as I now am concerned I may break my tensioner... I wasnt sure where/how to use screwdriver since it seems cover would make that difficult to do...
@h23sirlude Yes new torque to yield bolts.
Sure i'll take a look.
This is a life saver
@farmboy30117 Yup new head bolts.
Looking to change a head gasket on a dohc saturn '97 any suggestions for removing the timing chain?
I think if you replace the water pump and do a tune up you should be fine.
Important Update: Jan 1 2013 there will be a new richpin channel for all future videos.Richpin06a channel will be solely for all the Saturn lovers out there.Should be a lot of fun so stay tuned.
Again Thank You rich, this is the video I was looking for , prior replacing the timming chain on saturn sl 1998. Only thing I find confusing is the proper alignment of the lower timming sprocket ( crankshaft ) should notch at 12 o'clock or 3 o'clock ?
one silicone sealant my dad used at his shop all the time was some gray stuff made for diesel engines from ford, that is some awesome stuff. he never had a problem with that stuff.
I did a coolant system flush with dishwasher detergent.
Hey Rich I am currently working on the same excat car a 2001 Saturn sc1 and I was wondering is it okay to use a graphite head gasket to replace the old one?
@ramilio93 The flush goes like this first remove the thermostat put housing back.Mix 2 oz of automatic dishwasher powder to 1 gal of water.Fill the cold system run the car up to normal operating temp then drain.Ever time you do the flush cycle the engine has to be cold. Before your done flush with clean water.
@cosmicdust22 No editing error that is the correct way to tighten TORQUE TO YIELD HEAD BOLTS.
How did you manage to get the timing cover back on. I was able to wrestle it out but I can't get it back in. Also I got it close but can't get it over the crank gear. I'll I've managed is getting RTV everywhere and screwing up the surfaces
I will try to expound further. The bottom crank gear which drives the oil pump which is part of the timing cover must stay put when removing the timing cover. So what you are doing with the screwdriver is holding the crank gear in place when removing the timing cover.
you are the best.
There is a little difference because of the two cams involved. At this time i do not have a video on the DOHC.
Do the timing marks line up after you have rotated the engine two revolutions.
Are your timing marks lining up now.
Love your great videos!! Have you or do you plan on doing a head gasket video for a Saturn sl2 (dual overhead cam) engine?
Yes it is ok that is the way i like to do it.
Wow, I think I'll check the state of the water pump on my daughter's SW2 this week. I've read that I should remove the belt and see what kind of movement the pulley on the pump has and also see if it is weeping near the bottom. Any other tips to check its status. We bought it used and don't know when the pump was replace last.
Your a genius dude..
Hey richpin what should I do if I have a stripped bolt on my oil pan into the timing cover there isn't much space to work with its the second one from the left and its keeping me from replacing my gasket
So much work dang
@SpaceWolfPainter The Samsung TL105 is a 2010 model i do not think you will have much luck finding one.I am looking at a new camera right now it is a Panasonic Lumix SZ7, might be worth checking out.
Thanks. I'm thinking I'm probably going to take the head off to and also get it plained and maybe a valve job.
good job man, excuse me i have a question ... the fan start work when the car stared ?. i have one 95 saturn sc2 and the fan no work, i just want make sure because it is overhearing. thanks.
thank you for tihis great video.....
Novice mechanic here and I just blew the head gaskets out of my 97 sl2 dohc. Glad I work at a shop that will let me do this over the weekend.
@scaldinghotcoffee When i have to find a location the AutoZone online repair section is pretty good. The flush goes like this first remove the thermostat put housing back.Mix 2 oz of automatic dishwasher powder to 1 gal of water.Fill the cold system run the car up to normal operating temp then drain.Ever time you do the flush cycle the engine has to be cold. Before your done flush with clean water.
Way to get it done Rich!
--What resources would you recommend for component location? The Haynes books often leave me guessing as to exact locations.
--Could you explain the dish detergent process?
Thanks!
I was wondering does my 1997 Saturn sl1 1.9L have a upper and lower head gasket I just replaced the k frame my self first time doing something like that took me for ever
Thanks again for posting videos like this they really help out for the average garage mechanic. How much different procedure for a 2001 DOHC?? I wish you were my next-door neighbor!!
@RandallFlaggNY You would think so but they recommend oil.
very good rich i have a question when do you know when you need to resurface the cylinders head?? and also why did you tightten the bolts and then lossen them out thanks i watch all ur videos ?????
@farmboy30117 Yes i was thinking about the same thing but we were already in the job for $400.in parts so i just inspected it for cracking. Also i did this whole job for FREE no labor cost (sister).
Rich, what is the reason for torquing the head bolts down then taking them out and putting oil on the threads then torquing them back down?
Thanks so much, great video as always. One question @richpin06a did you say you used dishwasher detergent to clean the old oil out?? That would have been great to film, never heard of that before.
great vid! you don't need cherry picker or hold the engine on a jack for this right?
Hey rich got a quick question. I replaced my faulty thermostat and three days later my water pump started leaking in exactly the same spot as this one. My question is, I only live 5 miles from the parts store. If I top off the coolant tank do you think it'd be safe enough to make it there? I don't have access to a second vehicle at the moment and I really need to get this fixed. It's a pretty slow leak, as of now, but of course that could change in an instant.
Nice job..what kind/brand name torque wrench that you use?
Hi Richpin, Thanks for sharing your knowledge. How did you flush the engine with dishwashing detergent? Thanks in Advance.
The bolts used were torque to yield head bolts.
If i had this problem i might try to move the bolt with a chisel to a point were i could remove it with vice gripes.
Great vid Rich. New head bolts or reused? torque to yield.
working on a 93 saturn with a 1.9 dohc intake come out with head or is it better to leave it in car like you do with sohc ?
Bring extra antifreeze or water with you and watch the temp gauge like a hawk.
@Donmega884 It would have added an additional $150 to the job plus i put a zipper on the timing cover.
I wish you would've shown at least a little part of how you cleaned it out. And also shown a little of actually putting the head gasket on. Did you clean both surfaces really good or just take the old one off and put the new one on? But thanks for posting this. I didn't realize how much went into replacing it. What would this normally charge at a shop?
@SpaceWolfPainter I am kind of embarrassed to say....it is a little Samsung TL105
You can buy me a virtual beer. What what what you say.Find my videos with the google ads embedded in them (older ones)and click on them they give me a few cents for the clicks. It would much appreciated.
Totally possible to do, even with the engine in the car. I pulled the head, timing cover, oil pan, windage pan, pistons/rods, and replaced the pistons, rings, rod bearings, timing chain, head gasket, etc with the block still in the car. Complete rebuild kit was only about $400 on ebay.
what was the process of cleaning /flushing the contaminated oil out from the engine using Autodish detergent?
I have seen blocks that were welded.
Good Easter to ya Rich. I think I have a major problem here. With the chain on and off I can only turn the crankshaft over about 3/4 quarters of a revolution then it`s like hitting a brick wall. Any ideas ?
what do you mean by flushing the oil out and using a dishwasher detergent? is this the same for a ford explorer sohc 4.0? do you think the explorer can be done as well without removing the engine?
Just asking ..why would you not replace crank seal at this time...& Check out pump..?
I see so many people now days that think cars need no maintenance.
OK, I think I fixed it. I just took everything off. I then took off the exhaust cam and repositioned it to the 12 o'clock position. then put everything back together and now I get as many revolutions as I want. does this sound correct ? or was it wrong for me to take the cam shaft off ? thanks Rich.
Hey Rich. I just took the head off on my '98 Sl2 DOHC. I found two bent valves on # 3 and on #4 there are two valves very slight open with both cams at the 12:00 position.
One thing I noticed that kinda freaked me out is that there are 2 eyebrows carved out on the 12:00 positions on top of each piston. Is this correct ?
