Really have to hand it to Bob Budiansky. He put so much effort into giving these toy robots interesting personalities and backgrounds I'm convinced he's the main reason why the franchise has endured for 40 years
Transformers really is the example of how we can give purpose to static object. Small toys become symbols and themes of compassion, sacrifice, ideals, conviction, war and freedom.
its gas how the WHOLE lore bascially comes down to Jim Shooter, Denny o Neill, and Bob Budiansky. i still laugh at Jims story about how it all stated with a hasbro exex that came into his office with a toy robot and transformed it in front of him. jim goes "thats cool, why's it do that ?" and the exex goes "thats why im here" :D
The Marvel comic is a big part of why I'm still a fan of the franchise 4 decades later, and Bob's stories are some of my favorites. The whole arc with Ratchet saving the Autobots from Megatron? 10/10 stuff, that.
Technically, his first word is a rusty, bellowing *" P R I I I I I M E "* before he opens the way to his core, but it's easy to miss if you're not listening for it.
Back in the day, after the death of my grandfather and my parent's divorce, my mother and grandmother took me to the only Toys'R'Us in Germany for my eleventh birthday. Standing in the Transformers aisle, I got to choose whichever one I wanted. I went back and forth between Metroplex and Fortress Maximus for almost half an hour... I had to turn on the lights twice that night to make sure it hadn't been a dream and Metroplex was really standing there. Childhood me still gets goosebumps when grown me sees Metroplex mentioned anywhere.
I’m a huge fan of Titans, I kinda wish that they were featured on more media outside of comic books Metroplex has always been a personal favorite and watching an episode about him is a nice surprise!
Titans are an awesome concept that don't really work well with the current approach to how Transformers shows are made. Unless they're someone like Omega Supreme, their character model can't be easily repurposed for other characters, and the sheer size and power of them makes them more difficult to implement effectively in an episodic series as anything other than a reminder that you can find this toy on shelves this holiday season at retailers nationwide (as shown in the War for Cybertron trilogy).
My favourite picture ever of Metroplex is a cover for Transformers vs GI Joe #10 by Ulises Fariñas. It really makes him feel like he turns into a city, not just an abstract pile of boxes.
One of my favorite aspects of Fall of Cybertron was the contrast between Metroplex and Trypticon. Metroplex willing sacrifice himself to ensure the Cybertronian race had a future, and being honored by Optimus Prime, meanwhile Trypticon being forced into become the Decepticon's vessel, all the while being belittled by Megatron.
And on top of that, in the aligned continuity, Metroplex is truly Titan sized towering over the Ark without its launch base, while in keeping in War for Cybertron's continuity, Trypticon is smaller than Metroplex and is more in line with, but stil a few meters than Omega Supreme, who was already barely bigger than a combiner like Bruticus. Plus it really shows in terms of scale and gravitas that where we could interact with Omega Supreme and Trypticon as bosses and objectives, even part of levels, Metroplex IS a level and he's so big and powerful that you can't really play as or fight him, only watch in the background, interacting with certain objects, and calling in either his weapons against Vehicons and marauder tanks, and his fists in the case of the warp cannons and Megatron. That's just how differently they treated Metroplex and Trypticon.
I find it fascinating how in both the Transformers Cybetron series and the fall of Cybertron game, Metroplex defeated Megatron pretty bad, to the point that Megatron had to be reborn, becoming Galvatron in Transformers Cybertron and being revived and rebuilt as Megatron in the fall of Cybertron game.
Optimus Prime: "Metroplex.... Go for a walk!" Metroplex: "When hope is gone, undo this lock and send me forth for a moonlit walk! Release Restraint Level... *ZERO."*

We bonded over Transformers and are still friends to this day!
Did you know that the massive Autobot Energon transport that Starscream and the Combaticons try to capture would have been Broadside, a colossal Triple Changer? His two alt-modes would be the giant ground transport and the giant flying aircraft itself.
They made the Generations Broadside also Tidal Wave, so there is precedent for having those two be the same mold. We need to go back to the PS2 Armada game and have a Broadside boss like the Tidal Wave one in that game...
He was actually named "Metroflex" in Japan. I assume this was due to a typo, since the two names written in Japanese differ by a small circle: Metroplex would be written メトロプレックス, whereas Metroflex is written メトロフレックス.
Metroplex was a Christmas present in 1986, and man did I play with him for hours. I always loved him and the episodes he showed up in S3 were some of my favorites from that season. I always found it funny that Autobot City in the movie looks far more like Fortress Maximus' city mode, as well as being referred to AS Fortress Maximus in the Marvel comic adaptation of the movie. It's also ironic to me considering I far prefer Fort Max's Marvel and IDW versions where he's not a titan. I like having Metroplex as the only Autobot titan, it makes him feel more special.
I loved Cybertron Metroplex. Him turning into the largest land vehicle just makes so much sense and his giant bucket wheel axe “spark drinker” was so badass.
Thank you for showcasing my favorite City Bot this week. I can remember getting my G1 Metroplex for Christmas, along with the Minibot Pipes. I loved how Metroplex had three separate units that were not only a part of him, but could each function independently. That was the design that I loved, and I did have to buy the Titan Class version when it came out. I’m hoping that someday we get a more cartoon inspired version of him, in that Titan class, but I’m still happy to have him, on my shelf.

When I was in Japan visiting relatives in 1986 when I was 11, I picked up Metroplex, along with a bunch of other Transformers, Zoids, and Gundam toys. When I returned to the states, I gifted the Metroplex to my friend Matt who had watched my dog for those two months while I was away.
Metroplex was by far my favourite Transformers toy back in the 80s. There was something great about having a Transformer that big that made every imagined story into something epic!
I had the original toy as a kid, and it was a crown jewel in my collection. In my head canon storyline, Metroplex city mode was more of a mobile HQ for the Autobots. He'd fight most often in that rolling battle platform mode, and Scamper was directly linked to the titan since he could store away in the chest compartment. His opposite was the only other titan I had, Scorponok.
I remember asking for Metroplex for Christmas but it was $40 and my mother said she wasn't buying a toy for that much. Little did I know that she had already bought Trypticon which was $60. I didn't get the G1 version till decades later. Mom did eventually get me the Titan version.
In my school vr game, Metroplex was in the game as a living city where he was the Secret city. The changelings hide in during the Astro arc and did have a major role during the fight against Anerga, where he assumed robot mode in the game and was playable in the G man Apocalypse boss fight but sadly his Spark was destroyed by the Decepticon Bioweapon Powerhouse Goalius who was corrupted by the Chaos shards of the Ember stone and he passed away but not before bringing the G man Apocalypse with him
Metroplex's sacrifice in Fall of Cybertron touched me deeply. It was his choice and he didn't hesitate to do it. That alone pits Metroplex a special place in my heart
This was perfect! I JUST finally got the Generations Metroplex figure a few weeks ago, so this was some fantastic timing! I had the G1 figure, minus his legs. A relative had seen it at a garage sale and picked it up for me, but he was all top half, haha. Great video as always. He deserves much more screen time than he's gotten.
Remember the character of metroplex really well from the G1 cartoons of the third season. Always really enjoyed when metroplex was at the centre of attention. Then more recently it's been the reissues of the UK Marvel Transformers comics. In that particular story where Rodimus Prime activates Metroplex. To help win the fight against invading Sharktacons. Have never purchased any of the Metroplex Titans. But I say if they were to do one final Titan. Then it should have the look of the G1 figure. With the capability to join together with the Combiners. Like in the original Diaclone line. Would be the perfect way to give the Titan class a great farewell.
when I was a kid ,far from my home there was this big hotel with a very particular design, and every of the sparse times we would pass by the place, I would stare at it thinking "With an Autobot logo this would be Metroplex"
Hello there Chris McFeely and fellow Transformers fans. I do apologize for the tardiness of this comment, but I was a bit busy when this video dropped and just recently got the chance to watch it. Anyways, I just wanted to say that this new video was absolutely awesome. I really enjoyed the information that came out of it and learned more about this character that doesn't get used a lot and only has appeared in some types of media, like the 1980's Transformers the Movie, the Japanese episode entitled Scramble City and a few comics. Thanks again for creating and sharing this incredible video with us. Hope that you and everyone else in this community has a great day and wonderful weekend. Until All Are One. Peace Out and Maximize.
I love the storyline, lore and thought process that was put into the original transformers. It truly was ahead of its time! I especially love deep dives into characters that deserved much more screen time! 💯
Nice timing on this one, I'd just managed to track down a Japanese T30 Metroplex the other day I've seen an embarrasingly small amount of TF fiction so it's always nice to hear more about these toy robots I've been collecting

Optimus - Metroplex, my friend you don't have to do, there's no guarantee you have enough fuel to get us to the space bridge Metroplex - This is my choice The most heartbroken moment in transformers game 😢
Thank you soo much for doing this Basics video Chris. You do such a great job with your telling of the character's history. My 2 favorite versions of Metroplex are the Fall of Cybertron and Cybertron cartoon. I like the gane version nore because of how big he is, his voice, and the sacrifice he makes at the end. Anyway, keep up the amazing work and stay safe Chris.
It's interesting to note how Budiansky's profile of him seems to have at least partially informed his personality in Fall of Cybertron. ***Spoilers***: The first time in that game we see Metroplex make a decision we know specifically is his own - it's him choosing to give up his life so that the other autobots have a chance, however remote, to escape Cybtertron on the ark and maybe make it to the spacebridge/portal thing

10:51 Slammer: "Don't mind me, just starin' up at the ceiling in my tank mode."
Great video, really enjoyed seeing all the edutainment about this favourite Transformer of mine 👏👏
Cybertron Metroplex is the just the chillest dude ever despite being THAT strong
Fantastic story video 👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏great job Chris Crasher!
One of my favorite Autobots ever!! Thank you!!!!
Peace Out and Maximize.
metroplex was my 1st apartment for 6 months, thanks man
I love the storyline, lore and thought process that was put into the original transformers. It truly was ahead of its time! I especially love deep dives into characters that deserved much more screen time! 💯
One of my favorite Christmas toys. Brings back memories
Always good to see you! I love that last splash image of the figure! Great Stuff as always!
Great content as always!!! Keep up the great work!!!
been having a ridiculous amount of fun populating titans with core class figs.
:D
Always a treat to watch Chris Metroflex his knowledge of all things Cybertronian
Humorously i think Japan called metroplex metroflex back in g1
@@gabrielchee8470 Lol, that's awesome!
Nice timing on this one, I'd just managed to track down a Japanese T30 Metroplex the other day
I've seen an embarrasingly small amount of TF fiction so it's always nice to hear more about these toy robots I've been collecting
Fun ending gag, but i was a bit disappointed by your failure to HEED THE CALL OF THE LAST PRIME
Metroplex was my favorite toy as a kid, I was so proud of having him.
6:38 during my time at Daemen University I took animation courses with a professor who animated Fall of Cybertron Metroplex's transformation sequence
Not joking by the way!
i remember playing FOC as a little child and i remember how heartbroken i was watching metroplex's sacrifice
Such a great and informative video. Would love to see you do a video on the Maximal High Council from Beast Wars.
I gotta be honest, Cybertron Metroplex might just be my favorite, mostly because of how different he is from all the other iterations.
I draw transformers in my spare time and this video has inspired me to sketch Metroplex next.
His back of the box art image is seared in my memory!
Ever since I played FOC as a kid Metroplex has been one of if not my favorite character from Transformers.
Also you see Scamper during transformation 2:35 was really neat as a kid for me.
High Moon quite literally made one of the greatest pieces of transformers media ever of all time
The game made me love metroplex so that any time he’s mentioned I cheer
I love walkable cities.
Thank you for finally doing metroplex
"Metroplex is my kind of Town!"
Titans return did a great job showing how bigger metroplex is compared to the combiners
HOLY MCFEELY YOU HAVE FINALLY BLESSED US MY THANKS IS YOURS
@thatone452 have you watched Journey through the Mists?
@@AndrewDavis-sj6mb I believe so. Why do you inquire
"till all are one" powers down. Fuck me that was a tear jerker of a scene.
Oh I didn’t know that!🤯🤯using combination transformers to Metroplex👍👍👍
Good Video. Still have my original G1 Metroplex on display from when I was a kid. :)
Metroplex - Optimus, take whatever spark left within me, use to light your way across the star.
Optimus - Metroplex, my friend you don't have to do, there's no guarantee you have enough fuel to get us to the space bridge
Metroplex - This is my choice
The most heartbroken moment in transformers game 😢
Awesome video Chris!👏🏻😁
This big guy was my dads fave.
I owned a toy of him given to me by my cuz. But it was only half of his body so for a long time idk who it was.
When I first saw Metroplex appear in Fall of Cybertron, I was so excited!
