Bonhams drum track is more visceral, interesting, nuanced and passionately musical than a lot of full bands have to offer 💥😳💥

The Purdie shuffle ! Bonzo was much inspired by him ( Bernard Purdie ), as Plant once said. Beautiful Bonzo's playing !!

John Bonham was a human drum machine with a soul. Precision mixed with groove. Power mixed with softness. There have been, and there still are many great rock drummers. John Bonham was one of a kind.

His hands and feet were in perfect sync with each other and both in perfect sync with his brain.
As if all 3 were a single entity..
His phrasing on his snare in the middle section at 3:12 is impeccable.
    Crazy how good he was..
    He was a perfect drummer..

EXACTLY! If you are a casual listener, that middle might sound thoroughly improvised and varied. But, to your point, Bonham played that middle with the same strokes and accents throughout its duration. I don't think I could do that if I practiced for 100 years, there would always be something at least slightly different each time.

In the beginning of the section you can tell he was searching but when he found it, it was lights out..
He adds some color at 3:25 for 2 bars.
I'm reminded of Gallows Pole, he plays the same way.
I see a Midnight Express Freight Train off in the distance plowing through a snow covered mountain forest..all torque.
Rumor has it he was an earlier version of a Cyberdyne Systems T-900 Terminator.
Somehow he came off the assembly line with drumsticks in hand.
      The rest was history.

I believe only 1/2 of this truly isolated drum track has been up here on You Tube for much over 10 years. This track was TRULY obtained from the 2" session tape master, however ALL versions of this on You Tube were truncated after the "shuffle/rumba" mid-section. What was done HERE to this file, is that "loops" were created from earlier parts of the piece (before the mid-section) in order to create the "missing" last 1/2 of the isolated drum track. If one COMPARES VERY, VERY CLOSE, the album version to this version, one will fully discover that Bonham's drum fills, rudiments, double snare hits & roll downs, that are on the 2nd half of the album version mix, are clearly not presented here. This was a fairly good "patchwork" job presented here, however, the 2nd half of this track was created by multiple loops, edits & repeats from the 1st half.
That is my takeaway & analysis from this, after hearing & studying the original isolated audio file that has been a You Tube mainstay, for years & years.

Machine like precision on this iconic groove from Bonham. And yes he must have overdubbed that timpani fill after the solo. Such power combined with finesse and musicality. I heard it playing in a grocery store the other day and I stopped everything. Had to listen!!

I've actually heard some people say that they thought Bonham was great, but sloppy at times, similar to Keith Moon. I think that they are conflating "sloppy" with his natural (visceral) feel. When you listen to this isolated track, who can deny his precision? The guy had the best of both worlds, a unique ability to fuse his instinct with the technical aspect of playing the drums. When people ask me who I think the greatest drummer that ever lived was, my kneejerk reaction is always Buddy Rich. The man was not human, he simply did things that are hard to comprehend. But the other side of that is that he also came off as a bit dispassionate as well, at least to me. Put another way, I think Bonham had an even 50/50 split between heart and mind when he played, whereas Rich was always more concerned about the technical aspect to drumming.
It's apples and oranges to a large extent as well. Of course, I realize that we are talking about 2 different genres of drumming here. Rich, in his arrogance, always made it a point to kick rock and roll drumming to the curb, and not even recognize the standout talent that existed within it. But the bottom line for me is that while I thoroughly appreciate and acknowledge the massive talents of jazz drummers, I'm a rock and roller. So, even though I recognize that jazz drumming is on a different level, it's NOT what floats my boat. Rock moves and inspires me much more than jazz ever will. To each his own.
