Just imagine it. A Man, who is quiet... a feat no man has ever achieved, being reminded of his humanity when he must learn to speak up for his shy, and recently orphaned, estranged half-sister. I love that story.

Before Quiet Man, Yujinaga's "feelings without words" had already been made: Journey.

and even before that, same company made flow and flower, both of which are amazing and emotional games, imo

i remember watching a full playthrough of the quiet man about a year or so ago and it sticks out as one of the most mind numbing viewing experiences ive ever had. i never looked up any reviews or even footage of the version with audio, but now im glad i did because it confirms that other people saw this game too and i didnt just have a really vivid nightmare about it after taking nyquil

It's pretty incredible how wasted the gimmick of this game is. You'd think having a deaf protagonist would facilitate some interesting visual storytelling, but instead almost all of it is delivered through the driest exposition dialogue possible.

    • @youtube-kit9450

Absolute waste. Not only do you not actually play as a deaf character (since we don't know what he's saying, what anyone is saying whose lips he's reading)... it's literally like playing a game with broken audio.
But as you said, they don't have any new storytelling, it's literally just exposition upon exposition using the idiotic "deafness" mechanic to keep that story from us.
Then we make up a marginally sensible story with characters acting somewhat normally, get the "answered" cut... and it turns out the story is some complete inane nonsense.
It delivers twists not in some clever way that uses the deafness, it literally just uses the deafness for a cheap gotcha.
Like with the dad - dude sits down with a smile, and in the calmest, normal voice ever just absolutely buttblasts Dane at any age, which only makes sense in the context of exactly screwing over a person whose audio is off. He is so dedicated to smiling while telling his son how much of a waste of life and stuff he is that he even does it while in the car and Dane's head is turned, meaning it basically became some kind of sick turn-on for him or a compulsion.

and here I am, still not understanding why a deaf man's world would sound like a kids' piano being played six feet under.

i honestly would have had his close friends talking to him in sign, with subtitles, and broken subtitles when he is reading lips to attempt to represent how much harder it is to understand, then send it to as many hearing imparted people as possible to make sure its not offensive

The director has the same god awful haircut as this character. Maybe this is one of his fantasies. Being a silent stoic hero who kicks everyones ass and gets the girls

Wait? Imogen Heap has more than one song? Definitely see where their heads were at with the audio, but definitely didn't execute it the right way. Great video!

God I wanted to like this game. Still do, really. But after that first cutscene where you just had to sit while someone speaks silently to camera for five minutes, I just couldn't do it. It's incredible that a whole team managed to put this together without someone saying "wait this is terrible"

Oh my god in heaven....it was worse than I ever could've imagined. And you actually played this shit 12 goddamn times, whew holy literal hell man! Even if you spread those 12 playthroughs out over the course of a lifetime it's still far too dangerous. Exposing your psyche to this is like exposing yourself to radiation, which is to say there are quicker and far less painful ways to usher yourself off of this mortal coil.
It's seriously wild how this turned game turned out, and I do feel for the guys who made it because you could tell they were actually on to something that seemed to get lost along the way. The artistic vision, much as you said, just didn't seem to fit the medium. Great fucking vid, appreciate the extensive effort it must have taken to make!

Mostly when i play games this many times it mostly to grab little bits and pieces of footage. and i have a high tolerance for this type of stuff. Sure, the back half of the David Cage reviews did affect me as they are so depressing, but thats the exception.

@@ScottsGameAsylum Hell, these sort of games really are interesting as hell to take a closer look at and see what exactly went wrong/if anything is salvageable. Those David Cage/Quantem Dream games really do baffle me, because they usually have pretty fantastic visuals and seem compelling at a glance. It's when you go deep that you uncover the cynical, pandering BS and one man's desperation to be considering a Hollywood elite artist or some shit. Really bizarre and a total, utter waste of talent over there it would seem.

There's a 'game' in this? Wow. Now I'll admit I was watching this whilst doing some work, but I'm just confused as all hell by this 'story'. How in holy fuck did this pass through through so many hands, managers, teams, etc etc and it still got the green light of 'yup! this is ok!'. WOW. So glad this one just passed me by. Great video btw Scott!

  • @childofcascadia

I mean, this game had an interesting base concept- a deaf man as a protagonist.
Theres a lot of interesting things you could do with that related to how the character perceives the world while still keeping it accessible for your hearing audience.
Unfortunately, this game fails to do anything remotely interesting with the concept and pretty much stops at GUY IS DEAF THAT MEANS HE CANT HEAR PEOPLE SPEAK IN A DIALOGUE HEAVY GAME.
And then its got some *terrible* script on top of that. Like Quantic is having Wet Dreams bad.

As someone who plays a lot of free indies, Kevin Macleod is omnipresent. So I guess I got the joke? Royalty free sound effects played over and over again that you've already heard a thousand times in other media.

If he wanted to create a game where being a mute or deaf is a central thing. Why did the story have to be about mommy issues and violence and basically be a crime thriller with a supernatural twist? The deaf thing detracts from the game rather than adds to it. You can even imagine a smarter game where we have a deaf protagonist and Lala would be your ears to help you along. Imagine a game where it's about a couple that is able to communicate through sign language and for whatever difficulty the deaf person might have is compensated by the other. Fargo the TV series already did this, and it worked well. In fact...Fuck it, just watch Fargo.

The only time I can think of where someone at Man of Action was into this whole “my mom” thing is super loose but still, in one of they’re shows, Generator Rex, the main character, 15 or 16 I think, had a crush on an older woman named Dr. Holiday. Now this didn’t really go anywhere and iirc he got a love interest his age and let that crush go, but it’s the only time I can think of where this even close happened. It’s funny too, I felt like I knew so much about this game but this is the first time I’ve heard Man of Action was apart of this, lol.

Wait, Joe Kelly wrote this? The guy who wrote one of the best Superman stories ever with "What's so Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?" The Joe Kelly that wrote the excellent graphic novel, "I Kill Giants?" The man who basically created the modern conception of Deadpool? I know everybody will occasionally have a dud, but how did a writer as talented, capable, experienced and accomplished as he is produce something this incompetently awful? What the hell happened here?
And "I Kill Giants" is especially baffling compared to this, as that beautifully pulled off the sort of magical realism as an allegory for grief that this was trying for. Again, what happened here?

Does this type of shitey David Cage interactive styled Cage-like game have a genre? Because they all seem to feature the same themes despite seemingly having none of the same people involved that Quantic Dream has 😂. It still looks more enjoyable than Beyond as at least you can laugh at the fat old dad bloke with a halloween mask.
