  • We are one step closer to finding out what exactly caused the Surfside Condos in Florida to collapse in 2021 -- leaving 98 people dead. Federal investigators with the National Institute of Standards and Technology released some of their initial findings Thursday. CBS News national correspondent Manuel Bojorquez reports from Miami.

Poorly constructed building, poorly maintained building and poorly investigated accident. Shouldn't someone be going to prison over 98 deaths? What exactly did the inspector look at every year?

Owners don't want to be told they have to evacuate and pay expensive repairs. The building could have been condemned based on the report in 2018.

98 souls lost, because of poor engineering. Entirely preventable.

underengineered, but also built below spec, and grossly overloaded. Its more surprising it stood up as long as it did.

“Codes & things not done properly” = I have no idea of what the report said. The big problem is that real estate in Florida may be uninsurable as a result of widespread corruption within the construction & inspection industry throughout the state.

It's that way EVERYWHERE! When the inevitable disasters and collapses happen, then suddenly people see the criminal and corrupt practices in outliers somewhere else, because that's a more comforting story than the reality that it happens EVERYWHERE--which it does!

wait... is this a joke? they are "years away" from figuring out how this building collapsed? erm.... hire a civil engineer? like a good one though not one of the ones you've been talking to up until now. You'll have your answer within a week.... Alternatively you can live in a world where buildings are built and nobody knows how so they fall down after a day and it takes years to figure out why they don't work.

Similarities to the Murrah Federal Building collapse. A large transversal beam that was not laterally supported got dislodged and a large part of the building lost all support.

IT'S A BIG WAIST OF MONEY, ALL THEY NEED IS A SET OF PLANS FOR THE BUILDING, THEN
THE RATIO OF THE ARCHITECTS WORK THAT SIGNED OFF ON THE STEEL USED IN THE
CONSTRUCTION. THEN DID THE BUILDER USE THE CORRECT GAUGE OF I-BEAM (STEEL)OR
DID HE SUBSTITUTE FOR A LESS EXPENSIVE I-BEAM ?

  • @bweaver760

The original plans did not consider the salt water corrosion that occurred along the ocean front properties! The engineering firm was not considering salt water corrosion!!! Probably a firm that had never built along the ocean front!!!!
