I live in LA and have had a few random encounters with gang members, surprisingly every one of them positive. One time two of them helped me change my flat tire at night in a dark parking lot. They could've easily mugged me with little effort, but instead helped me, shook my hand, and went on their way 👍

Spoken, exhaled human verbalisation (words) are just labels that we use to associate external experiences, to then internalise in our brains.
Humanity has no label, morals are innate to each individual.
Someone who leads with humble innate morals/beliefs, will create a ‘hive mind’ conscious. The hive mind mentality is then shared amongst other members, in or out groups - psychologically.
You can be labelled a gang member but maintain certain morals/beliefs/codes that match of someone of another social class.

As a journalist for 20 years, you are doing naturally what we try to teach newcomers - with little success a lot of times - to tell the story, do not be the story. When you did not dance and did not participate in the game, you kept us focusing on the story instead of focusing on you while you were telling it with your brilliant questions. This is genius on so many levels. Great job, Peter.

After making a little bit I only got 2 messages from people congratulating me. 50 others (some that are close and not so close) acted like nothing happened and always looked at me funny. Then some had the nerve to say I changed or saying things like “oh he thinks he’s this or that cuz he has money now” when really they were just jealous and saw my unchanged personality and every little thing that I did as suddenly being because of me wanting to show off (eating at a nice restaurant more often than before, getting a nice car) etc etc. the GOOD thing about success is it filters out the fakes. Respect each other, Live life the way that makes you happy (bc life is too short/precious) and build community/ family bonds. I was born in December 1982 in Long Beach,CA. My Father's family moved to L.A. from New Orleans in 1971, and my Mom's Family moved from San Antonio to L.A. in 1976. I've been to South Central Twice, first in 1988 and '89 then again in 2007.
In 1988, my late Aunt stayed off of 56th and Normandy, I saw it as its lowest point during that time. The Boys and Girls Club Centers were WORSE. I saw a nigga get jacked over $80 by like 12 Crips, and saw Mexican Gangs slinging Kilos.
But in 2007 when I went to meet my Father in person, it was a different story. My Uncle took me to a Bus Stop area in South Central/West Los Angeles close to the mansion where MJ died in 2009 to wait for my Father to show up, and I was told "Crips and Pirus won't mess with you if you just look normal and casual". I saw Dozens drive by heckling each other with signs thinking I was going see a throwdown, it never happened. It was more of a "Representing" Battle with each other.
I don't feel any hostility towards Crips and Bloods anymore. These NEWER Generations seem to be more levelminded and understanding to each other. Hell, in 1994, the Set that got into a fight with Dooky from Boyz In The Hood, the ABC Bloodz RESENTED Bloodshed and TURNED in and snitched on one of their own after he killed Dooky, Dooky's friend and Paralyzed his GF. We all are sinners and we must get punished for all of our sins by spending eternity in hell, but God sent Christ, his only Son to take the penalty for all of our sins instead by dying on the cross to save us from going to hell and so we can have eternal life with Christ and God in his kingdom. I had a job that took me into these areas a few years ago and it was very interesting and I met some great people. I had the chance to go into a lot of homes and see how people really live and I see that there's so many different perspectives that we live our lives through and there is no one answer to everything or everyone. I do feel sorry for folks that don't know what's outside of these neighborhoods, because the world is full of experiences and the more you get outside your own comfort zone, the more it opens up. Going into these neighborhoods gave me experience in life that I treasure to this day.

I live in an estate in Northern Ireland, and i'm always so offended that people judge it straight off the bat via what they've heard or seen in media, without actually knowing anything about it or the people who live in it. It shocks me how much people feel they can judge without knowing. So I love watching someone enter an area perceived as 'all bad' and take a genuine interest in the people who actually live there and the positives as well as negatives. It's important to hear from the people who live it rather than seeing it filtered through multiple media sources.
One thing I will always say about low income areas is that the sense of community here (and in any other low income area i've been in) is unmatched. I always want to leave my home place but living here I feel safer than I would anywhere else. Weird as that might sound. Here I know I have 100 Grannys, Mums, Aunts, Dads, Neighbours and friends who would drop everything to help me or anyone else in need. Our kids are so protected and our elderly are respected. I don't think anyone gives enough credit to that side of things when they talk about us low income folk. All people want to do is draw attention to gangs, drugs, single mums, whatever else frightens people these days lol.

It's pretty interesting how different these guys are when compared to the Bronx series Peter did. I left Cali about two years ago and can tell you that it's insane out there because these crazy little kids running the streets with no respect for anybody. Seems like in NY they have a lot more elders out there trying to hold them down and steer them a different direction, but there's a few things that are consistent: no fathers in the homes, single mothers raising sons to react on nothing but emotion, and the first inclination is to shoot someone instead of talking it out or fighting with your fists.

Haven't watched the Bronx episode, but have gone through half of the Brooklyn one. I got the feeling that the elders performing parental/guiding duties were largely missing in Brooklyn (evidently not in the Bronx).
The most striking difference to me was the story-telling by the hood folks. Beezy in particular conveyed his story and thoughts rather clearly (slang aside) and the inter-personal complexities he described (money, entitlement) were eye-opening. The folks from the Brooklyn episode ... well, it was plain verbal diarrhea; I had to stop half-way through and got no meaningful information.
