People I met who disliked these mechanics just weren't good at the game or were doing it wrong, causing their pain. MkDS is still the most fun and rewarding MK game I played.
I remember being the best MKDS player in middle school because I would spam the hell out of the drift and no one else thought of doing that. You can even dodge blue shells by timing the jump after the drift. Everyone thought I had a hacked version of MKDS lol
When I was 7 years old playing this game, I knew about the rubber-banding ai, so something really fun that I did was constantly set a 150 CPU race on this map until the AIs combination was a rubber banding bowser with the airplane vehicle (since that is one of the fastest, if not the fastest, vehicles in the game), push him to the left side of the map shown at 0:19, and keep him stuck for 1 lap, then I would push him into the water and watch how fast he would catch up with the other AIs
My favorite part is where he drifts. No, I actually like the fact that every lap is different and the wall clip that he does at the end of the small stone bridge.
Drifting while a boost is present prolongs that boost to the end of the miniturbo and you can boost another miniturbo off the last, causing a chain reaction. In short, boosting quickly preserves speed.

Character weight affects the speed of a kart when offroad, except during shroom or PRB. Dry bones is the lightest, therefore normally the best.
