She was one of the most underrated singers of her era with brilliant musical intuition, Truly great in everyting she sang. She puts all the modern day wobbly singers to shame. This is an exquisite version of a great aria. Brava!

I played for her lessons at Indiana University for 6 years. She was able to demonstrate this astonishing pianissimo singing at any time of the day. For her, it was about making “colors.” And a steely determination to sing with clarity and precision. I’m so,glad to see so many of her recordings appearing now. At the time she came to IU, there was so little available of her voice for us to hear. We could only imagine, based on her demonstrations in lessons.

I saw her in a revival of Verdi's Alzira at the Rome Opera in the late 60's. Not only did her magnificent voice fill the house with perfect early Verdi but her stage presence and acting was superb. One of the truly great sopranos of the last Century.

So glorious to hear Handel sung with perfect taste by a really full and beautiful soprano voice. What a shame there is no complete recording of the performance, only this precious fragment.

THIS IS HOW THE BAROQUE OPERA IS SINGED. That thought that to sing baroque you have to sing with a white voice is a contemporary fallacy. Vocal technique there is only one. Doesn't have that "baroque voice". Imagine singing with a white voice at a time when the opera was attended by an audience that was not silent at all! Hahahaha No way...

@@FelipeViannaNutriUFRJ It seems to me that great artists require a certain degree of, for want of a better term, arrogance. Your quote reminds me of a similar one of Wanda Landowska: "you play Bach your way, and I'll play it his way."

@@danawinsor1380 Opera is not about singing style per period of music history. Opera is about tradition. A LOT! Great masters of the past such as Caccini, Mancini, Porpora etc (all Baroque), exalted the voice that we find today in Flagstad, Nilsson, Coreli, Dmitrova, Siepi, Ruffa etc, that is, the great Belcantist singers of the past. Opera has to do with declamation of the Greek theater, and not with a white voice of little value (which is what these masters I mentioned didn't like at all). Montiverdi was sang, in his time, just as Nilsson sang Wagner in her day. With fireworks, not lighter flames... OPERA IS TRADITION!!! As Callas herself said: "there is only one way to sing, the right way!" And she was very correct. The great composers of the past would never accept singers, like our modern ones, who I don't know where they got it from, sing baroque music without a chest voice, without a squillo, without a girare, without a chiaroscuro, without a body, without ANYTHING! It's sad... Although it's not just the current baroque singers, but the majority of lyrical singers. Let us suffer!

@@danawinsor1380 "Fermin Salaberri refers to so called "Historically informed performances" which currently favour using weak, underdeveloped voices. It is a huge mistake, as that sort of thin singing could never excite audiences to the sort of frenzy we read happened in the time of Farinelli. Mme Zeani, who was trained in the technique of the castrati, (see her website) was always rousing audiences to a state of ecstasy with her rich, inspirational singing. R I P L'Assoluta

    This is amazing.
The idiotic trend that the baroque must be sung without a voice, or for voiceless singers the way to the baroque, has gone recently. Look at the archives of opera houses, this was not the case. Back in the beginning of 2000 Ewa Podles sang Händel’s Julius Caesare and three days later Erda in Wagner’ Siegfried both parts with great success.

    • @opera_lovers_paradise9755

That’s right! You can't sing opera without proper technique. There is only one way to sing. The right way! Let me quote a famous castrato who was also a renowned voice teacher in his time:
“It remains for me now to speak of those voices, THIN and WEAK in the entire register, which in my opinion are of almost no value because any voice must have a good VOLUME, as much as possible. - Giovanni Battista Mancini

@@opera_lovers_paradise9755.....I see what you're saying in this quote , but he could be referring to even small voice types to support and make a good sound with focus, and not a breathy soft weak voice with no proper tone. Lily pons had a small voice but she had a beautiful tone and a golden sheen to her sound with amazing carrying power....

Not one complete studio recorded opera! Same for Gencer. And Farrell, the greatest soprano voice of the last half of the 20th century, 2 recordings- Wozzeck and Maria Stuarda! Columbia wasted her and Tucker. Surely they could have recorded an Andrea Chenier, Trovatore, Forza with them.
